Catriona didn't necessarily consider this his most graceful win, and perhaps it wasn't even anything that could be considered a win, but he'd take it. He smiled at Stillang as he got up and left, watching him until he disappeared from sight. Afterwards he met eyes with his rival. Maybe one day, in the very, very distant future, the two of them could be friends. Catriona quite liked this man's quick wit and he could see himself not only learning from him, but maybe even teaming up with him at some point.

The young heir laughed to himself. Maybe he really was changing. Never before would even consider working with someone. Nevermind if this man wanted to do so or not; the fact that Catriona even considered it made him feel like he'd grown some. Maybe the mercury king would proud of his son's quick progress. Then again, probably not. Well, he didn't want to dwell on a topic as dull as his father. The visit to Stillang's office was far more interesting. The hour went by slowly, and all of Catriona's excitement welled in his heart. He was grinning throughout the entire dinner and once it was over he immediately made his way with a servant to the cobalt leader's office.

The command to take off his clothes took him aback, but he found himself obeying faster than he had at the beginning of this journey. Normally he didn't like people seeing him with nothing, but Stillang was different. For some reason Catriona wanted this man's eyes on him. He wanted him to see all of him, to look him up and down and approve of what he saw. He wanted Stillang to admire his body, to compliment his silver skin, to find him more attractive than that silly rival from dinner. Maybe that was why when all of his clothes were off, Catriona felt the need to take his hair down. It fell over his shoulders and down to his knees, though he pushed behind him as he walked to the desk and sat down on it.

He spread his legs, a blush forming on his cheeks when Stillang spread them more. He swallowed hard, looking up and down at the man in front of him. They were so close... Just when Catriona thought he would burst from the storm of emotions inside of him Stillang gently, teasingly took the cage off of the mercury's cock. A soft whimper escaped Catriona and he bit his lip to try and stifle it. It was even harder when the vibration went through him. He tried to keep calm, mostly wanting to seem more like an adult than he was. Not that it worked. He didn't mean to, but his head slowly rolled backwards, his lips parting as soft moans left them. When did he actually start to enjoy this? Or maybe it was just because Stillang was so close to him.

His body worked on autopilot as his hand gripped Stillang's. He focused his eyes back on the other man, his eyelids closed halfway. "I'll leave when you tell me to," he said, his voice thick and husky. He'd certainly never heard himself sound like that before. "I just... I don't know why I want to know, but I just... Can you tell me if you like what you see? Do you think I'm attractive?" He swallowed hard again as another vibration burst through him. He wanted to tell Stillang that he didn't quite understand these feelings. No one had ever stirred up these emotions inside of him and he didn't know how to handle them. Perhaps Catriona would learn more from Stillang than he thought.

Even though he doesn't say it, the cobalt is pleased with how swiftly and eagerly the young mercury did as he was told. When the other male tries to stifle his moans then slowly gives in ever so slightly, Stillang allows a small pleased smile to form. "That's right. Let it all out, I want to hear just how much this is affecting you." He rumbles while letting his thumb lightly stroke the other's sack as his fingers continue to lightly press the pulsing metal into the other.

Part of the cobalt leader is surprised that the inexperienced mercury is able to even ask questions, however, it is a good sign that the other is seeking validation from the cobalt and even becoming emotionally vulnerable. "Come now, do you think I would go through all this trouble of punishing you and teaching you if I didn't get something out of it?" His tone is low, pleasant, and a slight hint of huskiness to it. After all, it would take a much stronger man than Stillang to be unaffected by the sight in front of him.

"Perhaps if you're really good I'll give you small taste of what my rewards can be like. Or perhaps you actually like the punishments and want me to keep giving you those? I bet you'd even like a good spanking if the circumstance was right. Get that soft, plump skin pink and tender so that every touch sends a spark through you." Stillang murmurs while slowly leaning closer until the words are being almost purred in the other's ear.

Glancing down between them, he notices the stiff and leaking member and gives a quick grin. "I'll even let you come this time if you can do so quickly. However, if you can't keep from doing so after tonight, until I take the rest off, then I'll have to take measures so you can't come unless I allow it." His hand moves from the vibrating part to lightly brush up along mercury's straining flesh.

"Alright, show me how well you can listen. Come, now." He gives a quick nip to Catriona's earlobe then straightens to watch the other in his release. With a finger he lightly scoops up some of the spent material and gives a quick flick of his tongue to take a taste before inserting the rest into the mercury's mouth, having him taste himself and a hint of the cobalt.

"Once you finish cleaning that off you may go to your room." Stillang comments while watching the form beneath him and looking forward to the day when the male begs to be taken fully by the cobalt leader. If not for his excellent control now, and anticipation and how much sweeter it will be to have the other be desperate for him, then he would have taken him right on the desk.

Each word Stillang whispered made Catriona's heart pound. It was if he wielded them as a weapon, and knew exactly how to defeat Catriona with them. Each one traveled into his ear and down his body, and he hardly realized just how erect he was. All he could register was the warmth flowing down his body and how close he was to Stillang. Catriona's head was spinning; he knew he wasn't dizzy, but rather... Something else. These feelings that were exploding inside of him took each and every one of his inhibitions. He couldn't control his tiny whimpers as Stillang spoke; he wanted to say this and that, but his words wouldn't work. All he could was offer Stillang those small, tiny mewls.

His voice only rose when he felt Stillang's hand brush against his hardened member. "T-Touch me again..." he mumbled, again not realizing that he had spoken at all. He slowly fell back until he was laying down entirely, his cock pointing straight at the ceiling as he too stared at it. Another whimper left him at the little nip and he jerked as he let his own fingers glide across his cock. While this wasn't the first time he had done this, it was the first time he'd felt so sensuous. Honestly he couldn't really remember the last time he touched himself. Not that he was thinking about too hard. He mostly wanted Stillang to keep his eyes on him as he stroked himself.

Catriona's unfamiliar body didn't take too long to release. His back arched and he reached for Stillang as his cry resonated through the office. After his body jerked a few times he fell back on the desk, his breathing heavy and coming in hard gasps. "S-Still..." His words still didn't work, but he could certainly moan. That was exactly what he did when he saw Stillang scoop some of his come and lick it. Those moans increased when Catriona tasted it himself. He turned away initially, displeased with the salty, strange taste that invaded his mouth. Yet, Stillang's finger wasn't unwelcome. Catriona whimpered a few more times before listening to Stillang's next command.

In reality, he didn't want to go. He stared at Stillang, his legs open, his eyes glazed, his lips parted, his breathing coming out as moans and whimpers. How could he possibly leave now? All he wanted was to stay with Stillang a bit longer. Disobeying the other man was out of the question, though. Instead, he focused on cleaning himself. After clearing his throat, he managed to mumble out "how can I clean myself without a towel?"

His eyes shut fully as he ran his finger through the mess on his chest and stomach. He repeated what Stillang had done and licked his finger clean. The taste was still strange, but he wondered if he would become accustomed to it. "Do people normally do this?" he asked quietly as he slowly sat up, his head rolling towards Stillang.

God, he wasn't ready to leave. "S-Stillang..." The young heir climbed on all fours on the desk, placing himself directly in front of the cobalt leader. "Can I have a kiss before I go? Please kiss me, Lord Stillang?" he whispered.

With or without his kiss he did leave and dawdled back to his bedroom. Sleep came both easy and not; he dreamed of Stillang that night and when he woke to Tam poking at him he couldn't even find it in himself to be aggravated. Rather he grabbed the young boy and squeezed the very unappreciative Tam.

"I know, Tam! Let's see if Altria will let us help serve breakfast! We can serve Lord Stillang and give them a much better meal than last time."

It came as no surprise to Catriona that Altria was hesitant to accept his offer. Even so, she eventually relented to the begging of both Catriona and Tam. She provided them with uniforms, and as a test specifically for the mercury, she gave him a tray with glasses full of various drinks. She told him what each drink was and placed him at the door to the dining area to offer the drinks to those who walked in. Unfortunately, he didn't remember what they all were. He knew most of them just by looking at them, but others were unfamiliar.

"Hello," he said as a group of men walked towards him. "So I have for you... Umm... Juice. And... Water. There's some coffee... I think..."

At least he wasn't dropping the glasses.

When the mercury begins to clan himself off, Stillang is surprised but pleased at the show the smaller male puts on. He had only meant for the other male to clean off the cobalt's finger, not the entire mess he had made on himself. Still, he isn't going to complain.

