Kaito had been half-buried in a rack of shirts when he heard Asher's voice, that low, even tone that always managed to sound like both a statement and a question. He glanced over his shoulder, the corner of his mouth curling when he caught sight of Asher standing there, jeans draped neatly over one arm like a soldier trying to look natural in a civilian world. Kaito arched an eyebrow, turning fully to face him. "Decent? Careful, that almost sounded like a compliment." He tilted his head, pretending to weigh the words. “Next thing I know, you'll be asking me for fashion advice.” The tease was light, but the warmth behind it was real , a small spark against the dull hum of the day. He could tell Asher wasn't comfortable here; the way he held himself gave it away, all quiet control and alert eyes that never really rested. Kaito took a slow breath, watching him for a moment longer than he meant to. There was something in the way Asher's shoulders moved, the restraint, the weight that made Kaito's chest tighten unexpectedly. Not pity. Just...recognition. He walked over, holding up a shirt that was somewhere between deep burgundy and rust. "Okay, verdict time. Too much color for you, or do we risk shocking your system with something that isn't grayscale?" He stuffed his hand in his pockets, the grin fading to something more thoughtful. "You don't always have to be on guard. I mean, I know you probably will be — you're built that way — but still." His tone turned wry. "You can take five minutes off from being the alpha." There was a heartbeat of silence, not heavy, just quiet, before Kaito looked back up at him with that familiar, crooked half-smile. "Come on, big guy. Help me pick a jacket before you start reorganizing the store by color and size" he said quickly, changing the subject, wanting to finish with the shopping since Asher wasn't able to relax. He turned back towards the rows of fabric, the thought flickering unspoken through his mind as he brushed a sleeve between his fingers: You don't even see it, do you, Asher? How human you look when you're trying not to be. Kaito took the clothes that he decided to buy and moved to the cashier ready to pay for them.
