Daniel stretched his legs out a little having been cooped up all night like always he was glad to get back out and in the open of the forest on the property. Even if there was a fence surrounding the property at least here he was safe. That thought continuously ran through his head, he had been through enough as it was, and had practically grown up in the hands of humans. His mother having been taken when he was little and being the child that he was it wasn't hard to lure him to follow even though his mother insisted he stay behind. Daniel had been scared and didn't want to be left behind, his father and the rest of the tribe had took off just as they had but he had lost them in all of the confusion.

Shivering slightly despite the warm weather he shook his head, trying his best to not give it much thought. That was a dark day, and what followed had been miserable for him and his mother. She had unfortunately died a few years after they had been captured, and he was left an orphan with no one to protect him. Things after that hadn't gotten easier but he had managed, Daniel never would have thought that something like this would happen to him. Even though it wasn't being returned to his father and the others it was as good as he was going to get and much better than what he had dealt with until that point. The people here were kind to him, and though being brought into one of the barns at night to keep them safe wasn't ideal it was better than nothing.

Happily he ran through the trees jumping over fallen logs and looking around. There were a bunch of other centaurs here as well but Daniel tended to stick to himself. As he was darting through the trees he eventually made it towards the edge of the trees where it gave way to a large pasture like space. It was empty for the most part, a small group of centaurs out in the distance but it didn't stop him from darting out of the trees and towards the fence. Some of the workers he had gotten close to and he wanted to see them not to mention they made him incredibly happy. Anyone being nice to him made him incredibly happy.

*~*~*~*

Xander was making his way through the barn making sure that all of the centaurs had been turned loose onto the sanctuary's large fenced off property. There were certain doors the centaurs were encouraged to use that kept them safe within the fenced off property, while there were other entrances that they could take and move around the rest of the property where the centaurs weren't allowed access. Most of it was for the creatures though, and he had to admit he enjoyed seeing them happy and living their lives almost exactly how they were supposed to do so. It was a shame that they couldn't set them free, but most of their charges had been captured so long ago that it was deemed that they were 'domesticated' and wouldn't survive in the wild anymore.

Shame. At least that was what he thought, but Olympus provided them a second chance, a chance to be as free as they possible could be and get the treatment they desperately needed. Many of the centaurs that arrived weren't in good health upon arrival, but they were quick to help them get back on their feet. Giving them anything they could possibly need ranging just from some emotional support by spending time with them to medical treatment and life saving operations from professionals they had managed to hire. The centaur anatomy was definitely an intriguing one for sure, and it meant that not many people were qualified to tend to them but they had been lucky enough to get one of these people on their team. Xander took it upon himself to learn all he could from the other, wanting to offer his friend and owner all that he could in ways of support. Knowing that running such a business was not an easy one to do.

Alexander was in his office pouring over paperwork before he would attend to the affairs of the sanctuary outside. He sighed in frustration pouring over the financial paperwork for the sanctuary..they were barely making ends meet. Any money he made he put right back into the sanctuary..but he did not care. He was doing this for the well being and the safety of the centaurs. He would do anything he needed to for their care! He hired qualified workers and those willing to learn among the staff at the sanctuary to ensure their well being.

It seemed they would be recieving another centaur today who called himself 'Alfred'. He was saved from a farm in the countryside, needing to talk to Xander about preparing a space for the new arrival today. He left his office to go out to the fields of the sanctuary, finding Xander having released the centaurs for the day. "Xander..!" He smiled, tying back his long white hair. "Good morning" He greeted him with a big smile. "We have another new arrival coming in today, I need help in preparing a space for him. He is a work horse so we need to be careful in case he gets feisty" Alexander smiled, seeing the truck pull up. "I am sure we will have plenty of time preparing a space for him so he could roam while we wait' He smiled, going to the truck to introduce himself.

--------

Alfred had started off his day like he had many days before, working the fields of the farm. He had been plowing the fields when the men came to get him, saying that he was free. Free..? Alfred felt confused, barely having memories of like outside this farm. He had been here since he was a colt, he did not know much of life outside of working on the farm. He was hesitant in leaving the farm, even if they were his captors. They had a bit of trouble, Alfred fighting back a bit but they managed to convince him they meant him no harm, starting up the truck to head to Olympus.

