Name: Shu Kogami

Age: 19

Ability: Fire affinity

Birthday: June 22nd

Occupation: Full-Time Student

Position: Seke

**Shu has a past and present with suicidal behavior, please do not read forward if this is a trigger for you.

Thank you**

Bio:Shu knew he was different from the moment he could walk. His parents never realized anything was wrong with him until he couldn’t keep his own secret anymore. When he was ten the first shadow of his abilities became apparent to him. He realized that he was able to touch flame without burning his fingers, something no human should be able to do. Shu never thought much of it and went on about his life, not thinking back on it. At age twelve the ability manifested itself in an entirely different way. An accident occurred during dinner with his parents, a small temper tantrum turned into a full on blaze and the house went up in smoke. After his abilities were brought to light, his parents ridiculed him and looked down upon him for his abilities. He was treated like a monster. Locked away in his home he was homeschooled, taken from his friends and social life. Every day was wracked with a new punishment for his existence and he began to hate himself. A year later was his parents first big snap. He lit a candle with his fingers but wasn’t able to control the flame and burned his sister on accident. Naturally, his parents combusted on him. His father took a knife to his left eye wanting to rip it from its socket as a punishment for the burn his sister would have on her arm forever. His sister saved him that night leaving him with a long scar down the left side of his cheek. (This is why his hair covers the left side of his cheek always). At the age sixteen his parents tried to end his life by shoving him in a bathtub, trying to drown him. Trying to sniff out the existence of their son who was an abomination. Shu remembers this day vividly. His mother took one wrist and cut it open as his father took the other hoping he would bleed to death in that tub, ending his life for good. Shu had never done anything but want to make his parents happy but when his sister called the police and he was rushed to the hospital he realized he hated them. He hated his father the most who beat him almost regularly, telling him he was the bastard son he never wanted. It was degrading and traumatizing for such a young boy to have to deal with. As he was recovering the cops were told that the cuts were from a suicide attempt and the entire incident was swept under the rug. No one ever knew what his parents had done to him. To this day, even as an adult he has a hard time going into bathrooms with tubs. After the incident with the bathroom and his parents so close to being caught they threw him out. He was only seventeen but had to become and adult and find himself a place to stay. This was when he enrolled at the university for the gifted. It wasn’t unlike younger children to join so his attendance was left unnoticed. He still sends his grades to his family hoping that one day they will realize that his ability is not a burden or a problem but a gift that he can do well with. He still struggles with hating himself and if he has an episode he will collapse on himself. He tries his hardest to always have a smile on his face even when he is falling apart inside. Shu always wants to make the best impression for his family even though they hate him; he wants to prove them wrong.

~~~
A soft breeze came in through the small crack of his window. A gentle birdcall brought with it reminding him that everything was still moving forward outside his little cell. Everything but him. It was like a sad reminder that he was locked away while his friends played in the beautiful summer morning. It was close to his birthday…another year spent celebrating alone. No one had made him a cake or even bought him a present since he was eleven. That was before the ability manifested. Before it ruined everything.
His sloped shoulders shook softly as a wave of emotion loomed over him as he sat at his desk. A single tear slid down his nose and onto the smooth textbook, the water droplet steamed as it left his body. Reminding him what he was, what they hated. He could hear them downstairs, arguing about what to do with him today. The boy always did something wrong, no matter if he didn’t leave his room once that day. They would always find something to punish him for. Sounded as if his father was in an exceptionally bad mood and was planning to make this punishment worse than the rest.
He felt his heart speed up as the pounding of footsteps made their way up to his locked bedroom door. The boys blonde head turned, leveling his one good eye on the door waiting patiently for his father to burst into the room. His arms were dotted with scars of all shapes and sizes. Most from his parents and their various punishments. Usually his father only smacked him around a lot and left plenty of broken lips and bruised eyes, nothing too serious. Today…he could feel something off in the air. A flinch passed through his body as he heard the heavy lock from outside fall to the ground and the wooden door busted open revealing his father.
The burly man was breathing heavily as if he had just gotten done screaming about something not so important. His face beat red and that vein that stuck out on the side of his neck was throbbing as if saying hello to the boy. The little sixteen year old boy peered up at his father, noticing his mother not too far behind. Both of them looked disappointed and they scoffed at him with disgust.
Shu couldn’t remember what it was that set them off that day, and his dreams could never remember either. Maybe it was a look, a too heavy output of air, or maybe a simple brush of his hand on his hair. They were afraid of him, afraid of what he would do to his sister and their family if he had the opportunity. Fire was…wild and uncontrollable. He still couldn’t control it properly and he was almost twenty.
His father jumped toward him grabbing his arm and yanking him up from his desk. The cup that held his pencils fell to the floor spilling its contents all over the wood. The blonde boy felt a shiver run through his body and he pulled away hard, “Father?” He pleaded trying to understand why the man was being so rough with him.
“Shut up. Move your ass.” The man gruffly answered, anger still in his voice.
“Are you sure she won't tell?” His mother whispered grabbing his other arm. For a malnutrition boy, they were both too strong for him to fight back. Fear flashed through his eyes as he looked between his parents. Their hard hands dragging him by the arms through the hallways of their house to the bathroom. Throwing him against the bathtub. He felt his head hit the back of the wall leaving his eyes fuzzy and his stomach twisting. His hands sprawled along the outer rim of the white tub trying to pull himself out of the warm water only to find his fathers hand pushing him down.
It was downhill from there, their voices, their words were nonexistent. All Shu could feel was the cold. The hands held him down, pushed him against the bottom of the tub unrelenting to the need for air. He struggled, pushed and pulled forcing his head above water, gasping for air. They didn’t care as nameless hands pushed him back down. He swallowed large amounts of water having to spit it up each time he was allowed up. It was warm…his body remembered the warmth within the tub and it didn’t seem all that bad. They were counted, nameless voices were chanting numbers above the water and letting him up only every so often.
The numbers were meaningless until he felt the pinpricks against his skin. The burning hot pain of holes being poked into his skin letting the lifeblood he held so dear out into the water. The white tub became painted with red as their nameless hands cut, cut, cut his wrists. The woman cried while the man smiled, hoping this would be the end of his disgrace. Little wispy strands of red started to pollute the water. He gasped and struggled fighting against them, trying hard to fight for his life.
As the cold grips of death started to slide into his vision he looked up to his mother and realized she had stopped crying. How, how could someones parents do something so horrible. He screamed against them trying to use his ability trying to get away but the water weakened him. Made it impossible to fight. All the fight was gone anyway and he felt his body sink to the bottom of the tub once more as his father made a new cut.
~~~

Shu woke up screaming. His chest rising and falling in a fast precision. Sweat made his blonde hair cling to his cheeks as he tried to catch his breath. He looked around quickly trying to figure out where he was, what he was, and where his parents were. In a panic his fingers grabbed his wrists as if expecting to find oozing blood there but he only found the puckered scars from long ago. A sigh of relief left him as he seemed to relax just slightly. A hand brushed his forehead wiping the sweat from his brow.

Blue orbs found their way to the clock on the desk side table reading that it was close to 5 a.m. Of course, he couldn’t wake up anywhere close to when classes started. He shifted slightly in bed letting his legs fall over the edge, his feet grazing the bottom of the floor. His legs were dotted with cigarette scars, long lines, and gashes long since healed. Shu tried not to think about it as he got up and quickly put on a robe. Slender fingers grabbed a handle to his shower bag as he walked across the hall and into the communal bathrooms. It wasn’t unusual for him to come into the showers so early, he did rather hate showering with others.

He set his things down on the counter, peering at himself in the mirror. Shakey hands pulled back the hair that fell into his face revealing the ugly scar on his left eye. A heavy sigh left his lips as he traced it with a finger only to wince at the memory.

Trying to push the thoughts away he decided to go back to his original idea. Quickly he undressed, turned on the shower, and stepped in without much of a sound. He was a pretty silent guy apart for when he had an episode. He didn’t even like to talk that much other than to the authorities at the school. The water washed away the nightmare within moments and Shu felt like he could breathe again. His eyes closed as he stepped completely under the shower head, fully giving himself up to the weakness of his.

The only reason this bathroom didn’t give him the creeps was because there was no bathroom here. It was only walk-in showers and open concept walls, meaning he wouldn’t be drowned anytime soon. Still, he liked to keep his showers to a mere ten minutes at most. Before the daydreaming could get any worse he quickly finished up his routine in the shower before getting out. His slender body was wrapped with a towel before he made his way back to his room.

The university that he attended wasn’t just your typical university. It was for people like him, with abilities and powers that were either used for good or for bad. This was where children, or adults like himself were brought in hopes to better understand their powers. He figured it was more like a prison for the abilitied students, a way to keep an eye on them when they were using dangerous powers that could kill thousands.

