  26. One evening, while randomly switching TV channels, I stumbled upon the end of a documentary about durian. The 5 minutes I managed to see were enough to catch my attention, since the durian was described as ‘the king of fruits’ with an unique flavor, an unique odor (very unique, I’d say), warming and aphrodisiac properties. Durian is a well-known fruit in southeast Asia, native to Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia. The following day I went to an Asian market in the town, looking for the miraculous fruit. After around 20 minutes wandering around the market, I noticed a durian pile. As I was getting closer to the pile, a strong odor hit me. I didn’t know where the smell was coming from and I kinda wanted to refuse the idea that it was coming from the durian, so I started to look around in search of another possible source. Noticing some public toilets not very far away, I assumed the odor was coming from there (yeah, that bad it was smelling XD). As I was staring at the durian pile, the seller noticed my disgusted expression, cracked a fruit and told me to taste it with an almost sadistic smirk on his face. I said to myself that I will definitely taste it, even if I won’t be able to eat anything else for the rest of the day, just not to give the seller the satisfaction that I couldn’t. Inside of the thorn-covered husk, there is a creamy yellow flesh gathered around a stone. Its consistency is similar to a vanilla pudding and to me it tasted something like bananas in an advanced stage of ripeness, mixed with garlic and alcohol. It’s a pretty interesting flavor and kinda hard to describe; it also gives a feeling of warmth in all your body, but I couldn’t see any aphrodisiac effect, to be honest. XD After tasting it, I bought 1 dorian (it costed $7/kg and 1 fruit typically weighs 1 to 3 kgs) and I have to admit I was really pleased to see the disappointment in the seller’s eyes, who couldn’t enjoy the ‘show’ he was hoping for. Later I found out that there are different species of dorian, with different smells, different tastes. The one I had was a Malaysian dorian, which is well-known for being really smelly – call it bad luck? XD

  27. Korean blood types meaning If you are into South Korea,or you are a Korean, you are most likely to know that people there ask about one’s blood type instead of the zodiac sign. Why is that? Let’s go back in time, back, back in the 1970 year when the Japanese writer Masahiko Nomi linked the personality as a concept of one’s personality. It answers better to your world than any other description what zodiacs offer. Later on the idea spread over Taiwan and South Korea. Nowadays in South Korean there is no person who wouldn’t know their blood type. The theory follows the main blood types one possibly can have – A,B,AB and O. BLOOD TYPES AS A HINT TO YOUR PERSONALITY °•”A” Blood type•° (The DreamCatcher) Said to be sensitive and easily hurt, people from ”A” blood type are most likely to interpret the things their way,and often misunderstand. They hide their own thoughts, but as well are good and nice people, caring for others. Romance is in their blood, they like to forget reality and hide in their own fantastic world. As well, pretty stubborn perfectionists. Best Traits: Conservative, introverted, reserved, patient, punctual and perfectionists. Worst Traits: Obsessive, stubborn, self conscious and uptight. Review: Referred as ‘farmers’ in some descriptions, Type A’s are said to be considerate of others and loyal to a fault. They can also be secretive and reluctant to share their feelings. Apparently they don’t hold their liquor well, either. °•”B” Blood type•° (The Enjoyable Optimist) They are simply optimists that enjoy life. Can laugh at the failure’s face, struggling to create a different reality.Romance is a thing they might get themselves in,being distant,in another world where they just like being. For their bright and liberal way of living, they might get enemies easily. Bad trait is they are to give up too easily. Best Traits: Animal-loving, creative, flexible, individualistic, optimistic and passionate. Worst Traits: Forgetful, irresponsible and self-centered. Review: Referred to as ‘hunters’, Type B’s have very independent natures and tend not to be concerned about what other people think of them. Although often described as shallow and lazy, they can be quite passionate about the things they hold dear. Patience is not their strong suit either. Type B men have acquired a very negative reputation in Korea and are not considered by many to be good husband material. Often described as ‘players’, they are perceived as being selfish and mercurial, quick to anger and not terribly reliable. That said, their bad boy image makes them very attractive to women, but not for the long term. (Type B women do not share in this bad rep, for some unexplained reason). °•”AB” Blood type•° (The Patient and Concentrated) They have a strong patience,as well, concetration. They are to be known ”can do anything”. Projects are well organized