The mercury continues to surprise and please him when the other seems reluctant to go and even begs for a kiss. While tempting to give one, he can't spoil the other too much just yet. It simply wouldn't do to undo the hard work that had been done so far. Instead he tilts the other's face up. "When you earn a kiss little mercury, and learn to ask in the right way, then you shall be gifted with one. Now it is time for bed." Just before the other leaves he calls out a reminder. "Remember, you're not allowed to come again until I say so. Not unless you want to be punished."

The next day greets the cobalt leader with another surprise by the mercury. He is willingly serving breakfast. Clearly still struggling in the role, but it is obvious that the struggle is due to the unfamiliarity of the task versus a barely checked temper. "I'll take coffee, thank you." When given his drink Stillang gives Catriona a pleased smile, but lets him continue his job without distracting him. For the moment.

Once the tray is empty of drinks, however, and the young male is headed back to the kitchen the portion of Catriona's punishment still in place begin to give a low consistent vibration. Almost like a massage than anything, but still stimulation in a most sensitive area.

Unlike the last meal he had attempted to serve, this one passes pleasantly and quickly. After those attending finish eating and part ways, Stillang pauses to address the other male. "You did well. I approve of the initiative you showed, and I do hope it continues." He lightly strokes the silver cheek before pushing some hair back behind the other's ear. "If it does, perhaps you'll even get a small reward tonight."

With a parting smile, he turns and leaves letting Catriona imagine what that potential reward might be. Perhaps it would be that kiss he had asked for last night, or maybe the lord would touch the other in new ways. One thing is for certain though, the punishment will not be lessened any further unless something truly shocking is done. Otherwise he has until at least tomorrow night to enjoy the reminder of how his time with the cobalts started.

Every kingdom differed in one way or another, and Catriona wondered if the Cobalts were always this helpful and supportive of one another. A small ping of hurt hit his heart when he thought back to how little his parents or other adults of the Mercury kingdom did much of anything to help him grow. They never said kind words or guided him one way or another. Meanwhile, Catriona had received more support and kindness and guidance from a child than he had from anyone in his home. Mercury was toxic in more ways than one.

The feeling of having someone proud of him was unfamiliar to Catriona, so he relished in Stillang's words about his performance. Even when he was taken off guard by the soft vibration down below he simply smiled at the leader. He managed to walk back to the kitchen where he sighed and tried to control himself. A server asked if he was okay and he simply nodded his head before trying to get back to work. Thankfully, the feeling subsided... Well, not thankfully... But at least he could focus on the breakfast.

"Thank you, Lord Stillang," Catriona said with a bow. When all of the diners were gone Catriona and Tam laughed with each other at their success before sitting against a wall once everything was cleaned up. The day only just started and already Catriona was on cloud nine. He and Tam excitedly chatted with one another about how they keep up this wonderful progress and what next steps to take so Stillang continued to see the young mercury's progress. It was then that Tam brought up something that he knew would upset Catriona, but he also felt could help improve his relationship with Stillang.

"So... Do you think you can tell me about the horses? I heard so much about it, but..."

"Mercy, those stupid, goddamn horses. I swear they're gonna haunt me for the rest of my life. Look, Tam, I don't even--"

"You don't need to get mad!"

Catriona let an aggravated whine. Tam was right. He had been good about not getting mad. Nevermind the whole catty conversation between him and that escort; that didn't count. It wouldn't do to get angry especially at Tam. So instead he told the young man the entire story. He told him everything that happened that first day when coming here, and sweet Tam said no words of judgment nor scolded him. Rather, he offered advice.

"You remember how you made the dog when you first met me? Do you think you can make a horse? Like... A permanent one?" Catriona blinked at his words. A mercury horse was a poor replacement, but the reality was that he could. He was a bit of an expert in creating those types of things, and while a fake horse would never suffice to replace the real ones, perhaps this could be a peacekeeper until Catriona managed to truly make up for what he had done.

"You're a genius, Tam."

Catriona spent the next hour perfecting his mercury horse. Never once had he spent this much time on one of his little animals, but this one needed to have as much detail as possible. It needed to show it's mane flowing behind it, the curves of it's muscles, the design of it's horseshoe. The horse itself was rearing, which made it even harder for Catriona to get every detail right, but once he was satisfied with it he stood and carefully brought it to Stillang's office. He knocked on the door, called to Stillang, and only entered when he was invited.

"Hello, Lord Stillang. I was wondering if I could speak with you." He walked to the desk and held his mercury horse in front of him, not yet putting it on the desk in case Stillang rejected it. "I made this for you. It's a horse. I suppose I never truly apologized for what happened that day with the horses. I'm truly sorry. Really, I just... I'm so sorry. I know I can never bring them back and I promise to replace them as soon as I get back home, but until then... This is for you."

Catriona took a deep breath as he extended the horse to the Cobalt leader. "I made it from my quicksilver. I can make the silver solid or steam or liquid. If you decide you'd like to have this token of my apology, then I just ask that you put it somewhere other's can't get it. It can shatter easily. Mercury is rather fragile." Catriona smiled softly at the other man, teasing him with flirting that he didn't even know he was capable of. He could only hope that Stillang was open to the apology and the gift.

Stillang looks up and allows the mercury to enter. He is curious about the item in the other's hands, but waits until he finishes speaking. By the end the lord gifts him with a smile. "That is very thoughtful of you, and very mature. We have gotten replacements already, but if you should find any that you think would be good additions then I will gladly accept them."

Standing up the cobalt goes around the desk to stand before Catriona. Gently he takes the gift with one hand while the other tilts his head up by the chin. "I think that calls for a reward hm?" Not really a question he leans down and gives the previously asked for kiss. First with a light pressing of lips, the cobalt then licks the others lips before pressing more firmly as the slick flesh slides into the other's mouth. The hand continues to hold the silver skinned male in place as slowly, but surely, the lord finds and lays claim to each crevice.

Pulling back, a pleased look is in Stillang's eyes as he takes stock of the other. "That is enough for now. Off with you now, I have a lot to do." Which is, sadly, true. He has to meet with other cobalts to determine who is going where for their assignments, get debriefings from those returning, and then make sure that nothing will need him directly involved. He's not sure if he trusts leaving the mercury alone in the clan home or taking him with just yet. It hadn't even been a week after all.

By the time it is all taken care of, it is after dinner and the cobalt leader goes to a small study to unwind. It isn't heavily furnished, merely a large chair, a low sitting bookcase on one wall, and a side table. As he sips on a drink, the pretty cobalt from before enters with a small smile. The chair is set in a corner facing just off from the door, so that whoever is sitting in it can see who enters without being directly in front of the door.

"I thought you might be here my lord. Shall I help you relax?" They purr softly while gracefully falling into a kneeling position at Stillang's feet, hands lightly running up his legs to pause on the thighs.

Setting his drink on the table, he threads one hand into the kneeling cobalt's hair and pulls him forward. "I think that is an excellent idea. Let's start with that talented mouth of yours Livius while you get yourself ready for me." Livius shivers slightly while moving to expose the cobalt leader's cock. Leaning in, licking his lips, he begins to lick and suck at the exposed flesh while working to undo his own clothes.

Soon the kneeling cobalt is working a finger into his hole while working to swallow his lord's member down his throat. Stillang has a hand tightly fisted in the other's hair while watching, eyes lidded. Once he sees the other working on adding a third finger in, uses his grip to pull the other off getting a soft whine in response. Ignoring the other, he stands. "Bend over the arm of the chair."

Livius eagerly does as he's bid, legs spread wide and trembling slightly with excitement. Gripping the other's hips he slides his slicked cock along the exposed hole for a moment before pushing in causing a soft shout from the male beneath him. Working without care for how ready the other is, the lord settles into a quick pace but sides in deep. Soon the cobalt is moaning and arching into the thrusts trying to get more, keening slightly when he feels his lord's fingers biting into his hips.

"You may cum." Stillang grunts and soon after the smaller male does with long moan. With a low growl the cobalt lord soon follows.

Both stay put to enjoy the sensation before slowly moving and redressing. Soon they part ways and, since Stillang did not invite the other for another round or back to his room, to their own quarters.

Catriona never once had the pleasure of being kissed like this before, and it most certainly was a pleasure. He let Stillang do as he wanted; Catriona was unsure of how to proceed so he did his best to follow the other man's lead. This was something the young heir could get used to, something he truly wanted more of. Pulling away became one of the hardest things he'd had to do. Why these wonderful things needed to end was beyond him... Well not entirely. He knew Stillang was a busy man, and he had to respect that. With a bow and thanks, Catriona left.

The rest of the day was spent with Tam attempting to teach him more about the Cobalt people. It was an interesting lesson to say the least, but the more interesting part of the day came at the end when a most unexpected person sought out the young mercury.

"Altria?"

