It was another beautiful day to be at sea. Pirate Sosuke Hatake, captain to the Beast King Pirates a ragged crew of men he sail the seas on the infamous Jade Dragon, was sitting on the aft deck of his ship watching over the crew and the open water. Three days ago they had just left Tornto Harbor, having had to dock due to a nasty storm that found its way along his path. But now, for the last three days there had been nothing but blue sky and sun. Luckily for them the harbor was more then willing to sell the necessities to them, such as fresh water and food. Sosuke was glued to his map, trying to set course for their new adventure. He grunted to himself when he couldn't get the wrinkles out of the map. Having been stuffed in his coat so suddenly during the storm had caused it to crumple and ruin.

He always dreamed of going on the sea, but never got the chance until the Beast King Pirates, the band of pirates he loves the most. He's deathly afraid of dogs, having a hard time dealing with their barking after he got bit pretty bad by an aggressive one.

Sidney rushed over to Sosuke, in his usually skipping, step manner. "Captain!" He called out as he stood by the other smiling widely. Many of the crew found it odd for him, the navigator, to get so friendly with the captain of the ship. They deemed if to be slightly inappropriate though he didn't care much. They interacted on a day to day basis without him start the conversations. He had to let the other know where to dock for gathering supplies, or if they needed an emergency dock. He was useful when it came to reading the confusing maps with ease, always ready for a given challenge. That's right, Sidney Tobei was the navigator of the ship, the best one there was, if he didn't say so himself. "The food is ready if you're hungry now." His eyes dropped to the map the other was holding, looking over it a bit, reading it upside down. "Is that our next destination? The wrinkles have worn down the previous drawing, you might have to retrace with ink for proper lines. You can't get anywhere without every needed key piece." He looked up, smiling at the other, hoping he could get a look at the map himself.

Sosuke was ready to toss the map away, quick to anger he was. But he knew the map was needed, what would his crew think of a captain who threw out their only map. Suddenly he heard a bubbly call of "Captain!!" And he looked up. Sid, bouncing right towards him always managed to make his anger quell. Beside Sosuke himself, Sid was the youngest of the crew, despite the few orphaned children they picked up from sellers. He stood up just as Sid came to stand next to him. "Well, its supposed to be our next destination." He tried looking down at the map again, he could feel the excitement of looking at the map coming from Sid. He slight chuckle to himself and he was handing the map over. "Knock yourself out, kid" At nature Sosuke was a very cold person. To most of his crew he would yell easily if they screwed something up. But to Sid, he acted differently. Perhaps it was because he reminded Sosuke of his younger brother. He pat Sid on the head just after handing him the map. "You should eat something as well."

Sidney locked his eyes on the map once it was given to him. "Ah, I think I can fix it. It's not completely ruined," he chirped. He could easily read the map without fixing the almost invisible lines that were worn down. The ink seemed to smear as well, but he was sure he should fix it so Sosuke understood where they were going as well. "How did it get like this?" He was confused, usually their captain took such good care of the maps he received, never letting them get even one little tear of ruin. Not that Sid minded, he was just surprised. He neatly folded the map into a square, lightly putting it in his bag for safe keeping. He would fix it later, after he ate. He skipped breakfast, waking up two minutes too late. He was hungry, he wouldn't be able to focus on an empty stomach. He smiled even wider when Sosuke patted his head, loving the touch. "Already planning on it!" He laughed, looking out into the endless sea. "There's a small village we should dock at, we are getting low on medical supplies. It can wait if it needs to, just a suggestion. The map would be fixed by the time we got there." He looked back at Sosuke, never afraid of putting in his input on where they should go. It was the job of the navigator. He took his job seriously, it was his pride and joy.

"Aaaah, I sort of, maybe, stuffed it into my coat suddenly when the storm hit." He knew very well how much his navigator liked to keep the maps. He watched as Sid folded the map gently and slid it into his bag. Unlike the force he used on it days before. He was already walking down towards where the men ate their food before Sid caught up to him, suggesting another docking. "Are there certain supplies that we should very well take into consideration? I agree with you. A docking should be considered. We can never be too careful with the sea." He patted Sid once more on the head, a gesture he used only on Sid and no one else. "Good job. I'll let the boys know."

