Surviving Yewfield

Prologue

Though it was already half past seven on a Monday morning, Yewfield was as dead as a doornail. The threatening clouds overhead had covered the town in a single, dull shade of grey, and the dusty streets were completely deserted. When the report of a zombie outbreak hit the news, people had initially chose to be more cautious. But the infection quickly escalated within a couple of days to a point where everyone knew someone who was infected, causing a wave of panic throughout the town. The Government had sent in a team of Special Forces to take out the growing number of zombies, but was quickly drawn back within days following rumours of there being a serum that can reverse the zombie effect, suggesting that killing the zombies will be morally wrong. The city has thus been closed in to prevent the zombies from spreading further than the town, but as a consequence, the remaining survivors were trapped inside the town with the zombies. All major routes in and out of the town were barricaded, leaving the forest as the only access to and from the town that was unbarricaded. The Government, though, was not very worried about this since the forest was one that sat on a range of hills, and one that stretched away for miles and miles. On the outside of the town, politicians continue to argue as no conclusive evidence has been found with regards to the rumoured serum, and on the inside, the survivors continue to fend for themselves; some succumbed to the depressive situation and turn into one of them, while others held onto whatever fragments of hope they have.

The town was not equally rampaged. Water supply and power were still available in the northern region of Yewfield, where the devastation was minimal, but the eastern and southern regions of Yewfield were struggling to support any survivors. The smart and observant ones have noticed that zombies react to light and sound, but have poor vision for details and sense of smell, while the anxious ones found themselves committing mistakes, some too costly for their own good.

The knot in his stomach slowly loosened as he took another puff from the cigarette. Blood rushed through his pale fingers and stiff cheeks, and just for a moment he felt a sense of calmness, like everything was just a bad dream, and soon he would wake up to the warm morning sun, and the cheerful greeting of his 5-year old niece. Soon…But now, he could feel the cold floor of the convenience store under him, and he could hear the strong whistle of the autumn wind against the window. He pulled his legs closer to his body, and buried his face in his knees. Soon…

Keith had somehow found himself home alone when everything happened; he did not know if his cousin and his family had left, or if they had turned into one of them; neither did he know where he was when the barricading happened, or why he was still in the town; it was as if he had a traumatic amnesia of the entire event. Being alone with a so-called traumatic amnesia was apparently not bad enough; Keith was in an unfortunate situation of being terrible at survival in the wilderness. He was physically fit, but he was sheltered. His only ability to survive in this disastrous situation is his stamina and the ability to outrun the zombies, without which he would be un-dead quite instantly.

But it was not all a streak of bad luck for Keith; his cousin’s flat was in the northern region of Yewfield where the damage was minimal, and there was enough food in the flat for two weeks. He had decided to keep a low profile, and trap himself inside the flat till the food ration runs out, after which he would starve until help comes around. However, on his first day alone, he had found himself on his toes needing to run to the convenience store across the street. The only packet of cigarette he had on himself had quickly vanished in just under six hours, and on the spur of the moment he had dashed out of his flat – after locking it that is – and made his way for the convenience store.

The door to the convenience store was locked, and so he had to break in – an act which he regarded as completely and utterly stupid when he regained some senses after taking a puff from his favourite cigarette brand. He was horrified for a moment, and quickly replaced the door – as well as it could stand that is – and pushed a rack against it. He then went on to curling himself up in a corner with packets of cigarettes lying all around him hating himself, and hoping that he had not trapped himself in the convenience store with a zombie or two.

Soon, he told himself.

Bennie yawned and stretched, giving the black cat on his chest a scratch under the chin. He smiled as the sound of purring filled the room, the cat kneading her little paws against his chest. After a few moment he eased the cat away and got himself out of bed. It was hard sleeping in the basement but he no real alternative if he wanted to get a decent rest. He put on an old pair of camo pants, and a singlet, stepping into his worn and comfortable combat boots. Some things apparently never changed and he could never really describe the comfort the sturdy foot-ware gave him.

