-
The scent of the sea filled Leon’s lungs, bitter and sharp with salt, but it did little to cool the fury in his chest. He stood beside Fang on the rooftop, his jaw tight, arms crossed, the muscles in his neck taut as steel cables. The moment Fang mentioned they were near the docks, his eyes scanned the landscape below with quiet calculation. Rusted rooftops. Steel shipping containers. Dark alleyways. Long-forgotten warehouses resting like sleeping beasts. They were close. He wasn’t sure if his aunt would be expecting him, or not. Hell, she'd probably planned for him to just follow her command the moment she arrived. (“Where are they expecting you?”) Fang's words echoed in his head. Leon narrowed his eyes. 'Where would Camill go, if she wanted leverage?' She’d set the stage. His gaze locked on a building near the edge of the docks, isolated but large and older than the rest, with wide bay doors and windows covered in grime. A loading warehouse. Although Fang's sense of smell was superb. Leon’s eye sight was at a much higher level. Almost like a infrared camera he could see faint heat signals with his puma eyes. Shifters and werewolf both had a much higher body temperature even in human form. He saw around two dozen driffrence heat signatures around that building. “They are in there,” he said quietly. He didn’t wait for Fang to respond. Leon leapt from the rooftop, landing smoothly on the fire escape below without a sound, before vaulting onto the next building, descending quickly. His pulse thrummed with adrenaline. ((CAMILL)) The concrete floor echoed beneath her heels as Camill circled the room slowly, the dim lights hummed above. The sea wind whispered through cracked panels in the siding, brushing across Asta's face. She had her cellphone in hand ready for Liam to call her back once he was done throwing a tantrum. She smiled softly to herself, brushing a stray strand of hair behind her ear, her feline senses tingling with anticipation. There was a tension in the air that only predators felt when the prize was close. She relished it. Asta sat motionless in the chair, silent now. Camill turned away from the boy, walking toward the far side of the warehouse. Two of her men stood watch there. Both puma shifters, standing silent to the side on alert. Their group was prepared for both scenarios. “Anything?” she asked. “Not yet,” one replied. She turned, taking one last glance at Asta. This place had been chosen for a reason. The smell of the sea would dull the senses of any werewolf. and while Liam’s instincts were sharp, they would still be dulled here. Here, she would have the advantage. ((LEON )) Leon crouched low behind a stacked set of shipping crates, his eyes glowing faintly in the shadows as he studied the structure ahead. No visible guards. No signs of movement, yet he knew they were around. Leon looked down at the building’s side wall. A rusted door with faded paint and a loose hinge. Not the front entrance. Not where they were expecting him to come through. He faintly catch Asta scent. It pulled and taut in his chest, like a thread stretched thin. It was painful. Like someone had reached into his chest and was twisting his heart with every passing minute. The rage he’d kept buried for so long was boiling up. He didn't care about the politics of the family. He didn’t care about the traditions they’d tried to force on him. They took what was his. And they made him go this far. So now they were going to see what happened when he stopped holding back. Leon's eyes locked with at Fang. "Five guards at the front door. Some hidding around. You take those guys out. I'm getting Asta out first from the side door." He spoke in barely a whisper. Just loud enough for Fang to hear his plan. Then without waiting for permission , Leon slipped around the side of the building and snuck his way unnoticed over to the door. With a swift motion, he kicked the door in, the metal groaning as it slammed against the wall. On the middle of the room, Camill stood dead center. Behind her, Asta was tied to the chair. Bruised but breathing. Leon’s expression hardened. “Let. Him. Go.” Camill didn’t waver. “Hello, Liam. I see you chose the hard way” Leon’s claws extended at his sides. “You’re going to regret touching him.” Camill tilted her head, her tone almost amused. “You’ve grown. But you still don’t get it. You were never meant for just a normal life.” she motioned toward Asta, “This fantasy? Ends tonight.” Leon took a step forward, unflinching. “I warned you once, Camill. Stay out of my life.” “And I warned you,” she countered, voice ice cold. “Family comes first. You chose a fake life over your own. And now, blood will be paid.” She snapped her fingers. 