I wrote this as an answer story to my entry for another BL Writer's Contest in this forum, the one with the theme Please Register/ Sign In, in order to see the links. for November 2016 (mine was titled "I'll Let You Know"). If you'd like, please read that one first before reading this one. Word count: a perfect 600~! :Dancing: Reveal hidden contents [table=width: 500, align: center] [tr] [td] Even when. This is a story about a love unrequited until the end. I was sickly as a child, so it wasn't surprising when I woke up in a hospital room after collapsing, having over exerted myself by sleeping too little as I was studying for college entrance exams. I remember how my mother pursed her lips as the doctor explained that I would have to rest for two years. I was grateful that my high school was kind enough to let me graduate, but there was nothing I could do but wait until I could start going to school. I was a freshman and he was a third year upperclassman. He was athletic and smart. He was funny and a natural leader. People flocked to him. Everybody loved him, even the professors. He was mesmerizing. Admittedly, I was no exception. I knew it was wrong and creepy, but I couldn't help wanting to see him, wanting to touch him, that I started following him around. I kept wondering what would've happened if I wasn't tied to my bed for two years. I could have gone to college on the same year as he did. We could have been friends, we could have been more. I shook my head to keep the thoughts away. There was just no use thinking about it. Sometimes, he would catch me staring at him. Always I looked away quickly, lowering my head as I fought the way my body tingled whenever he looked at me. It was unfair, I wanted to say, but it wasn't his fault. I was the wrong one. One time, while I was following him as inconspicuously as I could, I saw something... dreadful. I don't know why I thought that, but I was seized with so much jealousy that even as what I saw pained me, I continued watching, unable to look away. He was kissing someone, a friend of his from class. He held the other, my heart racing when his hands slid from his friend's arms to the other's waist. I stood frozen where I watched. He kissed his friend deeply when suddenly his eyes locked onto mine, a smirk forming on his lips as he thrust his tongue in his friend's mouth, watching me watch him. He knows, I realized. So I walked away, silently and as fast as I could. I didn't look back. I felt so ashamed that I refused to attend school until he graduated. I never saw him again after that. Forget him, I told myself, he's a story from long ago. He could even be married now. Yet as much as I tried, I couldn't. Even when I'm with other men, even in my dreams. "Everyone, make sure to wash your hands properly!" I reminded the children, and the little ones nodded their heads. I smiled. Even while being gay, I could be with children as a preschool teacher. There was a buzz and I rushed to meet the visitor. A man stood looking around, a cute girl beside him holding his hand. My eyes searched the father's face, only to find that it was him. He stared back, obviously recognizing me too. He visibly tensed, his Adam's apple bobbed as he swallowed. "I, uh, want to enroll my kid." "R-Right." I answered, turning my back on him. Calm down, I told myself, which proved futile when he spoke my name. How on earth did he know my name? I turned around, looked him in the eye. It was weird. He looked at me like... All wear and tear was perfect; the gallery was a hit, and within hours, pieces were being bought. People were transfixed with the items found in those dusty plains. Among the non-negoatiables were letters Professor Monsoon had found crinkled, brittle, but amazingly intact. Restoration and extensive meetings with linguistic meetings deciphered the love affair between two to three persons, one who is known to be Thaddeus, one speculated as Krager. Documents from Exhibit: ‘Promises Fulfilled-- Holes Full’ Yes hello, I receive your good tidings with tender heart. My writing comes along well; your mentor is my mentor now, and in [similar fashions] as yours. Your presence is deeply missed. We hope your campaign ends soon. I say we, because we are in a state of agreement. It is not the same without you. Awaiting response with flurry of excitement. Do not forget the memories which shape this present, Bonded, Thaddeus Greetings, My dearest, Thaddeus, imbued with as much charm and grace in that heart of yours as when I left the shrubbery. How thrilled I am to hear of your continued growth! I remember, those years back, sneaking you tablets only to shave them off again. We would cough up dust from burnt lungs. I ate the chalk, the grit thick on my tongue, from dyes and tastes of the earth around Herjomeion. You take to it well. Let Krag know he does good for you. I am currently stationed in the vistas. There are other delights in this world- intellectual, spiritual. I still bow my head and send blessings to you and he always. I turn you over in my head like wishing stones. But how I wish I could turn you over now. There is little a man can have, when all he wants, is gone from long distances. I attach pressed petals. . Meet me in dreams, ---- Repeat, [Krager]’s calluses are softened by my skin, he says. I do think that both of you have blemishes to count all the holes in our sky reaching rocks. They add character. You are not occupied enough. Think not of what is gone, but awaits you. You are of a ludicrous mind. [Krager] is large. He warms the beds. He warms the food. He warms us. Take that warmth with you. And the petals. They were crinkled to dust. I threw them in the fire. You will be