The fluro flickered, stopping him in his tracks. Was it just the fluro, or was the power failing too? He grimaced, even though he had a generator, he couldn't run it in the basement with him unless he was intending to gas himself. He snorted Hey, there's an idea, when it all gets too much i'll just flick the gennie on and go to sleep... He shook his head to clear his head. That's quitter talk, and I'm no quitter! he thought vehemently to himself. The flickering light seemed to stabilise itself, it's harsh white glow illuminating the room once more.

His heavy boots were deceptively quiet as he made his way to the basement door, picking up the titanium baseball bat that was leaning casually against the wall. Even though he'd taken the time to makes sure all the doors and windows were locked above, he couldn't be too careful, to complacent about "security". He was kinda paranoid that way... after leaving the military, he'd bought the house because of it's large basement; well, bunker really. It had been owned by one of those conspiracy nutters previously and the concrete bunker/basement underneath was to survive a nuclear holocaust. It was deep underground, concrete reinforced walls, a huge metal reinforced door, ventilation shafts that sucked the air in from outside whilst pushing the air back out again... he couldn't gas himself if he tried... genius in design really, it had actually bankrupted the previous owner, so it was his now for a discount price.

Lady Luck had smiled on him at that point. Two weeks after settlement, the outbreak had occurred. He'd enough time and wits about him to raid the hardware store where he'd been working, a quick trip to the camping store whilst everyone was panicking and looting the supermarkets, and he'd pretty much gotten everything he needed to survive.

He pulled back the window cover on the door and peered through. He couldn't see anything, but that didn't necessarily mean that nothing was there. Unlocking the door, he pulled it open slowly, the bat at the ready in his other hand, he stepped out of the basement and into his house. The cat brushed against his legs as she slipped out, causing his heart to jump in his chest. He let out a sigh of relief as the cat disappeared into the house. That was another thing he could be thankful for; the cat seemed to know when it wasn't safe to come out, refusing to leave his bed. The fact that she'd dashed out meant that the coast really was clear.

He pulled the door shut behind him, locking it with the keypad in the wall - even if the power went out, the keypad operated on solar, a small panel on top of the roof. Failing that, the whole thing was like some huge safe door with a combination lock - that way just took longer and if a horde of undead were trying to eat you, you didn't really have a lot of time to be faffing about with delicate locks...

Today was another day to survive.

He was defencelessly walking around the streets for 3 days already.

Andro had been out in the open ever since he climbed down from his loft. The zombie that barged into his room had freaked him out – so much that he mindlessly killed it and hurriedly went out through the fire exit. He had been thinking that it was a stupid thing to do considering that he had left his supplies to rot; those supplies could have fed him to his heart’s content. Unlike this pack of protein bars, he thought, referring to the only pack he had snagged from an apartment’s unguarded kitchen.

Snagging food and water and breaking into empty apartments and buildings were two things that Andro did for survival. He had managed to lurk around like a cat albeit not perfectly. He had only two weapons: his wit and his little knowledge of zombie behaviour, which he has known through experience or through the news. If he would be so honest to himself, he wasn’t really that defenceless but he had little faith in his strength. As a result, Andro sometimes (completely) forgot that he had a wire cutter somewhere in the depths of his cargo pants’ pockets.

But it was not Andro’s intent to kill zombies; they were still humane after all. Just mutated humans, he thought. It would make me less of a person if I’d go around and enjoy a killing spree, wouldn’t it? The fact that there were rumours of a drug to revert their zombie-ness was also one of the things that kept him from swinging his cutter around.

However as long as they weren’t cured, was I safe?

Andro had, now, hid behind a box of cartons and thought about what to do the next day. His stomach was starting to grumble; to Andro, it felt like it was eating itself. “Stomach-cannibalism.” The sun already set about an hour ago and he was enveloped in darkness. He scooted closer to the wall, careful not to make a sound. He thought about his brother whom he had lived with before he moved into town.

Was he safe? Had he evacuated?

Andro sighed and closed his eyes. Someday, he thought, I’ll meet you again, Kael.

Kim sighed as he gave his empty cafe's customer area a look. He had barricaded the wide cracked windows with his precious furniture and a bread box or two. The people that was with him as the outbreak hit the town, had left him a couple of days ago, as the seemed to think that they couldn't stay at the cafe any longer.

