Not me, not Haruhi, not anyone else.” His tone firmed, not with anger, but with certainty. “And whatever you choose… it won’t change where you belong.” There was a quiet weight behind his next words. “You’re part of this family. There are too many variables—too many traits that could surface.” He shrugged lightly. “But if the mother is healthy, the chances are good the baby will be healthy too. That’s what matters most. The only thing we 'do' know… is that the child would be part demon. That trait is strong. So strong that it doesn’t just disappear, no matter what other bloodlines are involved.” Silence settled again, heavier this time, but not uncomfortable. “…At some point,” Yumro said quietly, “Haruhi and I might have a baby. Not now. But someday.” He shifted slightly closer, his voice softening even more. “I just didn’t want you to be caught off guard.” Yumro reached out, placing his hand gently on top of the backpack—steadying it, and perhaps grounding Haru at the same time. “But listen to me,” he said, his tone warm and unwavering. “That won’t change anything between us.” He gave the bag a small, reassuring squeeze. “You’ll still be my first pup. My son.” There was no hesitation in his voice, no uncertainty—only truth. “I’ll always want you to be happy. To live your life the way 'you' choose.” He smiled faintly. “So follow your heart, Haru. Faint.” His fingers curled slightly, as if trying to grasp those old, intangible memories. “Now everything feels real.” A faint smile flickered across his face. “I’m happy… I really am.” The smile wavered. “But I’m also a little…” He trailed off, brows knitting together as he searched for the right word—one he hadn’t needed before, one that still felt unfamiliar on his tongue. “…anxious.” The admission came softly. “I feel… sad,” Shan went on, his voice more fragile now, “and strange… because Haru said he’s going away. And I can’t come with him.” His eyes drifted toward the ocean, the endless stretch of water mirroring the distance he couldn’t cross. “We’ve always been together,” he said. “Since Yukie brought me to him… to protect him. That’s what I was set for.” He swallowed lightly. “So it feels wrong, somehow, not being there. Like something’s out of place.” A breeze passed between them, stirring his hair, but he barely seemed to notice. “Haru told me to write to him,” Shan added, a small note of uncertainty creeping in. “And to take care of his collection while he’s gone.” His fingers tightened slightly at his sides. “I’ll do that. Of course I will.” He hesitated. “But… I think it’s going to feel lonely,” he admitted. “Not being able to talk to him whenever I want. Not knowing what he’s doing in that moment.” His gaze lowered, voice almost a whisper now. “In that way… having feelings kind of… sucks.” It was an honest, unpolished and raw. Shan was still new to all of this—the weight of emotions, the sharpness of them. Every feeling seemed stronger, like it hadn’t yet learned how to soften itself. The loneliness didn’t just sit quietly in his chest—it 'ached", deeply. Like something important was being pulled away. To him, it felt less like distance… and more like losing a part of himself. Like someone had taken his other half and placed it somewhere he couldn’t reach. Haruhi was still there—his mum, someone he cared about deeply, but it didn’t fill the same space. It didn’t quiet the same absence. For the first time since becoming more than a shadow, Shan understood that even something as precious as feeling could come with a kind of pain he had never known before.
