Leon didn't say much as he carried Asta, but his arms was wrapped tightly around him protectively. Each step felt like it carried the weight of the world. He felt num in his own blood soaked shirt. As Asta sobs rattling through Leon’s chest like tremors. The pain in Asta’s knee was evident. His body trembling, breath ragged, occasionally gasping from the sheer agony, although Leon tried to move him as gently as possible. But Leon knew that wasn’t the worst of it. It was the look in Asta’s eyes. That look had shattered something inside him. Leon had failed him. And no amount of blood he'd spilled tonight would make up for that. When the hospital was within view. They had to keep their distance. Two men covered in blood, one with a shredded shoulder and a healing gash over his chest. It would raise alarms, questions they couldn’t afford to answer. Fang had made that clear, even if Leon hated how coldly he executed the solution. Leon had begged Asta to let go… but Asta had clung to him with the desperation of someone who had lost everything. And then Fang had knocked him out. Leon had wanted to punch him or wanted to scream, to break something. But instead, he stood there... holding Asta’s unconscious body like it was made of glass. Like if he held him too tight, he'd break him completely. "You'll be safe now," Leon murmured as he gently laid Asta down in a wheelchair just outside the emergency entrance. He adjusted the collar of Asta's shirt, brushed his hair from his face. His fingers lingered there for a moment longer. He didn’t want to let go. He pressed the call button attached to the chair. A silent alarm that summoned staff for unattended emergency cases. It wouldn't take long. He knelt in front of Asta, his forehead brushing against the boy’s temple as he whispered, “I’m sorry… I’m so sorry.” And then he ran before the nurses could catch a glims of him ... [ 1 Hour Later ] Leon didn’t want comfort. He wanted answers. The moment he was back at the hospital after cleaning himself up. He wanted someone to tell him that Asta. His bright, stubborn, beautiful Asta would be okay. But deep down, he feared the worst. Asta would never play again. He had heard the doctor speak through the wall. “Crushed patella,” they said. “Displaced ligaments. Bone shatter. Multiple reconstructive surgeries.” Leon had stood there, unable to move. Unable to breathe. Because that injury… was all hos fault. Because Camill wanted to hurt him and used Asta to do it. And now the boy who once dreamed of being on a national court… Would be lucky to walk again. [ Present – 2:15 AM (Leon)] Leon was the hospital outside Asta’s door He wanted to see him. To hold his hand. To apologize again, even if it meant nothing. But what could he even say? “I’m sorry I destroyed your future?” “Sorry I wasn’t honest about who, what, I am?” “Sorry you’re in this bed because you loved me?” None of it would make it better. He hadn’t cried yet. But he was close. He should’ve been faster. Should’ve caught Camill before she ever got near Asta. Before she even had the thought to use him as a weapon. But he hadn’t. And now Asta was in that room, broken. His dreams shattered like his knee. Leon wasn’t just a liar. He was a coward. He had tried to live a double life. One bright carefree life with Asta, with love and laughter. And then the ugly one he kept in the shadows. Now the two worlds had collided, and Asta had seen it all. Leon closed his eyes. He had watched the light die in Asta’s eyes. Watched it flicker into something unreadable. He had saved Asta’s life… but destroyed it in the process. [“Do you really think love will protect you?”] Camill’s words still rang in his ears. He had fought to escape his family. Fought to build something normal, something good. Something with Asta. But Camill had ripped the veil away, and had showed Asta what Leon truly was. He stepped toward Asta’s door, hand hovering just inches from the handle. Then stopped. He stared at the nameplate on the wall. With Asta’s name printed in neat, black letters. His fingers curled against the wood, as if trying to absorb strength from the door itself. He wanted to see him. But Asta had just learned the worst news of his life. He was grieving. Not just the here and now but everything he had worked toward. Everything that made him him. And Leon was a symbol of what ruined him. He backed away from the door. But he didn’t go very far. Just down the hall, in the darkest corner of the floor, he sat again. Where he could keep watch. Where no one would see him break. Leon wasn’t sure what kind of man he’d become after this. Leon hadn’t moved in nearly an hour. Not physically. But in his head? He had paced a thousand miles. Every second that passed chipped away at his resolve. Not because he didn’t want to see Asta, but because he wasn’t sure if he should. If he had the right to. But eventually, silence became unbearable. And the longer he sat there, the more cowardly it felt. He stood up, each step toward the hospital room door slow, deliberate. The hallway was dim, the overnight lighting casting pale blue shadows across the floor. He could hear the soft hum of the machines inside. Could see the faint sliver of light leaking out from under the doorframe. His hand hovered again. No turning back this time. He pushed the door open gently. The room was quiet. The scent of antiseptic and faint bleach filled his nose instantly. The air was cold, sterile. He didn’t speak right away. Didn’t know how. The sight of Asta in the bed hit him harder than anything else that had happened tonight. There he was. Bandaged. Hooked to wires. Fragile in ways Leon had never imagined seeing him. The boy who had once bounced across the basketball court like the floor itself was an extension of him. Was now staring out a hospital window with metal rods inside his body. Just pain. So much of it. Leon’s jaw clenched. He stepped inside and let the door fall shut behind him with a gentle click. He moved to the foot of the bed. Heart pounding, throat tight. And just looked at him. Not with pity. But with guilt and a hollow kind of grief he couldn’t put into words. For a long moment, he said nothing. Then his voice came out after he'd swallowed hard. The machines beeped softly beside him. A cruel reminder that time was still moving forward. Even if everything else felt like it had stopped. “I know you’re not ready to talk to me.” He moved slowly to the chair beside the bed, but didn’t sit. Just rested his hands on the back of it, as if it were the only thing keeping him upright. “You might never be. And I wouldn’t blame you.” His gaze flicked to Asta for a brief second. He couldn’t stay there