For Kim it wasn't a real loss, it only made his food rations last longer. In the beginning when the power still was on in the south part of town he had managed to make a lot of hard and long lasting bread for himself and the poor costumers that ended up with him. Making any more bread after that was out of the question as the ingredients to make them already was gone.

Water or drinks wasn't a problem yet either as he still had cans and bottles in the fridge in the back room. The ones he had in the customers' area the people that left him had taken with them. He hadn't complained as he really wanted them to stay safe and healthy too. They did promise to tell the outside of his existence in the cafe when help arrived.

Kim's idea was to wait for help, or someone more knowable in this kind of situation before he left the cafe. But the truth was that the zombies really scared him and not for anything in the world he did want to go out there as long as they roamed the streets.

Kim's smart statement to why he shouldn't follow the others was that - if there was any other confused survivors out there that happened to find his cafe, with the small sign on the top of the cracked windows "Safe inside" - then he would be able to help them with some hard bread and a can or bottle of something to drink until they could decide on what their next step would be.

But as long as help didn't arrive Kim would stay in his cafe, re-reading the now old newspaper from the day the zombies showed up.

When the undead epidemic had struck, Zack had been sitting in class, listening to the lecture on the new United Nations treaty considering the sterilisation of disabled children, taking notes as diligently as he always did. The fourth year student was happy with his work, knowing that the assignment they were going to be given (it was obvious) was going to be so much easier, due to having worked with a firm the year before who had to consider a case issue of it.

Yet, when the zombies had started to spread through the lower levels of the campus, it was made apparent that this was not going to be a good day, nor was it going to be good for Zack. He had grabbed his belongings and run as soon as he heard the news, from a very tattered looking administration officer who was bleeding from one shoulder, shouting through the corridors while he was still in his lecture. After taking a moment to run to the top of the lecture hall and take a look out the windows, he realised that this freakish happening...was real. He could see it with his own two eyes. Yet still, what was he going to do? He had run, his mind racing, and just managed to find his bike in the upper carpark before the same admin officer who had been directing students to this carpark to help each other get out, had fallen to the ground, frothing at the mouth, his skin slowly flaking and drawing taut.

Zack had screamed, terror filling him as he pedalled out of the carpark, fully intending to get home, lock himself in his apartment and bar the doors. That was what he had seen in all those stupid zombie movies his friends had made him watch...but he was terrified! What was going to happen to him? To school? To his friends, his professors? To his- his parents!

Zack never made it to his apartment, instead he had made his way onto the streets only to find that they had spread into the main sectors of town and so...travel was impossible. He practically dashed, his bike tyers squeeling underneath him as he made his way somehow across the street, weaving through abandoned cars towards one of the stores across the street, a bookstore. He shoved his bike inside and moved to lock the door- there was nobody there, but there were people- things outside. So here...was better than out here. He barricaded the door with one of the shorter bookshelves, needing to stop to breathe a few times, and pulled the blinds, before then realising...he had to check to see that nobody was in the back...

Keith was curled in his corner when he heard a rustle from the back of the convenience store. A chill ran down his spine. He could feel the hair on his arms stood erect on their roots, and his heart pounding against his ribcage threatening to shatter it. Sweat dribbled from his forehead. What is he supposed to do?

For a moment, he sat there petrified like a statue. The noise had ceased. But for just a moment. He heard the rustle again, this time louder and clearer, and he was sure that it was not his imagination or delusion. He had only been smoking cigarettes, not marijuana, or weed, or whatever else that give people crazy hallucinations, and he was pretty sure that he was not dreaming or had gone crazy. The noise had now turned into more than just a rustle: a thud, and a thump, and a…groan.

He jumped to his feet; his pupils were dilated, his face flushed, his hands soaked in sweat. It was the last thing that he wanted to happen. He took hold of the rack that he had used to support the broken door, and heaved it aside. The strength in him seemed to be waning as the groan and thud became more apparent, revealing the identity of the trespasser. Fear was speeding through his body, through his mind, making his hands shake, his chest tighten, his legs weak. He could hear the blood ringing in his ears, the heart hammering against his chest, the heavy breathing through his mouth.

Suddenly there was a loud bang. The rack had apparently moved too far to hold the broken door still. Dust was blown everywhere from the sudden fall of the door, and the chilly autumn wind rushed into the small convenience store, brushing against his pale skin. But he could not feel the coolness, not when his body was generating so much heat.