The maps were precious, they needed to be treated with care and they'd last you a lifetime. They held secrets to new journeys and paths, though he wouldn't blame Sosuke for doing a drastic action such as shoving it in his coat. The storm was horrible, he wouldn't leave the crew's quarters for anything until they docked. Walking by Sosuke, he gave a small 'hm' to the needed supplies. "I know we are low on bandages, but I'm not sure on the rest. But it's always better to have more for later then less that can be used," he mumbled. His smile got a bit wider when he was patted once more. This was special, he never saw any of the other crew having this much affection from the captain. He treasured this gesture every time it was used. Treasured it more than his beloved maps. "Understood." He walked over to a table with the other of his crew, reaching into the fruit bowl for an apple. He didn't usually eat an entire meal until everyone got some, including Sosuke. This was a debate that went between them for awhile until the captain gave in. He looked over at Sosuke, biting into the apple, patting the free spot next to him.

Sosuke had stepped into the eating are and watched as his crew sat and ate energetically. He made sure to make the rounds from table to table. Yeah, he was cold at heart. But his crew was his family. No more then ever. He would give anything to keep them safe. He had reached over a member, completely leaning on top of him to reach for a pear in one of the baskets on the table. When he happened to look over at the last table he needed to visit, he noticed Sid patting the only empty spot for him available. He took a bite of his fruit and strode over to the table, sitting at the empty upside down barrel used for a chair. He greeted each of the men at the table, including Sid, even though he had just been talking to him upstairs. Just as he finished his pear he raised his voice, calling out to his crew. "Alright mates! New course! Heading for a harbor to stock up on medical supplies! Once we're finished its back out to sea!" As soon as his call had ended the entire crew shout in unison, "Aye~!"

Sidney was happy the captain took his words into consideration, he truly was a kind man. He seemed so mean, but everyone knew deep down he cared. In unison with the other, he shouted an "Aye!" with glee. He set down the half eaten apple, pulling out the map. He unfolded it, running his hand on top of it to smooth out the creases. The navigator ran his fingers where the lines should be, marking them down in his head. Most of the lines were there, but the rest were either smeared or faded. It'd be almost impossible to completely fix the map, making it look new. But he could retrace the coordinates, that's the best he could do. He was happy if he foul read them, small smear lines wouldn't bother him much when he kept it for safe keeping. He always kept the same maps in case they ever needed them, which he doubted they did. Sidney knew almost all of the coordinates on the maps by heart. He studied them day and night to teach himself the navigation. "Do you think they're pirate friendly?" he questioned, looking over at Sosuke. They ran into a couple of places that didn't enjoy their company and drove them out, others were very friendly, whether it was genuine or out of fear he did not know.

Sosuke hadn't been paying attention as Sid unfolded the map and attempted to "fix it". He knew there would be no problem whether or not the map had been completely ruined. Sid's ability to understand and memorize maps was the prime reason why the previous navigator stepped down and let him command it as deserved. Although Sosuke was saddened by the fact that his closest navigator stepped down, he was glad he was replaced by someone of greater need. Luckily enough the previous navigator stayed aboard the ship and watched from the background. Offering advice when needed. Sosuke turned his attention to Sid when he heard his voice call out to him. "I've never been there personally, but I have heard that it's neutral territory." He scowled at the thought. Sure that meant pirates were welcome, with some regard. But that didn't mean they were safe from the government or other enemy ships. "Keep your guard up Sid. This docking can be trouble."

Sidney folded it back up, pursing his lips. "Aye," he mumbled, wondering how dangerous it would be. The navigator wasn't as useful when it came to fighting, though he could stand his ground well. He didn't have the agility to match up to other fighters on the boat. He was best used in the knowledge department, he knew about navigation and medicinal works. Other than that, he didn't shine much. He had basic fighting skills that at least kept himself alive when fighting, but he always was the one with the most injuries when the job was done. Sidney couldn't say he was excited if they had to deal with government or enemy ships, but he'd do his best. He always wanted to be some kind of use to the crew, not falling behind, or getting in the way. He made sure he was constantly doing something, whether it was cleaning, drawing maps, or helping the doctor on board. As long as he was keeping up nothing mattered to him, he didn't want to disappoint anyone on the ship if he failed to do such an easy job. He grabbed the red apple, biting into it once more, becoming lost in thought.

Sosuke took noticed of how quiet Sid fell. Most likely having another one of his thought meetings, as the captain liked to put it. When he looked at the map he had also taken notice of the distance from the last island to the new island. By how well they were sailing now, he figured another two days at sea and then they would reach the next harbor. Hopefully no more storms brewed overhead until then. By this time the crew was starting to finish the breakfast and after taking one last peach from the basket at the table, Sosuke too left the area and went back out site to look over everything. Today the ship needed a good cleaning from the rough sea salt that was starting to coat over the deck. So today would make a good day for that at least.