Shu’s own power could wipe out a city if it was a dry enough time of the year. Fire affinities weren’t even the worst powers seen around campus so he could only imagine what his parents would have done had they met one of these students. School life was far from normal too. Instead of normal classes about math or English the students too courses on combat readiness and ability strengthening. All ways to make their abilities stronger and safer for society.

They didn’t have to wear uniforms and they weren’t like a high school. Shu was allowed to do mostly whatever he wanted outside of using his powers for bad. He quickly got dressed into his usual loose suit. Feeling dressing formally was better than being a slob. These long sleeved jackets also hid his scars from most eyes. He still had a few dotting his neck but no one really asked much about it and his hair was long enough to cover most of it.

After finishing getting dressed he decided to go for a walk. He had a favorite little place on campus that no one else really knew about. He had never been to watch the sunrise there so this would be a good opportunity for that. Unconsciously his feet guided him to his small little garden on the east side of campus, hidden amongst the columns and trees out there. It was a meadow like area, a beautiful place with blooming flowers in the spring. As of now it was early fall, a new start to a new semester and he realized that all the flowers had died. No matter, the sunrise would still be beautiful none the less. Classes would begin around seven and he would just have to be there before then, prompt as usual.

Name: Rei Kitamuraya.

Age: 22.

Ability: Darkness.

Birthday: December 1st.

Occupation: Student.

Position: Seke.

Background: Existing from a known family who used its powers in the past for the good, even seen as some kind of heroes to a certain point, Rei was met with a lot of expectations to follow in their footsteps. However he didn’t want that kind of attention, never having showed his face in front of the public even once when he got the chance to go outside by himself. Especially since he knew that his powers weren’t one of those that were seen as not harmful and protecting. His parents being born with the abilities of light and wind, they were a powerful, protecting duo who wanted the best for the civilians. Unlike them, he was born with darkness residing inside of him. In the books it was noted as Demon Spawn. There were indeed times that he felt that he was not alone, a second being existing inside of himself which he locked away so desperately, a part of his personality being hidden for everyone even his parents. They merely though he was a Reinforcement Type due to the way he fought with his katana. They believed the lie merely because he was their son and didn’t have a reason to do so in their opinion. Believing that it was his job to not stain his parents’ reputation by telling the world who he truly was, staying under the radar for his whole life.

The moment he was transferred to the school for the gifted, he was practically forced to show his abilities which were obliged to be kept as a secret, though this was not only for him, it was for every student present. To protect them from human’s harm. After a year of going to this school, he was called in by the principal who wanted to meet the piece of him that he kept in the darkest corners of his mind. Shocking Rei to the core as he felt like the man didn’t know what he was asking to come out of him. A dark creature who loved chaos more than anything. Something that was stronger than his current self. After a fiery debate, Rei reluctantly let go of the chains inside of him and let out the Demon Spawn. Red hues appeared which indicated his other side coming into the light. The ominous aura that spread throughout the room within an instant however the Demon didn’t do anything that would cause harm to the principal and merely talked about their current situation. After a few minutes, Rei turned back while having listened to his other side. Making him realize that they both had different views on the world, having to find a balance between the two which was now the goal they had to reach.

Wearing nothing more than a loose white shirt, black ripped jeans, combat boots and of course his katana [in its sheath] to go with, he went downstairs in the dormitory. His eyes barely opened due to the lack of sleep he received due to having gone for some drinks with some fellow students. They stayed out later than intended, even having to sneak into the building as it was way past curfew. Luckily none of the ‘guards’ decided to check in their rooms this night which would’ve caused for quite a ruckus as he was listed as one of the top three dangerous abilities. The others were still fine as their powers weren’t as harmful so their punishment wouldn’t be as bad. For Rei it would’ve meant not going outside for two weeks straight without a discussion. It happened before as he didn’t think it would end up that way, he was wrong about that.

Making himself a sandwich with strawberry jam before going outside, munching on the bread carefully as he didn’t want to eat it too fast. Merely because he liked the taste of it, easily being able to go on a strawberry diet. Though that was something he would never admit so easily as he was slightly embarrassed about his secret obsession. The patch on his eye didn’t move either so he didn’t need to redo it out in the open. Not that he cared but some people didn’t like the scar which resulted from him getting burned in his past. Mainly because his skin wasn’t how it was supposed to be and his eyes was completely white unlike his golden good eye. He could still see through the other one but had to cover it up because of the orders from the professors. It annoyed the hell out of him but gotten used to it over the years. Now it was a routine.

Yawning while stretching himself out once he neared the main building of the school. Seeing that he still had some time before classes started, he decided to just walk around for a bit, looking for something interesting to do. Luckily the weather wasn’t too bad despite it being fall, the sun was even shining which indicated for a good day to come, at least that was what he wanted it to be as he didn’t need more drama in his life than there already was. His parents still send him e-mails and letters whenever they could which to he replied out of politeness. He had distanced himself from them without them even realizing it just so he wouldn’t bother them too much. Also one of the reasons why he insisted on going to this school as here he didn’t need to hide himself.

With some absentminded strolling around, time went by and he had to go for the first lesson of the day which was combat. It was one of the lessons he actually liked as the others were too easy for him as he had been studying all normal subjects to pass time when his parents were away for a job. Not many people had expected for him to be actually smart, only seeing him as a delinquent. Some actually became a fan or admirer after learning about this, some even managed to become friends though this was quite rare. He had about two of them now, a boy and a girl which were a couple so sometimes he did feel like a third wheel.

During combat lessons they had to change into their suits so their normal clothes wouldn’t get damaged. For both female and male they were the same: black shirt, black sweatpants and black sneakers. This way they couldn’t complain about anything.

The lesson started as usual with the rules being explained again since it was a new start of the year. But then, the professor decided to form the pairs himself, appointing those who he thought would make a powerful team if they learned to work together. Once Rei’s name was being called, he took a step forward and then looked to the person who was going to be his partner: Shu Kogami. He didn’t particularly like the male as he was way too cheery for his own good, smiling like an idiot constantly. It reminded of how he was before and it irritated him to no end. However he didn’t want to start trouble and went over to the other, receiving stares from others as they knew what Rei was capable off. Some just wanted to pair up with him because of his strength and win a match.

Once the pairs were made, they got put against each other, becoming a 2v2 battle at once. Being up against those who could control water and ice. Ice was something Rei was weak against as his body could freeze up if he was too careless, water would definitely be a problem for the other guy as he was able to control fire. Seems like they had to go against their natural enemies this time. How bothersome. Letting out a deep sigh as he rubbed the back of his neck, checking out the opponents for this match. It couldn’t get worse as they were third out of the ten teams. The battleground took place in an abandoned city near to their school, only on a walking distance away from them. They kept it that way so they could freely train the students without worrying about actual civilians.

Moving into the direction of where they had to be, he glanced to his current partner, introducing himself nonchalantly: “I’m Rei Kitamuraya. I can manipulate darkness through my katana while utilizing my physical strength I build over the years at the same time. Let’s try to get along for now.” A fierce glance in his eyes which he did unconsciously whenever he talked to strangers or people he wasn’t too fond of. Meaning professors weren’t any different and had caused quite some misunderstandings resulting in him getting some sort of punishment such as cleaning the classroom.

Shu shifted pulling himself up on the stone edge of the cliff at the end of his meadow. It overlooked the battleground they trained on and opened up the entire world. For someone who was always locked away this was the place to be, somewhere where he could be himself without worrying about what others thought of him. A hand pushed his hair back from his face exposing that ugly scar to the world as he looked over the land beneath him. It was as if this secret place held his own secrets and he didn’t have to put the mask up here. A smile didn’t touch his features as he sat watching the sunrise, for here he didn’t need to pretend.

Absently, his thumb brushed across the puckered scar on his left wrist. Thinking about the past and how he wished it had been different. Most gifted’s were treated as if they were Gods. Treated with pure happiness that they were chosen to have the gene of their household. Some were even brought here soon as they were old enough in hopes they would do good with their life. Shu was still confused on his own gene feeling the warmth of a flame against his wrist, as if soothing the nights nightmare. His parents were humans, normal humans with nothing special to their genetic make up. His sister was normal, with nothing special about her. So what made him so special that he had to be…this?

The chimes of the morning bells started to sing and Shu quickly extinguished the fire in his palm before hopping off the ledge. Quickly he brushed off his suit and tried a smile on for the day. It felt foreign and ugly but he thought he would still try. Today was not the day for someone to get on his bad side. He pulled his suit jacket closer up to his neck and started walking to his first class. Sadly, it was combat training, his least favorite course.

Shu had a problem believing in himself and it put a damper on the way he used his abilities. He always held himself back too scared that he would loose control and hurt someone, and be punished. This was the reason he never surpassed even those with weaker powers than his because he felt that the events of the past would come back to him. Sure, it was illogical to think that the school would punish students in the way his family did but it was still a worry of his.