Keith stared at the fallen door, his fingers still wrapped around the metal rack. Had he attracted the attention of the dreaded one? Well, he supposed it knew of his presence before this occurred anyway. No, he did not know, he could not think. It was not the right time to trouble himself with such silly thoughts.

He took to his heels without further thought of what was in the convenience store or what was out in the streets. He just ran. As far as his feet could take him. And anywhere they take him, even if it was towards the south where the others are fighting much harder to survive. He just ran. Fear had pushed him.

Bennie wasn't sure how far the damage went, nor how far the infestation had spread, but he made the effort to investigate as much of his surroundings as possible. Houses had been abandoned, their occupants either fled or infected... he didn't think of it as looting, but if he was going to stay put, then he needed supplies, and he only took what he needed - food, water and survival supplies, there was no point raiding for cash or valuables, after all, they were useless right now. He'd never actually come across a fellow "survivor" in his travels, though he'd encountered infected. He'd been lucky so far, it had only been one or two. He wasn't sure how he'd go about dealing with a "horde" of them. Bennie wasn't sure what he'd actually do if he'd encountered a fellow survivor. His time in the military made him painfully aware that human nature wasn't and cuddly as humanitarians would have you believe, and the "fight or flight" reasoning made people do... some rather unkind things.

With all this in mind, he packed his backpack for another excursion outside. He'd made sure he had rations to last him a few days in case he was trapped somewhere. He'd made a map of the surrounding area, carefully crossing off the houses that he'd checked, not wanting to waste time by going over old ground. He consulted this map for a few moments, planning which direction to take, before carefully folding it and packing it into one of the pouches. When he'd finished prepping, he picked up the titanium bat and headed outside. He wasn't sure what the day would bring; the only thing he could do was make sure he was prepared for whatever it was.

Andro did not want the night to leave but the sun was already peeking out of the horizon and he knew that he needed to make his move.

The man semi-squatted and peeked; there were zombies -- no more than five -- not far from him. Andro had taken out his shears and slowly crawled out of the fort he made the night before. He had two options: one, to charge at the clueless zombies and two, to climb the wire gate just behind him.

Andro chose the latter.

He slowly backed up, eyes on the zombies in case they spot him. It was a wrong move -- backing up with his eyes up front, he meant -- because his back hit the wire gate with a clang and the zombies whirled their heads at him, mouth open and drooling.

Panicking, Andro scrambled up the gate. His head throbbed, heart pounding so hard like the first time he saw a zombie up close. He jumped over and landed on all fours. He was thankful that the infected were mindless enough not to climb up the gates lest he’d be one of them right now. Sighing, he pushed himself up and ran to the other end of the alleyway.

Andro slightly skidded to a stop as soon as he rounded up the corner. The infected has increased in number, filling the large street with groans and slouched bodies. What the f— Andro didn’t know where to go. But inside. Again. He figured that if he could just get to one of the doors…

Andro took a deep breath and tightly held unto his shears before running out into the street with light footsteps.

Kim quietly closed his newspaper and put it to the side with a sigh. Being alone wasn't that big of a deal for him, but with the zombies roaming the streets outside - that was a different kind of situation. Luckily no one of them had managed to get inside his cafe, the blockade he built together with the guests, that left, were still holding strong. And even if the door was blocked by the blockade, he still had the backdoor in steel that easily held of the zombies if they tried to take that way in.

At the moment it was quiet, almost too quiet. With a thoughtful look on his face he walked up to one of the windows and peeked outside between the furniture used as a blockade. For some reason it seemed like the zombies had left the street on outside, but Kim figured that they might have caught up on something. With another sigh he walked to the back of the cafe, to hear if there would be anyone that still knew how to talk and act human and wanted to enter.

He picked up the tray he had placed next to the door and he stood there ready to do something if something needed to be done, like he always did when there was any kind of strange movements on the street outside.

Zack turned very slowly towards the back room, gazing around at the strewn books and papers, knowing someone must have abandoned this place pretty quick. If there was something back there...he needed to find out. There was no way he could afford to stay in a place he hadn't checked...but either way he had just barricaded the door. If there was someone in the back, he was locked in with them...it. They.