protected. Forever, Thaddeus. [scrawled] I did see your dreams. They were blotchy, with chipped memories, and I walked amongst them. Them, that were so long ago. Thaddeus, If I am proven coward before you receive this letter, then read it, read who was once brave. I would very much like to produce a dowry, and sign the contracts, for you to be mine, in all senses, and devote myself to you. In short: I do not forget anything. "Every Part of You is a Reminder of why I Love You" Reveal hidden contents Light floods my eyes and drain the darkness. Laying beside me is my sunshine, although soundly asleep, he still brings a smile to my face. His features are soft when relaxed but tenses when awake. Propping myself on my elbows, I rest my head in my hands. Staring at his sleeping face was a rarity as I have always awoken late. At this time, the sun was peaking over the trees outside and a single ray of the honey colored sun shined itself onto him. It highlighted right above his eyebrows, revealing the faint lines where he would worry. Everyday was a struggle to get through when we could barely talk because of the time differences. I looked to his eyelids that fluttered when we first chatted in an online video chat room for the first time. Lower are the lips, from which would flow words of encouragement and advice, at first, to confessions of love and honesty. Those same lips I was unable to touch years ago, I never let be lonely again when we met. Reaching out, I tapped lightly on his dry lips and pushed at the soft flesh that we expressed our love through. Moving down, I shifted myself to prop on one arm. With the other free one, I lovingly laid on his chest to feel the rise and fall indicating his life that belonged to me and my own to him. It was reassuring that with the rhythm of his chest, his heart beat steadily and quietly while he slept. On other days, this tall man would hug me and I could feel the rapid pounding of his heart in my ear that in response made my eyes water. In my ventures, I reached to intertwine his hand around mine. The heat of his palm and the roughness of his hands were not so foreign to my own but were thousands of times more precious. I stared at his knuckles, callused and cracked. These same knuckles aided in writing me letters that I still keep as keepsakes to this day. Affection crowded my heart and I squeezed his hand for the calming properties that was himself. “What wrong, Babe?” His groggy voice carried through my head, registering the worry and glimpsing at the slight curiosity that lined his face that looked up at me. He’d been up on his feet for hours looking at cakes, fabrics, flowers and all sorts of wedding things. He thanked the waitress when she brought coffee and just held the cup, warming his hands and closing his eyes, enjoying the doing nothing but that. Someone sat across him, disturbing Matt’s peace. Frowning, he opened his eyes and stared at Dean. For a moment, old feelings of desire and love for this man filled Matt, before darker memories chased them away. “Hi” Dean said like nothing ever happened between them. “Hey” Matt answered. He could act the same. “So, how’ve you been?” Dean asked, smiling and looking as handsome as ever. “Good” “Heard you were getting married.” “In a few weeks” Matt said standing up, leaving a few bills on the table. Now if you’ll excuse me I need to do more wedding stuff. Dean reach out, grabbing Matt’s sleeve as he passed him. Matt looked down and for a second he thought he saw something in Dean’s eyes. Pain? Desperation? Desolation? But Dean blinked and the look was gone. Cold, hard eyes looked up at him as Dean asked “Do you love him, your husband to be?” “Of course” Matt answered. That was never a question. Dean released his sleeves and Matt left without looking back. ********** “You ok?” Gina, his best friend asked as she sat on Matt’s vacated seat. She waited in the car while Dean spoke with Matt. “Don’t know” Dean answered. Why did he even come back here? When he found out about Matt’s wedding, he just packed and came here with no plans at all except he wanted to see the only man he ever loved once more. “I’m sorry” Gina said. “Not just for now but for way back then. I know my part in breaking you up and I’m so, so sorry.” “What?” Dean looked up surprised. “Matt left me! He didn’t want me, that wasn’t your fault.” “Dean think back. You started having problems when I was pregnant. You paid more attention to me than Matt back then. That must’ve hurt him so.” Dean was about to deny that too, but then really thought about what happened those long years ago. His own sister bled to death when she had a miscarriage and he’s always carried guilt that he failed to care for her. When he found out about Gina’s pregnancy, he became overprotective. He remembers now how many dinners he’d missed, how in the late trimester of Gina’s pregnancy, Dean barely went home, so afraid something might happen. Even their last vacation, booked months before ended in a disaster. It was near the baby’s due date and Dean was so anxious he cut their trip short. By then Matt had been arguing less and less. He stopped being angry, stopped making dinners that weren’t being eaten, stopped scheduling outings that were always cancelled, and stopped talking to Dean altogether until he finally left. When the baby was born and Dean could think clearly, Matt was already gone. Looking back, Dean realized what it must have looked like to Matt. Spending all those hours with Gina, taking care of her like he was her husband. Matt would have thought they were having an affair, or worse that he fathered Gina’s child. He’d held love in his hands, but he failed that love. No matter that