What lies beneath

As the merman pulled him deeper under the water, Jamie refused to give into fear, rather he became slightly angry at the situation. Did the creature mean to drown him? Did this mean that it was truly carnivorous and ate human flesh? The thought of being eaten didn't really appeal.to his oxygen starved brain... the pressure of the water making his ears hurt.

The creatures nails dug painfully into his arm as he was pulled along, and suddenly they stopped. It was a surreal experience, naked in the cold water in near total darkness, like being surrounded by cold, black ink. He felt the creature move closer to his face and a thought occurred to him as his lungs began to burn... the creature was surely breathing underwater.

With nothing to lose, Jamie turned in the mermans grasp, a hand feeling for its face. Jamie gripped its chin tightly, and as it opened its mouth to reveal sharp teeth, Jamie covered its mouth with his own and took a breath, attempting to suck the air out of the creatures lungs. If it didn't work, then he would surely drown right there and then....

Anapestus' eyes widened as he felt the man take his chin. Just when he was about to bite, he felt another pair of lips on his own... His grip weakened instantly as a dark red stained his cheeks. What in the world was the man doing?!?

The merman quickly let go of the other while staring at him wide-eyed for a few seconds. So what if he wasn't human? You can't just go and kiss someone! Anapestus didn't even feel when his limbs started moving in an attempt of swimming from the crazy human...

Anapestus could still feel the soft lips of his prey on his own as he swam off as far as he could. Humans were way too weird for him to understand anymore... If you're in grave danger and you're about to lose your life - who would just go and kiss the one who was about to kill you?!?

Jamie a had only managed to take a small breath into his burning lungs before the creature broke free, pushing him away and disappearing into the darkness. Free from its grasp, Jamie began to rise to the surface. He kicked his feet to speed his ascent to the surface, his body already consuming the small amount oxygen.

His head broke the surface, gasping as he dragged the sweet, cool air into his burning lungs. He looked about, seeing how far away he was from the shore, unsure about what he should be doing. He was far too excited to be afraid, a legendary marine creature actually existed! He wanted to know more about it, find out what he could, talk to it, ask it questions, take a few samples...

He started to stroke back to the shore, his mind racing with the possibilities, he'd need to go and get his diving gear, make a few notes, set his equipment up...

Anapestus was trying to calm himself down at least a little bit while sitting at the deepest part of his lake. The creature had his eyes closed as his thoughts travelled back to that human... He still couldn't believe that he'd done something like that! And even more - Anapestus let him escape again... The merman let out a sigh which only resulted in small bubbles that slowly began their journey upwards.

The merman nervously swayed his tail from side to side for a few times in an attempt to calm himself down. Second by second, it seemed as if his cheeks were returning into their usual pale color and his hands had stopped shaking. He was getting way too soft for his own good!

Anapestus slowly opened his black eyes while he bit his lip. Maybe this was just a way for his prey to get free? By using such a dirty technique he was bound to succeed...

Jamie reached the part of the shore where his clothes lay on the ground, he didn't bother with all of them, just putting his pants and shoes on and hurrying back to the house. Once inside he threw his clothes into the corner and proceeded to go through his various boxes, looking for his wetsuit and diving gear. He had no idea if the creature would still be there, but he figured that it was now or never, his inebriation forgotten.

Fifteen minutes later he was perched on the edge of the dock, adjusting his mask and breather before sliding back into the inky water...

Anapestus nearly shivered at the sound of the human sliding into the lake. This lake was the one place he always felt safe in, but right now... Right now he was scared of a puny human. Never before in his life he was scared of a human while in this very lake. This was more like his castle, a place that he could call home when needed, a place where he could both defend himself and attack his prey. Now one human was going to change that?..

The merman lightly bit his lower lip while slowly moving upwards. The best decision was to go and meet the enemy... Just who knew if it would actually succeed? Humans were pretty powerful, he didn't eveen know of all the weapons they had...

In a few minutes, the merman was standing still about five metres away from the human. He couldn't even call him his prey anymore... Right now he seemed to be the one hunted.

The lake itself was huge, and Jamie had no idea where to begin his search. If the creature came to him once, then surely it would come to him again. All he had with him was his underwater camera, choosing to leave his knife behind. He had his breather now, so really wasn't in any danger of drowning, unleas the creature was truly malicious and wanted him dead... in which case, what was the knife going to do?