Sidney quickly finished the apple, springing up from his seat. He threw the apple core in the bin that needed to be thrown out the next time they docked. He hurried out of the eating quarters, heading to the crew's quarters to work. He didn't think to excuse himself as he just headed out. He sat at the desk, today was a great day to do the map. The sea wasn't rocking the ship too hard, he had to take advantage of how smooth the sailing was. Pulling the map back out, and setting it down on the desk unfolded, he grabbed a new piece of paper to redraw the entire map with. It would be easier to redo all of it than just try to fix the one that was ruined. He grabbed the feather, dipping it into the ink, drawing his lines slow and steady, not letting himself make one mistake. He could most likely finish within the day if he were to be left alone in silence. That was the best time for him to focus. Since everyone was still in the eating quarters, he decided to get a head start on the map. This one the captain could keep, Sidney would just keep the one that was in poor condition. The sea was his home, one he would study for hours if given the chance to. He wanted to know all the secrets it held within.

Sosuke stood at the wheel on the quarterdeck. He had given his orders to the rest of the men and now everyone was busy. The cook was finishing up his cleaning from breakfast and would eventually start on lunch. The crew were cleaning the decks and quarters, inventorying the supplies, some doing laundry. With the rain from the storm they managed to collect enough water for laundry. Sosuke notice how Sid's bubbly self wasn't among the crew members and figured he had just gone down to his room to fix the map. Any ship on the seas knew that a navigator was necessary, he was just lucky enough to be given the most dedicated one there was out there. With Sid downstairs, the captain made sure to stay and watch the course. Although the waves were steady and the sky was quiet, a ship could easily end up off course if one wasn't paying attention.

Sidney was working quickly yet steadily, making sure not to ruin any of the lines he had done so far. Time felt like it was flying as he worked so diligently on the map. It looked like an exact replica of the original, making him puff his chest with pride. It wasn't common for many to have a map that looked just as good as the original when making their own. Any navigator would let themselves get cocky for a minute, reveling in their beautiful work, he was no different int that sense. He liked to admire his accomplishments such as the maps he drew, many other would praise him for it as well. Though he never let it get to his head, he kept that steady. He accepted them, enjoyed them, but he remembered there is always room for improvement. By the time he had finished, he sat there patiently waiting for it to dry. He never left anything wet with ink alone, learning his lesson the first time when one of the crew had accidentally dropped it on the floor, smearing everything on the ground. There were still some small visible lines from that memory, not everything getting washed from the deep cleaning they had to do.

Once the ink had dried, he grabbed the map, running up to the main deck. Seeing the sun was overhead suggested it was midday by the time he finished. Close to the lunch meal time for sure. He saw everyone was cleaning, feeling guilty for getting out of it, but he was sure they'd understand. "Captain!" he called out in a cheery tone. He skipped over to the over, handing him the map. "I made a new map entirely, I hope this one is easier to read," he hummed. He was glad he got this done so soon, not having to be holed up in the room for long periods of time like he had done before. He wanted to be able to help the other's out with the chores, trying to be helpful. He was liked by the entire crew, being so friendly and cheerful. Many were concerned he would panic when he had to do something drastic such as kill a man, even Sidney himself couldn't promise that he would be able to. He hoped it never came down to it either.

Sosuke was leaning over the post looking over the rest of the deck when Sid came bounding up towards him. Chiming happily and calling out to the captain. Sosuke stood up just as Sid stopped in front of him, happily thrusting the new map he had made at him. Sosuke looked it over, very carefully making sure not to ruin this map. It looked completely like the original, nothing at all out of place. He could tell by the strokes used for some of the writing that it was Sid's but who the heck would figure that out. He smiled, patting Sid's head like he always did. This time ruffling his hair like you would a child. "Its amazing! You've gotten better since the first time you've ever made a map." Sosuke let out a hardy laugh, one he would never allow someone to hear outside of his crew mates. However, Sid happened to be the one to hear the laugh the most. Sosuke looked at the map once more, holding it up just slightly so that the suns rays could catch it and shine upon it. He truely was proud of his navigator. Even if he had very little combat skill. Sosuke cared less about that skill, he'd rather see SId's map skills improve then that. Besides, if Sid ever ended up in a fighting situation, he always had crew members around to watch his back.

