  8. The second he saw Yukie lower his head as he fought to keep his emotions in check, Julius put up a magic barrier that would make others around them not notice. The air shimmered faintly, imperceptible to most, but layered with soft folds of magic designed to bend attention elsewhere, blur sound, and offer quiet privacy amid the morning bustle. Julius didn’t want Yukie to feel like he was exposing vulnerability to the world. Nor make him feel embarrassed. Yukie was the strongest person he knew, beautiful, terrifying, sharp-edged and revered. He commanded storms and silence in equal measure. And yet here he was, trembling and breaking down in a sunlit café booth with his face hidden in his arms like a boy unraveling from the weight of too much love, too much fear, too much everything. Julius didn’t like seeing him cry. Not because he thought it disgusting or weak, but because it meant Yukie had reached the end of what he could contain. And Julius knew, with painful clarity, just how much Yukie had learned to contain over the centuries. So he stayed still. Present. Let his hand be held with that white-knuckled desperation. Let his thumb stroke softly over the back of Yukie’s. 'I’ve got you' was what every motion said. 'You’re not alone.' 'Cry as long as you need.' His heart ached with something deep and quiet, a longing not just to comfort—but to honor this. To honor what it meant that Yukie could break open like this with him. That he trusted Julius with the raw and ugly pieces. The trembling voice. The words whispered through sobs. [“I love you.”] The way it came out cracked and small and helpless. Punched something in Julius’s chest so hard he almost forgot to breathe. His grip tightened around Yukie’s hand, warm and firm. Not pulling, not pushing. He reached across the table with his free hand, curling his fingers gently around Yukie’s wrist. Not to drag him out of hiding. But to let him know he was still seen. Still held. Still loved. “I love you too,” Julius said, voice quiet, warm, steady like stone warmed by sunlight. “And you don’t need to say anything more. You’ve already given me everything.” He let the moment settle. Let the sobs come as they needed to. No rush. No shame. He brushed his thumb over Yukie’s knuckles again, then across the back of his hand, tracing a path of reassurance. The scent of lemon tea mingled with the faint sweetness of tears dried on porcelain skin, and Julius found it achingly beautiful—each breath a testament to the strength it takes to break. Julius glanced out the window, past the sunlit garden now blurred behind the shimmer of his enchantment. The world beyond their little bubble moved on as if nothing was happening. But in here, in this small warded corner of the café, everything had changed. Around them, café patrons chatted, the clatter of dishes and the distant hum of water from the kitchen blending into oblivion. Julius watched the trembling shoulders slowly begin to ease. Not fully, but enough. The kind of release that meant the worst of the storm had passed. The sobs had lost their edge, shifting into quiet trembling breaths. Still raw. Still unraveling. But not drowning. Julius leaned in just slightly, his hand never leaving Yukie’s. “When you’re ready,” he said softly, “we’ll go find that lemon cake. Or something. I want to spoile you today” A silence stretched between them—warm now, not heavy. Julius sat letting it be exactly what it was. He didn’t need Yukie polished. He didn’t need him perfect. He just needed him real. And here he was. ------------------- Yumro felt Haru’s presence long before he saw the boy emerge. The cave had grown quiet again. The pulse of ancient energy, the eel, the stones, the deep call that had summoned Haru had faded into the stillness. Only traces of it remained, like threads of shadow clinging to the edge of a dream. But Yumro knew Haru was returning. Not because of any sound or ripple. But because the bond between them told him so. He looked down at Shan. The younger boy was still watching the last of the whale sharks, his hands tucked close now, reverent in his stillness. But Yumro felt the twitch in his energy before the boy turned his head slightly toward the east, the direction of the caves. He’s worried. Not panicked. Not frightened. Just that quiet tension of a heart that feels a thread pulling too far. “Haru’s okay,” Yumro said softly, though his voice couldn’t be heard underwater. Still, Shan looked up at him like he’d heard every word. Yumro brushed a hand once more across the boy’s back, a steadying gesture, warm and grounding. “He’s coming back.” Shan nodded, his expression solemn. He didn’t smile. But the lines of concern in his face eased just a bit. Yumro watched him closely. The boy’s eyes flicked toward the reef, then the blue behind them, then back toward Yumro again. Yumro saw it. The way Shan shifted slightly forward, like he might push off and swim back toward the rock walls, to go and find Haru. But he didn’t...He stayed. Because he trusted Yumro. And Yumro didn’t take that lightly. He gave Shan a small nod and pointed upward, toward a gentle shaft of light that filtered through the reef above. A signal. Let’s head up a little, let’s give Haru space. Shan hesitated only a second before following, swimming in tight formation beside Yumro like a loyal shadow. When Haru finally emerged from the cave, Yumro was already waiting at the reef’s edge, body still, eyes unreadable. He didn’t speak. He didn’t need to. He could feel the thrum of Haru’s aura, heavier in a strange way. A little bruised at the edges, but intact. Yumro’s eyes flicked over Haru's form. The boy had changed. Gills slit the sides of his neck, moving gently with the current. His limbs were leaner, clawed fingers glinting faintly. There was something more in his eyes now. Not wildness. Not danger. But loneliness. Like he wasn’t quiet sure where he belonged. Yumro moved. He swam forward without hesitation, cutting through the water in smooth, strong strokes until he reached Haru’s side. He then reached out slowly and placed one hand gently on Haru’s head. A silent, wordless embrace. ["Hey pup. I see you've learned something new again. Eventhough you aren't quiet there yet."] He tried to lightly tease Haru. From behind Yumro, Shan swam closer, his expression wide-eyed and open, concern written plainly across every inch of him. He paused a little ways back, hesitant, like he didn’t want to interrupt something between the two. And then without flourish or without warning Yumro changed. The shift was seamless, like slipping into warmer water. His legs shimmered, blurred, and then fused together, pale flesh turning smooth and opalescent. A long, mermaid-tail-like form extended from his hips down, powerful and sleek. Fins trailed like silk behind him. His hair, already ghost-pale, lengthened and swirled around him like mist underwater. Yumro turned his head slightly and gave him a nod. Shan drifted forward. “Haru,” he mouthed silently, eyes scanning his friend from top to bottom. Then, without thinking, he reached out and took Haru’s hand. Not tightly. Just enough to feel the other. Yumro pretended not to see the slight blush on Shan’s cheeks. His eyes never left Haru. “You did well,” he said, voice soft but with that unmistakable strength behind it. “You listened. You felt. That’s what matters.” He looked toward the dark cave behind them, where the pulse of the ancient energy still echoed faintly like a dying drumbeat. Then back to Haru. “You don’t need to prove anything to the sea,” he said quietly. “You belong with us already but this place accepts you too. Not because you can survive it. But because you respect it.” He turned then, slowly, motioning for the boys to follow. The light had shifted—deeper golds now, rippling from above as the sun began its descent. The ocean was changing once again, sliding into its next rhythm. As Yumro began to swim, he reached back with one hand, not looking—just holding it out. A silent gesture for Haru to take his hand. Shan swam just behind them, still clutching Haru’s other hand lightly, protectively. His energy was buzzing again, but this time it wasn’t worry. It was relief and quiet joy. They rose through the reef together, the cathedral of coral fading behind them. The sea exhaled, and Yumro with it. He didn’t say it aloud. But he was proud. Of both of them.
