Then his stepmother let out a sharp, offended scoff, her face flushed with anger as she grabbed her daughter’s hand. “Unbelievable,” she snapped. “Absolutely unbelievable.” She turned abruptly, dragging the confused little girl with her through the crowd. Sora’s breathing was still uneven, his pulse loud in his ears. He barely caught the changed expression on his father’s face as Fang pulled him away His father’s expression had softened a little, with something heavy. Regret, maybe. Realization. Well whatever it had been it was too late. Years of absence couldn’t be fixed between them anymore. Sora didn’t have the energy for it The anger didn’t fade immediately. It sat heavy in his chest, tangled up with something bitter and familiar. Old disappointment. Eventhough he thought he had put all that behind him, in a part of him, they still mattered, and that was what he hated the most. He squeezed Fang’s hang tightly. Glad he had pulled him away from the situation. -------- Joining the others, Sora felt a wave of embarrassment wash over him as he caught the concerned looks on everyone’s faces. They were looking at him with pity, something he couldn’t stand. To him, it only highlighted how messy and exposed his family situation really was. When Asta’s mom pulled him into a hug, Sora nearly broke. The warmth of it was gentle, genuine, full of care which made his chest tighten with a frustrated ache. He couldn’t even remember the last time his biological mother had held him like that… if she ever really had. But Asta’s mom had always been kind, always affectionate. In some quiet, unspoken way, she had come to feel like the closest thing he had to a mother. He dipped his head into the crook of her shoulder as they hugged. “I’m fine,” he said softly. “I was just surprised seeing them so suddenly. Sorry you had to see that. It’s really fine.” He appreciated the concern, he really did—but he didn’t want to be treated like something fragile. If anything, he felt grateful to Fang for cutting through the tension by casually ruffling his hair. “Who’s driving first?” “It’s a four-hour drive,” Leon said, glancing toward Fang. “I can take the first two, then we’ll switch somewhere for a break.” Sora didn’t have a driver’s license… at least, not for a car. The thought made him smirk faintly to himself, though he kept it carefully hidden from Fang. It was a welcome distraction. He didn’t want his mood dragging the group down, so he forced himself to act normal. Even if, underneath, he felt a tangled mix of anger, sadness, and bitterness he couldn’t quite shake. In the car, Leon and Fang took the front seats for the extra legroom, while Asta and Sora sat in the back. They’d changed out of their graduation gowns. Sora now wore light shorts that ended just above his knees and a dark blue T-shirt with a bold band logo across the front. His hair was tied up and back to keep cool; even with the AC running, the air felt warm. With his piercings fully visible, he looked completely different—almost unrecognizable to anyone who didn’t know him well. Leon had definitely noticed. After they’d changed, he’d taken a second glance at Sora, surprised. He’d always thought of him as quiet, studious—someone who blended easily into the background. But now? Now Sora looked… different. Edgier. Almost like a delinquent. Leon had glanced at Fang, expecting some reaction, but Fang didn’t give much reaction. Of course he hadn’t, he’d likely seen this side of Sora before. They’d been together for two years, after all. Still, it shifted something in Leon’s perspective. He’d often wondered what Fang saw in Sora, beyond his firm personality and sharp tongue. Fang had never lacked attention, plenty of striking supernatural beings had shown interest in the usually distant werewolf. Leon had assumed Fang had a “type.” But seeing Sora like this made him reconsider. There was more to him than met the eye—layers Leon hadn’t noticed before. And strangely enough, this version of Sora seemed to fit him better. No one expected Fang to be much of a talker. Asta, on the other hand, filled the car with easy, bubbling conversation. He and Sora chatted in the back, while Leon chimed in now and then, mostly focused on the road as he listened to Asta’s excited plans for the trip. By the two-hour mark, everyone was ready to stretch their legs. Leon pulled into a gas station and parked. Stepping out, he groaned and stretched, rolling his shoulders to get the blood flowing again. Then he glanced toward Asta. “If you need anything, that looks like a decent-sized convenience store,” he said, jerking a thumb over his shoulder. “I’m going to grab a few things. What about you guys?” Sora shook his head. “Nah, I’m good. I’ve still got plenty to drink, and I’m not really hungry.” He shoved his hands into his pockets. “I’ll just stay out here and stretch.” Once Leon headed inside, along with anyone else who wanted to go. Sora leaned back against the car. Tilting his head, he rested it against the warm metal roof, letting the sunlight fall across his face. He closed his eyes, letting the quiet moment settle over him. He didn’t want to think about what had happened at the graduation ceremony, but that wasn’t really his choice. The memory pressed heavy against his chest. He told himself it didn’t matter, that 'they' didn’t matter. But somewhere deeper down, something more instinctive refused to let it go. Sora wasn’t cold-hearted. He just acted like he was. Because giving everything to people who never truly acknowledged him.. that was exhausting. (Inside the store) Inside the store, Leon cast a glance out the window toward the parking lot. It wasn’t hard to notice that something about Sora felt… off. Even without knowing him that well, Leon could tell. He just hoped it wouldn’t affect the trip. Asta had been looking forward to this for weeks, so had Leon, if he was being honest. He didn’t want anything dampening the mood, especially not when this was their first trip together. Even if it meant sharing the time instead of having Asta to himself. “So…” Leon began, breaking the silence as he and Asta stood in front of a wall lined with snacks, scanning the options. “I was kind of surprised seeing change Sora earlier,” he admitted. “The piercings, I mean. There are a lot of them. I don’t know how I never noticed before. I guess with his hair down it makes sense, but still…” He trailed off, frowning slightly as he tried to put the feeling into words. “It just felt like his whole vibe did a complete one-eighty. Before, he seemed so… average, I guess. Easy to overlook.” Leon rubbed the back of his neck, then gave a small shrug. “But honestly, I’m already getting used to it. It actually suits him.” He hesitated for a moment, choosing his words carefully. “It’s like his outside finally matches his personality.” The thought of what had happened earlier lingered at the back of his mind, unspoken. Leon wanted to ask about it. About the tension at the family situation, but he held himself back. It wasn’t his place to pry into something that personal.