4 shadows leapt from the rafters. Guards with claws and bared fangs flashing appeared before her. Sheltering from Leon. The men didn’t hesitate. All four shifted mid-step, bones cracking as the sleek bright golden fur surged across their bodies. Leon's muscles coiled like a spring and he lunged, colliding with the first attacker in midair. The warehouse exploded into chaos, claws came at him. Roares and shouts echoing against the walls. The second shifter hit the ground hard, Leon’s claws raking across his chest with calculated precision. Not deep enough to kill, but deep enough to make him stay down. The third came from the left, fast and reckless. Leon turned into the momentum, catching the attacker’s throat between his shoulder and elbow before slamming him into a rusted support beam. Crack. Bone. Broken. Screams echoing through the warehouse. Leon didn’t stop moving. The blood in his veins ran molten, his senses sharpened to a razor’s edge. But even as he fought, his eyes kept flicking back to Asta. He was shaking. Terrified but alive. Leon growled, low and dangerous. Camill hadn’t moved. She stood calm and collected. Her heels clicking slowly across the floor as she walked toward him. “You’ve always had potential.” she said, voice light and mocking. "You just buried it under all that… humanity.” Leon shifted back on his feets slowly, claws retracting, returning to human. Sweat slicked his brow, blood staining his knuckles, but his stance was controlled. Ready. “You think this is about power?” he hissed. “About shifter bloodlines and family honor? You don’t get it, Camill. This isn’t some game. This is my life.” She rolled her eyes. “No, Liam. This is about who you are. And the lengths you're willing to go to pretend you're someone else. Do you really think love will protect you?” She gestured to Asta. “Do you think your feelings will keep him safe?” Leon didn’t answer. He couldn’t. The truth? No love could keep Asta safe. But Leon would, with whatever it took. “You were supposed to regrow our family,” she continued, stepping closer, her voice softening as if she were speaking to a child. “But instead, you ran away, chose to lay in the dirt with humans.” “Say another word about him,” Leon growled, voice cracking with fury, “and I’ll show you what I really buried.” Camill's expression shifted, the smallest twitch of her eye, a tiny break in her mask of control. She was starting to realize: he wasn’t the same boy who fled. Leon was a storm now. One aimed directly at her. But Camill was far from defenseless. “I gave you a choice.” she said. “ Now I'm done being merciful.” She turned toward Asta. Leon’s blood ran cold. Time froze. Leon didn’t think. He moved as Camill raised her leg off the floor and with incredible force sent her foot flying down over Asta’s bend knee. He set off toward her. But in the second he leaped through the air at her. Camill’s hind leg connected to Asta’s knee. Something gave and an ear sickening crunch came from the leg, before Asta’s scream. Leon's body slammed into Camill the second later. Both hit the ground hard. Camill snarled, the illusion of control shattered. She clawed his arm, and got her leg up under him to kicked him off. Leon caught himself and stood between her and Asta. Blood running down his arm from her claws. Behind him, he could heard Asta's sobs of pain. He wanted to comfort him but couldn't as Camill was still there. She hurt him! Leon's breath ragged, eyes glowing with anger. “I'm going to kill you,” he said, voice barely above a whisper. Camill pushed herself up, laughter bubbling from her throat even as she bled from the mouth. “So, you’re in love with him? Don’t make me laughte" Camill touched her lips, fingers coming away with blood. Liam was beyond reclaiming. He had chosen his fate. And now, it would be dealt with in violence. Camill stood slowly, posture still regal despite the bruises beginning to blossom beneath her skin. She wiped her mouth and exhaled, her eyes narrowing. “You can't do shit,” she taunted. Leon didn’t flinch, he just stared at her like something he wanted to rip into. “Fuck try me.” Camill smirked before her twisted unnaturally as she shifted on the spot. Bones cracked. Muscle twisted. Flesh tore and reshaped. Her body shrank and snapped, pulled taut and compact until only black fur and a sleek puma stood in her place. Her golden eyes glowing and fixed on them both. All instinct and rage. Leon's body moved on autopilot. His claws tore through the fabric of his shirt as his skin shifted. The golden hue in his eyes deepened, his limbs reshaping, fur sprouting down his arms and along his back. She wasn’t giving him much of a choice. She was forcing him to become the thing he had been trying to protect Asta from. Camill pounced on him with her claws aimed at Leon’s throat even before he could finish the shift. Leon caught her mid-air, claws against claws. He crashed backward, slamming her into a support beam with brute force. Giving himself enough time to shift into his full puma form. Black fur ripped through his pale skin, fangs elongated. As his body changed, just as Camill’s had. He hit the floor in a snarl standing on all four limbs. He roared, finally gaining leverage, showing her the full force of his strenght. She tumbled across the floor, before she pounced on him again, eyes wild with something unhinged. They collided in a blur of fur and claws. Puma against puma. Her