His mind on autopilot he quickly changed into his combat clothes and shifted uneasily under the jacket he wore with his. The principle was very understanding to his predicament and accommodated for him to feel relaxed around the other students. This is not to say that the other men in the changing room with him wouldn’t see the scars on his body, this would just have to be pushed to the back of his mind. He couldn’t get his own personal locker room. He just quickly changed and then left the locker room.

Shu didn’t really know too many people in the class this year, this being his second year at the school. He looked around for one of his only friends only to let his eyes settle on a dark headed figure close to the back of the class. Disgust swooned in his stomach and he clicked his tongue, of course he had to have combat with him…the schools delinquent. As if his day couldn’t get any worse he heard his name soon after Rei’s and his heart sank. They were working together today…as a team?

His eyes shifted back up to the professor his heart sinking. Damn everything, this was going to be hard. He tilted his head to see with his one good eye the guy walking toward him and he inwardly sighed. A smile lifted to his lips despite his own feelings, “My name is Shu. I hope we can get along for the time being.” Quickly his blue orbs left the others golden ones and they found their opponents for the day. Ice and water…of course they had to fight their opponents. His eyebrows lowered in a thin line trying to understand the concept of the fight as they all turned to head to the fighting area.

They were going to have to work together in the hopes to defeat their mortal enemies basically. If Shu didn’t work with Rei the ice would get him and vice versa. He peered over at his partner for the day, looking him over. He was strong looking, handsome, and even had swordsmanship abilities. Would it be so bad to partner with him? Shu had never seen his partners power up close, he had only heard stories about it. Being here only for two years you heard rumors but an upperclassmen almost never interacted with a lower classman. This explained why they never were in the same classes together.

Surprisingly Shu looked around and realized he was in a class with almost all upperclassman. Save for himself and a small handful of lowerclassman. Confusion racked his brain, why would they place him with an upper level class on combat? He was in all upper level classes for mostly everything else but combat was his weakest class. He couldn’t think about it now as he noticed they were only a few feet from the battle grounds. He was never excited about fighting, he didn’t see why he would need it in the future…he didn’t want his powers.

Rolling his eyes as he noticed the anxiousness inside the other male which wasn’t too hard as he was made out of darkness. Easily feeling the negative emotions of others once he put his senses to it. The worse the feeling, the easier it was to take notice of it. Especially now that he switched on his battle mode, he could sense the emotions clearly once he took a look at the person in question. It was one of the downsides of his power but he still had to get used to it in order to use it properly. Even if one side of him liked the feeling of it, he couldn’t get rid of this, not in this life. The two up front who he had to battle against soon were also being fidgety, glancing behind them to catch a glance of Rei who was merely following the group.

Walking in silence towards the battlegrounds without actual planning along the way. Rei didn’t dislike it, in fact he appreciated it as he didn’t feel like talking to those who didn’t even want to be here in the first place. It was easy to see by the way the other felt about this whole combat idea where they had to utilize their powers in their advantage. He had seen the male fighting once before and honestly, even a kid could defeat the guy by throwing a pan to his head. It wouldn’t even be dodged. Not being able to wrap his head around that kind of mindset as it was exactly the same as of a weakling which was something he absolutely didn’t want to be. At least not when it came to fighting.

He didn’t think that the highest levels in combat would need to match up with those who were the weakest. That was probably the reason why he got teamed up with Shu out of all the people. Same went for the girl who could control ice as she was in the weak class. The guy that controlled water was in the high level class. So both classes got teamed up with each other. An easy way of thinking for the professors who only had to mix and match after getting that idea. Licking his lips as there was still some of the strawberry flavour hanging on them which made him feel a bit more content.

Before realizing it, they already arrived at the battleground. Monitors hanging at the entrance of the stage so they could see what was going on in the actual field. The professors would stay close to the students but on a certain distance for the time when somebody would actually get seriously hurt in the process. It happened before, even with Rei as he didn’t think the opponent would be that weak when it came to their physical body, even more since he was one of the few using an actual weapon.

Sitting down on top of one of the rocks as he inspected the pair he had to go up against. Grinning mischievously towards the water dude which he oddly enough got along with. Only receiving a playful sticking out of the tongue, both laughing at their childishness. But since they were teamed up with the weaker ones, they had to come up with a plan this time as they couldn’t just go with the flow. That was the water man his opinion. Stretching out his arms which made a cracking sound as if it broke but it only made him move better. His class had gotten used to this sound but the others looked at him shocked. It was quite an amusing sight to see actually.

His eye going back to the guy he had to team up with. “So, do you want a plan to go with or just go with the flow?” He asked, head slightly tilted to the side as he talked to the younger one. “Honestly, they might go for the shitty match-up, meaning that I’ll mainly have to focus on the ice girl while you have to deal with mister water over there. We can win over that strategy if you work together with me or just let me face them alone which only a coward would want to do. But it’s up to you. What do you want to do?” His voice void of any emotion as he didn’t really care about the person he had to work together with.

The moment he finished talking, the first match already came to an end due to the power gap between the two pairs. Remembering the words of the professor in charge of combat that he had to work together more with his partner. Easier said than done as they relief on him just a bit too much, making him lead the entire thing on his own while they just followed behind him. Occasionally giving him some back-up when needed. It was quite annoying if he had to say the truth. He would be better off by himself if they were just going to be there when they felt like it.

He let himself calm down. Rei wasn’t all that bad long as they were going to be working together he couldn’t be a dick. He tried to feel a little more optimistic about it, to feel a little less outweighed. As their feet guided them to the battle grounds Shu couldn’t help but coming up with a plan in his head. Even though he wasn’t great at combat because of his own limitations he was good at combat strategy and could win without using his powers all that much.

He had never gone full out before on one of his opponents, and not using his powers meant he had to use something else. If he was able to get close enough hand to hand combat wasn’t horrible, he could win easily without even making a small flame. If his opponent was a long-range fighter this was a problem for he would have to project his abilities out in order to win.

Before he knew it they had arrived at the battle grounds and the first match was being set up. He followed Rei to the sidelines leaning against a metal post watching the fight before him. It was an unfair battle because of the power gap but this was most likely the case with most of the battles. His eyes flicked to the tongue that was directed in their direction and a little smile formed. So even Rei could be childish if he wanted to be? How interesting.

The voice that spoke shocked him a little and he looked up at the big rock that Rei had claimed as his own. “I think we need a plan.” He pushed off the metal bar and sighed. “I’m not helpless and I’m not a coward. I didn’t plan to let you take care of it all on your own. Strategy is key…least for me it is. Your power is stronger than most so you don’t have to rely so heavily on strategy.” He paused a moment looking up at Rei before he smiled a little. A sign of good nature rather than just mean like he was before. Sure he didn’t like Rei but he wasn’t going to be a dick while they needed to work together.

“I’m assuming they are going to throw our weaknesses at us. Why wouldn’t water come at me when he knows he can win if I use my ability? Just like the ice girl has a better chance with you than with me.” He looked between their opponents and then he chuckled lightly to himself. “We would need to work together. If I get wet its game over for my ability…the only way we can win is to put aside our differences and get along for the time being.” He sighed gently and looked over at them once more realizing the other match had already ended.

“Can you come down here so we can talk without having to yell? I would rather them not know our strategy. We don’t have much time.” He spoke in a rush turning and looking up at the boulder as if begging the older boy to come down. His voice was friendly, even though it may be a fake friendly feeling he still tried to be nice.

He didn’t know what they were going to do yet and what Rei had in mind but he hoped it was something he could do. No one understood him…no one understood why he was the way he was. They figured the reason he lost battles and didn’t use his ability was because he wasn’t good at it and that he was weak. Even the tone in his partners voice screamed disappointment in being with him. It was a horrible feeling to be written off as a coward so early in their partnership. He felt that he needed to prove him wrong now. Needed to show him that he was capable of doing what he could.

He straightened his shoulders and leaned closer to the battle trying to hear the next listing. He breathed a sigh of relief when he didn’t hear his name or Rei’s over the speakers. This meant they had at least another battle to figure out what they were going to do against the two enemies. It would be a lie if he said he wasn't afraid and worried about the outcome. He was terrified of using his powers and he was terrified of being with Rei because he knew if he let him down it would be just like before. He wouldn't be of any use to anyone...

Rei listened to the words of Shu as it was the most normal thing to do. Believe it or not but he actually wasn’t such a bad guy if one didn’t already have their prejudice ready just by hearing the rumours about him. It was only normal to be rude to the people who did the same to him as they were mostly the ones who provoked him out of nowhere. Without a reason even. Sometimes they apologized as they got to truly know about him while others were too stubborn to realize that they were wrong and just avoided him as much as possible. People could be weird and he had given up on understanding them quite some time ago already. He even didn’t get his parents, nor did he know what they were even thinking.

