The Cult of Helios was a bunch of assholes. They had started out as a harmless sect with five people studying life and death, until the studies had eaten them up. In October 2019, on Halloween, they were exactly fifty people and they were responsible for 200 deaths. Children, men, women, pregnant women, babies, pets. They hadn‘t cared, they had solely taken drugs and drunken alochol and stabbed everyone and everything that had crossed their paths. Among those victims were Kiba‘s family; his father, his stepmother, his little sister and his dog. All of them - dead. Kiba had come home from a Halloween party that night and he had found the corpses. It had left a trauma that was unspeakable and hard to fathom. He had felt cold, broken, dead and alive all at the same. Many, many funerals had been held in that dark time, and inside of the church, Kiba had met him: his future partner in crime. Together they had studied, followed, stalked, hunted and eventually killed members of the sect until everyone was gone. Kiba, heartbroken, traumatized and full of sorrow, had had one single gun and enough bullets for twice as many people. And after many weeks, it was done, the cult was as good as extinct. The team hadn‘t even bothered hiding, they had cracked two beers open in Kiba‘s garage and waited for the police to come and get them. To be honest, Kiba knew that something was wrong with his partner, he was not only a person who had been hurt by the cult but also someone who did really deserve to be taken out of society. Kiba had seen him killing. He had enjoyed it.

In court, the judge had certified them insane and they were sent to a mental hospital that was far away in the next city. The St. Valentino Asylum. The name sounded cute, but Kiba knew that a mental hospital was nothing to be happy about, at least in his eyes. They still were lucky enough to get sent to the same asylum, so when it was time to pack his things, Kiba could go home for one last time to get his passport and other personal IDs for the asylum, but otherwise he couldn‘t keep anything. He and his partner were sent to the asylum the next day. The drive there was long, terribly long, but once they had arrived, they were pushed through security scans and had to exchange their clothes for patient clothes, which were plain grey overalls with white short-sleeved tops underneath. The Helios Cult had been a huge annoyance for the public, so for getting rid of those criminals Kiba and his partner at least met some sympathy in the asylum. For example, they were granted to have rooms right next to each other. After a talk with countless psychologists and a psychiatrist, Kiba was diagnosed with PTSD and some other mental disorders that he didn‘t even care to remember. What for?

The team had arrived in the morning, so it was pretty quiet. The rooms were plain but sweet. A bed, a bedside table, a desk, a stool, a toilet and a wardrobe. There was a fitness room and a library available during their free time as well, but only between one PM and seven PM. Right now it was only eight AM and the nurse who had brought them to their rooms took off their handcuffs and then left them to be. There were many other people in the same ward, but nobody was of great interest to Kiba. Honestly, he didn‘t really think that he fit into this asylum anyway, he wasn‘t crazy. Okay, maybe a bit, but what did it matter? He had chosen this life when he had aimed his gun against the cult members.

Kiba left his room and entered the room his partner was in. He quickly took a look around. „Looks the same as all the others,“ he commented. He didn‘t think the other cared though. Kiba walked over to the bed and sat on it. „Since we are locked up in here for a life time… Do you have hobbies?“ It was a bit awkward now. It felt like they were still strangers, but without a purpose now.

"Do you have hobbies?"

What a perplexing question. One that Kain did not know he could answer. Not even as a child had he considered himself to have interests, unless you counted torturing innocent animals a hobby. And his family had never even owned pets until his baby sister came along. The baby sister he never asked for.

But like most little girls, his younger sister had wanted nothing more than to own a kitten. And his parents being unable to say no to their precious little daughter gave her a snow white little bundle.

She loved that thing. And Kain could never understand loving anything. Not even himself.

One day he asked his sister to see the kitten, and of course she agreed. The only other thing she wanted more than a kitten was her big brother's attention and approval. So the prized bundle was readily handed over to Kain, only to have her expression become more worried as her brother did not pet or play with the kitten. Instead he had carried the kitten into the bathroom where the tub full of water had already been filled prior.

"Hey, June. I'm going to teach him how to swim."

She nodded reluctantly, relief washing over her face for a minute. Her big brother was going to teach the kitten so he would never drown outside. Surely that was it?

Only it soon became evident this was not a proper swimming lesson. When Kain taught the kitten by holding it's head underneath the water.

The young girl screamed at him to stop, but Kain wasn't listening. She ran to go tell their parents, but they wouldn't interfere. For they already knew something that June was being taught the hard way. You don't cross Kain.

Kain meanwhile was still crouched over the tub, his wrists covered in bleeding lines and red drops mixing into the clear water as the poor little animals fought bravely for it's life. But it was a battle never to be won, and soon the kitten died and the game was not fun anymore.

The killing itself never gave Kain any satisfaction, it was the sensation of claws digging into his flesh as the creature struggled against him. That was the first time he truly felt anything, and the feeling was twisted and sickening.

That incident had been a long time ago, when he was a little boy. But Karma hadn't forgotten about his sins against a defenseless animal, and karma hit back with a vengeance tenfold.

Kain couldn't even remember how that day had started, but he had been home with his family when things went horribly wrong. It had been nighttime, and the family was sitting around in the living room when men had come in wearing masks and slaughtered his family.

Kain should have been afraid in that moment, but instead he had watched with that same sick feeling from so many years ago with the kitten. It had awaken in him again. He didn't care that his family was being killed. So much in fact he scarcely even realized he was next.

Kain had lay in the middle of the living room surrounded by his family corpses for hours before he was found by law enforcement and paramedics.

"Oh, my god.... Holy Hell... He's still alive...!"

Kain was stabbed over twenty times. That should have killed him. But perhaps even karma was scared of him too.

The fact that he had survived this, hadn't left him broken and scared like it should have with a normal boy who had his entire family murdered in front of him and being a victim. Instead it left Kain even more dangerous and twisted than before. He believed he was indestructible. He was like a God, able to take the life of others, but untouchable to them.

Yet, due to the sad circumstances no one ever once suspected that Kain could be a threat. Instead he was babied and coddled, treated like a poor boy who had lost everything and been through a horrible trauma. And Kain allowed the facade to play out since while everyone thought he was broken apart, he was secretly meeting with a new ally who also had been preyed upon by the cult. And together they grew like a disease, poisoning each other's minds with motives to seek revenge.

In many ways they were different, but in the end their goal was the same. And nothing could stop them. They had nothing to loose and everything to gain out of this.

"Do you have hobbies?"

"... I had a pet cat growing up. That's it."

Kain smiled, the gesture coming naturally, but with no warmth associated.