he realized this now, it’s too late. He can’t ever go back and change those long ago mistakes. The Prince & His Knight “Who on earth are you?” Arthur had stared at the man who had spoken, in disbelief. Not only was he NOT the princess Arthur had travelled far and wide to rescue, he was wearing a frilly indigo dress. Though regardless, Arthur found himself mesmerized at first sight by the man’s slight feminine features, from his plump, pink tinged cheeks to the well carved collar bones which protruded above the frills of the low cut dress. Of Course this had made Arthur drop his guard, and the man had pounced on the knight. It was then, He had noticed the crest on the sword the man carried, and realised the man was a knight too, of Zalor, a kingdom neighbouring his own of Zerlia. He had questioned the man, who had refused him any answers but after a swordfight, which the man lost due to his restricting gown, he had dejectedly explained. “Im Prince Gabriel Inkheart of Zalor, firstborn of the king and queen of Zalor and a knight of the royal court. The Princess, is my only sister. An year ago on her 16th birthday, the Dragon wrecked havoc on the castle and abducted her. My parents….They were absolutely terrified.Mourning the loss of their only daughter yet fearing anyone sent to rescue her would never return alive. Legends spoke of a Prince who would rescue the princess and thus, i, her brother and a prince, took the responsibility and set off to free my sister. After a grueling journey, i found her. Locked in this god forsaken tower, alone and terrified. I also discovered from her that the dragon that held her captive, had very poor sight. And then, it hit me. It would've been impossible for both of us to escape. But if i were to give my sister my clothing, and put on her dress, i could have fooled the dragon. Which i did. While my sister escaped in my attire, i took her place.” Gabriel had stood up and walked towards the large window Arthur had come through a while back. Looking out at the sight that greeted him, he had gasped. “The dragon...You…?” “Oh that? Yea, i slayed him.” Arthur had replied, grinning sheepishly. Gabriel had continued staring at him in wonder, before bowing his head. “I am eternally grateful.” Silence had once again ensued, before Arthur had gotten up and made his way towards Gabriel. Reaching his target, he had gotten on one knee, taking hold of the prince’s soft palm. “Your highness, long ago, a knight left his kingdom, keen to fulfil a prophecy bestowed upon him. He was to rescue a princess, and earn her heart. And this had given him purpose, to keep going no matter how many dangers he encountered. I understand, these circumstances aren't quite what either of us expected...But I believe we have met for a reason. So will you, Prince Gabriel, allow me to be your saviour, your knight in shining armor?” All the while Arthur had spoken, Gabriel’s blush had gotten progressively deeper. Then, Gabriel had let go of Arthur’s hand and using it to unsheath his sword, rested its blade lightly on Arthur’s shoulder. “Then from this moment forth, i bestow upon you, Arthur, Knight of Zerlia, the honour of having rescued the Prince of Zelor, and the title of the knight who shall lead me home.” Lifting his sword and sheathing it, Gabriel continued, “Now rise, my fellow knight and lead the way.” And as they had run out of the tower, hands intertwined, Arthur had felt his heart palpitating. Was it adrenaline for their journey to come? Or something more? Their eyes met and Gabriel laughed gleefully, emerald eyes twinkling. Arthur certainly prayed so. He checked the room temperature and adjusted the thermostat to warm the bedroom a bit more, he drew the curtains to let in a little more light, then fixed Jacob's pillows and covered him with another blanket. After checking him again John left the room and went downstairs to the kitchen to make some chamomile tea and get some saltines. Once done he took the tea tray back to the bedroom and place it on the bedside table. He loves watching him sleep, always had. It gave him a sense of peace, knowing he was safe and sound, within his reach and far away from the things that could hurt him. Here he could keep him out of harm’s way. The risk of exposure to damaging presences was minimal. This was a controlled environment where Jacob could stay calm and recover. Long gone were their childhood days, when everything seemed simpler and they could take long strolls in the park under the shade of the trees holding hands and enjoying the cool afternoon breeze, when all they had to worry about were school, chores and being kids. That carefree life was the stuff that made his memory map. They had lost contact when they were teens, Jacob and his family moved to the countryside due to his father’s job and they had to part ways. Nonetheless he never lost track of him; that is how he came to know that Jacob had been bullied nonstop throughout school because of the way he looked. Fragile and short of stature, thin and pale he attracted the attention of the bullies like bees to honey. He had been harassed until he dropped out of school and moved back to the city on his own, there John contacted him and offered him a job as his assistant to help him manage his house. Jacob was so happy to have found him and gladly took him up on his offer, which is how he slowly took charge of his life. John sat down next to the sleeping Jacob and brushed the fringe out of his eyes. He loves him so much. He gently caressed his cheek and whispered to him: - Good morning gorgeous! - John? – Asked Jacob groggily sitting up. – John! – exclaimed Jacob excitedly and hugged him like there was no tomorrow.