As the guy asked for him to come down, he hesitantly left his comfortable spot and slid down to come face to face with the younger male. Surprisingly they didn’t differ that much in height which slightly ticked him off but didn’t let it show on his face as that wasn’t important at that exact moment. What he was interested in was for the plan that didn’t involve getting his butt kicked for everyone to see. Though that was a rather rare sight, it still happened. He wasn’t a sore loser so he asked about the strategy behind it which was quite an eyeopener to him as he got to know more and more about people’s abilities.

“So… Assuming that they are going to put us against the trickiest opponent, how are we going to tackle it? I’ve noticed that you break down when you get water on you so we’ll have to avoid that at any cost. The one using water uses ranged attacks and is pretty good at keeping the enemy away from him so you’ll have to take that in account. For the one using ice, I just have to make sure I don’t slip or freeze which means that it’ll get hard to win the match.” He explained to the other as he remembered the abilities. He wasn’t too familiar with the girl so he had to watch his steps with her. It was going to be like this if he ever had to face someone he wasn’t familiar with so it was a good experience for him to go through this.

“So, what are you planning to do?” He asked, slightly interested into what the plan was going to be. He did know about the strategic capabilities of the other but the guy never put them to full use as he avoided using his abilities to a maximum. Unlike Rei who wanted to do combat so he could control the power residing in him more and avoid getting consumed by it. It was the only way to survive from it, to not be taken in by it. The Demon was calm most of the time which was relieving but the times it did attempt to come out, it was like an inner discussion to see the advantages of disadvantages from both sides. Like twins who were polar opposites from each other yet there was this invisible link which made them almost inseparable.

Glancing once in a while towards the monitors that were set up to watch some of the moves the students used. Some of them were pretty neat while others still needed some improvement, having a lot of holes in their defence and offense. It wasn’t like Rei didn’t have any weaknesses, it was just that the people didn’t fully utilize those weak spots to bring him down. Well, he wasn’t making it easy for them either so it always ended in quite a battle from both sides.

Shu was more than happy for Rei to join him on the ground where most humans walked. He didn’t have a problem with heights but it still wasn’t the place he wanted to be. He realized that Rei was only a little taller than him which was sort of a nice feeling and kind of annoying at the same time. Sadly Shu still had to look up at him some in order to talk to him.

As Rei spoke Shu shifted his attention to the water boy, analyzing his stature and his build. He was a bigger guy, older too. He definitely was taller than Shu and using ranged attacks meant Shu would have to counter with ranged attacks. His mind was working as Rei spoke to him looking between the two. The girl was smaller than Rei, even smaller than Shu, they could easily both take her down together if they didn’t have another enemy to worry about.

“Alright, this is what I’m thinking.” He turned to Rei and smiled a little at his thought process. “Why wouldn’t they put us against our weaknesses. He is going to attack me…it’s the logical decision on his part. If I get wet my powers are going to be limited and if I get soaked I’m screwed. But, the good part is is that water is also weak to fire. Just like ice is. I don’t know an awful lot about you so I’m intrigued to figure out your abilities more.”

His head tilted hearing the announcer on the speakers once more. Once he didn’t hear them he continued. “She is small, we could easily take her. I could easily take her being her worst nightmare in terms of weaknesses. Ice is…easy. I can melt it without much thought. Water I can evaporate but it takes time and I won’t have time here. They will attack their proper opposites so…maybe we should swap opponents. It’s a good strategy, you can easily take water and I could easily take ice. Its an option, but if you have anything better then please fire away.” He peered up at Rei’s good eye realizing they had more in common than he thought.

He wondered what had blinded him. His eyes lingered on the eyepatch a moment before he cleared his throat and went back to what he had been saying. “I can project…I’m not as confident with it and I don’t do it often but I can. IF we decide to stick with our weaknesses then I’ll have to fight long-range water with long-range fire.” He tapped his fingers on his chin thinking. He was having a hard time deducing the situation having not seen the two of them fight before and having never worked with Rei.

It was going to be a learning experience either way. He brightened up, “I don’t want you doing all the work but maybe…if they think I’m going to stay back while you fight for me it can give us an upper hand. I’m not stupid I know that everyone here thinks I’m a coward. You could “protect” me” he used air quotes here, “While I sneak around and attack. They wouldn’t see it coming most likely. Just another option on our strategy. What are your thoughts?” He asked his blue eyes peering up at Rei with a hopeful look.

Rei hummed in response to the other as what the younger one was saying made sense. If they indeed managed to swap opponents, they would have more of a chance to win but knowing mister water on the other side, that wasn’t going to be the case. However he let the other speak about what was on his mind and the planning was not bad, just a little obvious in his point of view if they were against newbies in the field. But knowing the high levels, they didn’t take anyone lightly even if they were thought of as weak. It was the first thing they realized in order to get better. Never underestimate the opponent as it would fire back easily and put them in a pinch as a result. A double-edged sword.

Leaning against a piece of a barely standing wall as he thought about it more carefully now. “Knowing him, he’d look for you first like a dog hunting for its prey. That’s how he works. He wants to know where who is. Same goes to me. It’s better to know the whereabouts of your opponent than to strike blindly and get trapped instead. I can however pull their attention and give you a certain amount of time to reach them from their blind spot. Then again, if you’re too far from me, I can’t shield you and it’ll be more risky. But I think that’ll work for the best.” He commented with a light nod as he thought about it once more.

His eyes then became more serious, fierce as he looked at Shu. “Even if people think of you as weak, high levels won’t take it lightly and consider you as a threat unlike your class members. Don’t expect him to go easy on you since if you don’t, you might find yourself in his grasp. People change when they get into combat like this, so you’ll see their true self. Well, in my class that’s the case.” The remark he made was serious, no joking tone to be spotted as he was treating this as an actual serious matter. If an actual fight would take place, one wouldn’t joke around either and go over it lightly as their lives would depend on it.

Afterwards however, he showed a more relaxed expression again as he didn’t want to scare the other off too much. He maybe took it a bit too serious as well, but it was just to make the younger male realize what could happen when out there on the battlefield due to the difference in skill. Patting the other on the back with a cheeky smile: “Just don’t pee yourself since he can use that water too.” Laughing at his own joke, wiping a tear away that rolled out of his eye before moving to the entrance of the battlefield as the match was over by now.

“So we meet again, Shin. How many times has it been now?” “I think it was seven.” “Right~ And you lost five of them.” Rei said, laughing all mighty, a little overdramatized which made Shin laugh as well. He was one of the two friends he had mentioned before. His girlfriend was partnered with someone else at the moment so they didn’t really have much time to talk since they had to come up with some tactics for the lesson. The two pairs who just finished, finally came back and took a seat while being patched up by one of the professors. Mainly light scratches and nothing worse than that.

“Team Water and Ice go in first.” The teacher said, making the other two move deeper into the battlefield. Rei grinned as he watched them go in until they were out of his sight. “So it’ll be hunt or be hunted.” He commented before receiving the green light and walking on the main street of the domain. It was quite amazing that they had a small village for themselves to train in, it also made everything more realistic as if they were in an actual threatening situation.

Pulling out his sword before giving one more look to Shu. “Just think of me as a swordsmanship expert. If you do, it won’t cause too much problems.” He explained reassuringly.

Shu shifted on the balls of his feet as he listened to the soft hum of his partner. He was actually thinking over his plan as if it was pretty good. His fleeting moment of happiness that an upperclassman liked his thinking was shattered when Rei started to speak. A smile was replaced with a look of thought as his entire plan had to be rethought. It made sense, he wasn’t in his class anymore, he was with the big dogs now.

He had to stop acting like he was in his own weight class and realize these were real people with strong abilities. He shifted slightly on his feet waiting for Rei to make a comment. When he did Shu let out a little sigh. “Okay…” he nodded listening to the new plan. Wait for Rei to draw their attention and then strike. It would be his only chance at getting close enough to the two of them and being able to take them down without much trouble.

The serious tone in Rei’s voice made his eyes snap to the other. He was treating him like a child. His eyebrows tightened and he nodded, “I’m not helpless…I get it…” he said softly and turned following Rei. He could laugh all he wanted but it just started a fire in Shu’s stomach that he couldn’t quench unless he let it all out. He had so much built up anger that it was only building with Rei’s stupid joke that hurt his feelings.

Rei, over everyone else, underestimated him. Shu could be great if he just let himself be something more than just a goody goody. He was too scared of himself to attack properly even though the kids know what they signed up for to be here. He rolled up the sleeves of his jacket to his elbows feeling the familiar warmth at his fingertips. His body was already ready for the ring so as they got closer to the ring his mind completely went into a mode it hadn’t been before.

He had never taken a battle seriously but these guys were serious. He didn’t pay any attention to the playful banter between Rei and his opponent. They were friends big deal, he couldn’t let it damper his feelings at the moment. He heard the teacher call out and the opponents move into the abandoned buildings. They disappeared behind foliage and falling apart buildings.