She nodded at the boys, a warm smile on her face that Catriona had never seen before. "It's almost time for Tam to go to bed, isn't it? I'll take over watching Catriona for now. I want to show him something as a reward for doing so well today." What that thing was neither of them knew, but Catriona was excited to have gained some trust from the woman. After a small chit-chat Tam left and the mercury followed Altria to what he eventually learned would be a study.

"There's a special book in there filled with all sorts of Cobalt recipes. Some of them are quite old, others have been added in more recent years. I know part of your education here is so learn more about our culture so I figured you might have an interest in studying the cookbook."

"You're not worried I'll steal your recipes?"

"More like I'm not worried you'll ever be able to recreate them properly." She laughed and Catriona laughed along with her. His whole demeanor somehow managed to change in just under a week. It made him wonder if he was truly the problem with the mercury kingdom or if they were the ones driving him to behave and feel the way he did. He had never laughed with anyone there or felt a connection to any sort of person except a few children. Maybe the Catriona he knew from the Mercury kingdom was not the true Catriona. Maybe this was who he really was.

"I'm honored that you feel you can show me this book."

"Well, if you ruin it I'll personally kill you. I'll run a steak knife right through that silver heart of yours--I assume even your insides are silver--so don't fuck up."

"Jeez, okay."

Their lighthearted conversation continued until they reached the study. Altria opened the door and stepped in only to let out a gasp and a quick "excuse me I'm sorry!" before closing it immediately. She cleared her throat, thankful that she didn't bring Tam along with them. "Well, I suppose we'll be getting that book tomorrow then."

"Was... Was that... Was-was... Was that...."

Altria blinked at Catriona, tilting her head at his strange behavior. "You broken or something? Spit it out."

"That was Stillang! That was Stillang and that whore! No!" Just before Catriona could start banging on the door Altria grabbed him around his waist and pulled him away. He thrashed the entire time and though the young woman struggled she managed to make it to a deserted hallway far enough from the study. "The hell is wrong with you??"

"He was with him again!" Catriona cried, his voice breaking with each and every word. Altria's concern grew when she finally got a good look at him. His chest was heaving up and down and those pure white eyes of his were now blood shot. Nevermind that he was trembling and shaking all over. Part of her wanted to run off and call the medic, but there was no way she could leave this boy here by himself.

"Okay, just calm down--"

"Why is he with that man?? He's not even pretty! He's ugly as sin!" Catriona's words ran together, mixing with his inconsistent tone and volume. It was as if he had lost control of his own voice and couldn't decide if he wanted to scream, whine, or whimper. "Why doesn't he just forget about him? It's not like Stillang can't do better! Plus that guy is so fucking old I can't even imagine how long he's been on this earth."

"He's like maybe two years older than me so stop saying that--"

"I can't I can't I can't I can't!" Catriona tangled his hands in his hair and let out a scream; had Altria not been right in front of him she would have thought he was getting murdered. Children were never her strong suit, and right now she had no idea what to do with this overgrown child.

"Why are you acting like this? You've only just met Lord Stillang! It's not--"

"Why did he do those things with me if he wasn't interested in me?" Realization hit Altria in that moment. Catriona's shaky, distraught words painted a clear picture for her to see. She pitied the young man. He was truly the most ignorant person she had ever met. Did he really have no idea that people often slept around? That nothing was sacred unless it became sacred? Did he realize what he'd have to do if he wanted Stillang to allow him and only him in his bed? She shook her head as she gripped the young heir's shoulders.

"You need to get to bed and stop thinking about this. I'll try to explain how these things work tomorrow, okay? For now--"

"No! I need to see him now! I need to talk to him now!"

Catriona ran off in the direction of Stillang's bedroom faster than Altria had ever seen him move. The young mercury was exceptionally quick and lithe. With enough training he would make an excellent warrior. Not that this was helpful to her now. She only managed to catch up with him once they were at Stillang's door and he was banging on it like a maniac. "Come out here and talk to me now! Why do you keep doing this to me? Why would you do those things with me if you're just going to go to back to him? Stillang!" Catriona screamed at the door as his fists pounded on it. Thankfully being small and quick meant that Catriona didn't carry much in the way of raw strength. Altria managed to drag him from the door and toss him to the ground where he continued to hyperventilate.

"Lord Stillang, please help me." Altria had had enough. Next time she wanted to do something nice she'd remind herself that no good deed goes unpunished.

Shortly after Altria calls for him, Stillang opens the door still damp from his bath. Seeing the sight outside of his door, and having heard some of what the hysterical mercury had been yelling, lets out a short sigh. "Enough Catriona." He states firmly, looking down at the hyperventilating mercury. "You will calm yourself this instant or be taken to your room immediately." His tone leaves no room for argument.

"You seem to forget your place here and that I am the lord, not you. There is nothing between us that prevents us from enjoying the company of others, and unless that is a commitment you are willing to make I am not about to force myself into a life of celibacy to please you." He states simply and to the point. "Whatever is between myself and Livius is just that, between us. Just as what happens between you and I have no bearing on him." Both men enjoy the other's company, it's true, but neither expect the other to be theirs alone.

"I will not discussing this further with you unless you can behave in a manner that is acceptable." Looking up he flags a nearby cobalt. "Make sure he gets to his room. No detours." The cobalt nods and maneuvers the mercury to begin walking him to his room. Breathing heavily out of his nose, the cobalt leader watches as the silver form is taken away before turning to his cook. "I am sorry you had to deal with Altria. Please feel free to go and turn in for the night."

With that, he gives the other a nod and goes back into his room. His pleasant mood now gone. What does that spoiled child take him for? A monk? It is clear that Catriona is in need of some more insight than what Tam can provide. With that he ponders who he should have take on the task of explaining adult relationships or the way open relationships work. With another sigh he wonders if someone should also explain to the mercury just what it is the other is expecting of Stillang, and what the other would be required to do to make their relationship monogamous.

"An issue for the morning." He mutters knowing that the explanation needs to come from someone other than himself due to nature of his relationship with the mercury. The power dynamic alone would make it an issue, let alone the basis for how their relationship started. With a glance at the mercury horse on his shelf, the cobalt finally turns in for the night.

Not enough people put stock in the importance of having a routine. Getting up every morning with the assurance that you had something to do and needed to do it well could sometimes be the difference between life or death. It sounded dramatic, but it was something Altria truly believed in. That was why she made her way to the mercury's bedroom first thing in the morning. Little Tam beat her to the punch, but wasn't having any luck in getting Catriona out of bed. After the spectacle the young heir put on last night Altria realized that Catriona's issues ran far deeper than just an arrogant, entitled personality. Now that he was going through a transition, trying to understand others and learn more about himself, he needed something to keep him grounded.

A routine.

"I need you both to help me with breakfast."

"No, you don't."

Altria cringed at Catriona's hoarse voice. She could only imagine he spent most of the night screaming and crying, which would explain why the guards looked like their heads were about to explode. Regardless, she wouldn't take no for an answer. It took far more coaxing than she wanted to give, but he eventually sat up. Progress. "Just work the breakfast with me, Catriona. Afterwards you can come back here unless Lord Stillang says otherwise. You can mope and hide under your blanket and do whatever you want, but only after you've completed your assignment. I promise, getting up and doing something will make you feel better." It wasn't her responsibility to make sure Catriona did anything at all, but she did it partly for him and more for Stillang. There was no need for her lord to carry this burden on his own. She, along with Tam, the guards, and whoever else, would share the burden.

Catriona scoffed, though got up and began to dress himself anyway. Why would he care about getting up and doing anything? To say he managed to do something? To be proud of himself? There was a time in his life when he would never doubt the pride he carried, but after spending time in the Cobalt kingdom he wondered what exactly he should have been proud of. When did he suddenly lose his confidence or did he even have it to begin with? Did he delude himself into thinking he was so much more than he was just because he was royalty? That mattered little to the people in this kingdom. They valued more than just titles; they valued things that Catriona didn't have. Respect. Kindness. Manners. Remorse. Hard work. He had done a good job showing these things recently, but his episode last night made him feel like he hadn't learned much of anything.

His tired brain spun these thoughts around over and over. He just didn't understand. There was so little he understood, and he didn't know how he could learn. Even he could admit that the things he needed help with were far beyond Tam's pay grade. How could he learn anything and build himself into the person he truly wanted to become, the person he always saw himself as when he didn't understand a single damn thing?

One step at a time. He took Altria's advice and simply worked on memorizing the drinks to hand out to the diners, which surprisingly worked out well. As the diners came through he managed to introduce every drink on his tray, though he often had to clear his raw throat in the process. It also helped that he could keep his eyes open to make people think he was making eye contact with them. No matter who passed he cast his eyes downward, but because of their whiteness not many people often knew where he was looking. (Though he doubted Lord Stillang would be fooled by this trick.)