Sidney had a wide smile grow on his face when the other ruffled his hair, hearing the laugh. Sosuke's laugh was pleasant to the ears, he didn't even want the praise. The gestures alone made him feel so confident about himself. "Don't remind me! That map was horrid," he laughed. That made him remember when he was trying so hard to learn to draw the maps, and he was being taught by the previous navigator. Sadly, when he learned all the man could teach, he had to stop, giving his position to the boy. It made him feel guilty to take such an important role on the ship, but he was delighted to be given the opportunity. The previous navigator stayed around, usually Sidney would strike up a conversation, getting the older man's input every now and then. He wouldn't leave the other be either, he had so much to thank that man for. "I'm glad you like it captain." Not only did Sidney need to show his thanks towards the previous navigator, but to Sosuske as well. He never gave up on the young navigator, he always encouraged him. That probably was the reason he's where he is now. It was all due to the wonderful captain of his. Words alone couldn't show the gratitude he had for the other, always doing things to make Sosuke's life easier was his way of showing such thanks. If he could do anything to help then he would, no question's asked, ever.

Sosuke handed the map back to Sidney, clearly pleased with what he had done. Sosuke would have to thank the former navigator during their next docking. If it weren't for him, Sosuke wouldn't have such an amazing navigator now. He took pride in that fact. Many ships are lucky enough to find a navigator before their formers are killed or retire from the sea. Which happens far too often, thus is why many ships have encountered troubles and have lost their ways or have just over all stopped sailing. However, the Jade Dragon was the first ship to sail without a first mate, and even today, five years later, she still has no first mate. Sosuke felt it fine that way, first mates only seemed to get in his way, or he just couldn't seem to find the right one. He needed someone who knew him like the back of their hand in order to sail beside them with such authority. And after his childhood experiences, there was no way he'd settle for one so quickly.

Sidney gave it back to him, pursing his lips in thought. "It's for you to keep captain, I'm going to use the other map as mine for sailing. Since you can read this one then you'll know the course better," he chirped, a smile returning to his face. "I'm going to go help with the chores! Be sure to take good care of this one!" He hurried off to go help with the second deck washing before Sosuke could get in any words. He was so eager to help out, he loved to clean. The smell of fresh cleaned floors what the best, it made anyone feel accomplished. He grabbed a rag, dipping it into the mixtures in the water, and began to help one of his fellow crew mate to clean the floor. The more he helped out, the faster it would get done, making the rest of the day, a day to relax unless something came up. It would take a bit to get to the island they decided to make a quick stop at, so the days would be long and slow. He didn't have much else to do now that he finished the map, he could just do a deep cleaning of the ship, making sure to even dust the unnoticeable areas. It wasted time and it was fun for him, he enjoyed moving around constantly, cleaning enabled that. Plus, he was being useful, that's all that mattered to him. He felt his stomach grumble, waiting for the ringing of the bell to signal lunch. Embarrassed it had decided to speak for him.

Before Sosuke could even get a word of thanks to him, Sidney was already bounding away. Looking back at the map he folded it more carefully then the last and placed it in his breast pocket. It was the one coat he had that had been made with such pockets. Thus was why he wore this jacket more then others. The captain had hoped he'd be able to pass this map back to Sidney, not wanting to be the greedy one of keeping such a beautiful map. But none the less he was glad, he'd take good care of this map no matter what. He caught glimpse of Sidney on the deck wiping away the salt with a rag, and unbeknownst to him, Sosuke had been caught smiling.

"It's been seven years since I've seen that smile" Crow, the oldest of the crew members stepped beside Sosuke. Even prior to starting his pirate crew, Sosuke knew Crow from two years prior. Sosuke quickly dropped the smile and retorted, receiving a laugh from the older crew member. "Don't get me wrong, Captain, a smile looks good on ya." Sosuke decided now would be a good time to start fooling the old man. And soon the two started in a wit of games.

Sidney worked until the deck shined, even though he decided to work more just to make sure all of the salt that had collected was gone. When he finally decided to be finished with the others, the lunch bell had rung. The navigator sprung to his feet, being the first one in the eating quarters. The meal was a chowder, one of his favorites, but he sat down and waited until everyone had served themselves first. He would not break his own rule of eating before everyone else had done so first, he was taught that by his family before he decided to leave with the crew. It was one of the manners that did not leave him, most likely never would. Usually when he waited, there was still enough food for him to get as well, so he did not mind. Two of the member sat down by him, striking up a conversation about his new map that he had made. They were older than him yet he fit in with everyone one so well. It was amazing when it came to this kind of family, age didn't matter, unlike on the dry lands he used to live in. The older people were never supposed to interact with the younger ones, it was deemed inappropriate. On the ship, everyone could talk freely among themselves without having to worry about such trivial rules. Sidney truly believes this was where he was meant to be the moment he was born.

