Stand by Me isn’t the most outstanding thing in the world. The story is average. The characters are average. The art is average. Overall, it’s just an average manga. It’s a quick read so I’d say go ahead and give it a shot, but it probably won’t make a lasting impression.
The story starts out with a large dose of adorable (which is just how I like my stories)! A young college student, Oohashi, runs into the sweet darling, Tatsuru, at the convenience store. Oohashi is sick and Tatsuru does such a great job taking care of him that he wants to date Tatsuru even though Tatsuru is uninterested. Classic storyline, which is fantastic, but there’s nothing to make it stand out. What did stick out to me was the way that Oohashi was somewhat stalkerish. There were a few places where I found myself questioning just how healthy this was. He even got the worst kind of advice from his friend on how to handle the situation, and I nearly screamed at the computer when he actually took it. Perhaps I shouldn’t have taken these moments so seriously–there’s obviously supposed to be humor in them, but I suppose I missed it.
Nevertheless, the story is cute. Seeing Tatsuru warm up to Oohashi is very sweet, and you can’t help but root for them (when Oohashi isn’t being creepy!) This, and the adorableness of the opening scene, is why I give this manga a 3 out of 5. Again, it’s not bad. But it’s not that good either.