Surprisingly enough Catriona was proud of himself for managing to accomplish such a small thing. That pride, however, quickly left when history repeated itself. A server mistakingly thought Catriona was assigned to carry some of the dishes to the diners. The still shaky Catriona only managed to get so far before the tray along with all of the food crashed to the ground. He stood there with his hands over his face, looking like he was about to burst out in tears until Altria came to the rescue.

"It's no problem. Take this opportunity to learn, okay? We can show you how to clean up broken dishes without hurting yourself. Deep breaths now. No one expects you to not make mistakes and do everything perfectly, Catriona. You've only just begun, and we all know you have a lot to learn. It's okay." Catriona wondered if she meant just this meal or everything in general. Either way he nodded his head and paid attention to the server who showed him how to clean up this mess. The server spoke to him slowly and gently as if he were a bomb about to detonate, but in reality Catriona was a bit distracted. His eyes kept moving towards Lord Stillang....

The rest of the breakfast went well and everyone soon departed. Catriona and Tam were free to go as well, but Catriona sought out one of Stillang's servants. He was unsure how protocol worked here and Tam wasn't exactly much help as he, like Catriona, tended to simply barge into Stillang's office when he pleased. Catriona asked the servant how he could arrange an audience with Lord Stillang. The servant was taken aback, but motioned for Catriona to follow him to Lord Stillang's office. The young heir waited outside of the door as the servant knocked and let Stillang know that Catriona wished to make an appointment to see him. Normally, the servant had other ways of doing such a thing, but anything involving the mercury tended to be handled as quickly and painlessly as possible.

The servant, however, did nod towards the door to indicate that the heir was right behind it. Should Stillang choose to see him now the opportunity was right there. If not, then the servant would simply send Catriona away until the leader was ready to see him.

Stillang watched as there was a sense of d?j? vu when the mercury is serving a meal and once again drops a tray. Thankfully this time around everyone is more at ease and no one is blamed for what is clearly an accident. Once back in his office he summons Livius to discuss the other helping to teach the more adult rules and expectations to Catriona.

"Lord Stillang." The cobalt greets with a bow once granted entry to the office.

The cobalt clan leader gives a small smile and nod before waving at a chair, indicating the other may sit. Once the other cobalt has settled into a seat, Stillang looks at them over steepled fingers. "Thank you for coming Livius. I have to ask something of you and, while I hope you'll accept it, please do not feel obligated to do so." He states after a short moment.

Livius, by this point, is curious. While there is affection and a bit of history between the two cobalts, there isn't anything more. For all intents and purposed they are more of a friends with benefits than anything.

"What might this task be my lord?" The curious cobalt asks, though feeling it has something to do with the most recent addition to the clan. Personally he found the little mercury almost adorable and fairly amusing. Had the other not started right in with the age jabs, an offer of friendship might even have been extended after their little spat.

"I would like you, along with perhaps Altria since she has his respect, to teach Catriona about the more adult aspects of being here. Or just being an adult in general perhaps, seeing as how his knowledge in that area is astoundingly lacking." Stillang finishes in a dry tone, eyes slightly narrowed as he mentally curses the mercury clan for saddling him with this task.

To say that Livius is taken by surprise at the request would be an understatement. Yet he has, of course, heard about the tumultuous relationship between the mercury and the cobalt leader as well as heard that the mercury had seen their tryst last night. Tapping a thoughtful finger against one lip, the cobalt thinks on the request for several moments before nodding. "Very well. I accept the task."

A sigh of relief escapes the cobalt leader and he gives the other a thankful smile. "Thank you Livius."

Just then there is a knock on the door and a servant enters indicating that said mercury is outside the door. Stillang raises an eyebrow. "Interesting timing." He mutters before nodding. "I can see him now. It is actually fortunate as this saves either of us the trouble of getting him later."

Catriona is then admitted into the office and is waved to the other open seat. "Take a seat." He waits until the other does as bid then slightly tilts his head at the cobalt in the other chair. "I am sure you remember Livius. He has agreed to help teach you in the areas that Tam is unable to, due to his age as well as inexperience."

Catriona froze in his tracks when he walked inside of the office. The sight of Livius took him more than off guard. If his throat wasn't so sore from his hysterical crying last night he might have actually yelped. It brought back a memory--one of his puppies had ran into his room only to stop short and start shivering once he saw Catriona's newest, largest, scariest looking dog. Catriona felt like that intimidated puppy as he slowly walked into the room, eyeing Livius and leaning as far away from him as he could once he took a seat. By now, Catriona didn't know what to feel or how to react. All he wanted was to please Stillang. He wanted whatever pride Stillang had in him and his progress to stay.

And the last person he wanted to spend time with was Livius.

"W-what?" Catriona blinked at Stillang before casting his eyes over at the other man. All at once, Catriona was hit with the unfamiliar emotion of regret. Why did he have to pick a fight with Livius? Why did he have to lose his mind when he saw him with Stillang? Why did he have to bother Stillang about it? If he could go back in time he would slap the mercury out of himself until he learned to not start shit and annoy others. "N-no, you can't be serious. I understand that there are certain things Tam can't teach me, but can't Altria take over for that kind of stuff? Or you? Or... I don't know. Just... I just..."

Catriona wished he could run back to his room and crawl under his blanket to have another panic attack. A part of him felt like he didn't really hate Livius. He had, after all, admitted to himself that he liked his quick wit and could maybe even work with him one day... He just didn't expect that day to come so soon. The pressure on him was mounting and he didn't know how to handle it. He thought about the things he had done with Stillang, the feelings and trust he had somehow developed for the man (was he really that charming or was there just something wrong with Catriona). The last thing he wanted to do was spend time with someone he viewed as a threat.

"I...I..." Catriona wiped away tears from his eyes that he didn't even realize were there. What the hell was wrong with him? "Excuse me," he whispered as he turned away from the men and worked to control himself. In this moment he was hit with another unfamiliar emotion: shame. When had he ever felt shame? In reality he didn't have a word for that feeling, all he knew was that he hated it and he wanted to get control of himself. He wanted to show Stillang that he could be a goddamn adult and not the child every cobalt here saw him as.

"I'm sorry," he said once he turned around and wiped away the last of his tears. His hesitation would have been apparent to anyone, but he eventually nodded his head. "I trust your decision, Lord Stillang." Part of him wanted to scream and throw the chair he was sitting in right in Livius' face, but the other part, the part that so desperately wanted Stillang's respect, knew he had to sit still and deal with whatever came his way. It was far more than what Catriona's father got out of him. A little piece of Catriona was pleased to know that Stillang had earned the young heir's respect without even trying while Ares worked for literally his son's entire life only to earn nothing.

"Okay." Catriona ran his fingers through his ponytail, most likely his new nervous tick since dropping quicksilver wherever he walked was unacceptable. "So when do we start?"

Stillang and Livius watch the mercury's reaction without comment. Once the other has composed himself, the cobalt leader speaks gently. "I do not have the time to teach you the intricacies of adult interactions within the cobalt clan. It would also further accentuate the power differential between us, to the point that it might damage our relationship. That is not a risk I wish to take." He pauses for a moment as if gathering his thoughts.

After a bit he continues. "As for Altria, she is also too busy to dedicate the time needed to educate you properly. So you'll get some from her, but only when she is free between meals and you're with her. The majority of it will be with Livius. Depending on how long it takes you catch on it shouldn't be more than a few days \. Less if you're exceptionally quick and eager." His lips twitch slightly as he imagines the other will be all too eager to wrap up his lessons so as to get away from Livius.

The pretty cobalt gently clears his throat and gives a weak glare at Stillang for the poorly hidden grin, though he is also amused, before turning to the mercury. "To be quite honest, I doubt you'll need much instruction. It is not as though I need to teach you etiquette and protocol after all." He rolls a shoulder slightly. "At most it will be a few hours over a couple days to teach you our clan's specifics regarding relationships and expectations between the different types of relationships."

Looking over Catriona, Livius hums softly in thought to himself. "We'll start today after lunch. I imagine this is a lot for you to take in and I want you focused and ready to learn. I'm sure you'll have plenty of questions as well."

Stillang smothers another laugh and clears his throat to get everyone's attention. "Now that that's all settled, I think we can say that this concludes things. Unless there's something else you wished to discuss with me?" He asks focusing on the mercury while the other cobalt gets up and leaves with a bow.