weight pressed him back, but Leon fought with purpose, not bloodlust. He twisted, grabbing her by the scruff, and flung her into a pile of crates. They shattered under the impact, dust and splinters flying into the air. He rose to his feet, panting, half-shifted, his voice thick with anger. “I didn’t want it to come to this,” he growled. “but you made it so” Camill emerged from the wreckage, still in her beast form, tail twitching. She shifted back but not all at once. She did it slow. Intentionally. When she stood again in her human skin, she was smiling through bloodstained lips. “You’re wrong,” she whispered. “It changes everything.” Leon stood in front of Asta, shielding him. As he growled at the other shifted. Camill tilted her head. “Now he has seen it. All of it. Let's see if your little human still wants you after this.” She mocked him, but then her face froze, as a howl echoed from outside. A werewolf. Fang had finally entered the scene. For the first time, Camill looked… uncertain. She could fight Liam. But two at once? A werewolf and a rogue puma with nothing left to lose? This wasn’t her stage anymore. Camill narrowed her eyes… then turned and disappeared out of the building. Running off with the guards whom was able to move. Leon didn’t pursuit her His fur slowly receded. Cuts from claw marks still bleeding, but they would heal and disappeared quickly on their own. He stood with his back to Asta. For a moment, he felt afraid to turn around. Because Asta now knew the thing he had kept from him till now. He was afraid of the look Asta would give him. Or the fear in the human's eyes when their eyes would meet. But he still turned around. Asta was hurt, and it was his fault. “I’ve got you,” he whispered, voice trembling. “I’m here. I’ve got you.” He did not look Asta in the eyes as he undid the knots and released him from the chair. The boy’s, the scent of salt, blood, and fear swirling around them. As the sound of Fang's boots hit the concrete behind him, Leon clenched his fists. He was acting like a pussy for not looking up. "Let’s get you to the hospital now" He said as he tried to pick Asta up bridal style. “…Asta,” he said softly. His voice cracked. “I—I didn’t want you to find out like this.. please, let me just take you to the hospital first." He could then hate him later. But right now they needed a doctor to take a look at the leg. Leon feared it was broken. ------------------------ (Sora) The world around him was moving too fast, too loud. But he felt like he was sinking. The press of the stretcher, the buzz of voices, the sting of antiseptic in the air... none of it anchored him. What did was the lingering warmth of Fang’s hand in his, now gone. But there was a hope of the promise Fang had given him of saving his friend. He would hang on to that. The ambulance doors slammed shut. Everything became much more quiet after that. His body ached, as every breath stabbed like glass in his side, and his head throbbed with a dull, rhythmic pulse. But it wasn’t the physical pain that gnawed at him the most. It was the feeling of being useless. Of being the one left behind. Of lying flat on his back while the rest of the world spiraled out of his control. He didn’t know how long he lay there, staring at the ceiling, the sirens wailing overhead like distant cries for help. It was surreal. They had taken Asta. Why would someone do that?! He clenched his jaw and tried to shift, only for a sharp jolt of pain to remind him that even his own body had turned against him. His fists balled weakly at his sides. His eyes drifted to the sliver of window in the ambulance door. Past the flashing lights and blurred buildings, he felt a thousand miles from who he’d been that morning. The version of himself that thought he could keep things under control. That person was gone. Beaten down and bleeding into the stretcher. And in his place… He didn’t know yet. The medic checked his vitals again, murmuring something about stabilization, about staying calm. He nodded without listening. Calm? What did that even mean? There was nothing calm inside him. Only the quiet scream of powerlessness. The weight of Fang’s concern had surprised him. For a moment, it had almost made him feel safe. Like he wasn’t alone. Like maybe someone still had his back. Fang was out there now, and Sora was stuck here with nothing but his thoughts, and the horrible feeling in his chest. He closed his eyes, fighting the sting behind them. He didn’t want to cry. But the truth was he was scared. He had been helpless. And he hated it. Somewhere deep down, a part of him whispered: That can’t happen again. .......... The hospital room was quiet, save for the steady beep of the monitor beside him and the low hum of air conditioning cycling through overhead vents. Clean linens, dim lights, and the sterile scent of disinfectant surrounded him like a cage. Sora lay still, half reclined in the hospital bed, ribs tightly wrapped and chest aching with every breath. The morphine had dulled the sharper edges of the pain, but it hadn’t done much