It was a game of who could find who faster and win. Like tag but with deadly powers added to the mix. When they had the all go he walked into the entrance of the battle grounds, his blood running hot. “I’ll be fine…lets just get this over with…” he said shifting on his feet. He wasn’t confident of his power…even though it was greater than he gave himself credit for. If he just let it do its thing he could win, he could do this.

He ventured deeper into the battle grounds tilting his head to listen. He knew talking would only give the enemy a chance to find them so it would most likely be silent from then on. If they could find the two before they found them it would be an advantage. They would be able to win the battle hopefully with the element of surprise on their hands. Shu shifted his eyes to Rei a moment taking in the sword he held. He had never seen his power up close. something inside of him was rather excited to see this so called "Demon spawn" play out. He was stronger than most so he was interested in his abilities to start. The sword itself was beautiful, Shu wished he was more confident in his abilities. In this situation they had each others backs and they were going to fight together. He had to trust in Rei...even if Rei didn't trust in him.

Rei hummed in response to Shu before they parted ways. His eyes lingering on the back of the younger one as he couldn’t help but to feel slightly worried about the guy. Especially since he didn’t know how much he had grown since the last time he had witnessed him in combat. A light throbbing in his head could be felt as his power awakened, it was a regular occurrence as he hadn’t come to an agreement with the demon inside. A side-effect as the principal had called it. But there was this feeling that if he allowed it to mix into him completely he would lose a part of himself. He wasn’t sure, but the main factor was fear. He feared the monster he could become if not taken enough measurements.

Seconds of deadly silence occurred, only his breath he could hear. Tightening his grip on his katana as he felt that something was off at a certain point. And just at that moment a blast of ice balls were shot at him, making him take cover behind the ruins of a car. The thuds could be clearly heard, echoing through the small alleyways crossing through the domain. Having to get a move into it as he heard the girl getting closer, he dashed out of the way, making a circular movement to get to her but was blocked by a wall of water that threatened to crash into him.

Gritting his teeth as he used his strength to barely jump out of the way so the water wouldn’t take him into a prison-like ball. “You shit.” He grumbled towards Shin who merely smirked back into his direction, pissing Rei off as he didn’t expect them to be on the offense. Well, with their combo it was certainly possible, meaning that he could get into serious trouble if touched by any kind of water too as she could freeze it on the spot.

His thoughts shot into action as he watched their every movement, every muscle or expression in their face. However taken by surprise, his feet were suddenly in a small puddle of water, probably due to the splash from earlier. As he tried to move, the puddle became ice, making him slip slightly but kept standing up by the use of his katana being pierced into the ground. Luckily his foot didn’t freeze which would’ve made it harder to move. But instead of seeing it as a disadvantage, he used the force he put into his katana by making him swing back into their direction, making them jump backwards with force.

The male was still looking for signs for the other but at that moment of distraction he forgot about it. Just a few seconds for the other to strike. The strike Rei gave to the ground was surrounded by darkness. The slash going further than the utter end of his sword, making a crack in the ground indicating his power with just that amount of effort.

Shu didn’t go very far from Rei. He could feel his eyes on his back but the other didn’t turn around. He didn’t want to seem weak…worried. As they slowly started walking with one another yet far enough away they weren’t “together”. Shu could feel an itch in the back of his throat that made him feel sick to his stomach. He was shocked with fear, fear of messing up.

His ears were on high alert wondering where their opponents were. It was too quiet. As if his mind had invoked a sound he heard the hard hit of ice against metal. He quickly slid over the top of a car and hid out of sight, and out of mind. Surprisingly he was behind the girl and he watched as she walked up on a metal car. Rei must have been hiding out behind there.

Just after he thought that he heard a soft comment before he jumped out of the way and back into the fight. Rei was…nimble and quick. Shu watched as the water man came into view blocking the attack Rei had managed to place on the girl and causing him to be on defense. Shu wondered what he could do but there wasn’t an opening. Not a moment for him to jump in.

As soon as his mind thought that he noticed the water man looking around. Probably for him, he chuckled softly. He had left his left side completely open to Rei and he was caught off guard by Reis attack. As the two of them watched the crack split open Shu stealthy slipped from his hiding spot and ran at Shin. Flames erupted in his palms and soles of his feet as he slid on the ground knocking Shin off balance. All the while shooting a column of fire toward the girl watching it singe her hair slightly as she moved to dodge it. It wasn’t the best attack known to man but he had knocked one of them down and successfully attacked the other.

Quickly he got to his feet, fire daggers in his hands. The flames could take shape if he wanted them to and as Shin was laying on the ground he made a jab for him. Not giving him a moment to get back to his feet. He knew he only had a split moment to attack before shin would be on the defense from his attack. Putting his flames into shapes was a new ability for him, mostly from working on his own. He didn’t like showing things to others and this was something he often didn’t use because he was scared of the outcome.

In this situation though he figured it was life or death. Shu didn’t want to die today. He quickly jumped off the water man to not get hit with water. Crouching slightly to ease his stance. He had the full attention of at least one enemy and the girl was more than pissed at him to put most of her attention on him also. His eyes moved to Reis a moment as if trying to figure out what their next move was. He was going to have to be on defense atleast until he found an opening.

The moment the opening was created, the kid seemed to have caught on and knocked Shin from his feet while blasting some attacks to the girl who didn’t seem too pleased about it. Surprised by the change in Shu’s behaviour, he didn’t feel like he should be too bothered by his partner. They could actually manage to win this if it kept going on like this. A grin spread across his lips now that he was more sure of the match than he was before.

The moment, Shu steadied himself, Rei already launched for another attack, mainly focusing on the girl as her attention was pulled by his partner. Using his speed to get to her fast, catching her off guard and whacking her with the handle of his katana, making her crash into the wall behind her with a nasty sound. Though it mainly came from the already crumbling wall than from her body. She seemed to be in a daze by the attack and couldn’t move instantly which was the moment when Shin launched his defence immediately.

A trident was formed in his hand, clashing with Rei’s sword equally. Their aura’s erupting from their bodies: Shin had a light blue one while Rei had a black, purple one. The moment Rei started pushing back, he noticed the trident transforming in a lasso which took a hold of him. It was tight but he could get out of it with his katana. However the lasso started to become bigger and then ice was being coated over it, meaning the girl composed herself again. “Shin, you ass.” He growled towards the male.

He then remembered the fire abilities the other had. If the guy could do it, he would be able to get rid of the frost on Rei’s body but if it went wrong it could hurt quite a bit as he would be burned in the process. Luckily the nurse could heal immediately without the possibility of having scars. It was a nice power to have, though it was mainly for the supporting people.

With his rigorous training in the past, he was able to break the ice, but the frost still limited his abilities, it even stung whenever he made certain movements. Luckily his legs weren’t touch so that was one less difficulty to deal with right now. He ran back towards Shu and gestured for him to follow as it’d be a hassle to attack them now that they were on such high alert. Moving through the alleyways before taking a small break. His muscles ached where the frost was covering him. “She really has an annoying ability.” He groaned.

Shu didn’t feel so out of place anymore. His body was working the way he wanted it to and he had landed a solid attack at at least one of the opponents. This was a good change for him and as he peered across the two enemies to Rei he noticed a smile form on his partners face. It was almost contagious and Shu smiled a little as they seemed to gain a smaller upper hand. As soon as the girl looked his way Rei took the chance and attacked her.

Shu was already on the defense for Shin who threw a few attacks his way before realizing his partner was in danger. He turned and threw a trident toward Rei causing an explosion of mana between the two. Shu had to cover his eyes as the aura of Shin was a little too close for his liking. Rei’s aura was…beautiful in a dark sad kind of way. Shu watched the attacks between the two. As he watched his partner lassoed in ice he wanted to jump to his aid but there was nothing to do before Rei broke the ice.

He started to run and Shu followed, the flames at his side disappearing. He peered over to his partner as they ran, on the offense. He was panting softly when they paused in an ally way. Shu took no time to shift to Rei as if looking for any type of wounds. He was shocked at how bold he was to touch the others arm as if looking for something that was wrong.

“Yea..she does. Are you okay? What can I do to help?” he asked seeing the apparent pain in Rei’s face. “I’m sorry I didn’t help you…before I realized it you were already breaking out of there.” He laughed nervously and looked down letting his hand fall form Rei. He felt useless sometimes, as if his abilities weren’t actually worth anything. Even their opponents didn’t pay that much attention to him. As if he was less of a danger to him.

He made his mind busy with looking for their enemies. Crouching down as he walked to the edge of the wall peering out a little bit to see in the clearing they were behind. His eyes caught sight of the girl, alone. He looked back at Rei knowing that they were still in the clear to heal him if they could. Nervously he walked back to Rei with concern in his blue orbs as he tried to understand what the ice had done to his partner. He didn’t really like Rei but he did however, want to win something for once and he wanted to prove that he wasn’t a coward.