and done by them, work is something they are good at. Interested in everything, they are intelligent. But bad is they show an authoritative attitude, making others that don’t know so much feel foolish. Advice is to not look down on people, respect them and value the way they live. Best Traits: Cool, controlled, empathic, introverted and rational. Worst Traits: Aloof, critical, indecisive and unforgiving. Review: Referred to as ‘humanists’, Type AB’s are said to be controlled more by their heads, than by their hearts. They are rational, good with money, but unpredictable. Although inclined to be distant, they prefer harmony and as such, work well with mediators. Some consider them two-faced, and therefore untrustworthy. °•”O” Blood type•° (The Leaders with Confidence) They have bright personality and lead people well. The kindness is a point they have, and they won’t leave someone in a trouble alone. Tend to make things dramatic, they might make others feel uncomfortable. They are proud of themselves and won’t allow people to bring them down. Living the life their own way, there is a chance for them to get this back as a poison. Advice is to admit a defeat, than to act and feel like in a slump. Best Traits: Ambitious, athletic, robust and self-confident. Worst Traits: Arrogant, insensitive, ruthless and vain. Review: Referred to as ‘warriors’, Type O’s are viewed as natural leaders and are often, also, natural athletes. They tend to be outgoing, expressive and passionate, but can also bore others to death with their obsessive drive for success coupled with their absolute convictions that they are winners. This certainty that they will always win explains why they aren’t afraid to take risks or gamble. They have a strong physical presence and are unlikely to ever be overlooked. MATCHING THE BLOOD TYPES – BEST AND WORST Let’s see how Koreans believe to be mated is good, according to the blood type,of course. (I so bet that you will ask your crush,or partner about their blood type. Eh,caught you,na? ;P) ‘A’ BLOOD TYPE Best Match: ‘O’ blood type,’A’ blood type; Worst Match: ‘AB’ blood type, ‘B’ blood type; ‘B’ BLOOD TYPE Best Match: ‘AB’ blood type, ‘O’ blood type; Worst Match: ‘A’ blood type, ‘B’ blood type; ‘O’ BLOOD TYPE Best Match: ‘A’ blood type, ‘B’ blood type; Worst Match: ‘O’ blood type; ‘AB’ blood type; ‘AB’ BLOOD TYPE Best Match: ‘B’ blood type, ‘AB’ blood type; Worst Match: ‘O’ blood type, ‘A’ blood type. 28. While enjoying my coffee, thinking about something to write in an article, the idea of doing a research about coffee in South Korea was born. We all know Asia for its tea tradition, but believe me I would never imagine how much Koreans enjoy coffee. Well,in general of course. There are always exceptions, indeed. But before going for the main topic,I'd like to go back in time,as always, and see how coffee was discovered and how it became so popular in South Korea. I won't go in much details, only the most important and interesting things about the history of coffee. After all,it's about Asia we talk about, not other cultures. But nothing will be lost,if I drown you for a second in the bitter taste of coffee and its history. Basically,we'll mention a legend. That's right. From the researches I did,the legend caught my interest. Kaldi is the name of an ordinary man that every morning went to feed his goats, taking them outside when weather seemed to allow doing so. One day though he noticed his goats eating something that they seemed to enjoy, but as well something that made them hyper. So hyper that they couldn't sleep during the night. And it repeated every time they got near these certain trees. Kaldi contacted people that were in the speciality of inventing,of course. Later on,the news about this odd tree reached Arabia. Arabs were the first to invent coffee. So they opened the golden box and did a great job using coffee as a way to do business. Well,it can't be certain how and who first tasted the bitter taste of it in South Korea, but the fact that South Korea is the eleventh biggest industry when it comes to coffee talks about fast consuming and raising sales on the certain product. COFFEE ADDICTION Have you watched the Korean drama 'Coffee Prince'? I recommend it. But that's not the point, actually, there is a real coffee shop under that name. That's right. Coffee shops are something common in South Korea. You can even see variations in style. Bet you didn't know there are special coffee shops where pet lovers can go with their pets. Okay,if you knew, how about the coffee buzz cans? Similar to coke can,but coffee,Koreans enjoy to get the buzz taste of coffee. Personally,I liked that many coffee shops offer the home feeling you get at your house while drinking coffee. The style and design they get for their shop is not only modern and woah one,but there are shops designed as if you are in a living room. This can get you comfortable,if you've got some lunch break you want to spend in the coffee shop. Relaxing,I bet. Cupcake or Love? I have to mention, not really,I