OQ: #06

Theme: To Remember.

It's another thing I've wondered. It just hit me like an arrow, and when I thought about it..oh god.

This time it's not really a question. It'd be a discussion. Whether you'd follow my thoughts or would completely see my point - it's up to you, actually, it's up to your understanding. Not needed to comment, nor to follow my imagination. In fact, why not show me 'what else might be added to that point of mine'.

Here I go. I will firstly quote Friedrich Nietzsche. Keep in mind that quote.

It is not conflict of opinions that has made history so violent but conflict of belief in opinions, that is to say conflict of convictions.

I will actually tell you how that thought hit me. I was having a drink with friends, you know, hanging out with the folks on your sweet Friday night - time for relaxation. Just like that. There were three of them that entered something like a dispute. The rest, including me, we were just watching/listening (partly, since it was only me fully quiet during the conversation). The three of them were standing up for their 'memories'. One claimed that a certain event that has happened a few weeks ago has happened in one way. The other one claimed that they don't remember it this way, but other way. The third part however claimed truths from each part, "Yes, it was like that but also like this, however it wasn't really like you say". So, let's take for a moment that all versions of the event were true.

Make a pause now. ...In this world it's certainly possible to have the existence of one,two or more lies, but is it possible to have the existence of more than one 'truth'? ..Or is it vice versa...?

Then I thought, if I take the event for nothing like their words. And that neither of them fully remember the situation and then don't lie on purpose - then it's an error in their brain. In fact, it's possible.

I remember there was an experiment in the past. They tested the human's brain. On a street, during the day, they simulated a robbery. The chosen crowd for the experiment didn't know what the experiment would be, but all witnessed the event. They saw how the robber was dressed, supposedly they saw (depending on what they focused on) what he tried to steal and how the victim was dressed in.

After one hour or so, the psychologists asked the witnesses for details.

The robber wore a dark hat, but in the statement of theirs, the hat was red, yellow, blue and even white.

The conclusion of this experiment was that the human brain keeps a certain amount of information, but if important parts are forgotten or not seen well - without your knowledge, the brain replaces the information. It's without your knowledge, you don't even know you say 'a lie'. Your brain does it on its own, replacing a memory with another one, false one.

Back then I thought...'Holy shit. If that's how it is...then how I am sure that certain things from my past are the way I remember them?'

Let's go back to my story with my friends. I was quietly listening to their dispute, to their 'belief in their memory/opinion'. And I wondered,"How funny it is. The atmosphere is escalating into some kind of a fight...is this what we do when we believe strictly in our mind/memory/beliefs/and even our eyes? What if I tell them that neither of them remembers it correctly?"

The funny thought then hit me,"Hah. If I were the evil master-brain that controls the world, how easy it would be to make people fight, to lead wars and even to kill. Just by making their memories false."

Then...I recalled the experiment. And I knew. If my brain is capable of thinking this, then surely someone already thought about it. And I glanced to my drink and wondered, "What if they make us consume something, whatever it is, that stimulates that brain's bug...and all our memories are replaced after time?"

Certainly...I have been already in some disputes with people. About things that they remember one way and I remembering it other way. So I thought, "It's not impossible. But if that's the case, we surely are fucked up. For we long forgot what we lived, what we saw and what we learned."

Then, if that's possible. Not only they may control the memories, but also the emotions based on the memories and also the thing we make as a conclusion to what we lived. They can twist the right from the wrong, and the wrong from the right. They can change this world's 'TRUTH'.

These thoughts scared me truly. I wonder...is there something that my brain replaced yet? And if so...I sincerely want to retrieve the true memoir. No matter what it is, even if some sad moment was not so sad. Even if a happy moment wasn't really happy. I want to remember but not the false scenery. Do you, in case that's true, want to remember? (:

I never knew that it could happen. I also wonder how many of the things I recall are made of my brain. :2yoyo4: I would want to recall all the things as they were too. :hamtaro-005 (6):

...Interesting theme....I like it a lot precisely because it's a discussion. : )

There was a case like this before.

In a dark night there was a father, his grown son and his friends, they were in an yard in front of their house. A car suddenly stopped, the driver opened the window, put a gun out and shot the father, causing his death.

