Maybe Noah had died for something he never even knew about. Asher swallowed hard, the image of Noah’s body flashing behind his eyes. He felt the weight of it like a stone in his chest. “I’m not going to kill you,” he said quietly. “But I think someone else might have wanted to.” His gaze fell to the floor. The thought of telling Kaito that Noah might have died covering for him unwittingly. The thought twisted Asher’s stomach. Kaito was shaken enough. There was no reason in piling guilt on top of grief. “Where do you live?” Asher asked suddenly, his tone sharper than he meant. He needed to know. Needed to make sure Kaito didn’t walk into a trap. “You shouldn’t go back there alone. Not after this. For all we know, whoever did this might still be waiting for you.” He hesitated, his eyes narrowing slightly. “You’ll probably have to talk to the police at some point. But right now, it’s not safe.