want to mention the different sweets you get offered in a coffee shop. But Koreans refer the coffee as a way to enjoy your time with your lover,or your besties. That said,I went through the pleasure to watch different commercials. Coffee commercials,of course. None showed these beautiful decorated and tasty cupcakes you can find in a coffee shop. What I saw was mainly the warming feeling a cup of coffee can give, right next to your precious one. Here a commercial I'd like you to see. But when you give it a thought, many believe that Asians are cold people. That's not true. They can find the happiness in the smallest things. Even if it's a cup of coffee. And as a person who studies human mind for years,I'd like to share something that some of you might have thought about it,or not. But let me set it as a thing you can think on. What it seems to be cold is actually warm and what it seems to be warm is actually cold. Keep this in mind and don't be with the false impression that Asians are cold people. Offer them a cup of coffee and enjoy a conversation you'll remember your whole life. (: So,ready to share the coffee, folks? Saga©

  31. New Year Customs in Asia People in Asia, like everywhere else in the world celebrate the day marking the start of a new year, a day when we leave behind the problems of the past, we find new hope, a day when we begin anew. Many people wonder why is New Year celebrated in different days around the world. The answer is that there are 3 basic calendars, which give many possibilies to celebrate the beginning of a new year. - The solar calendar – The Western calendar, with 12 months of 30 and 31 days, in which solstices and equinoxes fall on about the same date every year and a leap-day is added every four years. - The lunar calendar – The Islamic calendar, which is a sequence of twelve lunar months and tracks the phases of the moon but shifts annually relative to the solar year. In this type of calendar months do not correlate with the four seasons. - The lunisolar calendar – The Chinese and Jewish calendars, in which extra lunar months are added from time to time, most years having 12 months but every second or third year has 13, in order to keep the solar and lunar years approximately synchronized. New Year in China, Korea, Vietnam New Year Celebration in China Chinese New Year is defined as the second new moon after the winter solstice, so it begins sometime between late January and mid-February (which, in the Chinese calendar, starts forty-five days after the winter solstice). The Chinese New Year is celebrated not only in China, but also in Korea, Vietnam (where it is called Tet) as well as in Chinese communities from all around the world. Most customs are meant to bring good luck in the following year, so, before the end of the current year, people try to pay off all of their debts, children are given money wrapped in red envelopes as presents (red is the color of good fortune) and everyone tries to put on new clothes. Dragon dances are performed at New Year to scare away evil spirits. The house is cleaned before the beginning of the New Year, with the meaning of getting rid of the old and welcoming the new. Family members will normally stay awake during the New Year night. Some people just stay until the midnight, after the fireworks. One of the most important features of a Chinese New Year celebration is a feast with many special kinds of food with lucky connotations: noodles for long life, fish (because the Chinese word for fish, ‘yu’, also sounds like the word for ‘abundance’), and sweet rice cakes for a rich, sweet life. In Vietnam, Tet is also considered a birthday celebration. Along with Koreans, Vietnamese measure age by the number of lunar new years they have lived through, so a baby will officially turn one on his first Tet, even if he was only born a few days before the event takes place. People wish one another ‘Gongxi Facai’, meaning ‘Congratulations, may you get rich’. New Year in Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos, Sri Lanka New Year Celebration in Thailand The Thai New Year, Songkran, is celebrated in Thailand, Cambodia (where it is called Chaul Chnam Thmey), Laos, and some other parts of Southeast Asia between 13th to 15th April. Songkran is a festival of purification, cleaning and renewal, so, its main characteristic is water-splashing. People roam the streets with containers of water or water guns and splash everyone around. Besides the water-splashing, people celebrating Songkran also go to a wat (Buddhist monastery) to bring food to monks and pour water mixed with fragrance over Buddha statues and images. The Thai traditional greeting is ‘สวัสดีปีใหม่’ (sawatdi pi mai), literally meaning ‘Happy New Year’. New Year in Japan New Year Celebration in Japan Traditionally Japan also celebrated a lunar New Year (Setsubun), but since 1873, Japan adopted the Western calendar and the official New Year’s Day has been moved to January 1st. Some people celebrate both the traditional New Year and the modern one, others