The police soon started investigating and found a suspect. They put the suspect in front of the eyewitnesses and all them said that was him. Until there, any problem was found.

However. The defense lawer and a specialist did a reconstitution of the crime's scene and proved the teenagers were wrong in their statements. They managed to prove with their expertise that it was too dark to any human be able to see a man inside a car. And it was crucial to see the face of the criminal for recognition.

In the end the not guilty man was freed after so many years in prison.

So.

If the brain have a vacuum, it fills the information that's not there.. Not originally stored. Whatever the source, influence, speculation, information....You unconsciously made it up.

And worse. It happens with everybody in their whole lives.

My humble opinion is. The world is made of lies. You can see it a thousand times and history proves it as well. Some facts are the ''known truth'' and one day there's a suddenly discover of ''new'' truths and everything you studied and believed so far crumble.

But that's not the main problem. The scary and disturbing thing is when the truth is not showed. When it is so twisted and disgusting that gets hidden deep inside, to evade horror, to evade society's collapse. Some believed that it will avoid a much greater dangerous and cruel fate.

But again. How do we know? How if even our own memories are covered with lies that our brain makes to fill the blanks? So add it with the society known "truth" (If not brainwashing), then I can't help but wonder....my beliefs, our beliefs. Are really ours?

"The funny thought then hit me,"Hah. If I were the evil master-brain that controls the world, how easy it would be to make people fight, to lead wars and even to kill. Just by making their memories false.""

Sure it would be. If you made a drug or bug powerful enough to make people believe in something with their hearts. It would dictate the ''truth''. The person in charge would have the most useful subordinates ever.

But that's not the scariest part....What if that's already happening and we aren't not even noticing?

Hey ''Never" what you mean? Have you gone senile?

No. People. Remember the media for instance. So think again. Are we really not being brainwashed and controlled already?: )

"These thoughts scared me truly. I wonder...is there something that my brain replaced yet? And if so...I sincerely want to retrieve the true memoir. Personally I want to remember. But ''truly'' recall even the sad experiences since they help me grown. A pretty happy fairy tale won't take me very far.

....I think we discussed it once a long time ago in the Gen Chat. But again how can I prove it with my fallible memory? XD

Reminds me of that girl who had the false memories implanted by her psychiatrist (or more urged by) about the satanist rituals...can't remember what her name was though...

This is quite interesting, your thoughts about it and other's as well :)

The experiment that you wrote about, made me think that it's maybe more likely to remember more details if given more time to look at a person/picture/object. I'm not totally sure how fast the fake robbery happened, but there can be a chance that the people there didn't totally focus on the man robbing, maybe they thought about something else like an escape route or is he going to take a hostage.

Maybe there's also a chance that our brain shapes the memories according to what we would like or something like that, well I'm no expert on the human brain... These are just my own thoughts ^^''

As Never already said, its because the Brain fills in the blanks with stereotypes, why your friends fought over the same memory

and thats because or Brains, those "unmatched" Supercomputers, are generally really LAZY!

It needs a lot of energy, so the brain memorizes only episodically, thats called Sequenzial Longterm Memories, and whenever something disturbes that progress, because, say youre drunk, undernourished, it happened to fast etc... It fills the moments we impossibly COULDNT (unless you have a Photographically Memory) record, it fills those moments up.

And just for a second, Think "Robber!"

What did you see? A dark figure? Leather Jacket maybe? Baseball Cap?

We stored hundrets of those images...

If you could change the way we think? Wake up!

It Happens! Everyday! TV? Our Beauty Ideals? And so on, and so forth...

Its kinda reeeally sad...

Oh, and theres even a Name for this: "Priming"

And because our Brains are lazy, it practically shuts down whenever it isnt needed,

like when were walking to work or something...

It leaves us to be steered by reflexes, we dont think, unless we want...

I tried for a while to keep my brain active, See evrything, question my actions...

Its nearly impossible!

Thats also why illusions work, our brain backstabs us

and creates our very own Matrix. And we all took the... Was it the.. Blue Pill...? Cant remember!

You could write books about it, but... There already are some! :D