long. Not with the guilt burning so raw in his chest. “I told myself I was protecting you. That keeping the truth hidden was the right call…” He shook his head, jaw tightening. “But the truth is... I was scared.” His voice dropped to a whisper. “Scared you’d look at me differently if you saw what I was. What I am.” He sat down, finally. Shoulders hunched. He looked tired. Not just physically, but on a level that seeped into his bones. “I should’ve told you everything the second I realized I loved you... You probably don’t want to hear that right now. Or ever.” The chair creaked quietly beneath him as he leaned forward, arms resting on his knees. He stared at the floor. He hated this room. “Camill... what she did to you...” He paused, his knuckles whitening as his hands clenched together. “She used you to punish me. And I don’t know how to live with that. I never wanted you to get hurt” The silence that followed felt sharp, like it might cut him open from the inside. “I’m not asking you to forgive me,” he said finally. “I just… I needed to tell you that I’m still here.” His voice cracked. “No matter what. I’ll be here.” A long breath escaped him. “Even if you never want to see me again.…I’m sorry, Asta.” It was all he could say. The silence in the room stretched on, pressing down on his chest like weight he couldn’t lift. He didn’t move. He didn’t speak. He just sat there. Waiting. Expecting, because he deserved it. His eyes didn’t leave Asta. Every flicker of movement, every shift in breath, every slight twitch or change in the rhythm of the monitors. It pulled at something deep inside him, like guilt had grown teeth and was gnawing at the edge of his soul. He had fought beasts with claws the size of machetes. But he had never been more afraid than he was in this room. Waiting. His knuckles were pale where his fists had curled into themselves, and his forearms trembled with restraint. Not from anger — but from the brutal effort it took to stay still. Because he knew what this looked like to Asta. Leon had ripped away something from him. Something he could never have back.. Asta’s dreams. He didn’t need Asta to say it to know it was true. But he still waited for the words. Waited for the hurt. Waited for the moment Asta’s voice finally shattered the silence. For him to scream at Leon the way he needed to. For him to call him a monster. To say he ruined everything. That he never wanted to see him again. And if Asta did. Leon wouldn't argue. - He wouldn’t defend himself. Wouldn’t try to justify or explain or soften the blow. He would take it all. Because if screaming helped even a fraction of the pain ease from Asta’s body, then Leon would sit there and let it tear him apart, piece by piece. This wasn’t about him. He had already chosen to bear the consequences. He would carry the weight of what happened today for the rest of his life. But Asta.. Asta still had a future. Even if it looked different now from what he had expected it to be. Leon sat forward slightly, elbows on his knees. His eyes stayed low but still on the human. He didn’t want to make it harder for Asta to speak. -------------------------- (Morning) Sora stirred to consciousness slowly, like breaking through the surface of deep water. The air smelled clean, sharp with disinfectant. The sheets beneath him were stiff with hospital starch, and every inch of his body felt sore. An aching pain in his ribs, a dry tightness in his throat, and an overall heaviness that pressed him deeper into the bed. Maybe cause of the medics. He blinked against the morning light seeping in through the blinds. Pale and cold, it stretched in lines across the white walls, the monitor beside him, and the thin blanket pulled up to his chest. The room was quiet, save for the faint hum of air vents and the steady beep of his heart rate on the monitor. For a moment, he didn’t remember why he was here. Then it hit him and his chest tightened, not just from pain but from the memory of helplessness. Of being left behind. Of watching everything spiral beyond his control. He turned his head slightly and froze. Someone was sitting beside his bed. Fang. Sora stared for a moment, uncertain if he was still dreaming. Fang looked different in the daylight. The usual sharpness had dulled at the edges, worn down by exhaustion. His posture was slouched over as his sat with both arms and his upperbody resting on the bed close Sora’s. His eyes were closed, his breathing slow. He’d been there all night? Sora swallowed hard. He didn’t speak. Didn’t want to wake him. He just watched in silence, a strange tightness growing in his chest. Part of him wanted to say something. But the words stuck in his throat, crowded out by emotions he wasn’t ready to face. Instead, he lay still, eyes drifting back up to the ceiling. He didn’t feel okay. He didn’t feel strong. But he didn’t feel alone anymore either. A soft knock broke the silence. Sora turned his head slightly as the door eased open. A nurse stepped inside, clipboard in hand, wearing quiet shoes and a practiced expression. She didn’t seem surprised to find someone sitting beside his bed. If anything, she looked relieved. “Good morning,” she said gently, keeping her voice low. Sora didn’t speak. He gave the smallest of nods, just enough to show he was awake. The nurse walked in, checking the monitor beside him first, eyes flicking over his vitals. She moved with quiet efficiency, recording numbers, adjusting the IV drip, and briefly lifting the blanket to check his bandages. Her hands were steady, her expression neutral, but kind. “You’re stable,” she said. “Pain should be manageable for now. Let us know if it spikes again.” He nodded again, throat too dry for words. She hesitated then, glancing briefly at the figure beside the bed before returning her gaze to Sora. “I thought you’d want to know…” she began, her tone softening. “Your friend. The one who was missing. He was found last night. He’s here. Recovering.” Sora’s breath caught. He looked at her sharply now, fully alert. She gave a small, reassuring smile. “He’s stable. He was brought in a few hours after you. Surgery went well. He’s being monitored in another wing.” His hand twitched against the blanket. He didn’t trust his voice enough to speak. But the nurse seemed to understand. She gave a quiet nod, then stepped back toward the door. “I’ll let your doctor know you’re awake. Someone will be by with breakfast soon.” And just like that, she was gone. The door whispered shut behind her. Sora stared at the ceiling again, his heart thudding now. Asta was here and something in his chest loosened, just a bit. Enough for him to finally feel like he could breathe.