Taking a deep, unsteady breath, he looked around for some kind of weapon. This was a book store for gods sake, the only things that were remotely weapons that he could see were the stapler and the scissors. He took up the pair of good quality paper scissors, and noticed an umbrella leaning precariously against one wall. He grabbed it and headed through the shelves. The store was small, he could see down all three isles from the front of the store. Approaching the door slowly, he held the umbrella out before him, taking one last deep breath.

The whole store was silent; no radio, no nothing, no footsteps...Zack slid towards the doorway, knowing that very well there could be...something beyond that. He bit his lower lip in horror, shaking his head. Oh no...if there was... but no! If he was going to do this-

Zack took a deep breath, and rounded the corner with a cry into the storeroom, the umbrella poised to attack.

  • 2 weeks later...

The muscles in his legs had started to ache when Keith finally came to his senses. He had no idea where he was, or what the time was, or what just happened - he felt disoriented. The sprint had now turned to a slow jog. There was no way that he would let his guards down, not when he was out in the streets, exposed to the nightmare of the city.

For a moment, a sense of vulnerability filled his chest, making his already hard-pounding heart beat even faster and harder. He had no idea where he should seek shelter, and he was not sure he was way too keen on trapping himself inside a building with the dreaded one again. Besides this time he might not be too lucky and be faced with a hoard of them. The thought sent chills down his spine, and he quickly shook it off his panic-stricken mind.

Keith let out a sigh, and slowly made his way round the buildings, trying to figure out where he was. Not being able to tell, he began to attempt to familiarise himself with the surroundings. Might come in handy at a later time, he guessed - that is if he could continue to remain alive, and not turn into one of them. Turning a corner, he caught a glimpse of a man with a titanium bat in his hand. Suddenly blood rushed to his face, making his pink cheeks flushed red. But this time it was out of joy and gladness. A living being! With a wave of hand, he called out at the top of his lungs, "Mister!"

The streets seemed to be relatively quiet, there being no sign of life from either humans or undead. The bat was casually draped over his shoulder, but he was ready to swing it at a moments notice, thanking whatever deity that was listening, that the undead were "shufflers" and not something out of 28 Days. If these guys could actually run, he wasn't sure if he would even risk being outside...

The silence was broken by a shout. "Mister!" Bennie turned his head towards the sound, the bat already swung down at the ready. "Not so loud!" He hissed, "Do you want to bring them swarming over here?!" He held the bat out, keeping the stranger from getting too close to him, "Nothing personal, but I'm not sure how the infection spreads; I don't need you suddenly trying to snack on me, so until I can be sure, don't try to touch me... or I WILL use this bat here and end it all for you." Bennie didn't really mean to sound so... nasty, but his survival was at stake here, this stranger could have been scratched or bitten, and now infected without realising it, or considering that no one really knew how it all started, it could be just like a virus; the body coming down with a fever before being taken over...

He softened his tone slightly, "if you turn out to be ok, and you don't have anywhere you can stay, well, you can stay with me..." he cleared his throat, "though god help you if you try to screw me over, I WILL fucking kill you... just so we're clear on that. You can call me Ben if you live long enough, forgive me if I don't shake your hand until then." He rubbed his chin in thought, an idea coming to him, "Look, we will make this easy. If you come home with me now, my cat will be able to tell if you're infected or not... if the cat thinks you're fine, you can decide what you want to do. If the cat thinks you're infected, I'll put you out of your misery... before you turn or something..." his hand went from his chin to the back of his head, still rubbing, now suddenly feeling a bit awkward.

Andro almost ran into -- like literally into -- a bunch of zombies. Luckily for him, he was quick as a cat, running around them without making much sound. He climbed unto the windowsill of a small cabin, trying to get in. He stopped short, however, seeing that the infected have started infecting the people who were inside. The front door's locked so they probably went in the back door...just damn it. Andro sighed, it was the 5th house with nothing but the zombies inside. He jumped down and retreated, running away lest those things inside have sensed him.

