Sora straightened up slightly at the sound of Ray’s voice. He wasn’t embarrassed about showing affection toward Fang in public, but he still wanted to be respectful and mindful of the other around them. After all, they were in the back room of Ray’s shop, his space. Perched on the edge of the couch beside Fang, Sora lifted his gaze as Ray descended. [" Im heading out to get some grub. Yall better eat what I bring ya, no complaining. Especially you-"] Sora caught himself smiling a little, when Fang didn’t immediately shut him down. Ray might act like a tough nail but he was actually a really good guy from what Sora had seen so far. He nodded along. ["I'll have you know that the kid hasn't left your side since I picked you up from the side of the road..."] Sora suddenly looked down at his hands, finding his fingers inexplicably fascinating at that moment. Anything to avoid meeting anyone’s eyes. But then Ray said something that made his stomach twist. He did want to know Fang’s story, he really did, but part of him dreaded what it might do to Fang mentally. The man already seemed stretched thin, and from what little Ray had shared, Sora knew Fang was still carrying deep scars. More than just those on his back. Scars from losing his first mate. Sora’s fingers tightened around each other. How do you even ask about something like that? How were you supposed to handle a situation so fragile? He barely noticed Ray leaving—only the sharp slam of the door registered, cutting through the air and leaving behind a suffocating silence. The quiet pressed in on them, thick with unspoken words. Neither seemed willing to be the first to break it. When Fang finally reached across the space between them and took his hand, Sora looked up. But Fang wasn’t looking at him either. His gaze was unfocused, his expression uncertain—nervous, hesitant. It wasn’t surprising, not after what Sora already knew. “Ray didn’t say much,” Sora began softly, his voice almost a whisper. “He didn’t go into detail, just… hinted.” He swallowed hard, the words heavy in his throat. “He said that me getting hurt might’ve… triggered memories from your past. From when you…” Sora’s voice faltered. “…when you lost someone important.." He bit the inside of his cheek, guilt and empathy twisting together in his chest. Talking about Fang’s first mate made his throat tighten. He couldn’t imagine what it was doing to Fang, having it dragged out into the open.