Oh, there was so much more that Catriona wanted to talk about with Stillang. He had so many questions he wanted to ask and he was desperate to hear all of the answers. That would have to wait, though. After a few moments Catriona finally shook his head and stood. "I suppose any questions I have will have to go to Livius. If there's something urgent I need to speak with you about I'll seek you out. Aside from that, I'm sorry for wasting your time." With that, Catriona bowed and left Stillang on his own.

Some hours passed with Tam introducing Catriona to his friends. The children had heard of Catriona's ability to create little animals so he kept them entertained by making all sorts of creatures. It was a nice change of pace from the drama of last night and shock of learning Livius will be his tutor. Eventually it was time for lunch, and Tam and Catriona made their way to the kitchen. Dare Catriona say he found comfort being behind the scenes and even enjoyed it? Not that he'd ever tell anyone that, but it was a comfort to know that Altria now welcomed him and was willing to help him.

Harmful gossip wasn't really a thing that happened in the kitchen, but everyone was always chatting with one another about some piece of news or someone's problem. Catriona inserted his own story, telling the servers and Altria that Livius was now one of his instructors. The servers all howled with laughter and strangely enough Catriona found himself slowly laughing at himself. This laughter was different than someone mocking him. He didn't have the words for it. The servers clapped him on his back, wished him luck, told him how they placed bets on who would come out victorious on the day Catriona picked a fight with Livius, and so many other things. All the while they laughed together, and Catriona felt more at home than he ever felt in the Mercury kingdom.

"Hey, man. Listen, an apology and a compliment go a long way. It'll make your life easier if Livius sees that you regret insulting him. I mean, you still gotta be sincere you know. You can't just apologize because you want to make these lessons go by easier, but try it."

"But you can't be mad if he doesn't accept your apology. Bet that's a lesson you haven't learned. Just because you apologize doesn't mean the other person has to forgive you. Still, it's a worth a shot. And Livius is probably someone you want to get along with."

Catriona listened to the advice the servers and cooks gave him as they worked diligently to prepare lunch. They had no reason to help him out at all, yet here they were. Was this what it was like to feel part of something? Catriona smiled at them and took their advice to heart. Whether or not he would do it was another thing all together. He needed to think about whether or not he actually wanted to apologize. Just in case he wanted to Altria tasked him with serving Livius his meal while Tam had the exciting job of serving Stillang.

Once everyone was seated the servers got to work. Tam happily placed Stillang's plate in front of him with Altria close behind just to make sure he didn't mess it up. As Catriona walked towards Livius he thought about how their "relationship" started. How he ruined something that might have been a friendship. How he caused Stillang so much trouble. It was second nature to simply act aggressive toward something he viewed as threat. Maybe he not only needed to change this tactic, but maybe he also needed to learn when something was a threat and when something could be an ally.

"Here is your food," Catriona said as he placed the plate in front of Livius. Before he left he leaned over to whisper in Livius' ear. "I've been told that just because an apology is made doesn't mean forgiveness will be granted. Even so, I offer one anyway. I’m sorry for my behavior towards you. I can't deny my," he paused to search for the proper word, "irritation at what you have with Stillang, but I also can't deny that I don't fully understand what you two have, nor what I'm feeling. I look forward to your guidance." Catriona bowed his head and started to depart before Livius could respond, though he quickly bent back down to add one more thing. "Also, you look good in red," he said, nodding to the other man's garment. "It's my favorite color and you wear it well." This time Catriona left for good, again not wanting to give Livius a chance to respond. He could hear all about it later. Right now, all he wanted to do was step away and catch his breath.

As he walked back to the kitchen, he picked up Tam and squeezed him in a hug just to comfort himself. While Tam rambled about how he was so happy to serve his lord Catriona wondered if Stillang had heard him speak to Livius. He thought he spoke quietly enough, but it was impossible to know what Stillang did or didn't know. Either way, he couldn't express the relief he felt when he got back to the kitchen. Away from the eyes and ears of the diners...

His new kitchen family seemed proud of him. They congratulated him by saying things such as "oh see, you're not a total bitch," or "you're a fast learner! I bet a lot less people want to throw you in the deep end of the river now!" and thankfully a few said things more along the lines of "This isn't easy and you may find later that you actually do hate Livius, but at least get to know him first. This is a good start." This type of encouragement helped settle Catriona's anxiety and kept him relaxed all the way until it was finally time to meet with Livius. He waited for him outside of the dining hall, and once he saw him all of his anxiety and nerves returned. Unfortunately for him there was no turning back now.

To say that lunch provided Stillang and Livius with a few questions would be putting it mildly. The lord is more or less pleased at the changes he's seen, but still wary as to how permanent or authentic they are. Livius finds the change interesting and amusing, though taps a finger in thought as the other murmurs to him then rushes off.

"I think he's getting close to a crossroads." Livius states after the mercury rushes off. At the other's raised eyebrow, the cobalt gives a rolling shrug with one shoulder. "He is changing fundamentally and everything he's ever known and believed is being challenged. There will come a point to where those two sides clash and one will win." Eyes narrowed slightly, the cobalt looks at where Catriona and slipped back off into the kitchen. "It's possible he's started it already, and the nature of mercury is allowing for a more fluid or easy transition, but I would keep an eye on him if I were you." He cautions his lord.

Stillang hums faintly as he gives a slow nod. "I shall keep your words in mind. Though I had similar thoughts myself. The changes we've seen have been nothing short of miraculous, especially within such a short time, however, such swift and drastic change isn't easy." Taking a sip of his drink he continues. "I think the real test will be in six months when he goes back to his clan."

Livius says nothing but gives a nod of agreement. The meal concluded with little else said of importance. Stillang goes off to take care of a few matters while Livius goes to waiting mercury.

"Now then, follow me." He says simply and leads the way to a sitting room. Once settled he has a servant go get them some tea and light snacks in case the other is hungry, or their first session goes long. "To start with, I shall say I accept your apology. Though in the future it would be best to keep apologies simple to avoid looking like you are trying to brown nose or undercut your apology with what could be construed as false or over-the-top flattery. Either of the latter would lead the recipient of your apology to think you were being less than sincere." He gives the other a poignant look before waving a hand. "Fortunately for you I know better and am no so easily offended.

After the servant arrives with their refreshments and pours the first cup, they leave the two alone once more. Lifting up his own cup to lightly blow on the hot liquid, the cobalt looks at the other. "Now then, tell me what you know of the cobalt clan workings. Or, perhaps, what you know of either Lord Stillang and relationships as to how they pertain in relation to him."

This question isn't designed to mock or belittle the mercury by making a show of how ignorant he is, but to let Livius know what to teach and where it would be best to start. There would be little point in going over things that the other already knows after all. That would merely be a waste of both of their time.

If Catriona's heart beat any faster it would burst right out of his chest. The thought of it frightened him; not for his own well-being. The silver mess it would make on Stillang's floor would be a nightmare to clean, and somehow he felt that even in death he'd not forgive himself for causing trouble to more cobalts whether they be lords or the cleaning staff. Better to try and stay his pounding heart. Normally Catriona didn't get this nervous. His time here had truly thrown all sorts of emotions and feelings at him. Why he was nervous around Livius was especially upsetting to him. In record time he had gone from laughing at the man to trailing behind him like a puppy, anxious as to what he would say and act towards him.

Catriona thought he would calm down once he was seated, but as soon as Livius opened his mouth he felt himself jump. When did he become this easy to startle? Or was it just because he was in front of Livius? He tilted his head at the other's words. "Sincerity seems to be an issue for me, doesn't it?" he said quietly. "Tam thinks I'm genuine. Oh, the kitchen staff trusts me now. I think anyway. I guess their kindness doesn't necessarily translate to trust. The guards who watch me each day... They don't trust me." He shrugged, not really concerned with anyone outside of the man in front of him. "I'll take your advice to heart."

The next question, however, threw Catriona for a loop. Not that it should have. He knew this was exactly what he brought here to talk about, but Livius' direct question made him realize just how little he knew. He bit his bottom lip, ignoring his tea mostly so he wouldn't show just how much he was shaking. "Umm..." He started, racking his brain for something, anything at all to tell Livius. "I know that..." Surely, there had to be something. Anything. What has he learned? What has he seen that stood out to him? Has anything caught his attention about how people interact with Stillang and how he interacts with them?

"Children..." he started, already feeling like his answer was stupid. Livius must think he's a total idiot. It didn't help that he spoke each word slowly, as if he were unsure himself if this answer was even an answer. "Are looked after by everyone, including Lord Stillang. He helps nurture them as I have seen him do with Tam. And... Ummm..." Catriona didn't try to hide the fact that he couldn't look Livius directly in the eye. While he normally loved his trick of making people think he was looking at them, his own embarrassment kept him from from even facing Livius. He looked towards the door or the arm of his chair, sometimes the wall. Anything that wasn't Livius.