His feet were tired now and he rounded up into an alleyway to get some momentary rest when he got into a combat with a zombie -- yet again. Andro wasn't paying attention as he walked when he suddenly bumped into the big guy. He looked up and his heart raced. Before he was crushed and bit, he dug the pliers into the man's skull and ran away. Not far away, he saw a barricaded store (A cafe? A bookstore?). He ran as fast as he could and peeked into one of the few unblocked windows, waving his hands frantically. "Anyone there?" he hissed, knocking slightly on the glass. The blood ran cold through his veins and it pumped through each of them so hard that he could almost feel them pulsating from his skin.

Andro peeked into the book cafe again. He had a good feeling about this. He just hoped that it was right.

It was boring to just stand there and his grip of the tray weakened and changed into a more relaxed stance as he still couldn't hear anything from the other side of the door. It were getting truly boring and slow theses last days he spent alone.

Kim jumped in surprise as he heard something at the front of the store. Quickly he changed the grip he had of the plate tray and went to see what it was. It did sound like a living human.

Kim stopped as he could see that there was someone on the other side of the glass that didn't act as a zombie would.

"The backdoor, to the back." he yelled out and hoped that person would hear him, or at least be able to see him as he did the biggest movements he could to gesture that the person should get to the back of the cafe.

The way the person acted he figured that it was a situation that needed quick actions to come out from alive.

"The back, the back, the back!" he yelled and waved his tray towards the back of the store. He didn't move from his place until he was sure that the other person would understand him.

"Aahh!" He said as he swung the broom round, bracing himself to hit something, only to- meet thin air. A breath flew from his lungs, bright eyes softening as he realised that yes, he was indeed alone. He didn't even know how long he could survive...this place looked like a book cafe, but other than that, he wasn't sure how much food was here or how that would affect everything...

Zack froze as he heard the knocking on glass, the sound of people. He gave a start and ran towards the front of the store, instantly seeing the shape of a person there before the window, knocking and waving. He held the broom between his hands tightly, but quickly realised; this person wasn't a zombie. He rushed forward, into sight, and waved his hands towards the back, yelling through the glass. "Come to the back!" He jerked his head before he ran towards the back of the store, but noticed for a moment that there was a cafe across the street as well; and a person in the window.

Thank god; there were more people alive than he'd thought! Zack sped to the back of the store, and for the first time examined the lock. It was a basic deadlock so he would have to put something here. But he breathed in twice...there was a person out there. "You there?" He called through the door.

Instinctively, Keith raised both his hands in the air. He had stopped running, and stood still just inches away from the titanium bat that would crack his skull in a swing if he made any sudden movements. His heart beat had begun to rise again, and his breathing heavy. Sweat broke across his forehead, and a cold chill ran down his spine. The confrontation was not as he expected. The thought of his head being smashed into a million pieces did not sit well with him.

But as Bennie continued to speak, he felt a little more at ease, and his biological reaction toned down. Unlike Bennie, Keith took it that Ben was a human simply by the fact that he did not look or sound like something un-human. He was simply glad by that, and even more when he was told a name, a solution, and an extensive notion of survival, indicating human thoughts; not that he knew if zombies were capable of such cognitive processing - he had not come face-to-face with one for that matter - but he would like to believe that zombies were not cunning and sly to lull him into a false sense of security.

It did not matter if Ben did not believe his cleanliness - he could not ascertain that for himself either - he was just glad that he was not alone, and that he had someone to depend on. If he was infected, then Ben would put him to sleep in a way he hoped was not so brutal, or at least he would be sedated prior to being brutally murdered. He would not mind that since death is the end of life, and he would not be able to perceive anything when he was gone. He might do if he was a zombie, and he preferred not to be one that he feared. It did not seem like a good idea of a life to him.

A smile crept across his pale face, and he offered a hand, but quickly withdrew it, remembering Ben's disinterest for any bodily contact.

"I'm Keith," said he.

There was a moment of silence as he turned the various thoughts in his head. He should probably take on the offer and go along with this man to his house and be checked by his cat. He was not sure how it could work, but it was better than being left exposed in the street.

"I'll go with you and get checked by your cat," he continued. Again, a brief pause as he watched Ben rubbing his head somewhat awkwardly. His fingers twitched slightly as his mind attempted to grasp an idea in his mind. When he spoke again, his voice was lower in tone, "Thank you Ben."