He was not sure what this 'Olympus' place was, closed off from the world when he was staying at the farm. Alfred eventually could see trees through the slots of the truck, seeing the sign for this sanctuary the workers in front of this vast meadow. The tree line was thick and there were some stalls on the outskirts of the facility towards the front. The truck backed up to the gate and opened its doors, stepping out, eyes blinking in the bright sun. So green here..He thought as he took hesitant steps out.

Xander heard his name being called and turned to see Alexander coming up tying his hair back as he was doing so. "Another? I'm sure we have some space over here." Xander said as he motioned to the nearby building that they were standing outside of when he noticed the truck pulling up. "As long as he's in good condition there isn't any reason not to release him right out with the others. Gives him a chance to get acquainted with some of the others." He commented. Building a relationship with the other centaurs in the sanctuary was vital, and he hoped that the new addition would fit in and find somewhere to belong. It wasn't like they were unaware that the centaurs released here made their own groups and stuck closely to them, but they all seemed to be tolerant of the presence of the others. The land seeming to have more than enough space to comfortable house them all, and with the employees of the sanctuary making sure they all had plenty of food and water access there was nothing for them to fight over.

Xander followed Alexander over to the truck and indicated they should back right up to the gate so they could just let him out immediately with the others. Waiting until they were in position before he moved to open the gate, it wasn't very often the gate was opened since most of the time the centaurs left and entered the area from the different housing barns on the property. He waited in anticipation for the new addition to make his way out, and he wasn't surprised by the hesitance, positive that this was a scary thing to be happening after who knew how many years of servitude to his owners. "Seems like he's already gained some interest." Xander mused as he glanced towards Alexander nodding his head towards Daniel. He was one of the smaller types of centaur they housed here, and the male was incredibly curious of changes.

*~*~*~*

Daniel felt his interest peak when he saw a truck at the gat and noticed that they seemed to be letting out a new centaur. 'Oh! Someone new!' Daniel excitedly thought to himself as he hesitantly moved closer to the area though he remained close within easy darting distance of the trees just encase the new centaur didn't like him or want him around. Coming to a stop he had one leg slightly raised as though he was going to take another step forward when he saw the new centaur making his way out of the trailer and into the large area. He wasn't the only one that was curious though, Daniel could see that the group he had noticed earlier off in the distance all seemed to be looking this way too. As though assessing the situation from a distance, he was one of the more human friendly centaurs in the sanctuary. Most seemed to just be tolerant of their presence because they knew the ones here were not going to hurt them.

Eyeing the other's hesitant steps made him take a few more forward, wanting to get closer but feeling caution at the same time. More than aware that some of the centaurs brought here were actually quite mean. At least... they had been mean to him and he hadn't liked them for that in return. His blue eyes darted towards the two humans, Xander and Alexander, two people he had come to like. He eyed them for a moment as though asking if this one was a nice one, but since he was being let out straight from the truck there was a good chance that neither of them knew the answer to that.

"Ah yes, a perfect introduction to Olympus. Daniel is quite a friendly one" Alexander smiled, figuring he would be perfect one to introduce to other centaurs. "Daniel~!" Alexander waved to him with a smile. Daniel seemed to be approaching on his own, looking at Alfred with a hesitant gaze. It had been a bit since they got a newer centaur, still working on some other cases to liberate centaurs. Some they were able to treat and release but most brought here had to stay here..But his goal was to release as many as possible back into the wild. He was determined to save the population or at least stabilize it. His mission was to help the centaurs, provide them with the love and care that they deserved if they could not return to the wild.

"Alfred, this is Daniel. He is one of the centaurs here at Olympus. Daniel, this is Alfred, he was a work horse from a farm in the country. Please treat him kindly and show him around?" Alexander said respectfully with a warm smile. Surely Daniel could be a good introduction to the sanctuary being one of the more curious one of the centaurs. "Don't worry Daniel, we will be right here" Alexander reassured the smaller centaur, making sure things would not go wrong with his first few moments here. Alfred looked much larger in comparison, being built to be a working horse so Alexander hoped things would go well

-----

Alfred was eyeing the surroundings before he saw a smaller centaur coming toward him. It seemed rather small in size but he still approached cautiously. He stepped fully out of the truck, his tail swishing behind him. Alfreds eyes glanced over the figure, taking a few hesitant steps forward. Alfred rarely got to see other centaurs on the farm, seeing some in passing whenever he had to take a cart to market. But now he was surrounded by them...and usually they were working centaurs. Not...forest ones...