"His servants and guards... Umm..."

Nothing.

Catriona trailed off into nothing. Why couldn't he just hide in his room right now?

"I don't know," he finally admitted in a soft whisper. "I don't know anything about this." What a difficult thing for him to say. He wanted to cry, though he kept it in rather than let Livius see him lose his composure twice in one day. He had cried more on this visit than he had in the past however many years; he simply couldn't remember the last time it had happened. The cobalts had done of a good job of breaking him down, whether on purpose or not, but they had also done an excellent job of building him back up. He hoped Livius would continue the trend.

Livius watches the mercury attempt to scramble together any information in order to provide the cobalt with an answer. "So essentially you know nothing." He states simply, and there is no judgement from the older male. Setting his cup down he decides to address the one bit Catriona had managed to touch on.

"Yes, children are looked after by everyone. It takes a village and all that... However, the main reason for our leader to interact with the young is primarily to identify potentials." Setting his cup down, Livius folds his hands on the table in front of him while continuing to look at the mercury. "The leader identifies, along with others as they can't be the only one with them all the time, aptitudes or skills the upcoming generations have in order to help guide and grow those traits. Tam, for instance, is very personable, attentive, and patient. This means he will likely grow to be someone who would excel as a teacher or diplomat so he will be put in situations or around people to help see which way he may ultimately decide to go."

The cobalt raises an eyebrow. "I think you are a prime example of how well he'd do as a diplomat to other clans." Continuing on before the other can respond, asks. "So in light of this it stands to reason that his relationship with children is both as a guide and a protector, what else do you think the clan leader's duties and responsibilities are?"

There are, of course, many different things that a leader is responsible for. Though perhaps, the cobalt reflects, how leadership is done within the mercury clan may be vastly different from how the cobalts do things. The drastic culture change that Catriona has been going through is evidence enough of that, but Livius is hoping that the core concepts are the same.

Finally, here was something Catriona knew. Perspectives on leadership couldn't alter too much between the two clans. Yes, the atmosphere in the Cobalt kingdom was completely different than the typically oppressive air of the Mercury kingdom, but ultimately leaders were leaders. There were only so many ways someone could lead a group of people, and Catriona was confident he knew exactly how it needed to be done.

"Oh well, a leader's job is to keep his kingdom safe. He has to make sure there are no opportunities for his enemies to dismantle everything he's worked to build. By any means necessary." Catriona nodded as he repeated his clan's motto. A sigh of a relief came from him after those words left his mouth. It settled his nerves to be reacquainted with something he was so familiar with, even if it was just an concept. "If he can't do that, then he's no leader. A leader must be strong and intelligent and merciless. In fact my father got angry at my younger brother once for saving me. My older brother, I suppose he thought Father and Mother saw me as stronger than him (he was wrong), so he tried to drown me, but my little brother rescued me. My father was so mad." Catriona laughed at the memory, as if he was recalling a fun, playful outing with his siblings. "He drilled it into my younger brother, and the rest of us actually, that we don't show mercy. Especially to the weak. I suppose him saving me allowed me to become the next in line. See, my two brothers wound up killing one another. I suppose it couldn't have gone any other way." He shook his head at the pure silliness of their actions. "Well, anyway that's not important. Strength! Leaders are strong. My Father doesn't like my war tactics because he doesn't see them as powerful. I prefer stealth and he prefers strength so he sees me as weak. Which goes back to what leaders do--they make sure they surround themselves with others who are strong to keep up the defense of the kingdom. I can't blame him for feeling the way he does about me."

Catriona spoke casually, happy that he finally could show Livius that he knew something other than how to just insult people. "Leaders also hold the responsibility of the clan's welfare. If he can't keep everyone happy and healthy," Catriona shrugged his shoulders, "the people can overthrow him if they're powerful enough to do so. Lord Stillang seems well liked among his people so I don't think this would be a problem for him. My grandfather was almost kicked from the throne, but his followers managed to fight back against the rebels. My father--or rather my mother in this case--does a good job of making sure the people have what they need."

Catriona crossed one leg over the other and leaned back in his chair. God, that was satisfying. Finally, he didn't have to feel embarrassed or like he knew less than everyone else in the room. He was on an equal playing field now and he was sure Livius would be pleased with his answers. They could move onto whatever else they were supposed to talk about now. "I suppose at the end of the day it's all about doing what needs to be done to keep the kingdom standing. By any means necessary."

Livius just stares at the mercury for several long moments. Finally, blinking slowly, the cobalt shakes his head and drains his cup then refilling it before speaking. "I see. Well, I suppose there are some similarities between cobalts and mercuries but it's fair to say we have our differences as well." He pauses to look at the other once more before continuing, shaking his head slightly.

"Yes, a leader must be intelligent. A stupid one wouldn't last long as either the clan would fall apart or they'd be killed. However, strength is relative. Most, and I assume you as well, think of physical ability when discussing strength. Physical prowess is good, yes, but as you yourself have stated, there are types of strength other than brute force. Strength of mind, will, and skill are other areas." Livius takes a sip before continuing on. "I think most clans follow the principle of a leader only does so while he has followers. However, not all follow the principle of 'any means necessary' and we most certainly do not."

His tone if firm while holding the other's gaze. "Lord Stillang in particular does whatever he must to ensure his clan is safe and prospering, even if it means sacrificing his pride or having to bend to another's will on occasion. He is willing to sacrifice his own needs and wants in order to put the clan first, even though it is not asked of him to do so." The cobalt gives a small fleeting smile. "Though that is, in part, of what makes us all so willing to follow him and to make sacrifices of our own."

The smile goes away as he refocuses on Catriona. "You touched on another aspect of a leader, however, that I don't think you have thought about. Duty to the clan by producing heirs." Pining the other with his gaze, Livius lets that comment sink in and take hold. "While not necessarily the case with all clans, or ours, most follow bloodlines as a means of succession between leaders. Even though Lord Stillang prefers men, there will come a time when either he will have to produce an heir with a female or designate an heir."

Pushing back some stray hair, he continues. "This is another reason for the leader to meet with others in the clan and interact with the children. It allows him to identify potential heirs should he not produce one of his blood. Though it is possible he might find a male from another clan who can provide him with an heir. Chances are high that it will be a female or designated heir though." The cobalt taps the side of cup absently while still looking at the other.

"That leads to the key point of our time together. The purpose and responsibility of those certain relationships with the leader. For most it is simple and straightforward. If you are the head of house, you manage the daily household agenda and staff. The secretary his schedule, master of arms the army, and so on and so forth. Things really only become tricky when you look at the intimate relationships as, depending on the nature of it, there are duties and responsibilities you hold to the clan as well as the leader."

Strength of mind, will, and skill. Catriona knew what that meant, but it was nothing the Mercury clan focused on much. Catriona himself worked to improve his stealth skills, his skills controlling his quicksilver, and occasionally his skills in seduction, but it was nothing he spoke about with other warriors or his parents. He was curious to learn more, but continued to listen rather than interrupt Livius.

Only when an opening was granted did he ask about something that caught his interest. "What kinds of things would Lord Stillang sacrifice?" Catriona asked. "Why not just fight or kill your enemies who want to disrupt the clan?" It didn't make sense to him that Stillang would sacrifice anything to defend his clan when he could very well just attack whoever was threatening it. Catriona hadn't had the pleasure of seeing Stillang fight, but he had a feeling the man was well trained in the art of battle. Sacrifice shouldn't be required if the threat could be neutralized with force. Cobalts were indeed an odd sort.

The next half of the conversation brought back the young mercury's anxiety. Heirs were not on the forefront of his mind; Livius was correct about that. With his brothers out of the picture he was guaranteed the throne once Ares died. Not that Ares was happy about that. In fact, Catriona was sure sending him to stay in the Cobalt kingdom was just a ploy for Ares to somehow work around his son obtaining the throne. Not that it mattered to Catriona; once he returned he'd take his revenge on the man and force his way into power. Though this was something to think about another time.

Catriona was silent for a bit after Livius stopped speaking. This was the part he had been so concerned about. Intimacy wasn't exactly a thing for him. He knew some basics. He knew that many, many people found him attractive and he could use his looks to get what he wanted or to kill who he wanted. He knew what those people wanted from him, but they would never get that far. Stillang was the only one who ever got him on his back and he wasn't anything like the men and women Catriona dealt with. Aside from that, Catriona had no love interest back in his kingdom and he spent no time searching for one. Love and intimacy and romance did nothing for him.

So then why couldn't he control his feelings about Stillang?

