The Sapporo Snow Festival, one of Japan's largest winter events, attracts a growing number of visitors from everywhere. More than 2 millions visitors has held this year's festival which ende last February 11th 2013.

People come to Sapporo to see a large number of splendid snow statues and ice sculptures which line Odori Park, the grounds at Community Dome Tsudome, and the main street in Susukino. The main site is the Odori Site in Sapporo's centrally located 1.5 kilometer long Odori Park. The festival's famous large snow sculptures, some measuring more than 25 meters wide and 15 meters high, are exhibited there.

The first Yuki Matsuri began in 1950, a group of 6 highschoolers built six snow statues in Odori Park. In 1955, the Japan Self-Defense Forces from the nearby Makomanai base joined in and built the first massive snow sculptures.Several snow festivals existed in Sapporo prior to the Sapporo Snow Festival, however, all of these were suspended during World War II
