I was so sad when i heard earthquake and tsunami killed many people in Japan. Of course i pray and give some donation for them. As a person who admire Nihon no Kuni so much, i wanna share a few info with you all.

The Japanese National Police Agency has confirmed 13,219 deaths,4,742 injured, and 14,274 people missing across eighteen prefectures, as well as over 125,000 buildings damaged or destroyed.

The earthquake and tsunami caused extensive and severe structural damage in Japan, including heavy damage to roads and railways as well as fires in many areas, and a dam collapse. Around 4.4 million households in northeastern Japan were left without electricity and 1.5 million without water. Many electrical generators were taken down, and at least three nuclear reactors suffered explosions due to hydrogen gas that had built up within their outer containment buildings after cooling system failure.

Earthquake

One minute before the earthquake was felt in Tokyo, the Earthquake Early Warning system, which includes more than 1,000 seismometers in Japan, sent out warnings of impending strong shaking to millions. The early warning is believed by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) to have saved many lives.

Aftershock

Japan experienced over 900 aftershocks since the earthquake with about 60 being over 6.0 M and three over 7.0 M. A 7.7 M and a 7.9 M quake occurred on March 11 and the third one on 7 April 7 2011, with a disputed magnitude. Its epicenter was underwater, 66 km (41 mi) off the coast of Sendai. The Japan Meteorological Agency assigned a magnitude of 7.4, while the U.S. Geological Survey lowered it to 7.1. At least four people were killed, and electricity was cut off across much of northern Japan including the loss of external power to Higashidori Nuclear Power Plant and Rokkasho Reprocessing Plant.

Tsunami

The earthquake which was caused by 5 to 8 meters upthrust on 180-km wide seabed at 60 km offshore from the east coast of Tōhokuresulted in a major tsunami which brought destruction along the Pacific coastline of Japan's northern islands and resulted in the loss of thousands of lives and devastated entire towns. The tsunami propagated across the Pacific, and warnings were issued and evacuations carried out.

In many countries bordering the Pacific, including the entire Pacific coast of North and South America from Alaska to Chile; however, while the tsunami was felt in many of these places, it caused only relatively minor effects. Chile's section of Pacific coast is one of the furthest from Japan, at about 17,000 km (11,000 mi) away, but still was struck by tsunami waves 2 m (6.6 ft) high.A wave height of 37.9 meters (124 ft) was estimated at Tarō, Iwate.

Like the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, the damage by surging water, though much more localized, was far more deadly and destructive than the actual quake. There were reports of entire towns destroyed from tsunami-hit areas in Japan, including 9,500 missing in Minamisanriku; one thousand bodies had been recovered in the town by 14 March 2011.

In the immediate aftermath of the calamity, at least 1.5 million households were reported to have lost access to water supplies. By 21 March 2011, this number fell to 1.04 million

World involvement

As of April 5, 2011 over $1 billion had been donated to Japan's relief effort, but little of that money is thought to have reached the earthquake and tsunami victims.

Japan received messages of condolence and offers of assistance from a range of international leaders. According to Japan's foreign ministry On 19 March 2011, 128 countries and 33 international organizations had offered assistance to Japan

In many countries, both government and private aid campaigns have been organized to offer money and support to the victims and general populace of Japan. Social buying sites have launched on-line campaigns in which several million dollars were raised for relief organizations working in Japan. The Japanese Red Cross announced two weeks after the quake that it had received $490 million in donations in response to the disaster. The American Red Cross said that it had received $120 million in donations from the US public. The Singapore Red Cross and Japan Association said that, as of 31 March 2011, residents of Singapore had donated S$ 3.15 million for disaster relief.

Humanitarian response

*Lady Gaga has raised $1.5 million from the selling of the charity bracelet she designed.

*Shakira donated time and effort to strategize a relief-fund for Japan, and donated an unknown amount directly to Japan. She also included her 2001 hit Whenever, Wherever on Songs for Japan.

*Jackie Chan raised over $3 million to Japan at a charity concert in Hong Kong. The money will be donated to the Salvation Army to help deliver emergency relief supplies to victims of the earthquake.

to note that, because of damage done to paper mills in the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake (Higashi Nihon Daishinsai) disaster, both paper and ink are now in short supply. In particular, the Ishinomaki and Iwanuma mills in Miyagi Prefecture and the Nakoso mill in Fukushima Prefecture are out of commission. She characterized the mill as a "total loss."

She offered her prayers for the safety of the workers at the mills.

Yamane-sensei noted that this is affecting books slated for an April 5 release, including her own Finder no Netsujō. In a follow-up Tweet, she encouraged her followers to buy new books from stores if they can find them.

An earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale hit the sea near Miyagi Prefecture in northeastern Japan Thursday evening (7th April 2011). Authorities issued a tsunami warning, but later lifted it.

The tremor caused widespread blackouts in affected areas. But several nuclear plants were shut down in case the tragedy of Fukushima was repeated.

Less than a month later, another strong quake hit the island country.

The earthquake's epicentre was about 40 km under the sea off the coast of Miyagi prefecture.

The tremor caused motorways to be closed and has been classified by the Japanese Meteorological Agency as an aftershock of the huge quake on March 11th that devastated much of the area.

Official from Meteorological Agency, said, "After the earthquake occurred a tsunami alert was issued for Miyagi, Fukushima, Ibaraki and Iwate. However we later expected there would be no tsunamis and so these alerts and advisories were lifted. Although these alerts and advisories have been lifted, we would like to urge extra caution."

As the nuclear crisis of the Fukushima plant remains unsolved, officials took precautionary measures this time.

Official, Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, said, "The Higashidori nuclear power plant of the Tohoku Electric Power Co, Onagawa nuclear plant, Fukushima Daiichi and Daini plants have been stopped due to the earthquake which just occurred."

Japan said nuclear power plants in the northeast of the country were safe following the major aftershock.

Officials said there were no abnormalities in radiation levels around Onagawa nuclear power plant, where fuel rods are being cooled with just one outside power source.

The situation at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi remains stable. The Tokyo Electric Power Company said engineers, who sealed a leak this week that had allowed highly radioactive water into the sea, are pumping nitrogen into one reactor to prevent the risk of a hydrogen gas explosion. They plan on starting the process in another two reactors.

There were no serious injuries reported in the aftershock, but power cuts were widespread in affected areas.

.. Yup. we can only pray for them, but deep in heart, i wish i could go there, helping 'em.

.. Indeed, when Mother Nature is angry, nobody can stop her. But we can alarm ourselves when she gonna be angry. (the Earthquake Early Warning system really help us).

Here is a news from BBC on April 12 2011.

Ayako Matsumoto, saleswoman, Gunma said,

"I have also been following international media, and I feel there is more information presented in the world media than in our own press.

Things are relatively normal here in Gunma, but there have been a lot of aftershocks. They have been occurring every 15 to 30 minutes since Monday - it's pretty scary.

We may be some 200km (120 miles) from Fukushima but the nuclear incident is worrying. The problem with radiation is that it is invisible, so you don't know where it is."

  • 3 years later...

It's sad to see that nature's fury, many people are dead and they must build their houses. But they are helped by the others country and this is beauty of humanity. We'll remember them and our thoughts are with them....

It is easier to rebuild than to forget