Ben nodded once. "Pleased to meet you Keith" he said, "The house is back this way, so if you'd like to follow me, or better yet, excuse my suspicious nature and you can go in front of me. Don't worry, I won't off you, just that if you're in front of me, I can keep an eye on you." Bennie pointed with his chin in the direction they needed to go, "This way..."

The way was clear, he'd "disposed" of any undead as he went, making sure to never take on more than one at a time. It was never worth the risk to try any more than that, but always, without fail, the bodies were never there when he came back. He shuddered to think of what happened to them. "We will still need to move quietly, but it's not very far to go" he said by way of conversation, trying to reassure Keith that he wasn't just going to smack him in the back of the head without provocation. He didn't deal well with "civilians", he was used to having orders obeyed without question, and in turn obeying his own orders without question. He was by no means a meat-head, but from experience he knew that there was always more to it than at face value, and sometimes you just really didn't need to know.

Before long, they were back at his house, the cat sunning herself on the front porch. Her ears perked up when she saw him and she stretched herself out with a huge yawn before padding her way over to where the two men were. She sniffed carefully at Keiths leg before eventually rubbing her head against it before looking up with what Bennie thought was a queationing look. "There you go, the cat says you're good to go. Would you like to come inside for a hot drink?"

Andro held his breath as he waited for something good to happen.

Then there it was. Or more like, there he was, waving at him frantically with a broom in hand. He came closer and peered, leaning closer to the window to see what the waving meant. By the looks of it, the man was motioning him to come to through the back of the shop and so Andro stepped back and looked at the side of the shop to see a small alley. Must be through that alley, he sighed, luckily no zombie could think about fitting itself in there.

Just as he was about to send an okay signal, the man already jerked his head and ran to the back of the store and in his place, through the window, he saw a reflection of a man holding some pan from inside of the cafe across the street.

Another survivor?

Andro thought he'd get back to him later.

The man ran to through the alley and to the back of the store. He heard a faint "you there?" and smiled slightly to himself, thankful that he really was not the only person alive in this town. He raised a hand, his breathing and pulse hastening as he knocked on the door and said, "I'm here. Please open up."

Kim wasn't sure anymore if there really was anyone outside his window. Quietly he lowered his tray and squirted his eyes to see if he could see anyone on the other side of the barricaded glass.

"I'll just go back to the door..." he said for himself and took some few steps backwards before he turned and walked over to the door again. If it was his imagination he had done all that waving for nothing. But just to be on the safe side he stood by the back door to listen if there were anyone that would have seen or heard him earlier.

A somewhat crazed, hopeful smile flitted across his face as he heard the guys voice, and he took one deep breath, steadying his hands on the doorhandle. There was someone else in this hellhole. For all that was holy by God, there was someone else alive. Zach could t quite comprehend it for a moment, his mind simply telling him; human, alive and help.

"Okay...I'm gonna open the door...one, two...three!" With a sharp tug, the student pulled back he door and stepped wide, allowing the guy room as he knew he would probably need it. A streak rushed into the back storage room and he slammed the door shut after it, the sound echoing in the small space.he locked and quickly barricaded of again, pulling acoss a lower bookshelf. Dark blues turned as he fell back against the door, the broom still clutched firmly in a clenched fist as he looked the guy up and down. He looked a little worse for wear. "You okay?"

Keith trod in front of Bennie as carefully and silently as he could, turning his head around every two seconds to check if the well-built man was still behind him. Not that he was afraid the combat-proficient male would somehow be ambushed by cunning zombies; it was all for his own good - he was making sure that Bennie was still there watching his back and making sure he was not attacked by any zombies. Every step he took was like playing gamble on a mine field - and one that was played by an inexperienced fool. The thought of coming face-to-face with a single zombie, let alone a horde of them, sent a cold chill down his spine.

After what seemed to him like a millennium, they finally came to a house where a cat was basking under the warm sun on the front porch. It was then that, for the first time since his departure from the haven in the North, Keith became suddenly conscious of the blazing sun set against the bright blue sky, occasionally obscured by lingering soft, white clouds. His gloomy mood had apparently made him see everything around him in grey lenses. He let out a sigh of relief - the good weather had lulled him into a false sense of security.