have simply transposed the old customs to the new holiday. At the New Year every house is thoroughly swept and dried beans are scattered in every room of the house to chase away evil spirits. At midnight on December 31st the bells of Buddhist temples are rung 108 times (to symbolize the 108 human sins in Buddhist belief, as well as the number of beads on a Buddhist rosary). Before sunrise on January 1st, people often drive to the coast or climb a mountain so that they can see the first sunrise of the New Year, called ‘hatsuhinode’. People commonly great each other with ‘Kotoshi mo yoroshiku o-negai-shimasu’, meaning ‘I hope for your favour again in the coming year’. New Year in The Philippines New Year Celebration in Philippines Round shapes (representing coins) are believed to symbolize prosperity for the coming year in the Philippines. Many Filipino families display baskets of round fruits on the dining table for New Year’s Eve. Other people eat exactly 12 fruits at midnight, as many as the months of the year that is about to end (grapes, which are also eaten at midnight in Spain, are the easiest choice). The traditional Filipino New Year’s greeting is ‘Manigong Bagong Taon’, which literally means ‘A prosperous New Year’. New Year in Bali, Indonesia New Year Celebration in Bali, Indonesia Most people from the Indonesian island of Bali follow an ancient form of Hinduism, and their new year, Nyepi, is based on a Hindu soli-lunar calendar. On Nyepi eve people walk to the main crossroads of their village accompanied by gamelan music where they perform a sort of exorcism ceremony to drive away evil, symbolized by huge ‘monsters’, which are figurines made of paper and bamboo. On Nyepi itself, everything is silent, streets are empty, no fire is lit, no food cooked, no music is played, and radios and televisions are turned off. People are forbidden to leave their house, to make love or to talk more than strictly necessary. So, Bali welcomes the New Year in silence, with reverent self-control. Except for the Hindu Balinese, most Indonesians are Muslims and they celebrate the New Year on the first day of the first month of the Muslim calendar. The New Year day is for quiet celebration and for reflection. The most common Indonesian greeting for New Year is ‘Selamat Tahun Baru’, literally meaning ‘Happy New Year’.

  33. Hello all! :3 Ready for another Zen tour? *grins It's funny when night falls upon Earth, well... at least when the time zone allows it, human mind starts going to some philosophic paths. You know, these small hours of the night, when you start feeling awesomely 'smart' for asking awesomely 'weird' questions to yourself. Like the flow of life, how we were created...or whatever your mind is curious about. Actually, it's not some night spell. It's the inner peace. And since I love...I mean 'LOVE' to ask questions, I realized that the wrong question leads to wrong answer. Simple, right? Here is the catch though, it'd be a lot easier if we actually knew which question is wrong and which is right. The "thrill", if I can call it this way, is not getting the answer - it's the journey through which you go to there. And that journey is strictly bound to finding the right question. Zen is actually that kind of journey. Puzzles of questions and to get the right answer, you have to learn how to listen. Listen to the silence. Last time I asked a question, probably many people would think that was some ...damn odd frigging question. "If two hands clap and make no sound, what is the sound one hand make?" It is truly beautiful. Come on. Turn off your music or whatever you have on. Clap your hands. Yeah, don't roll eyes. Just clap them now, it doesn't request anything at all. Clap them and stay with the hands as they are connected. What actually you did? Yes, it is obvious. You clapped hands. Stay like that a bit more. Ah, there is no sound, right? The problem is that you listened to the clap, not to the silence. I could say "If two hands clap and the lights turn off." Then what? You will actually notice the lights turning off? But why when I said " -- they make no sound", you actually went for the sound itself, while clapping. But ignored the silence. Simple. Because you are deaf to the silence like you are blind to the darkness. And once you get the inner peace, you wouldn't need eyes, ears, nose or whatever. Of course, I suppose. *chuckles Oh,sorry. Are you still standing with the hands connected? ;D If no, okay. Gather them after the clap again. Now, when you listen to the silence relax yourself and close your eyes for a bit... what does it feel like? You standing there, with hands becoming ONE, silent, closed eyes.... Let's add to the image one temple. Oh, are you praying? *grins The sound of one hand is a prayer. Well, according to me. As I said, the answer doesn't matter. The question does - so...are you praying or simply clapping hands? Hm. So, I will end today's journey with something very interesting. I am still thinking over it. Read that story, you may state your thoughts.

