Asher hadn’t expected to get much sleep—but he also hadn’t expected this. The shift of movement beside him was quickly registered after a long time of quiet nothing. A subtle change in the mattress followed by a brush of warmth. His senses caught it instantly, even if his body stayed perfectly still. Then— an arm settled around his waist. Asher’s entire body went rigid. His heart didn’t just quicken—it slammed, hard and relentless against his ribs, each beat louder than the last, as if it were trying to betray him outright. Chester almostpurred in his mind.. fucking purred! Asher locked his jaw. Kaito was so close Asher was swimming in the scent spicy sweet scent of Kaito, mixed with the smell of his shampoo. He’d never smelt anything better in his entire life. He wanted Kaito to carry more of his scent. Although he couldn’t mark him with a bite yet, instinctly he wanted to make others aware that Kaito was taken. And with the way Kaito was unconsciously cuddling against him in his sleep. It was clear Kaito enjoyed Asher's scent too. It was instinct and the bond that attractive the two together —like magnets. But It also told Asher that both man and wolf trust him. From the way Kaito’s body yielding in his sleep, draw toward him. Asher felt it in every celle of his body. —the heat pressed along his side, the comfortably weight of Kaito’s arm, and the soft breathing against his shoulder. Asher exhaled through his nose, slow and controlled, though it did nothing to steady the pounding in his chest. Asher forced himself to remain exactly as he was—flat on his back, one arm still behind his head, the other resting where he’d left it. He didn’t move to touch him. Didn’t turn into him. But he didn’t pull away either. That… that he couldn’t do. Not when every nerve in his body had already mapped the shape of him there. Not when the bond—low and constant before—now thrummed like something alive beneath his skin, reacting to the closeness, the contact, the quiet, unguarded acceptance. His throat tightened slightly. Slowly—carefully—he lowered his free hand. Not to hold. Not to trap. Just… to rest. It hovered for a fraction of a second before settling lightly against the blanket near Kaito’s arm. Close enough to feel the warmth. Not enough to wake him. Chester made a low, approving sound. Asher ignored him. Minutes passed. Or hours. Time lost meaning somewhere between the steady rhythm of Kaito’s breathing and the relentless awareness flooding Asher’s senses. He could feel everything—the rise and fall of his chest, the faint shift when he settled deeper, the warmth that had fully seeped into his side now like it belonged there. Like it had always belonged there. His heart never slowed. Not once. At some point, Asher turned his head—just slightly. Just enough to look at Kaito. He was half-curled into him now, closer than before, the space between them completely gone. His grip on the blanket had loosened, fingers relaxed.. so defenseless. Asher’s chest tightened again. Carefully—so carefully it bordered on painful restraint—he shifted just enough to ease the angle of his shoulder beneath Kaito’s weight. Not to move him away. Just to make it… easier. More comfortable. For him. Chester went quiet. Not gone. Just… watching. For once, not pushing. Asher let his gaze linger for a moment longer before returning it to the ceiling. He didn’t close his eyes. Didn’t even try. There was no point. Not when every part of him was awake in a way that sleep couldn’t touch. So he stayed like that. Unmoving through the entire night— Listening to the steady rhythm of Kaito’s breathing. Feeling the weight of him curled against his side. ------- Morning came slowly. Asher felt it before he saw the soft golden rays of sun peek through the curtains. He still didn’t move, stayed still until he heard Kaito’s calm breathing shift and slight change in Kaito as he was waking up There was a pause. A long one. Asher could feel the hesitation, the realization dawning in on Kaito as he came to himself. The awareness of proximity of how close their bodies were. Kaito practically almost laying on top of him. 'Of what this looked like.' Asher jaw tightened just slightly as he tried to hid a smile. He could almost hear Kaito’s inner voice. [Oh] Asher turned his head slowly to look at Kaito. The other didn’t seem to notice he was looking at him. “As far as ways to wake up go…” Asher’s voice was low, slightly rough, but steady. “This is not a terrible one.” Asher shared a rare smile in that moment with Kaito. Although he hadn’t sleep a wink, it didn’t matter. He would love to wake up like this everyday. After a bite Asher’s gaze shifted, he didn’t want Kaito to feel awkward or pressure. Thinking Asher was expecting more “Did you sleep well” he asked thoughtfully after a moment. Trying to drag the time out just abit, before he had to move to get out of bed. But now Kaito was up, Asher had to move as he felt an urge that would need to be dealt with. Asher’s hand slipped back to his own side, breaking the small, unspoken compromise he’d allowed himself during the night. The absence of contact was immediate. Noticeable, but he ignored it. Swinging his legs over the edge of the bed, Asher sat up, running a hand briefly through his hair as if the night had been uneventful. As if his pulse hadn’t spent hours trying to break out of his chest. As if he hadn’t memorized the exact weight of the person beside him. “we should get up and dressed,” he said, voice returning fully to its usual calm, grounded tone. “We’ll head down for breakfast soon. It’ll be… less overwhelming if we don’t arrive late.. less people around.” It was practical reason. But as he stood, there was the faintest hesitation—so small it could have been missed. A flicker before it was gone. Asher feel silly for missing Kaito’s touch this soon after getting out of bed. "After breakfast we'll go to the training area and I'll walk you through some practical training, so you can learn about your new wolven abilities."