His fingers twitched and sweat droplets began to form across his forehead as he watched the cat approached him. What if he or she, whatever its gender was, decided that he had to be shot dead based on an arbitrary cat instinct? He did not understand cat language - that is, if cats do have anything at all resembling human language - and would not be able to comprehend its actions, and even if he did understand it, he could not be too sure as to the validity of its decision. Whatever it was, his life depended on this cat, and he hoped, fingers crossed, that the cat's decision would be in his favour.

The gentle touch against his leg brought another sigh of relief out of him, and the confirmation of his cleanliness, worded verbally in a language he understood, made him feel even better. This cat sure knows...he tilted his head slightly and peered down at the cat's body...her stuff.

"Yes, please!" he replied in a high note, a smile carved across his face. Looks like the day was changing for the better. Quickly he tailed Bennie into the house, and almost instantly curiosity took hold of him and he tried to catch a glimpse of everything that they passed. It seemed like a big house for one person. Or perhaps there was someone else here other than Bennie and the cat. A wife? Maybe children too?

"Do you live here on your own?" he asked, "No wife? Children? Girlfriend? Have you been here for a long time? Are you local?" Keith felt the urge to continue with his string of questions, but decided to restrain himself for now, just in case Bennie threatened to bash his head with the titanium bat for being nosy.

He was glad to see that the inside of the house was pretty much the same as he'd left it before, meaning that no one had come in to raid his belongings. He did take care to lock the front door if he did leave the house, but that wouldn't stop someone from breaking in if they really wanted to be inside. The only place they couldn't get into was the basement, no matter how hard you tried to break down the door, you'd need a stick of dynamite to do it, and then if you were that desperate, then surely there would be better things to be blowing up... besides, he figured that if anyone had broken into the house, then the cat would have done a runner elsewhere. As Bennie led Kieth through the house and into the kitchen, the cat followed them inside looking up at him expectantly.

Bennie had to smile at the questions, they were fueled by relief and of course curiosity. "Errr, I had a girlfriend a while back but we broke up just before this... zombie thing happened, so at the moment it's just me and the cat." A small smile played around his lips as he took cups from the cupboards and put the kettle on to boil. Whilst the electricity was still running, then he'd still use the kettle to boil water which he'd get from his stash of bottles. He still wasn't keen on the idea of drinking the water out of the tap, and wasn't even sure if boiling it would be enough... no one knew what caused the outbreak and for all anyone knew, it could be the very water in the taps... "I've got just plain tea and some questionable coffee; questionable only because it's swill as far as I'm concerned. The one thing that I do miss in all of this, is proper coffee, not this instant shit." He gave Kieth a lopsided grin.

As he waited for the jug to boil, Bennie thought about the other questions that Kieth had asked. The kid seemed fairly harmless, and probably wasn't actually a "kid" at all, but Bennie tended to call everyone "kid" - something to do with his life experiences he guessed, he felt considerably older than everyone else, and "kid" just became the default term. "I was... a soldier before, but I served my time and discharged and moved here. I was lucky enough to be able to buy this house when I did and I worked in the hardware store a few blocks away..." As he poured the hot water into the cups he decided to ask a few questions of his own, "What about you? What did you do before... all this?"

Andro stumbled. The door had opened just in time he leaned in and listened against the door. He looked up half-crouching and smiled sheepishly. "I'm okay....I'm okay," he said, straightening himself up. He looked at the other guy momentarily before realizing something and finally closing the door. He held a hand out and said, "Andro." He looked around. "Have you been staying here for long? Have you had any decent food around?"

Kim let go of a sight as he slowly got back to his counter and the newspaper. He truly wasn't sure anymore of what to do. Maybe he should have joined the people that left him there? But what had happened to them? were they even still alive?

Kim didn't like the situation one bit, not at all. But as the time alone went by he started thinking that maybe he should counter his fears of the zombies and sneak away on his own? Bring what he could and leave his cafe.

But then again. What if there were any other survivors that needed his help?

He looked on the sign in the window that said "Safe inside" and with a sigh he walked up to the window. Thinking of a way to bring it down. He didn't want to lure anyone in to his cafe is he didn't to stay there.