Jamie swam slowly through the depths, the light from the moon barely penetrating through. He was reminded on how sureal the last experience was, and this time was no different, only the sound of his breathing and subsequent bubbles disrupting the silence, the inky darkness leaving him alone with his thoughts... what was he going to do if he found the creature again?

Anapestus quietly followed the man around, his tail's scales reflecting the moon light only slightly. He sneakily dove in deeper so he was underneath the human while narrowing his eyes slightly. He wanted this bastard out... Jamie was making him feel more than uncomfortable - this was supposed to be his home, not his hiding place!

The merman closed his eyes for a few seconds before taking in a deep breath. If he were to take off that device that allowed that human to breath underwater, he may succeed with getting him out of here, but what if that happened again? The black eyes then turned towards the camera Jamie was holding. Seconds after, Anapestus was close enough to grab it out of the human's hands, so he did just that. A slightly frightened look could be seen on the merman's face as he tossed off the camera somewhere far away. Right now he was feeling nothing more like some kind of a lost, cornered and hurt animal.

Jamie was startled as the camera was yanked out of his hands, disappearing into the depths of the lake. The merman flashed into view, the look on its face reminding Jamie of a cornered animal. The intial buzz of discovery was subsiding, reminding him that it was something ridiculous like two in the morning, the remnants of adrenaline making him feel more weary than if he'd spent all day in the water. The camera was sturdy, it would be able to survive a few days under the water and he'd go back and search for it later.

He held his hands up in the universal gesture to show he had nothing in his hands; he was unarmed and he wasnt here to cause trouble. Still not being able to see anything in the gloom, he slowly kicked towards the surface. He was going to be staying by the lake for a few months at least, plenty of time to research the creature... if it didn't disappear entirely...

Anapestus narrowed his eyes while looking at the human. Seeing him raise his arms, the merman unconsciously got further away. For now, Jamie was his enemy... One can never trust his enemy. The black eyes followed the other as he swam up to the surface. Anapestus decided that it was best for him to simply get away for now. No matter how shameful it was, he didn't want to risk getting hurt... Or even killed. Maybe the human wanted to capture him and sell him off? Some already tried doing so, but he always managed to escape. Yet, this one was different, with... strange tactics.

The merman turned around and swam back into the depths of his lake. Of course, the human would be back, but would he even be found? Maybe the best decision was to live on land for some time, just until it was safe to get back. Of course, it was dangerous... If he was to stay human for too long, there was a chance he wouldn't even stay alive. For mermans it was difficult to live on land - if they don't get enough water, they eventually die.

As Jamie hoisted himself out of the water and back onto the dock, he wondered how he was going to find the camera. In his excitement, he had picked up his personal camera rather than the one he used for his research, though at times it felt the two were interchangeable. The difference is that his personal camera had, well, personal pictures on it... He unzipped his wetsuit and peeled it from his upper body, removing his tank and breather and then carried everything back to the house. It was late, or early, depending how you looked at the clock, and he was dead tired. So what if he didn't find anything out straight away, he was sure that he'd find something out soon.

He stripped off in the bathroom, leaving his wetsuit in the tub, and his equipment on the floor. Right now, he just wanted to climb into bed. The sheets were at least clean, and felt good against his skin as he slid between them, he couldn't even be bothered with sleeping shorts he was that tired. He yawned once before closing his eyes, and fell asleep moments later.

Anapestus let out a heavy sigh once he reached the bottom of his lake. He was ready to find a nice place and sleep, but then some weird object appeared in his eyesight. The merman swam closer to it, being as careful as he could. When he got close enough to see what it was, he blinked in confusion and picked it up. It was the camera that he had taken from Jamie, but he was sure that it ended up somewhere further away!

The merman carefully looked at the camera before deciding it was probably best if he just put it somewhere else. With this thought, Anapestus swam over to an underwater cave that he could call something close to his home. In there, he spent a lot of time - especially when healing his wounds. There were also some things that he found interesting piled up. The merman carefully swam into the cave and up, until he reached the surface. Being as careful as he could, Anapestus lifted the camera out of the water and swam closer to the shore, putting the object on the ground there. Next to the camera were mostly useless stuff that people would throw out into the lake. When he had enough time, the creature would try and clean out the lake as much as he could. He absolutely hated living in a poluted lake...