"Your relationship with Lord Stillang..." Catriona started, keeping his eyes on his hands as he picked at his nails. "I don't understand it. He does those things with you, but yesterday he also..." A deep sigh escaped Catriona as he tried to think of the right words. "He was with me too. Not in the same way, but... Similar. I don't know. How can he just hop back and forth between us like that? Doesn't it hurt you?"

He knew it didn't hurt Livius one bit, but for the life of him he couldn't understand why. "I don't even know why I'm feeling this way towards him. No, even worse, I don't understand what I'm feeling for him." The more he spoke the less Catriona was speaking to Livius. He spun his own thoughts around in his head, trying to get control of them only for them to continuously confuse him. "It started at the lake. He took care of me. He made sure I wasn't scared and that Tam didn't push me too hard. I guess I felt safe, but that doesn't explain these feelings. They're heavy and strange and as soon as i think I understand them they just... Hurt me. Do you feel this way for him? Do you know what's going on with me?" Catriona finally looked back up at Livius. He hadn't realized that during his rambling he had pressed his hand to his heart, rubbing the area as if it were tender and bruised.

During his rant he failed to really focus on what Livius had said. The young heir cleared his throat and tried to compose himself yet again. "What does your relationship with Livius entail? What does it do for him and the clan? And, perhaps you might know, how will things change if I start a relationship with him like that? Will people look at me differently?"

At the other's first question, Livius shakes his head slightly. "Perhaps that is a mercury perspective but not a cobalt one. Or one of any of us who are a transitional. We have far too many who would just as gladly make use of us as turn on us if they felt they had due cause. Sometimes the cost of fighting and killing is just too high." He says softly.

As the mercury moves on and begins to talk out his thoughts, the cobalt gives a soft, almost wistful, smile. "I think, perhaps, that what we do and what you do are immensely different. If for no other reason than the meaning and feelings involved." He can tell the younger male is falling, and hard, for the cobalt leader. It is adorable really.

"The reason he can 'hop between us', as you put it, is that the intentions are different. Even if they weren't, there are adults who have multiple or brief sexual partners with no commitment between them. It is all about achieving mutual pleasure, with no strings or attachments." Livius looks up, head tilting side-to-side a few times in thought. "With myself, however, I hold no feelings about him seeing others as we are more of companions of convenience. I respect him, like him even, but hold no romantic thoughts or expectations as to what our encounters mean."

The cobalt is straightforward and nearly blunt in his explanation. "So no, I don't feel that way about him. I enjoy our trysts immensely, but it is purely physical between us. For you, it seems as if there's more emotion involved." He pauses while considering the final questions posed by the mercury. "My relationship with Lord Stillang entails mostly what I have already told you. It also provides him with a way to subtly keep others away from him. All except the most determined suitors that is, and provides the clan with a leader that seems to be happy and productive."

"Now you, it would depend on the type of relationship you want with him. If, like me, you just want to enjoy physical pleasure with him and be able to be subtly public with him then there would be no change for you." Livius drawls slowly. "If you want more, then it depends on how much more you want. The closer and more, for lack of a better word, official you are, then the more that will be expected of you and that could impact how the clan interacts with you."

Livius tilts his head to the side. "So the question is, what do you want to be to him?"

Mutual pleasure. No strings of attachment. Companions of convenience. Catriona heard everything Livius said, but none of it made sense to him. Why would someone want multiple people when one was enough? Or was one enough. He couldn't admit to having experienced the pleasures of sex so maybe it was better to have as many partners as one could manage. Maybe it wasn't all that great of an experience then? No, that couldn't be it. Stillang made Catriona lose his mind the other day and he barely touched him. His whispers alone were enough to send the young heir spiraling, and Catriona would be lying if he said he didn't enjoy every moment.

"So you're not... You don't... You're not interested in him romantically? Really? Not at all?" That was a shock. Stillang was as close to perfect as one could get in Catriona's eyes and, loathe as he was to admit, Livius was pretty, smart, and apparently talented in several ways. Why did the two not commit? Perhaps, aside from these feelings they seemed to lack for one another, it didn't benefit them to do so. "I mean... Are you guys even friends then? It can't just be as simple as you two just need each other physically." Catriona blinked a few times at Livius before casting his eyes up in thought. "Am I overthinking this? Is it really just that? Nothing else? Just companions of convenience...."

Catriona focused back on Livius when the conversation was turned more towards him. How could he answer that question? Catriona was nearly dizzy from how confused he was. He couldn't understand Livius' reasoning and his relationship with Stillang, nor could he understand his own emotions for the stunning cobalt. What he wanted from Stillang was his respect and perhaps another kiss and maybe another touch here and there and perhaps a lot more than anyone knew. A whine escaped the young man as he tried his hardest to figure out what type of relationship he wanted between him and Stillang.

"So..." Catriona started, scooting to the edge of his seat and propping his elbows on his knees. "Let's just say, hypothetically, that I want him to have me and only me. Now, this is hypothetical it's not like I actually want this or anything so don't think that." Catriona knew he couldn't fool Livius, but he could try. "But, just so I have all the information, how would that change things between me and him? And between me and the other clan members? And, more importantly, do you... How do I ask this?" He rubbed his face with his hands while trying to keep his heart from exploding out of his chest. "Do you think that he would even want that with me? To be with me and only me?"

Catriona may have asked even more questions, bombarding the poor man in front of him with everything that was running through his head. He stopped short, however, when a quick, depressing thought managed to scream above everything else. He sat back in his chair, wrapping his arms around his stomach. "I'll be gone in six months anyway, won't I? Do you really think this will all matter to Stillang? Why should he waste his time with how I feel when I'll be gone soon?" Catriona clicked his tongue; somehow it was getting easier and easier to open up to Livius. "This all feels so terrible, Livius. What should I do?"

The cobalt's eyebrow slowly continues to rise during Catriona's initial rambling. When the other finally trails off, he cuts in with a dry drawl. "It can, and is, that simple little mercury. Sometimes people want to have messy amazing sex without any messy attachments." Honestly, what was the other taught growing up? Surely no one is this clueless about life.

At the proposed "hypothetical" presented to him, Livius gives the mercury a flat stare for several, very long, moments. Getting up he goes over and calls for servant. "I need alcohol. Strong alcohol. Bring me one of Lord Stillang's stock and if he grumbles tell him to talk to me." Sitting back down he stares at the other, tapping a finger on the table, without saying a word.

It is not until the drink arrives and he has taken a couple of shots that he finally speaks. "Right. So, on to your 'hypothetical' situation." Livius states flatly, clearly not buying it for one moment. "To answer your question, that still leaves need to clarify. You could, for example, become his official consort. That means you two are a pair, but while your have an official position in court, he could still get married and that person would rank above you. He would then be able to have both of you, and you could not have anyone else."

There is, of course, a lot more to the position than that but it is the part that the mercury is focused on. "In that position you would have him to yourself until he began to court someone to wed. Regardless of if, or when, he would marry you would have obligation and your own duties to help support the clan and him." He waves a hand as if dismissing the whole thing. "I'm sure that's not what you're after however, so moving on."

Taking another shot, then pouring another drink that he takes a sip of this time, he continues. "Next would be to approach him and make an official courting request. Should he accept, then the two of you will be begin courting with the intention with the intention being to either marry or part ways. Regardless of the eventual outcome, the two of you would only be allowed to engage with one another. The clan would then begin to test you in small ways as they may one day be welcoming you as their own. So you would get some deference, but they would also come to you with requests."

Chuckling the cobalt takes another sip. "Still, I'm sure all that really matters to such a young thing like yourself is the fact that all of Lord Stillang's focus and... affection would be on you only." Lifting his cup, he takes a sip while smiling.

At the mention of the six months, Livius can't hold it back anymore. He gives the young mercury an eyeroll that speaks volumes. "Powers that be, spare me the idiocy and ignorance of the upcoming generation!" He extols. Spearing the other with a narrow eyed gaze, he jabs the hand holding his drink at Catriona. "Do you really think that if he were willing to invest that kind of time and energy on you that that would be an issue?" Scoffing, he leans back without breaking eye contact. "In particular, if you're courting you would still be bound to one another despite being in different areas. You would visit one another, and eventually one of you would move to live with the other."

At the final question, the cobalt shrugs. "I can't answer that for you. Ultimately it depends on what you want and how badly you want it. So, in turn it is not what do you do, but how badly do you want it?"

Oh the poor thing.

Catriona covered his mouth to stifle a laugh as Livius signaled for alcohol to continue this conversation. Even worse when the man finally lost his patience with the mercury. It reminded Catriona of when he pushed his father just a bit too far. Of course, Livius was far more elegant and poised; there was no comparison between the two. Even so, Catriona felt a bit of his old Mercurial self return as delight rose in him at Livius' irritation.

