hi there

i wonder if there are many other readers past their 30 or 40s (i'm from the latest)

i discovered mangas some 20 years ago and read a lot for professionnal reasons at first, and then for simple pleasure

Once upon a job a friend and colleague handed me bl book that his wife enjoyed tremendoulsy. The books were in japanese which i do not read, and i though my eyes would fall from my head. I could not make sense of it of understand why she liked that kind of things :p

Thankfully internet brought some translation, and as my friend kepts teasing me about it, the seed of curiosity cannot help but grow in the human mind (^^;;;), i got to read the same title a few years later.

I found it tremendously surprising that i could read questions about love and relationship in a deeper perspective

I started to wonder if it was because there is no male female antagonism with specific roles and cultural bias.(somewhat outside of the oh so bothersome definition of a mars and a venus can never have the same orbits and seems to belong to different species)

I wondered if it allowed to question differently what we can be toward another, and what defines a relationship, how it grows without these inherited pink and blue boundaries

I found it immensly refreshing and probably often richer that most josei / seinen in that aspect

So i'm still reading bl once in a while, to explore these questions. I suppose that also limit mind readings as i care mostly for a feel of authenticity between characters.

I love funny, cute, sincere or deep kind of story. i do not mind the universe

i do not care for angst or violent story, i seriously feel sick with everything involving children and i have low tolerance to rape.

If you have any suggestions for a good read, i'll be really happy with it,

and of course if you have time to comment on your perception of bl manga and the reason for your interest, i'd be sincerly happy to know what you found in there too :)

I'd also be curious to know if you had the same perception toward the different nature of lovers interaction due to them being the same gender (and by that i mean, not the cost of it, but it's benefits)

:)

I'm rather new to BL as well and I'm 31, I turn 32 this year. I used to look down on yaoi until I ended up reading one by accident, and I realized that there was more to it than dumb silly porn (then again, that was my POV when I was younger, now I'm all for the smut cause I guess I'm more open-minded now that I'm older?).

I can honestly say I never gave a thought to how lovers interact just because they're the same gender. I grew up questioning all these gender roles imposed by our society so I've always made a point to tell myself that straight, gay, lesbian, whatever - people are complicated. Some couples may submit to standard gender roles, others may not. I do find it interesting when couples in BL go beyond the whole male/female dichotomy - I think Haru wo Daite Ita is a good example. It sort of pisses me off when couples waste time bickering over who is going to be top - of course, as a straight woman, I cannot provide an opinion as to how this transpires in reality.

Personally, I think what draws me in the most is the notion of a love facing obstacles - whether it's Buffy and Angel, two guys, or the bickering badass couple, that's the kind of romance I'm into. And I think many BL mangas/novels have great stories.

Hello @ blueboygirl!

Welcome to the forum~!

Wait, your read mangas as a job? that used to be my dream job T__T i mean, how cool it is to be able to read mangas everyday and get paid for it? eheh.. but then i think it would probably be different if you're reading for work rather than for pleasure.

yup, yup! i agree. bl genre in general gives us at least a little glimpse of how same sex relationship works. though not all of it are accurate representation of rl, since most yaoi/bl mangas were created by female mangakas and catered (mostly) for female audience, we get the gist of it every now and then and that makes us think, yeah? nevertheless it's an enjoyable read and sometimes it gives me something that i look forward to, for example, a good plot, characters, fluffiness ̶(̶a̶n̶d̶ ̶m̶ ̶o̶n̶ ̶m̶ ̶a̶c̶t̶i̶o̶n̶ ̶m̶e̶h̶e̶h̶)̶ etc.

hmm.. i'm bad at suggestions, but you can always check out this

Hello and welcome! If you were wondering about stuff to read there's a BL manga reading challenge going on right now. I notice a lot of people are doing it and I've seen people throwing around suggestions on what to read. Maybe you'll find some good things there!

Welcome to the YO Forums site!! You have an awesome job, I'm so jealous of you. As for what questions you were asking about relationships and BL in general, I totally agree with the above user. I'm 31 years old and single, straight woman also.