for the heaviness in his chest that had nothing to do with injury. Sleep came in fits, short bursts interrupted by memories he didn’t want to revisit. Flashes of the alley, of fists, of blood on the pavement. And worse: the sound of the van door slamming shut. He blinked up at the ceiling, unfocused. He hadn't spoken much since they'd moved him out of the ER. The nurse had explained things like. He’d fractured a rib or two, the stitches on his forehead was the visible, and some bruised tissue. Then something about buildup fluid they were keeping an eye on. But it had all passed over him like radio static. Asta was still missing. And Sora was here. Trapped in a hospital bed while everything outside was spiraling beyond his control. He hated it. The knock on the door was soft. Hesitant. He didn’t look up. He expected a nurse, or maybe the police. He did not expect to hear his father's voice. “Sora...” His entire body tensed. The voice was too familiar. Low, carefully controlled. It sounded like someone trying too hard to seem gentle. Like someone who knew they’d already lost the right to speak. Sora turned his face toward the window, away from the door. “They called me. You listed me as your emergency contact,” the man continued, as if that explained everything. As if years of silence could be smoothed over by paperwork and protocol. “I was sixteen when I filled that out,” Sora said, voice dry and hoarse. “I forgot to change it.” A pause. Then footsteps. Closer. He didn’t turn around, but he could sense it. That awkward shuffle, the way the man hovered like he wanted permission to enter a space he didn’t belong in anymore. “You look…” his father began. Then stopped himself. “Are you alright?” Sora gave a humorless laugh under his breath. “What do you think?” More silence. Then, a small voice that Sora didn’t recognize spoke up. “Why is he angry at you, Daddy?” Sora’s blood went cold. A little girl. He didn’t move. He didn’t breathe. For a moment, he felt completely removed from his own body. Don’t tell me… The girl’s footsteps were light, tentative. Sora didn’t look. He didn’t want to. He couldn’t. “Sora,” his father tried again, carefully. “This is Hana. She’s your—” “I know who she is,” Sora cut in sharply. “I’m not stupid.” The girl went quiet. Sora finally turned his head, slowly, painfully. His eyes met the man’s first. He recognized the same man who’d once promised to never leave, who’d gone and built a new life without him, without even looking back. And beside him stood a girl around maybe six or seven. Her small hands clenched in the hem of her dress, wide brown eyes staring at him like he was something out of a book she didn’t understand. She looked uncomfortable. Scared of the situation. Of being somewhere she didn’t belong. Of seeing a stranger with bruises on his face and tied up with wires to a big machin. Good. She shouldn’t feel like she belonged here. None of them did. Sora turned away again, pressing his temple into the pillow. “I didn’t ask for you to come.” “I know. But I’m here,” his father said gently. “Whether you want me to be or not.” “You’re about ten years too late for that.” He heard the exhale. Not quite a sigh but more like a quiet deflation. Like someone who’d been hoping for something they already knew they wouldn’t get. “Do you need anything?” his father asked after a long silence. “Food? I can talk to the nurses, or—” “I need you to leave.” His voice wasn’t cruel. Just tired. Empty. Like there was nothing left in him to give, not even resentment. “Sora…” “I can’t deal with you right now,” he murmured. “I can’t deal with this.” He didn’t look again. Not at his father. Not at the little girl. He shut his eyes, face turned away, and pulled the thin blanket a little higher over his chest. For a long time, nothing happened. Just quiet breathing. The sound of Hana whispering something to their father, he couldn’t quite make out. Then soft footsteps. The door creaking open. And finally, closing again with a soft click. Gone. Just like before. Sora didn’t cry. He didn’t feel much of anything really. Only the ache in his ribs had gotten worse. And the room felt even more quiet. He closed his eyes to try and sleep the time away.

. . Have A Wonderful Day - Poem by JAMES T. ADAIR Just in case nobody does say Have a wonderful day If you're at work and all the world seems to be at play Smile your work away If you're having trouble and it feels like double Do a good turn for someone else and ease their worried mind I think a little happiness you will find when you make an effort to be kind And someone else you might remind that there is hope among humankind If you're at school and you don't feel like you belong Keep in your heart a song Do your best as you sing along All your troubles and worries are here now but won't be long Someday soon you'll find a place you seek Exactly where you've belonged all along So in case nobody else would say I wish you a happy wonderful day All your worries and sadness wished away Today it's going to be better Find a little beauty in your day