Shu could care less about Rei, he just wanted to make sure that his partner was okay. In a real world situation it would be life or death without his partner. He decided to take this at face value and treat it like a real battle. With his life on the line. “Here, sit down. Maybe I can help…?” He asked lightly pulling on the others wrist toward the ground. “We have a moment, the girl is around. I don’t know where Shin is but she far enough away from us we can take a breather.” He said hoping that Rei for once would just listen to him. They had been together for only an hour so far and he realized that Rei and himself were a little stubborn.

Rei looked over to Shu who seemed to be in a slight panic as he wasn’t exactly in top form anymore with the ice on his arms. Thinking about it carefully but only one thing came to mind which was Shu having to thaw the ice off of him. It was an idea that could come out good or bad, it was one of the two, no middle path to be taken. He didn’t know how he was going to ask this from the other as he knew the kid wasn’t too sure from his own abilities yet. However the fight from before went actually decent if he wasn’t caught into the lasso of Shin which was a defeat in some sort.

Sitting down on some rubble from the broken walls, facing the younger one directly. “There’s only one way to get rid of these which is you having to thaw the frost. I’ve seen that if you hug someone and channel your body heat, it could work.” He proposed however it was up to Shu if he wanted to go through with it or not. Placing his head against the building behind him as he took a breather, thinking more clearly now instead of just going on a whim like he used to do when in combat with people of his class. They were not all like that but most of them were, those he got often teamed up with.

Grinning cheekily towards the other as he kind off wanted to see the powers from up close. “All you need to do is give me a hug.” He said, opening his arms as if preparing himself for the sudden heat income. His clothes would give some kind of protection if there was too much of it and he would need to sign that it was enough on time or the nurse would have to heal a bit more than necessary which she absolutely disliked to do. She didn’t like her students to get hurt and wanted to see a smile on their faces instead.

Shu peered over at Rei as if waiting patiently for him to tell him something, anything that would let him help him. He didn’t mind if they lost, he was more concerned about Rei being…well hurt. He could tell that Rei was thinking something over. Something that apparently was taking a lot of thought. He felt almost bad for not being able to help him figure it out.

When Rei finally sat Shu crouched next to him looking over his face as the other turned to him. What he said was a little…wait a hug? Panic swarmed his thoughts as he looked over to Rei. “Wait…I could burn you Rei…” He spoke softly his eyes looking more than worried. “If I burn you its over anyway! What if I can’t control it?” he asked watching as the other just seemed to smile at him and open his arms to Shu as if the heat didn’t scare him.

He was afraid, afraid of reliving the past. He could see the face of his sister when he was 14 and her pained look on her face. He didn't want to hurt anyone, never again. He didn't want to hurt Rei. Sure he wasn't fond of the guy but he didn't want to burn him. Shu was afraid of losing control. Afraid that if he let himself, for just a moment, think he had a handle on his powers they would flare up and hurt someone. Fire was wild, and unpredictable. He couldn't control it the way he wanted to but the only way they were getting out of this was if Shu thawed the binds. He had to muster up his courage to even nod as an agreement to hugging Rei and channeling his heat toward him without setting him on fire.

Panic and worry filled his mind as he looked at that smiling face. He was actually warm, almost welcoming. Shu looked to Rei with uncertainty before moving and hugging the taller man around the neck. He shifted slightly so his chest was pressed up against Rei’s, a light blush forming when he realized almost everyone could probably see them.

He couldn’t mess up, he wouldn’t mess up. “I can do this…” He said more to himself for it was a whisper against Rei’s neck. He could feel the warmth in his body rising and he had to breathe out, feeling the warmth of an unnatural human output. “I’m sorry Rei…” He said softly as if prefacing just in case he happened to lose control of himself. He closed his eyes tightly focusing all of his concentration on keeping the flames at bay and warming his core, yet still protruding heat.

Instantly, as he felt the heat leaving his body and channeling it to Rei he opened his eyes with a childlike laugh. “Holy shit I’m doing it.” He was more than excited for his accomplishment. He lost a small bit of control feeling the warmth grow to a dangerous level and he blushed a little pulling back in Rei’s arms to look at him. “oops…is it too warm for you?” he asked his blue eyes peering up at Rei’s.

Rei nodded lightly towards the other, seeing the panicked face clearly now. Waiting patiently for the other to make up his mind and to a pleasant surprise, Shu decided to go through with it. The warm touch of the other made him blink rapidly as he didn’t expect the temperature from the male this soon already. It wasn’t overwhelming, it was more like being covered by a blanket which had a nice feeling to it. The moment the heat was actually being spread, it was more like laying next to a fire place. Cosy. Something that he hadn’t felt in a long time.

The vibration from Shu’s voice, made a shiver run up his spine. His face becoming almost instantly red due to the other. He hadn’t been hugged like this before, the whisper even less as he hadn’t seen that one coming at all. His heart beating slightly faster than it should be, making him pray that the other wouldn’t feel it. Trying to keep himself calm as he reminded himself that this was just something that had to be done in order to win the game. Yet, he couldn’t completely calm down just yet as the tingling sensation still lingered on his neck even when the other had already pulled back from him.

Turning his blushing face away from Shu as he was slightly embarrassed about this. “It was fine.” He responded, scraping his throat before getting up from his seat again. He had to calm down or he would do some stupid shit which could cause him to get hurt. Rubbing the back of his neck as he tried to focus on the battle at hand before feeling the presence of somebody near them. Pushing Shu away with force just in time so he wouldn’t get hit by a water bullet the size of a baseball. Smacking his katana against the bullet which made it go back to the owner who made it disappear.

“You take care of Miss Ice.” Rei yelled before swinging his katana against Shin’s trident. The clashing of both materials created sparks. Both not being able to use much of their powers as they were mainly concentrating on not to get hit by the weapons they were holding. Kicking Shin away into the main street again so they had more space. Not letting the other even give a spare moment to breathe, they went at each other. The sounds echoing throughout the street, both having some cuts here and there as they couldn’t dodge everything.

Eventually both were blasted away from each other due to the force output. Seeing that this was going to be their last attack, they both shot their most tactful ability. Shin threw his water slices which were small, fast and damaging blades being shot to Rei who got rid of them with one swing of his ability: dark cloaked slash. Channelling his darkness into his sword and releasing that darkness with a slash that flies at the opponent. The wave of darkness retains the same sharpness as an edged weapon and also has the ability to negate other spells if enough energy was put into it.

With that, Shin fell down defeated by the blow. Setting a foot on the other to make sure he wouldn’t receive another surprise attack. “Shu ?” He yelled for the other, wondering where they were at and if he should intervene or not.

Shu was shocked to see a blush on the others face. This caused himself to blush and he looked away with a look of shock. He let go of Rei as he stood and quickly followed suit brushing off the dust from being on the ground. Had they just had a moment? Shu had to shake his thoughts. Just because he was gay didn’t mean every guy was. Though thinking back on it Rei was blushing up to his ears. The thought made him chuckle softly under his breathe. Such a cute gesture from someone with such a cold appearance.

Shu was in a much better mood as he moved to follow Rei as if to ask if he was okay. Just as he was walking up to him Rei pushed him, rather hard. Shu felt the had surface of building behind his head and he had to blink a few times to try and figure out what had just happened. A split moment passed where Shu thought Rei was mad at him but as soon as he heard the clashing of metal he realized that Rei had saved him.

He quickly got to his feet, dashing away from the battle that was happening there. He nodded to Rei as he heard his new order and headed to find the ice girl. He didn’t need to see the rest of the fight to know that Rei would probably win. They were up against a better pairing this time, the ice girl had no chance if he fought with confidence. He ran through alleyways until he heard the girl talking to herself? He was a little confused and realized she was singing. Apparently without Shin around she wasn’t so high alert.

He felt warmth in his palms and looked down seeing the molten daggers he had had moments before. His eyes focused on her and as soon as her back was turned he attacked. He knocked her from her feet sliding the sword to her throat only to be met with an iceball to the face. A groan escaped his lips as he dashed back, now facing her one on one.

He chuckled softly rubbing his face with the back of his hand. “Ouch.” He licked the blood from his bottom lip and darted to her, dodging her long-ranged attacks and before she knew it he was infront of her. Jabbing at her weakspots with his weapons that were made of fire. She blocked them easily enough only he was quicker than she was with the ability of surprise on his side.

She got smart, and started to use bigger sheets of ice to block his attacks however, apparently she forgot fire didn’t just come from his hands. He laughed a little feeling the smoke leave his lips only to punch her in the stomach. If she didn’t do something he was going to win. She doubled over in pain putting a small shield against herself, coating her body in ice to give herself a few moments to come back. This was all he needed, he cupped his hands at his mouth and blew. Instead of air a giant tunnel of fire left his lips melting through the ice cap easily enough. She dodged it last minute to not burn herself but his hand was at her throat, flames arching to touch and burn her skin.