  34. Hello all! I want to have a place where to talk about Zen. :3 I truly love and admire Zen Buddhism. I started my Zen journey 7-8 years ago and to be honest, at first I didn't get a thing. Not only that, I actually went criticizing some of the Zen stories through which one is supposed to learn a whole new life. Basic learners and in general people that know a bit about Zen surely know that Zen is about everything and nothing; "Desire not a single thing and you shall find happiness." I remember the first time I read that line. I was at some local cafe-bar with friends. *chuckles Yeah, I always carry some books in my bag, no idea why. I feel kind of complete(?) when I have some book/note/papers/manga/whatever to do with art and literature. So,I was drinking my tea with my friends, while we were skipping classes at the near local cafe-bar. And it was then, when I was actually reading some random page of my Zen book I was currently carrying in bag. "Desire not a single thing and you shall find happiness." I remember how I averted my eyes from the book to the window and blank stared. My thought was 'How to not desire nothing and I find happiness?! Ain't dreams made of wishes and desires? Ain't dreams becoming reality the real happiness?!' I put the book aside and ignored that sentence for around four years. Yeah, you read well - four years I spent over a single damn sentence, which I found for ridiculous. Of course,of course I kept reading. Some parts I agreed, to other not. It was like an inner war, you know? But then one night I got angry for not getting a thing of that Zen Buddhism, I went sarcastic; "Why should I actually think like most of the people do? Zen Buddhism is something special, Zen Buddhism has hidden wisdom, Zen Buddhism this and that. What if Zen Buddhism is actually NOTHING?!" Nirvana. I froze and laughed. Every single human being has their own interpreting of things and Zen is not an exception. Zen is actually the NOTHING. Well, may be I sound crazily mad right now. Zen can be NOTHING when you decide so, but ZEN can be EVERYTHING when you decide so as well. If I am asked now what about the sentence - 'Desire not a single thing and you shall find your happiness', I must say... it's a wonderful saying. Natural flow of things is the happiness, everything else is your own force to make through. Usually you feel tired and exhausted, you say 'Had enough'. But, hey, why blaming it all on life? Why you say life sucks? Who actually made you into forcing your strength to...be it, make your crush like you back; get the desired job; marry the guy of your dreams - whatever you call 'happiness'? You,yourself and no one else. Because when desire rises up,then sins arise too. To understand something, you first must drop your opinions and see through the words. Because words are most powerful weapon of humanity. And I am a young soul, I have desires too. But in the moments of breakdowns in my life, I came to understand that 'NOTHING' is a lonely thing and through loneliness and pain, one learns a lot. A whole new things, than when is happy. The irony comes now though, when I was so close to understanding that saying, I fail once again. Because of desires and my own opinion. And even now, failing all because I stated personal opinions and Zen is all about the ''question'', not the answer. Because the answer is an individual.... may be? *grins Today I read something really beautiful and I want to share it and ask you, if you saw through the words I am about to write; "If two hands clap and make no sound, what is the sound one hand make?" *smiles Ain't it beautiful?

  35. Which makes me recall one story, Nan-in, a Japanese master during the Meiji era (1868-1912), received a university professor who came to inquire about Zen. Nan-in served tea. He poured his visitor's cup full, and then kept on pouring. The professor watched the overflow until he no longer could restrain himself. "It is overfull. No more will go in!" "Like this cup," Nan-in said, "you are full of your own opinions and speculations. How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup?"
