It felt strangely far away compared to the warmth between them. Yumro exhaled slowly. “We’re all going to miss you when you leave,” he continued. “Every single day. I’m not against you traveling—I know it’s something you need. Something you’ve chosen.” A faint, conflicted smile tugged at his lips. “But that doesn’t mean I’m happy to see you go.” His arm tightened again, protective, reluctant. “I trust you. That’s why I’m letting you make this decision.” His voice softened, almost catching. “But I don’t want you to drift too far from us either. You don’t have to be ‘pack’ if you don’t want to.” He gave a small, breathy huff. “But you’re still family. That doesn’t change.” He nudged Haru lightly. “And don’t just call Haruhi and Shan,” he added. “I want to hear from you too. Messages, visits—whatever you can manage. Just… don’t disappear on us.” Yumro pulled him closer then, holding him the way he used to back home—like Haru was smaller, like the world wasn’t so big yet. Out here, in the thick darkness of the jungle, with the night pressing in on all sides, it almost felt like nothing had changed at all. --------------------- Shan frowned slightly, his brows knitting together as Haruhi’s words turned over and over in his mind. 'Finding out his feelings.' He didn’t really understand what that meant—how you could not already know something like that. Shan knew exactly how he felt about Haru. To him, Haru wasn’t just important—he was everything. His favorite person in the world. The one he always looked for first, the one he trusted without question. Being near him felt natural, easy… right. There was no confusion in that. He and Haru wasn’t like Haruhi and Yumro. Shan didn’t meant for marriage. It didn’t mean them being 'mates'. That was something else entirely—something bigger, deeper, and… different. Shan didn’t feel that. At least, he didn’t think he did. Shadows like him weren’t meant for things like that. They didn’t build families. They didn’t fall in love. They didn’t belong anywhere long enough for something like that to take root. That was just the way it was—simple, certain, unchangeable. …Or at least, it used to be. Now, sitting here, with Haruhi’s arms around him and the steady warmth of his presence anchoring him in place, that certainty didn’t feel quite as solid anymore. Somehow, without him noticing when it started, he 'did' have a family now. And that made everything more complicated. Shan shook his head lightly, still trying to make sense of it all. “I don’t really get it, Mum,” he admitted, his voice quiet but honest. “I already know how I feel.” He hesitated, searching for the right words, then gave a small shrug. “But… if you think there’s more to figure out, I guess it’s worth trying.” A faint, uncertain smile tugged at his lips. “I mean… I am kind of curious.” His arms tightened slightly around him as he returned the hug. “And at least I won’t be alone while I figure it out.” They stayed like that for a while, neither of them rushing to move. The world around them slowly dimmed as the sun slipped below the horizon, painting the sky in fading shades of red, then violet, then deepening blue. The sound of the ocean softened into a distant hush, blending with the quiet rhythm of the evening. Bit by bit, the light disappeared until the sea was little more than a dark, endless shape stretching into the night. Only then did they finally pull apart. With one last glance toward the water, they rose and made their way back to the cabin, side by side, letting the darkness settle around them as they walked.