Then again, perhaps it wasn't delight at Livius' annoyance. Maybe Catriona was more amused at himself then anything. He didn't necessarily feel he was that ignorant, but he supposed he did sound like a complete idiot to someone who knew the ins and outs of these types of situations. He'd laugh at someone in his position. More than that, he probably would have lost his patience with whatever youngblood was in front of him far earlier than Livius had. Well, regardless of the reason for Catriona's small increase in joy he would take it and not burden Livius anymore.

"I'll think about the answer to that question, Livius." Catriona bowed and said nothing else on the subject. He knew it wasn't really his decision to end their conversation. If Livius wanted to continue then the mercury couldn't exactly fight him on it, but he had a feeling the older man wanted out. "Perhaps that's enough for today. You've given me a lot to think about, and I'm sure you need to report back to Lord Stillang. Tam is probably waiting for me with some entertaining activity as it is. The guards will walk me to him. And perhaps id I'm lucky I'll get to see Lord Stillang tonight to talk with him some."

Catriona stood and prepared himself to leave, though stopped himself with a grin towards Livius. "Have you heard the joke about mercuries? I know many clans say it and it always gets on my father's nerves. Mercury is strongest in its liquid and gaseous forms, and it's quite unstable and fragile in it's solid form. People then say it makes sense that members of my clan are so... Unpredictable. We are, after all, solid mercury." Catriona giggled to himself as he left Livius to find Tam. Laughing at himself was something completely new to him. Never once had he thought that joke was funny, but sitting here with Livius made him feel like it was all too appropriate. Maybe the kitchen staff really did teach him a little about making fun of himself every now and then.

While Catriona had been chatting with Livius a servant was busy delivering a message to Stillang. He knocked on the office door and once invited in handed Stillang a letter tied to an ornate wooden box. The lid was embossed with intricate vines and mercurial symbology, parts of it painted with bright quicksilver. A gold latch kept it shut, and if one looked under the box they would see Catriona's name delicately carved into the wood.

"A message from Lord Ares," the servant said, handing the letter and box to Stillang. "Do you think perhaps he's asking for his child back? Or worse, asking us to keep him?" The servant laughed to himself as he bowed and left Stillang. The letter itself was nothing incredibly special. Ares acknowledged how his letter had come rather quickly after Catriona left the Mercury kingdom, but he wanted to express his thanks and gratitude for Stillang taking on the task of dealing with the young heir. The box was filled with jewels and gems as an extra thanks for Stillang's trouble. Of course, the box belonged to Catriona. It was his personal jewelry box, but Ares thought the young man owed some payment to the cobalt leader as well. The rest of the letter was mostly complaining about Catriona, how spoiled he was and how unfit he was to be a leader. Ares always knew he would be the failure of the family. Even his name was a disappointment--Catriona was a common Mercurial female name meaning "pure." The wife was the one who chose it and Ares knew Catriona would never amount to much of anything. Eventually the complaining ended and the letter concluded with another thanks to Stillang for taking on this burden.

At least he seemed grateful.

Livius nods and waves a hand. "Yes, you do that and we'll discuss things more tomorrow." He comments dryly letting the other go. Leaning back with sigh once the door closes behind the mercury, the cobalt slowly finishes his glass then gathers everything up. The younger male had one thing correct, he does need to go talk with Stillang. Better forewarn that he might have someone interested in more than casual sexual bouts coming his way.

As the cobalt was on his way, armed with alcohol, to see the cobalt leader who was looking at the message from Ares. The moment the mercury clan leader began to complain about his son Stillang skipped further down to look for anything worth reading. Upon finishing reading the letter, the hand holding the piece of paper rests on his desk while his other hand goes up to massage the bridge of his nose.

Honestly, these two are going to drive him into an early grave with their feud. Letting out a long sigh through his nose, he straightens up and looks at the jewelry box. While the extra funds would be beneficial, the leader is not going to accept a 'gift' given without consent or knowledge from the owner.

While thinking of what to do with the box and its contents, Livius arrives. Without waiting for permission the cobalt settles into a chair and raises an eyebrow when he sees the box. "A gift from an admirer?" He teases the lord with a grin after setting his things on the desk beside it, which widens when Stillang snorts. The cobalt leader snags the bottle and pours himself a drink in the glass.

"Something like that." The leader mutters before emptying the cup. "So, how did your first lesson go?" He asks, grinning when the other shakes his head. "Well, It can't have been all bad. You're not ranting or glaring at me."

"He's not a bad child, under it all, but a more clueless one I've yet to meet. Granted," Livius waves a hand. "it could be cultural differences and the mercuries do things differently. Who knows with them?" The two share a few more drinks before the cobalts part ways.

Stillang calls for a servant. "Let Catriona know that I want to see him after dinner. Also," His eyes harden slightly, and the leader's skin shifts showing his irritation. "I will hear no more jokes about how horrible it would be if we had him stay here longer. Yes his manners and start here were hard on everyone, but he is making progress and I won't have it undone." The servant swallows hard and nods. "Good. Everyone can still respond as they see fit to requests or behaviors, but no unprovoked antagonism or bullying. Make sure that's clear."

With that done the cobalt leader locks away the box and its contents then continues with his day. Soon it is time for dinner and the mercury is once more invited to the table to join the meal.

Little did the Cobalts know that during his time here Catriona had built himself an army. He grinned as he looked at his fighters, knowing that with little persuasion he could get them to help him with anything he needed. Within reason anyway. Tam and his friends were still loyal to Stillang first and foremost, but at this point Catriona took what he could get. After all, these children were helping him out in more ways than he imagined they would. He knew they liked him because he could entertain them with his mercury, but he had no idea that all of these little ones, at least five, wanted to be his friend. They were even jealous of Tam for getting to spend so much alone time with the guest.

If Catriona used their adoration of him for his own purposes did that make him a bad person?

"I need clothes," he told them, sitting down with them in a circle. "I'm to eat with Lord Stillang again and I can't wear what I wore last time. That's unacceptable. But I don't have anything else that's nice."

Catriona had never seen a more effective group of children. Perhaps Tam and his friends really were the future makers that Livius was talking about. In record time the children borrowed clothes from their brothers, cousins, fathers, and even sisters to help Catriona find his dinner attire. After looking at all of the clothes brought to him and discussing with a little boy who was obviously the next Livius in the making, Catriona settled on a black sleeveless tunic (that Catriona argued was a dress against Little Livius who simply wasn't having his nonsense), white pants with a slit up to the knee, and simple black flats. The outfit was horrendously boring for him, but the children all agreed it looked great. Well, if anyone commented on it then Catriona would simply blame the kids.

The look was completed with a high ponytail and Catriona made his way dinner, albeit a few minutes late. "I apologize for my late arrival, Lord Stillang." He bowed to the leader before taking a seat across from him as the one next to him was already occupied. "Did you have a good day today, Lord Stillang? Busy?" Catriona rested his cheek in his palm as he spoke to Stillang, not realizing just how much of a dreamy look he was giving him. Funnily enough, he truly did care about what kind of day Stillang had. Normally that was such a throwaway question, but Catriona was dying to hear the answer. "I get the feeling you rarely get breaks. Perhaps you and I should go to the lake again tomorrow?" Nevermind that Catriona was suddenly aware that he invited Stillang out to his literal worst nightmare, but was that a bold thing to ask in front of all these people? The thought only hit Catriona after he asked so there was no point in worrying about it now. "Maybe you can show me how you swim? Obviously I can't copy, but you can explain the technique to me." Maybe he'd even get a chance to listen to that wonderful music that his hair so liked to create.

The dinner continued on much the same way, save for the annoying man next to Catriona who so clearly wanted his attention. The mercury played nice mostly because he didn't want Stillang to lose any pride in him he might have gathered. It wasn't as if the man was rude. He was simply... Touchy. He obviously saw Catriona how most people saw him--a pretty little thing--and couldn't keep his hands from running up the mercury's bare arms or touching his back, timing it perfectly so it seemed nothing more than a friendly touch accompanying a laugh or joke. There was no only so much Catriona could take, and he figured the least he could do without getting in trouble was ask the man to stop.

"Please, I don't really like being touched. If you don't mind I'd prefer--"

"Oh nonsense!" The man cried happily, grabbing the young man's hand in his own. "It's simply--"

The man interrupted himself with a shout as quicksilver spread onto his hand, arm, and food. "I asked nicely," Catriona hissed. This would be the point where he would usually get up and storm away, but he stayed put if only because Stillang was right in front of him. Catriona gave him a look that begged for his help before he lost control and fed this bothersome man a decent helping of liquid mercury.
