Asher had faced grief before. Real grief. He’d seen packmates collapse in the dirt, screaming while blood-soaked. He’d heard the broken wails of mothers when a child didn’t come home. He knew what loss felt like into the bones. So when Kaito broke down, he was studying him closely. The room had gone cold despite the faint hum of the heater kicking on. The fluorescent lights overhead buzzed faintly, casting a sterile glow across the linoleum floor and the clinical white of the bedsheets now crumpled in Kaito’s trembling hands. The small man was crumbling in front of him. His hands shook as they gripped the edge of the bed, knuckles white, jaw clenched so hard it looked like it might snap. His breaths were ragged, stuttering out of him like his lungs didn’t know how to function anymore. Tears streaked down his face in uneven rivers, falling from a slack expression that shifted rapidly from denial, confusion, horror, disbelief and looping like a carousel that wouldn’t stop turning. And Asher didn’t do anything. Instead, his sharp golden gaze narrowed, trained on every twitch, every change in Kaito’s voice. He was trying to decide if what he was seeing was grief… or a performance. Some people were good at wearing pain like a second skin. Asher had interrogated liars who could cry on cue, break their voice in all the right places. And something about this still wasn’t sitting right. The timing. The magical taint. The sealed stairwell. It felt a little too textbook according to him. Kaito was sobbing, hands in his hair, whispering something under his breath that Asher couldn’t catch. The scent of fear and salt filled the room, but he still wasn’t sure. He didn’t interrupt. He just watched. When Kaito finally looked up through swollen, red-rimmed eyes and asked him. ["Are you a police officer?" ] Asher blinked slowly. The authority in his voice didn’t waver “I’m not a cop,” he said. “I am Alpha Asher, from the Odian Pack.” He took a step forward, slow, deliberate. The wolf in him crouched just under the skin, testing the air like it could sniff out live prey. Magical residue clung to Kaito like ash after a fire, faint but unmistakable. “Noah was a old friend of mine, and someone I considered as close to a packmember as a human can be.” Another step. Boots silent against the floor. When Asher spoke again, his voice had cooled to steel. “Now he’s dead. And you were the last person with him.” The faint beeping of the heart monitor beside the bed ticked faster now, mirroring Kaito’s spiraling state. But Asher didn’t back off. Although he did lower his voice. “I don’t know if you’re being honest, or a damn good actor,” he said bluntly. “But if you had anything to do with what happened to him, I will find out.” He tilted his head slightly, trying to decided rather or not to offer the other any comfort. “Now… calm yourself. What has happened can't be changed but the outcome of this conversation can. Breath, and lets try again." Asher pull over a chair to sit down beside the bed. If the shock actually was really and the person didn’t have anythingto do with Noah’s death. What good would it be to intimidate him more than necessary. "Did Noah say anything or behave strange? Anyone he was afraid of? Anything strange happening lately? Can you give me anything more that just white smoke. I suggest you answer truthfully, cuz if you don't—” His eyes glinted gold again, not bright, just enough to remind the man in front of him that he wasn’t easy fooled. “…you might not like what comes next.” His voice was less cold but the threat in his words were as clear as glass. Anything even just a tiny bit could help in getting to the bigger pictur.