Alfred took a few more hesitant steps forward until he was face to face with the centaur called Daniel. He leaned his head down a bit, taking a few hesitant sniffs at his hair. Alfred walked around him, taking in the new scents of the centaur. He observed the antlers, reaching out and touching them hesitantly. He took a few steps back in surprise before stepping forward again. Hmm...Seems okay enough...Alfred thought of the smaller centaur.

Daniel's ears perked up when he heard Alexander wave to him, clearly it was the other's way of telling him he could come closer and that things were okay. He was hesitant but did move closer easier now, feeling safe with Alexander's presence and encouragement. Not that he wasn't more than capable of fleeing if needed, but he never really liked running away even if it was an ingrained instinct. The introductions were made and he was told that this new centaur was named Alfred, which made him even more curious especially when he noticed how muscular this centaur was. It wasn't completely uncommon in other species of centaur, but when it came to him he was definitely not muscular built for speed not strength. This made it so he admired the strength of the others even more, finding himself completely weak in comparison.

Alexander reassuring him that they would be right there made him nod and he came a little closer. When he stopped it was because Alfred was coming closer to him and he tried to remain still as the other was sniffing him taking in his scent. Though he was quick to do the same admiring the scent of the other his head tilting to the side slightly. The centaur walking around him made him nervously shift his eyes never once leaving him since he suddenly felt like a piece of meat. "Hey!" He complained when the other reached out and touched his horns before he was backing up a little in surprise. Such surprise did not last long since Alfred was soon stepping towards him again and seemed to be okay with his presence.

This made his face brighten up and he excitedly started his own inspection of the other looking him over and poking his flank gently when he noticed just how muscular he was. "Wow..." He breathed not used to it. This centaur was taller than him too, making him feel more like a child even though he was an adult. At this point he turned his gaze to Alexander and pouted, "Why is everyone else so much bigger than me?" It was a complaint that he made frequently, but it sucked. He seemed to be the smallest one here, not having met any others of his kind when there was definitely a diverse group of centaur present. Shaking that off though he remembered that Alexander had mentioned showing the new centaur around and he definitely wouldn't mind doing that. "I'll show him around. I can be a great guide!" He happily said quite eager to do so.

*~*~*~*

Xander watched the interaction between the two of the centaurs having closed the gate again after Alfred had exited the truck. Leaning against the fence he let out a soft laugh at the smaller centaur's complaint about the other's being bigger than him amusement sparking as he glanced towards Alexander. "I think someone's a little jealous." He mused this not being the first time Daniel had asked them this. They stayed with the pair for awhile to make sure the two would get along and that there wouldn't be any issues before he suggested to Alexander that they get going to make sure they could get a place ready for Alfred come nightfall that he could come in and relax in.

As they were leaving the pair and he saw Daniel happily start to lead Alfred along to show him around he turned towards Alexander. "What building do you want to house Alfred in?" There were numerous buildings they had around the property that house the different centaurs. As time passed he learned who got along with who and made changes in sleeping arrangements to keep the formed groups together and thus happier.

Alfred watched as it seemed it was Daniels turn to inspect him over. Daniel seemed to fascinated by his flank, poking and prodding at it. His tail swished around and he stomped at bit at the unfamiliar prodding but let him continue and didn’t step back. His comment he made moments after seemed to suggest he was the smallest of the centaurs at this sanctuary, or at least he was one of the bigger ones. Regardless, Daniel seemed to be jealous of his size over him. It didn’t seem like Daniel would cause him any immediate harm or trouble, relaxing a bit.

He heard the human who seemed to be in charge of this place ask Daniel to show him around the sanctuary. The human was so kind to Daniel, asking him what he wanted or at least it not being a command. His tail flicked about and figured he should get used to this place, willing to go along with it for now. He was ready to bolt at the first sign of trouble, not sure he could easily trust anyone here just because some humans said so. At least from the look of things, things were okay but he couldn’t be sure. He waited around before the humans seemed satisfied and left them to their own devices. “Hi..” Alfred said quietly, figuring he might as well try to converse with his tour guide.

