Steam still clung faintly to Kaito’s skin when he stepped out of the bathroom. The oversized shirt Asher had handed him hung loose over his shoulders, sleeves falling past his wrists. The pants sat low on his hips, tied tight enough not to slip. They smelled like him, mint and earthy. A strange combination but somehow … what’s the exact word? Comforting, his wolf murmured. “Don’t start”, Kaito muttered under his breath, dragging a towel once more through his damp hair before stepping fully into the bedroom, forgetting that he was sharing a room with the big wolfy alpha. And then he looked up. Asher was sitting next to the bed, shirtless. Kaito had seen him without a shirt before. Moments that had been chaotic enough to excuse the staring. But this was different. It felt different after all that happened and all that he knew now. Soft lamplight traced over defined shoulders, down the strong line of his chest and the ridges of muscle along his abdomen. Damn those abs …, he thought taking a deep breath sighing but regain his self control realizing that he was staring like a horny teenager and turned his gaze away. That’s soo unfair. His wolf made a pleased sound. That is ours. Heat flooded up his neck before he could stop it. He forced his expression into something neutral, cool, unimpressed, unaffected. It didn’t work. On the contrary. His heart was racing like crazy like making an attempt to escape from his ribcage. He cleared his throat like this was a completely normal situation. “You, uh… weren’t kidding about the temperature thing”, Kaito gestured vaguely at the broad expanse of bare skin. “Trying to freeze me out already? Bold move. I just got here”, Kaito faint a smile trying to de-tention the obvious [sex] tension in the room. Kaito resumed walking toward the other side of the bed, each step carefully measured so he didn’t trip over his own feet like some nervous teenager. He was a magus, a wolf. He was a fucking hybrid who had faced mages and survived. He could handle a shirtless man. Probably. The mattress dipped slightly as he sat, very aware, painfully aware, of how close they were. He tugged at the hem of the oversized shirt, trying to ignore the way his pulse thudded in his ears. You are staring, his wolf pointed out. I am not, he argued internally. You absolutely are. Kaito dragged his gaze upward to Asher’s face which was worse because Asher was watching him as well. So, he tried after a nervous swallow, to force another casual tone. “So … just to establish ground rules. If you snore, I reserve the right to nudge you aggressively and possibly out of bed.” Kaito slid under the covers, lying back with what he hoped looked like relaxed and confidence. Inside, his entire nervous system was on high alert. His skin felt too sensitive, the air too thin. The room too small. He turned his head slightly toward Asher. “This is fine. Sharing a bed isn’t exactly scandalous. We’re adults,” he said, softer now. But it sounded more like he was telling himself that. Adults whose hearts are racing, his wolf added dryly but Kaito ignored it. He folded one arm behind his head, staring up at the ceiling like this was the most ordinary thing in the world but his heart was absolutely not cooperating. One thing was sure. He wasn’t going to be able to fall asleep too soon.