They were both breathing heavily and she was holding his wrist keeping the sharp, engulfed tip of his knife from puncturing her throat. “Over here!” He called out with a happy little tone. Rei had helped give him the confidence he needed to win. His other dagger was waiting patiently at her side, no hand holding it back. It was a finishing blow either way. “Did we win?!?” he called out to Rei not letting the other girl go. He walked with her around the corner so Rei was in eyesight and he smiled at his partner like a kid on Christmas.

When he saw Shu appearing from behind the corner, he let out a sigh of relief and then the bells rang, indicating that the match was over. “Team Shu and Rei win! Please return to the base.” The voice said throughout the speakers placed all over the battlefield. Rei removed his foot and got Shin back up to his feet, patting the other on his back happily. Shin however merely grumbled and stuck out his tongue again before going to the ice girl, saying some encouraging words to her so she wouldn’t lose her confidence after this. After all, it didn’t happen much that these two classes got to work together. Also, students could be replaced throughout the year, depending on their skill level. It wasn’t an unusual thing to occur.

Rei rolled his eyes as he knew his friend wouldn’t be pissed for too long as they both made faults and it just happened that one of them was the final drop. Chuckling lightly at his own pun that he had made up in his head, shaking it off as he didn’t want to come over as rude to Shin who wasn’t too good with losing. Luckily they got along well so they didn’t feel the need to get their so-called revenge on one another. There were those that did no matter who the opponent was which was a hard thing to understand as it was just part of the training. They couldn’t always win, that was the way how life was.

Unconsciously he started walking next to Shu, remembering the blushing part from before for a split second which made him rub the back of his neck. Trying to forget about it as this wasn’t how he usually was. “So… You did a good job back there. Sorry for underestimating you. That was my… bad.” He commented but at that moment the eyepatch got undone by the moving around he did, revealing the burning scar on his eye. Grabbing hold onto the piece of cloth before awkwardly smiling towards Shu as his eye was revealed. He still had some kind of vision in them but not much, the colour was also white-grey unlike his golden eye.

“Ah… I got this from a fight with one of the bullies. The nurse was too late to reduce the scarring so that’s why it’s like this.” He told Shu as it wasn’t something he should be disgusted by. It was a proper wound that indicated he survived something and got stronger out of it. Tying the patch tight again so it wouldn’t fall of another time. “Don’t worry too much about it.” He said with a grin. “They were assholes with no conscience so it’s better that they did it to me than to someone who was weaker than them. That would’ve ended badly.” Shrugging his shoulders lightly, already seeing the exit and the next competitors waiting for their queue.

As he heard the bells ring he let go of the girl and smiled at her kind heartedly. She knew it wasn’t anything horrible but she was a little upset he had apprehended her. She shook his hand with a good nature and as Shin starting walking their way Shu found himself walking toward Rei. He smiled brightly to the other before they silently started to walk in step together toward the edge of the ring.

He tilted his head wanting to say something to Rei but found himself blushing a little bit instead. He puffed out his cheeks trying to find something to say, anything to say. Luckily Rei broke the silence. Shu smiled softly, “Thank you….I know you don’t need to hear it from me but your amazing out there.” He said with a soft smile only for it to fade as the others eyepatch started to fall. He wanted to reach out and stop it from falling, wondering if there was something there he didn’t want them to see.

Too late, it had already fallen and the ugly burn scar that was there screamed at Shu. Sadness filled his heart and his own eye started to ache. Rei however, didn’t seem to phased by it. “You were bullied?” he asked looking up at the taller male. “I wouldn’t have ever guessed that you would have been targeted for bullying.” He spoke softly and then sighed a little. “I’m sorry that happened…can you still see through it?” he asked a hand absently rubbing at the scar on his wrist. An anxious habit of his apparently.

He felt like he was walking on eggshells. With his own scar he would have never thought to casually show it to anyone. Then again…it would ruin his entire mask if anyone found out why he was really here. “I wasn’t worrying about it. More of just…sad that it happened to you. You’re not that bad of a guy. There are a lot of really bad rumors around campus about you. I’m sorry…for believing them before actually meeting you. That was shallow of me.” He said softly as they came up on the other team that was about to enter. Shu kept his eyes down, worried that everyone in the audience had seen their little moment with one another in the alleyway.

Like he needed the entire upperclassman class to know that he was…well different. He looked up at Rei wondering why he had blushed so hard. It was a strange sight to see on someone so strong looking and capable. He wouldn’t have expected red cheeks from someone like Rei. Let alone a flustered look and a rushed sentence to try and keep the awkward moment away. He lightly brushed a hand through his hair that covered his left eye, a finger lightly trailing over the scar there. He wondered what Rei would think if he actually told him about it.

What was he thinking? It wasn’t like they had become good friends. Probably after today they would never talk to one another again. Rei didn’t hang out with people like Shu and Shu rarely hung out with anyone. He let his hand fall from his face realizing that making a friend or more was wishful thinking on his part.

“Ah, I wasn’t the one being bullied. One of my friends’ brother was but they couldn’t get any names out of him. So when I happened to catch them in the act, I couldn’t just let it pass by.” He corrected Shu politely as he didn’t want to be misunderstood. Not that he would be embarrassed about it, he just didn’t want people to form their opinions and just go ahead and make up lies about it which had happened anyway. It was annoying but after useless attempts to change people their minds due to their own blindness about the truth, he had given up. Staying true to himself and nobody else. If people liked him for that, they started to hang around him which happened with the class he spend the most time with. They protected one another but didn’t step into the personal bubble either, keeping a safe distance unless they wanted to form a closer bond with each other. It was a weird thing but it was nice.

At the mentioning of the rumours, he let out a long breath, huffing out all the air before taking new in. “Well, most of them are probably true. Like the one of having gotten into a fight with normal humans outside of the school territory. I only used my fists, nothing else. They were just weak, arrogant. They didn’t get any serious injuries either. Then the one of having gotten into a heated discussion with a professor is true too, we only yelled at each other though. The worst one… about me losing control and nearly killing someone… it happened. If they didn’t stop me I would’ve done so. I was locked up in my room for a month, several times a week the principal came to talk to me about what had happened.” He told the other without much thought into it as the school already got to know about it one way or another.

“So if I can live freely with those sins hanging onto me, why can’t you?” He commented as he glanced back to the younger one. His voice wasn’t mocking but more thoughtful as he didn’t mean any harm by it. “You must think I’m some kind of monster now don’t you?” His eyes were just the slightest bit sad as he said that. It was the truth. He was partially a monster from the inside out. Hence the reason why the students kept their distance from him as they knew about the outcomes of the Demon Spawn. All those who had received this power turned for the bad, known criminals. The reason why he kept his power a secret from his parents as they would be disappointed by it. So he trained his body instead to maintain the mask in front of them.

The moment they got into the base, his classmates all rooted for him as if they were one family. Making him roll his eyes and flick the middle finger which only made them laugh in return. It was just the way he was and they liked to mess around with him in a playful manner. But before he could go off they had to go to the nurse first at the back who would tend to their wounds. Some cuts were on his arms and legs but nothing too serious. Making a kissy face towards Shin as he acted like his girlfriend, only making Shin gag in return.

Shu instantly felt bad. He lightly slid his fingers into his pockets and he sighed, “Oh…you’re a good friend then.” He said softly about the bullying thing before they fell silent once more. He felt a little bad for even bringing up the rumors thing but he felt guilty for taking them into account before meeting Rei. It was..hard to interact with the older students anyway so he never thought he would be in a situation where he would be talking to Rei anyway. Specially not as a friend.

Shu had always figured some of the rumors were probably true but as Rei listeed them out he felt like he was hitting all the main ones. His eyes looked up at his partner for a moment with sad eyes. He couldn’t tell him he knew what it felt like to be locked away. However, in Shu’s case it was years. He blinked a few times before he sighed softly. “I don’t think you’re a monster. Monsters can’t blush like you can.” He said teasingly but he knew what Rei had said actually meant a lot to him.

Before they got to the base he gently touched his arm, “You’re not a monster. I don’t think you are…and whoever thinks so obviously doesn’t know you. I know what it feels like to be treated like something…despicable.” He let go of him and smiled a little. “I think you are a good guy Rei…even if others don’t think so.” He was cut off by the sound of cheering his eyes averting from Rei and a blush forming on his cheeks.

He quickly picked up his stride to get infront of Rei and the small crowd that was forming to congratulate him. Shu was never…in a winners circle before and he didn’t know what it felt like. He didn’t think the cheering was for him anyway. He moved to the nurses station shifting his sleeves to cover his fingers. He walked up to the nurse and smiled a little, the cut on his lip still slightly bleeding. “I just have this…nothing else. No need to examine me either.” He waved a hand his eyes scanning the crowded area. He didn’t want them to see, he didn’t want them to know.

