It’s About the Moment ( Private )

Tired and nearly asleep, Wren sunk deeper into the worn car seat and lazily watched the passing scenery while they moved through traffic. Everyone inside the vehicle had fallen silent except for Madison who's attention was divided between driving and speaking on the phone. From the moment the taller man had started to justify himself to the woman on the other side of the line Wren abandoned hope that his friend would be free to later drive him again.

On the back seat both Sean and Grant openly displayed their annoyance at having to suffer through another quarrel between Madison and his girlfriend. While Sean only looked out the window with an expression of profound boredom, Grant made faces and small noises in reaction to everything being said.

However it wasn't long before the car slowed to a halt in front of a building complex and Madison motioned frantically for both to step out. Any other day they would open the gate and drive closer but Maddie was in too much of a hurry for that. Sean offered a quiet goodbye before he and Grant headed towards a small house that could easily be overlooked among the bigger buildings and Wren answered him with a incoherent mutter, by then drifting off.

It was another half hour before Wren arrived home too and he was thankful for the nap he'd squeezed into that time. He was exhausted, a weeks worth of insufficient sleep catching up to him, but as soon as he was alone and remembered the man he would soon meet in the city he smiled softly to himself.

The old and torn clothes he'd worn having known he'd end up covered in dirt were taken off with on occasional quiet huff and scattered across the floor as he walked to the bathroom. The apartment hadn't been heated while all it's occupants were away and Wren hurried to get in the shower though there was not much warm water available either. Shivering, he cursed at his roommate who'd been the one to pick both their apartment and car and, it seemed to him, had gone out of his way to find something unappealing and decrepit in both cases. The water still felt pleasant on his skin however and a few minutes was all he needed to wash away the dirt.

Dressing himself in a fresh change of clothes as well as a thick jacket to keep warm, Wren hurried outside and down the street, knowing he had a long way to walk now that Maddie had gone off with the car, forgetting the agreement they had for that evening. He walked with his gaze slightly downcast and features set in an unfriendly expression but there was nothing upsetting him, rather this was how he'd grown accustomed to presenting himself in front of people to keep them away, all but one who easily made him smile.

Time always seemed to slip away from a person when faced with a canvas. Char had been there for who knew how long, placing strok after strok of paint on his canvas while listening to music with a pair of headphones and his phone. The calm and near silence of the room could be too calming, so the light destraction helped to pass the time. The only thing that would draw him away from his focused gate was the voice of his instructor.

”Alright everyone, let’s call it a day. We’ll pick up on the second layer next week. Don’t forget to bring your smaller flat brushes with you. See you next week.”

With a content sigh Char would begin cleaning, placing his canvas, apron, and medium in his assigned locker and cleaned his brushes. The final class for the day. It felt great to finally relax and ease away from art for a moment. And what he would do with his free time only made it more excited to leave. Saying his goodbyes he would leave the art building, making his usual route around his college campus right to his dorm. Since he had some time, he would place his other materials away and get a quick shower to get rid of the turpenoid smell. Once he threw on fresh clothes he would leave to get to his car and drive off. Traffic would be a little troublesome, but he knew how to make good time. This little place that this person and himself met as much as they could. This man that at first filled him with fear but now gave him such a warm feeling in his chest. Once he was able to park he would head into to small corner café and grab their usual table. He couldn’t wait to see Wren again. After being so busy, the pair wanted to catch up. And the crossdresser surly couldn’t wait to meet him again.

Having spent his childhood and teenage years in an unwelcoming, run down house, Wren could cope with the lack of space and poor conditions in their apartment. What he had an issue with however was it's impractical location, far away from any place he cared to visit. He was to meet his friend at their usual hang out which was close to the city center, however his home was on the outskirts and it became dark out by the time he arrived.

He searched for the other man with his gaze but found no trace of him yet and was glad to know he wasn't late. The two always met outside and waited for one another unless one was taking a very long time as Wren once had in the past.

After a couple of minutes passed, he started to walk a short distance up and down the street but then settled down and leaned against the nearest building. He felt strange, both elated and nervous to see his friend again after a long while apart, but that was nothing new.

  • 2 weeks later...

After grabbing their usual table the crossdresser would leave to grab something from his car. In the midst of being away from his friend for so long he decided to make him a little something. He could recall going through an old sketchbook one day to find a sketch of Wren that looked rather interesting to him. He took the sketch and went over it to make a clean and more des taules piece of it, big enough to keep in a small frame or page of a book. Once he grabbed his handmade gift he would wait in front of the café and scan for his friend.

After ten minutes had passed Char did began to worry. He wondered if Wren had gone into the building, or went off all together. The very thought made him shift in place moving to the corners if he had missed him. And when he did he saw his friend leaned against the building next to the café. After that he would dash right to Wren’s side and wrapped his arms around him.” Wren! It’s been so long!”

  • 3 months later...

Wren wondered what was keeping his friend but before he could begin to worry the busy day caught up with him and his thoughts strayed. The building behind him supported his weight and he gradually relaxed against the wall, awake but paying little attention to the world around him until he heard his friend approach. The crossdresser's voice shook him right out of his sleepy haze and he met him with a broad smile.

-"I've missed you." Wren spoke softly and pressed the other against his chest, forgetting himself. He soon loosened his grip however and took a step back, only his hand lingered on his friend's shoulder, reluctant to separate from him altogether.

-"For a moment I thought you were too busy to come." Wren admitted, evidently glad that he'd been wrong and started to slowly walk towards the cafe, lightly leading the other man along.

Char couldn’t remember when he had gotten such a friendly and warm embrace. For the moment he was simply enjoying the contact, feeling Wren pulling back he did however feel the slightest bit of sadness. He truly did miss the other man and he felt that he could get just a few more moments of the embrace. But seeing Wren was more than enough. Being lead back into the café he would hold on to the framed piece he had brought.

“For a moment I thought you were too busy to come.”

“My nights have been getting pretty free as of late.” Char replied as they walked inside of the building.” Sorrybif I worried you. I wanted to make sure that my lastest piece was really in the frame.” The crossdresser showed Wren the drawing of himself in action, in mid delivery of a punch.” I hope you like it. Took me awhile to finish.”

Wren blushed wildly upon seeing the picture and didn't know what emotion to show, let alone what to say but in the end he put of a self conscious smile. This wasn't the first drawing of himself he'd seen but it had been ages since the other man had used him as subject matter, as far as he knew. Wren was flattered but also caught off guard, shy and many other things that were unlike him. The crossdresser had a way of bringing out aspects of Wren that staid buried deep inside when he was with anyone else and even by himself.

-"Of course I like it... I don't think I've ever seen you make something that looks bad." He complimented the other man wholeheartedly and gave him a broader, genuine smile, though he still looked flustered. He missed drawing together with his friend as well but refrained from saying that out loud, afraid it might sound like he was set on winning more of the other man's time. Even months spent with the crossdresser wouldn't be too much for him, but since they'd chosen different paths after high school, Wren had started to feel out of place beside the smaller male and guilty for keeping him away from people who better suited him.

-"How have you been?" He asked as they made it to one of the tables they often picked, aiming to distract himself from his thoughts.