Jamie rolled onto his stomach, bunching up the pillow and burying his face in it. It was morning, and by the height of the sun in the sky, it had been for quite some time. He wasn't usually one to sleep in, but the events of the last 24 hours had seemingly caught up with him and had worn him out more than he realised. He shifted his hips uncomfortably, also realising at that moment that he had a rather serious case of... morning wood. He groaned into the pillow before throwing the sheets off him in a huff. He was going to have to "take care of things" in the shower; at least the hot water would make him feel slightly less seedy, the beginnings of a hangover starting to cause the tell-tale thumping in his head. It was also a good thing that he didn't really have to do anything today and could spend most of it either in bed, or unpacking the rest of his things. There was no way he could seriously conduct any research in the condition he was going to be in.

Coffee first he thought to himself as the hot water of the shower cascaded over his body, his hands moving the soap slowly around his body... and then travelling southwards to take care of a more... pressing need. As he worked his hands smoothly over it, and image flashed in his mind causing him to pause momentarily... why on earth would he be thinking of that creature at a time like this? He shook his head slightly and continued, his body shuddering moments later. Whilst the deed was done, he was still perplexed over the idea that the creature was somehow... attractive....

Jamie quickly finished his shower, tying the towel around his waist as he made his way to the kitchen for his coffee, staring out the window, watching the sunlight shimmer across the surface of the lake as he waited for the jug to boil.

Anapestus wasn't exactly in a good condition. The merman desperately tried to stop the blood that was flowing out of his right arm, just a little lower than his shoulder. During the night, he was out in the woods, hoping to find something to eat for himself. Animals weren't his favorite food, but they would usually do when he was hungry. Just this time... He wasn't the only one who wanted some food. Just as he was about to attack a deer, one wolf almost jumped onto him. Its teeth cut his flesh deep enough he could see the white bone. Anapestus immediately got back into the lake, hoping that in the water he'd be able to heal faster, yet his hopes were fruitless.

The merman slowly began swimming up to the surface without even realizing that Jamie probably saw him. The merman slowly swam to the shore, with his unharmed hand still clenching onto his wound. Throughout the night, he already lost a lot of blood. Thought it wa rather shameful, he needed some help. He had to reach the city and get something to clean the wound with, as well as some bandages. He'd probably have to spend today in the city... If he managed to reach it. Anapestus could feel his strength so little even though he was in water... Who knew what may happen when he got out.

Jamie stirred his coffee slowly before taking a sip absent-mindedly. His thoughts were somewhat preoccupied and the thumping headache that was starting wasn't helping. Must've gotten water in my ears too he thought to himself as he gave his head a slight shake, feeling the pressure shift slightly. I should probably start going through all my supplies today, make sure the first aid kit has everything in it... He turned from the window and padded out of the kitchen with his coffee, the towel around his waist slipping dangerously low.

A few moments later he was sitting in the middle of what constituted as his loungeroom floor with the contents of his first aid case scattered everywhere. He sipped at his coffee slowly as he checked through bandages, medications and the like. His first-aid kit was a step above those normally sold. His bandages were of a more heavy duty nature, and he packed painkillers and the like that you would normally find in hospitals rather than pharmacies. If he was out on the water for days at a time and got himself into trouble, then he needed to have things that would last the distance until he was able to get help... it even contained a needle and suture threads; he'd had to stitch himself up a few times.

Anapestus let out a pained groan as he slowly moved to the shore. His vision got blurry as the scales started falling from his tail. The merman fell backwards on the grass while feeling completely out of strength to even move a muscle. His black eyes slowly closed as he just hoped that he wouldn't pass out. He knew that if he did, when someone found him, there'd be a lot of questions... If someone found him, that was.

The tall male was soon unconscious, laying on the ground next to the lake. Blood was still dripping down on the ground for his arm, as well as a few drops of blood on his legs from the fallen off scales. The merman seemed pale from the blood loss. If he didn't get his wound fixed up any time soon, the posibility of him dying would increase... Nearly to a hundred percent.