He shifted anxiously as one of the nurses leaned down to examine his split lip and bruising cheek. He had been hit good with that ice. He knew he had another wound on his back from taking a mean fall but he wouldn’t have them doctor it. He knew basic first aid and would deal with it himself in the bathroom when he was alone. He didn’t know how he was going to manage that but he would make it work. She protested, wanted to see the rest of him and make sure he was alright but he just fought her trying to pull away from her.

“Please just, I can come to the office later just not right now.” He said softly to her trying not to cause a scene. Of course this would happen, he would get a new nurse who didn’t know his situation and would try and strip him of his only protection from the prying eyes of those around him. He felt like he was suffocating. He looked around him for any form of help but remembered, no one knew. He felt like he was floating aimlessly on an island surrounded by boats with no life jackets to throw to him. It took everything inside of him not to break down when she grabbed his jacket trying to pull it away from him.

Now that he got out of his battle mode, his sense of emotion also incredibly diminished as he didn’t need to be wary of anyone. It was a little odd but it helped him big time when he had to face some powerful opponents like before. It wasn’t an easy win as he didn’t come out without an injury. They actually did really well and if he had slipped up once more, it would’ve been a loss on their side. It was quite interesting to think about it that way as it never was unfair even though the power gap might’ve been clearly visible. The moment one would give up, they already lost the fight which was shown in the first two matches. It was a pity but it was the way it was. Nobody could control the mind of their partner or their own if their mentality was already bad to begin with. Therefore preparation was one of the main keys to win.

The way Shu talked to him about not being a monster he felt he was, he raised an eyebrow as he didn’t believe his ears. The guy who was hostile to him before had changed his mind. Not being able to stop a fluttering feeling from appearing in his stomach as if butterflies were flying in it without his permission. Ignoring it for the meantime as he didn’t think it could be true, perhaps it was just the heath of the moment. It should be like that or there was definitely something wrong with him. The guy wasn’t even his type to begin with.

The nurse however distracted him with her disinfecting fluid, making him hiss once it touched his skin as it hurt. No matter how many times he got injured, this part would never change. But it also made him remember that he was still alive and well. If he didn’t he would need to be examined closely. His eyes shifting over the medical equipment in case if someone really got hurt. Luckily it seemed that it wasn’t going to happen today. So less worried friends and family to deal with as they would rush to the school once they heard about it.

Rei however noticed the struggling of Shu who was sitting a bit further away. His own wounds were already tended to. He let out a sigh before moving to where the nurse and Shu were sitting, place a hand on the woman’s hand while smiling gently towards her direction. The woman had beautiful blonde hair with deep brown eyes, a rather petite body type yet still had some force in her arms. The woman looked up at Rei slightly confused. “I’ll take care of it. I’ll be using the nurse office then if you don’t mind.” He said in a smooth voice, making him seem more charismatic. The nurse, as if in a trance, nodded absentmindedly and gave her permission.

Telling Shin about it so the teacher wouldn’t suddenly be missing two students. Gesturing to Shu to follow him to the nurse’s office as he didn’t want the other to walk around with any possible bruises without doing anything about it. He didn’t ask about the reason behind the struggling as they all had their own problems. “So… What did you think about the match? Got a better feel on your abilities?” He asked out of mere curiosity.

Shu weakly groaned as the nurse pressed gauze against his lip only to throw her hands up in defeat when he wouldn’t let her see the rest of his upper body. She looked at him with pure annoyance thinking that it was simply a kid wanting to be hard and bulk up to authority. Shu was ready to protest again but Rei suddenly appeared out of no where touching the nurses hand with his own.

Shu blinked up to his savior with a look of confusion. Why had Rei come to his rescue? He watched the interaction with the nurse instantly feeling his stomach sink. Of course Rei was a ladies man, the way he talked to her just proved it. Shu hopped down from the nurses table and looked back at her as he followed Rei. A light scoff left his lips as he hadn’t thought he would have gotten out of that bind.

As they started to walk away from the other students Shu wanted to thank Rei but couldn’t find the words. He was still shocked that Rei had even helped him. When the other male started to speak it pulled Shu from his thoughts and he had to blink a few times before looking up at Rei. “Ah…I don’t think I feel better about them really. I think I’m not as afraid of them when it comes to hurting people. I was able to help you without burning you which is a big step for me.” He said softly sliding his hands into his pockets as they walked.

“You didn’t have to save me you know…She would have let me off if I annoyed her enough.” He laughed softly and then grew silent only to open his mouth and close it once more as if he was going to say something but didn’t know how to say it. Rei had saved him from everyone finding out his true self, but if he tended to Shu’s wounds then Rei would know.

He tilted his head a little letting the hair fall into his face, it wasn’t like Shu had a chance with this delinquent anyway. He wasn’t even his type! Shu never went after the bad boy type. Then again he couldn’t help but feel the bubbling of anxiety in the back of his mind as he started to wonder what Rei would say. He shook himself from his thoughts and forced himself to talk, “Thank you…for trusting me. It helped me overcome one of my own limitations and I couldn’t thank you enough for helping me feel…confident about myself and my abilities.” He smiled that smile he always had up to Rei but this time it was genuine. He couldn’t think of another way to say what he was trying to say, so this would have to do for now.

Walking next to Shu as weirdly relaxing as the other finally came to acknowledge him as something different than just a delinquent. The real question here however was why he was even happy about it as he didn’t even know the guy for so long. Nor had he talked to the male before until today so why was he relieved that the misunderstanding about him had managed to get away. It made his thoughts spin to the point of it going into an endless cycle if he didn’t start to think about something else.

When Shu mentioned that he wasn’t using his abilities better but instead was less afraid of them, he grinned widely as it was quite an achievement already to change a bit of the mind-set of the other into a more positive one. “Well, it’s a start, isn’t it?” He responded more cheerfully. The comment afterwards though made him laugh in response as he couldn’t believe what the other had just said to him. So annoying the hell out of people was his tactic to get out of troublesome situations. Well, it was one way to get out of things, he just didn’t think it would be used by Shu out of all the people as he doesn’t necessarily look the part.

Not saying much about it as it was not exactly his problem, not wanting to meddle in too much as he would feel annoyed by himself for doing so. When the guy spoke again, he hummed and nodded. “It wasn’t me who did it you know. You did it yourself. You should be more proud of what you can do instead of sulking about what you can’t. If you ever want to try something out, don’t hesitate to ask me. I’m free most of the time.” He offered Shu, being slightly taken aback by the smile he received from the other. His cheeks becoming slightly more pink than normal again. Honestly he could’ve just hit himself as his body wasn’t working the way he wanted to today.

Before he even realized it, they reached the nurse station which was a small building next to the school one. Going inside but nobody was currently present. Seeing a not laying on the table for anyone who would come inside that they were on a break and the others were still on the battlefield that was going on. “Would you mind me taking care of your back or would you rather do it by yourself? It isn’t an easy spot to reach though but it’s completely up to you.” He asked as he was getting the necessary stuff out of one of the cabins inside of the place.

That laugh. Shu’s eyes brightened as he heard a chuckle from his companion. It was unlike anything he had ever heard before and he felt his cheeks warm up. Rei was handsome and his voice was even more attractive. That laugh sounded like those bird calls when he was younger, like freedom. They seemed to actually be getting along and that felt amazing. He smiled brightly up to Rei as he spoke. “It is a start! I’m more than happy about it.” He said with a soft smile before they walked a little bit longer together. When Rei spoke again his eyes shifted away. He had complimented him and it felt more than good. It felt great to be treated as if he had actually done something right. And by himself at that.

“Thank you Rei. I promise if I ever wanna burn someone I’ll suggest burning you.” He chuckled a little at his own little joke as they walked into the building that led to the nurses station. Shu couldn’t help but notice that cute little blush that covered his cheeks again. It made him a little hopeful that maybe Rei wasn’t just a ladies man but possibly more?

He entered the nurses station, the action wiping his smile from his face. Of course they had to get here now of all times. He felt the anxiety coming to the surface again as his eyes shifted to the table. There was a sign that read that the nursing staff was out at the moment and to come back shortly. He heard shuffling from the other side of the room as Rei started to get out the proper things to clean his back.

Panic shot through his veins and he pulled the jacket closer to his body. “It’s…It’s not even that bad…honestly it probably doesn’t need to be doctored or anything. I don’t even think I’m bleeding!” he said backing up from Rei feeling his butt hit the table that sat behind him. He peered back at it and blinked a few times as he looked back to Rei. “You don’t have to do that…I would feel bad if you doctored it…I’m an adult I can get it. Its an inconvenience for you ins’t it?” He was trying to come up with any excuse to get out of taking his clothes off infront of Rei without really knowing his reaction to it. With the scars came the stories and with that came break downs. Shu wasn’t ready to expose himself like that to someone who probably didn’t even like him.