Sosuke made sure that course they were on was good enough to follow, and deemed it safe enough to let the ship sail without any eyes watching over. By the time he had stepped foot in the eating quarters, everyone including the cook had been sitting and enjoying a meal. Finding out that was one of cooks special chowders, Sosuke couldn't wait to start digging in. He grabbed himself a plate and found an empty barrel seat at the end of a table opposite the room. He didn't care where he sat, so long as he got one. There always managed to be a seat empty for him. With the size of his crew, there were normally not enough seats for everyone to sit and many members had to sit on the floor. Despite the fact that he was sometimes the last one to enter the room, Sosuke always ended up with a seat. He didn't mind sitting on the floor, it made him even more part of his crew. But being the captain, it just seemed more reasonable for him to have a seat.

Sidney saw Sosuke grab his meal, quickly getting up, knowing the captain was the only one he was waiting for. He got himself a plate, sitting back down. He started to chow down, making sure he ate every last bit without wasting. The hunger pains had left him as finished his meal, leaving barely a mess on the plate. He stood up, putting his place and spoon in the dirty dishes area, going back up to the main deck. The navigator was usually the first one out of the eating quarters, wasting no time to just sit around for a lot of idle chit chat, especially when he had to finish most of the chores so everyone had time to just relax. He started to wash the rails, knowing many had probably missed that part of the cleaning. He didn't mind putting in some extra work so everyone had a bit of free time, after this he would most likely nap. He had decided to stay awake for the night to make sure they were still on course throughout. He was being taught how to steer the ship, and he would usually watch at night with no one around to distract him. He was bored not having anyone to talk to, hoping Sosuke would finish eating, even if he was being a bit selfish about wanting to have just conversation with the other.

Sosuke noticed how Sidney was the last to grab his food and yet the first to finish. This was a regular routine for the navigator, so he made nothing of it. However he seemed in more of a rush then normal. Sosuke had finished his portion and after cleaning his silverware came up to the deck. He made sure to tell the others to finish eating. When he got to the top he had seen no sign of Sidney, at least not until he stepped to the side of the mast and spotted him on the aft deck cleaning the railings. Sosuke went over to Sidney making sure to not sneak up on the navigator, Sosuke learned the hard way not to do such a thing to someone. "Oh Sid, why are you out here cleaning by yourself?"

Sidney looked up, relieved the other was out here. "I just decided it would be best to do some extra cleaning," he hummed. It wasn't a complete lie, he was just doing it so everyone didn't have to. He'd leave that part out, knowing Sosuke would lecture him of some sort. The navigator looked up smiling at the other, showing he didn't mind cleaning by himself one bit. "I'm almost done, not much left to do." He made sure to keep moving around the railing, cleaning every spot on them, making sure not to miss an inch of the railing. He isn't what you would consider a clean freak, he just enjoyed cleaning. He always did, he was usually the most eager to help out when it came to cleaning, even when he was a kid first boarding. He usually was the one who did most of the cleaning, but that only counted with the little areas he decided to clean. They were always spots no one noticed, but he didn't like finding things such as cobwebs, they creeped him out a bit. When he cleans he was able to make sure none of that was ever around, no dust ever collected, he just made sure everything was shining. He loved the deck when it was just cleaned, the sunlight sparkling off the wet boards.

Sosuke peered down at the navigator. It was thanks to him that the ship was so spotless.. Sosuke knew that Sidney was the one who cleaned it so well. Where the others just got what was necessary to maintain the ship, Sidney went beyond that and cleaned areas that he could have cared less about cleaning. To most ships the Jade Dragon looked like it had just been built and sold to the pirate captain. Sosuke had been given a smile from the navigator and bent down to insect the railing he was cleaning. This led to him nearly inches away from Sidney;s face. He rubbed a finger across the railing and removed it. "Theres nothing that wont be spotless on this ship if your the one cleaning." He looked at Sidney as he stood up straight again. "Just make sure you arent the only one cleaning. Got it? Everyone does their part around here or there will be trouble for em."
