Sex and chocolate are the two pleasures Michał enjoys most in life.
His sex life has been nonexistent for some time, though. After a particularly bad hookup, he keeps mostly to himself. That leaves chocolate. Luckily, he works surrounded by the most delicious, extravagant produce in Gothenburg. Beside his job at the chocolaterie, his main source of excitement is his online friend, Magnus, whom he stubbornly refuses to meet in person.
A customer turns up at the chocolaterie one day—tall, shy, and charming. He could be just the right man. If Michał can step out of his overly safe shell, there might be not only chocolate, but sex, too. Maybe chocolate-flavored sex. And if he’s lucky, maybe even love.

Vanilla Clouds is a sweet book – as sweet and as rich as milk chocolate, even. We follow Michał as he finally finds the perfect guy for him, complete with long conversations both online and over dinner, holding hands while on a ferry ride, and the most forgivable deception in the history of deceptions. At times the romance unfolds a little bit predictably, but that never takes anything away from the relationship that Magnus and Michał have. Theirs is a quiet romance, the kind that indie romance films strive to capture through camera lenses. (But Lena, Michał’s roommate, says their romance is a rom-com!)
The book is also set in Gothenburg, Sweden, and there’s a certain atmosphere to the writing and the narration that really takes you to that seemingly magical place. You can tell that Roe Horvat has a lot of love for the city they live in, and it shows through the eyes and words of Michał. It makes the book even more romantic, if that’s possible! Another thing that lends to the authenticity of the book is Michał’s Polish roots. I have a Polish friend, and I badgered him with questions about names and cultural things while I was reading this. And I’m happy to report that the author does know their stuff, even traditional Polish nicknames and terms of endearment!
Finally, it’s not all sweet and romantic. I don’t mean that there’s angst in this book, because there’s none. But rather, I meant that there’s a good amount of steam in this book for fans of sex scenes. There’s a lot of longing and pining and waiting for the right moment, but when the sex happens… Well. Let’s just say that chocolate can be used for a lot of things!
Overall, Vanilla Clouds is an easy read that you can come back to frequently if you want a comfort read. Like all kinds of chocolate, the book is a soothing balm for the soul. Perfect for hopeless romantics.
