Spooky Business (The Spectral Files) Novel

Novel: Spooky Business

Author: S.E Harmon

Genres: Paranormal, Crime, Mystery, Romance

Released: 2020

Part of Book Series: The Spectral Files Series (#3)

Summary: Being insatiably curious is a good way to end up dead.

Rain Christiansen, cold case detective and reluctant medium, is very aware of that fact. But when infamous serial killer Thomas Kane wants to meet, there’s no way Rain can say no. He also can’t refuse Kane’s offer—find his missing wife, Delilah, and he’ll reveal the location of his victim’s bodies.

Rain has never turned down a good quid pro quo, and he doesn’t intend to start.

The hunt for Kane’s wife leads to yet another cold case, three copycat murders, and an investigation where nothing is as it seems. Soon, Rain is dealing with a ghost unlike any he’s ever dealt with before…a ghost capable of doing things he shouldn’t be able to do. How can Rain control something he doesn’t even understand? And what will he do when the unknown threatens the safety of the most important person in his life?

Rain is starting to realize that he can only battle the supernatural with the supernatural, and that is spooky business indeed.

Post’s Author Opinion:
Note: This is a personal opinion, it does not reflect YaoiOtaku’s official position towards the novel.

I have finally come to the end of the third installment of The Spectral Files and I had to say that I really enjoyed reading all the books in this series so far. Other than Rain’s family that I feel like strangling if they does exist in real life, things are looking great.

The suspense is amped up a little this time, what with Rain’s new abilities and ghosts who just can’t seem to let him go. I’m just happy that his boyfriend is a tad more understanding even though Rain likes to keep secrets especially when it comes to the offer made by his former boss a.k.a the guy who also wants to get into his pants. Thankfully the conflict is kept to a minimal, but that’s only because there are more serious things happening around them. This time, even their cold case has cases. There are quite a lot for Rain to manage, but with the support from his team, spiritual therapist and loved ones, he manages them well. Well, well-ish.

The only thing that is puzzling me still is Danny’s last name. If I’m not mistaken, his biological father’s last name is McKenna…but his adoptive mother’s name is also McKenna…Unless I understood wrongly. And there is also a spelling mistake on Rain’s last name at the beginning or the book that made me go back to the previous two just in case it was all in my mind, and it’s not. I’m really nitpicky about name spelling (but not grammar because my grammar is meh).

All in all, I hope there will be a fourth book soon, because I got the feeling that it is only the beginning for Rain. I hope the author could keep up with the sass she had given Rain and come up with more interesting plot than the first three this series had offered. No part of these books should be left unread.

A former otaku, I have retired from manga and anime and found my love in M/M novels. I have a soft spot for angst with happily ever after, but a little critical on cliches. I like uncomplicated stories, a little hint of mystery and crime as well as something that is not too heavy on the drama.

I read and write mostly in English. Unfortunately, since I started late with my English studies, I am still working on it. I'm pretty much well versed in context, but don't count too much on my grammar.
