Summary: Watching from afar, Victor's object of affection and his friend Sam, sunderstand him. After thinking he has gotten rid of them, Victor and Cecil meet again. What will happen?

Status: Discontinued

This is a story that's probably going to be really slow getting to the romance.

However, if that's your thing, I hope you enjoy this.

This takes place in a kingdom surrounded by trees named Triad. This first chapter can probably stand alone, and it was written a long time before the second one.

---------------------------------------------------------

His eyes darted through the crowd, searching for a glimpse of the light, straw colored hair of that girl. He looked around for a while before finding her, and the boy next to her. The couple was always together Watching them had become sort of a habit of his, one that he didn't particularly enjoy, but he didn't know why he couldn't help looking for those two: that boy that Sam and his friends liked to push around, and the girl that Sam had an infatuation with. Sam had barely even mentioned liking her that much and sometimes he wondered if Sam just bullied her beau because he saw her as an object that had been taken away

He wouldn't have cared less if it hadn't been for the fact that he always seemed to be looking for them. He always managed to find those two. Cecil was his name. Willow was hers. They had recently become a couple, despite Sam's constant declarations that Willow was his. He tried to be careful in staring because at first, he believed that it was her that attracted his eyes, but he soon realized it wasn't the case. He knew who it was that he was jealous of, but wouldn't admit it. No, admitting it would be too embarrassing. He preferred to just be Sam's shadow.

Eventually, though, no matter how careful he tried to be, his silent gazing drew Cecil's attention. Cecil would turn to his direction with curious eyes. Then, those lips would turn up in a smirk which made him frown and avert his eyes. It seemed as if every time Cecil looked at him, he would smirk confidently, as if he had caught him in an embarrassing situation and was looking down at him.

How he hated that smirk. Yet he couldn't stop looking for those two, trying to be as careful as possible, but just as Cecil had noticed, others started to too.

"Hey, he's doing it again. Sam's shadow's looking at her again," people would whisper, referring to him as Sam's shadow because that was just what he was. He didn't have many redeeming physical features, except for his height, but what someone lacked in looks, they could always make up for with personality. Unfortunately, he didn't have much of a personality. He was introverted and quiet, speaking only when he really had to. He answered most questions with small gestures and he had a habit of leaving in the middle of a conversation, convincing most people that he hated them. The truth was that he found conversations difficult to hold up

He never liked to waste time, but found himself wishing that he would just grow up already to the age where he could stop attending school and help out his family. He noticed that Sam had been glaring at him lately, so it wasn't much of a surprise when while he was looking at them again, Sam grabbed his shoulder and asked him with an almost murderous tone, "Why are you looking at her?"

He couldn't admit that he was actually looking at the boy next to her, so he let the punches happen. His eyes strayed once Sam had beaten him into the ground, looking for something to get his mind off the pain. He wasn't sure what he was looking for because his head wasn't clear. He could barely concentrate on anything but the other boy's punches. Every blow interrupted his thoughts and he coughed and tried to hide from the pain. A crowd was forming around them and some people were attempting to pull Sam away from him. Others stared in pity.

He found what he had been looking for. It was Cecil, who was standing somewhere amongst the crowd with Willow at his side. The boy's expression was one of curiosity, not shock when their eyes met. Cecil didn't frown in pity. Instead, the compassion that he had been looking for in the other's face was absent. Cecil simply smirked, looking down at him from his higher ground, and soon, he walked away with Willow chasing after him.

He gradually stopped staring at those two after that incident. It seemed pointless after all and he didn't want to waste his time. He nursed a secret grudge, but managed to convince himself that Cecil's existence was just like any other person's. It had no effect on him and it wouldn't make a difference if Cecil had never existed at all.

The only time he had acknowledged Cecil again before leaving school was after he had witnessed Cecil's break up with Willow. After Willow had slapped Cecil and run away, crying, Cecil looked up at him with a confused face. All he did was turn away without any change of emotion. Victor had started socializing more often, and people said that he had changed from being Sam's shadow. His life had improved much more and he had even set a goal for himself. He wanted to become one of the king's knights. After all, the castle was far away from his childhood home.

He managed to achieve the goal too, after getting out of school, and he had even become well-liked in the castle. He expected to never ever see Cecil again and he was grateful for it. After all, he had been nothing but a nuisance and a burden, but sometimes he wondered what might have happened if he had spoken of his true feelings for Cecil. Perhaps they might've had a real relationship, but maybe nothing would've changed at all and Cecil would've just smirked and walked away without a word.

How he had hated that smirk so much, but he had wanted the person behind it. He swore not to ever make that mistake ever again. The constant staring, the beating from Sam and the misunderstandings from holding it all in. It had been all for nothing.
