  3. (I just haft to comment on this XD) Noah barely managed to keep a straight face at Nathan’s choice of words. “No, not at work~well, not the first few times,” he said, his voice laced with mock innocence. He threw Nathan a wink, clearly waiting for him to catch on. Joy was already snickering, having picked up on the innuendo instantly. --------------- Noah’s fork hovered above his plate, the warmth from the candles soft against his skin, but there was a slight tension still curled under his ribs like a muscle half-flexed. He kept smiling, kept sipping at his wine, but Frances’ words were still ringing somewhere in the back of his mind—even the ones he didn’t fully understand. Il est aveugle, ce Nathan. He hadn’t caught every word, but aveugle was enough. Blind. The tone? Enough. But Adam… Adam had gone nuclear in the best possible way. Noah didn’t know what he’d expected—maybe some awkward laughs, someone deflecting the comment or politely changing the subject. But Adam had cut through the tension with a scalpel and handed Frances his own ego, gift-wrapped and bloody. It had shaken Noah, more than he expected, not because he was afraid—but because Adam had acted quickly and stood up for him. His eyes flicked to Joy across the table. That unreadable face, sharp eyes watching him like a hawk but not with malice. Curiosity, maybe. Or that big brother instinct Nathan had mentioned once. Noah had hoped to win atleast him over. When Nathan returned and sat beside him, brushing his arm in that small, unconscious way that said I’m here, we’re good, Noah finally let himself breathe a little deeper. He reached under the table and gave Nathan’s hand a small squeeze. Just to ground himself. The desserts were out now. He hadn’t helped with those. He’d been too busy adjusting forks like a man about to meet his in-laws. But Nathan had gone above and beyond—again. The apple pie smelled divine, cinnamon-heavy, with a golden crust that promised flaky goodness. Noah took a bite, let it melt on his tongue, and leaned back in his seat. He looked over at Adam and mouthed a quiet thank you. Adam just raised his eyebrows like it was nothing, then stole a cookie from the dessert tray with all the stealth of a raccoon. Joy hadn’t stopped watching Noah. Not even as dessert was passed around, not even as Frances shrank into his own silk shirt like a wilting flower. Noah didn’t grandstand. Didn’t defend himself with a temper. Didn’t try to prove anything. He’d just… stayed present. Joy respected that more than he could say. He took a long sip of his wine—he was feeling the warmth now, a good, slow kind of burn—and leaned back in his seat, full and finally, finally, a little more at ease. Nathan had brought home a man who could handle himself, and not with fists or fake smiles, but with quiet confidence. Hell, Noah didn’t even need to say much—his loyalty showed in the way he looked at Nathan, like that guy was his whole damn North Star. Joy would still keep an eye on things. That was who he was. But tonight..Noah had earned a temporary badge of trust. He glanced at Adam, still smug from his verbal beatdown of Frances. Joy chuckled and leaned over slightly. “you wasn’t kidding about that emotional combat license,” he said under his breath. “That was brutal.” Adam grinned. “I only use it for good. Unless someone tries to steal my playlist or insult the turkey.” Joy snorted, shaking his head, then let his gaze wander across the table again—at Nathan laughing with someone, at Noah wiping apple pie crumbs from the side of his mouth, at the candles casting gold along wine glasses. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d sat at a table that felt like this. He’d been to fancier dinners. Bigger parties. But this? This was way better and felt much more real. It reminded him why he’d come. Because of family—chosen family— the one who deserved to be seen, protected, celebrated. And damn it, Nathan deserved a good one too. Adam was on his second helping of pie and his third mental victory lap. He hadn’t planned to go full scorched earth on Frances tonight, but the smug bastard had earned it. Watching Noah shrink a little every time Frances opened his mouth had lit something in Adam’s chest—a kind of fire he usually reserved for terrible Yelp reviews and white wine drinkers who didn’t tip. Noah usally didn't take such things kindy either and could hold him own damn well. But he could tell Noah was holding himself back like a champ for Nathan’s sake. No fuss, no drama. Adam hadn't minded being the bad guy and protect his buddy. He glanced across the table where Noah and Nathan were quietly leaning into each other now, eventhough they spoke to others. Adam gave it two months before they started finishing each other’s sentences and adopting a rescue... well they already had London the cat so maybe that counted. He took a sip of his drink and caught Joy watching him with something like amusement. Oh yeah, Adam had seen that military guy assessing Noah like he was an intel report. But now Joy looked relaxed. Like maybe the test had been passed. “You know,” Adam said to Joy, licking a bit of pie filling off his spoon, “I was half-convinced you were going to interrogate Noah with a spotlight and a list of trick questions.” Joy grinned. “Wasn’t far off.” “Well,” Adam said, “he passed. So I’d say that’s a win for team Functional Adult Relationships.” Joy raised his glass again. “Cheers to that.” Adam clinked his glass back, then looked around at the table again. The food. The people. The slow, humming joy of a good holiday with good souls. It wasn’t perfect. It wasn’t flawless. But it felt right. And as far as Adam was concerned, that was the best kind of Christmas you could ask for. The evening had softened into a golden lull the kind that came with full bellies, mellow music, and drinks that slid warm and smooth down the throat. The apartment glowed in that candlelit, post-dinner way, with soft laughter weaving through pockets of conversation. People had drifted from the table to sink into couches or lean by the windows, plates scraped clean and dessert forks resting lazily on napkins. Joy had gone quiet, settled into one end of the couch, a third glass of wine in hand, his legs stretched out comfortably as he listened to Adam animatedly explain the hierarchy of New York wine snobs. Noah sat nearby, curled against one of the oversized throw pillows. The tension from earlier had faded, even Frances had grown quiet—not quite friendly, but no longer poking at him with barbed compliments. It was… nice. Peaceful, even. Until Frances cleared his throat. He stood near the fireplace, glass of water held delicately, eyes drifting over the garlands and ornaments strung along the mantle. His voice was light—too light. “These,” he said, gesturing vaguely at the handmade decorations—crooked paper stars, glitter-splattered pinecones, and some faded red felt ornaments strung up with uneven thread—“they’re… charming. I mean, quaint. A very rustic vibe.” Noah looked up slowly. Frances didn’t stop there. Of course not. “They remind me of something my baby cousin made when he was four. You know, the kind of thing you keep out of guilt but never actually display. But it’s sweet. Sentimental. A bit… dusty, though, isn’t it?” He smiled over his glass, tilting his head at Noah. “Did you find these in a thrift shop or… did you make them yourself?” The room quieted, just a little. The kind of silence that gathers when people aren’t sure if they should say something or not. Joy shifted in his seat. And Adam, standing nearby with a cookie halfway to his mouth, paused and gave Frances a look like he was trying to decide whether to respond or just throw the cookie at him. Noah didn’t look embarrassed. Or angry. He just sat up a little straighter. He let the pause stretch, just long enough to let Frances feel his own words hanging in the air, brittle and exposed. Then Noah said, calmly and clearly, “Actually, Nathan made those.” Frances blinked. “They’re from when he was a kid,” Noah continued, his voice soft but unshakable. “The stars, the pinecones, even that weird glitter snowman with only one eye? He made all of them. We found them when we were cleaning out his storage bins. Didn’t even remember keeping them. I helped him patch a few of them up. But we decided to hang them exactly the way they were.” Noah took a sip of his wine. “Because they do mean something.” Frances’ mouth opened slightly, but nothing came out. Adam gave a slow, exaggerated sip from his mug like he was watching '50 shades of tea'. @virtualoo
