1330tango Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 You may enjoy Hanaya no Nikai De by Sugano Akira & Ninomiya Etsumi. Akinobu doesn't walk around with a blank look, but he is the quiet, serious person in a family of boisterous 4 brothers, and a sister who went AWOL (this is covered in vol. 1). Aki always takes what is left over after his brothers have made their selection and is okay with that. He is smart and attends university. He ends up in an encounter with an old family friend, Ryuu, who owns a flower shop. Ryuu is older, a "player" and is a former motorcycle gang member. I'm not going to spoil the plot, but keep in mind that this is a very dialogue driven manga, and has very little sexual content. The angst is not the typical love triangle/dead lover/dumped lover found in BL, but the internal struggle of acceptance of self, flaws (real or perceived) and all. It is part of the Mainichi Seiten series. I read the series in order, so I was familiar with Akinobu by the time it got to his story in vols 9-10. In the whole series, a lot of discussion takes place and some readers may not like that. Hanaya no Nikai De is not licensed so if you don't read Japanese, you will have to find an electronic scanlated version. Only the first 2 volumes of the series are licensed. Another title is Castle Mango by Ogura Muku and Konohara Narise. Yorozu is the oldest son of a widow who runs a love hotel. His personality is such that even his own extended family doesn't feel he is pleasant to be around and compares him to his cute, smiling little brother. Yorozu meets Togame, who is a director of adult films when the crew films at Castle Mango. They get off to a horrible start, and the first volume is the progression of their relationship from a horrible beginning, to a realization that feelings may be involved. The second volume isn't out in the US yet, so I'm waiting to see the outcome of Yorozu and Togame's story. This has very little sexual content. This is licensed and readily available. Both titles reflect my weakness for odd couples, but both are great stories. There is an age difference between Yorozu and Togame, but this is discussed, and Yorozu is drawn to look older and he is as tall as Togame.