*~*~*~*

Alexander chuckled at Daniels comment, not surprised Daniel commented on Alfreds size. “He is built to be a working centaur and has worked on a farm. He is going to be bigger than you regardless” He chuckled before giving Daniel some reassurance. “You are perfect for your size, don’t fret” Alexander smiled warmly, not wanting Daniel to think he was insulting him. He was satisfied the two would get along without their supervision, walking away and leaving them be for now.

“That went smoothly” Alexander signed in relief. “Alfred seemed well built and gave the workers a hard time when taking him from the farm” He said as he soon heard Xander suggest about his housing. Alexander had to ponder a moment, carefully going over empty spaces in his head. “I don’t want to room him with anyone this soon on his first day. That wouldn’t be a wise decision as he does not seem to be used to company or other centaurs..well that is usually the case. He should get familiar with everyone before we consider living arrangements with another. I suppose he can room with Daniel if things work well between them later on. Daniels room has adequate space to fit them both comfortably since Daniel is smaller. If not, we can Room him in the room across from him should things sour” Alexander expressed his thoughts, looking to Xander for his opinion. “Ah, we should also give Alfred an entrance medical exam, make sure everything is healthy and stable” He nodded as he kept walking with Xander toward the buildings where they housed the centaurs at night

The swishing of Alfred's tail and his stomping made Daniel dart away for a moment. When it seemed he had relaxed though and was more at ease he was quick to come back and continue inspecting the larger centaur. "I like him!" He suddenly decided his eyes moved over to Alexander and Xander who had remained nearby to make sure they were going to get along. Alexander told him that Alfred would be bigger than him regardless because of what he had been built for and doing. "Sounds hard." Daniel admitted with a frown on his face. Such labor did sound hard and difficult, making him glad that he was too little to be able to be used for such things. Hearing that he was perfect for his size definitely made him perk up though and it clearly showed as even his face had lit up happily.

Waving bye as the two left them he turned his back to Alfred who finally spoke only making his smile become even brighter something that he hadn't thought possible. "Hello!" He replied happily before he was quick to suggest that he began to show him around. Deciding to show him the more open part of the area they were kept in before he would show him the forest that was included and some of the other places. "It's really nice here! Tons of space to run around in as you wish, no one telling you what to do!" Daniel happily said as he walked along with Alfred. As they walked he got curious and gave the other a curious look, "Did you... like working on a farm?"

*~*~*~*

"Quite. I think it's about time we found a friend for him." Xander said with a small smile of amusement on his face. "He was probably scared. This is a big change, and any centaur being told they are free after living so long like he had, like most of them had is sure to be met with resistance." He admitted with a soft sigh feeling a bit bad for the centaur. They were all highly intelligent, and the treatment many of them suffered was beyond cruel. It seemed that Alfred had been well cared for, but a life serving his human owners wasn't one the centaurs should be living. "He'll settle in here just fine, all of them do. We won't be able to release him though, he's lived with people for too long." He added as he was looking over the papers they had been given on him, he kept good detailed files on all the centaurs at the sanctuary.

Discussing where they would house the centaur made him think about it himself as he was told that for now he didn't think it wise to room him with another since it was his first day. "Well, we can put him in the room across from Daniel for now, and after he settles in and they get closer we can move them in together." He suggested feeling this would be a good path for them to take. Daniel was a smaller centaur, the smallest at the sanctuary and the room the other stayed in at night would definitely house them both comfortably if they were to get along. "I can set that up for tonight when everyone is brought in. By that time he should be more used to everything and it will make the exam less stressful."

Alfreds eyebrow raised at Daniels sudden declaration of liking him just from looking at him. Was he really that approachable and likable just at a glance to the centaur? Whoever this centaur was, it seems he could test enough the two humans talking to them. And the centaur seemed nice enough in himself, very inquisitive and friendly if the humans asked him to show him around. He also sympathized with his plight, or at least was curious about it. No matter..Alfred thought as Daniel took him off into the fields of this sanctuary.

Daniel was quite the energetic one..Alfred thought as he followed him toward the forest. He followed him in a slow walk as he looked around the forest and some other parts of the sanctuary. It was a bit more open feeling than the farm was, usually hitched to a plow or cart whenever he was on the farm. Alfred looked to his side, hearing Daniel ask if he liked working on the farm. “I don’t remember life before the farm..I have been there since I was a colt” Alfred said as he turned himself to face the other. “So what about you..? How long have you been at this place? What did you do before..everything?” He did seem a bit curious.

*~*~*~*

“It is about time..Daniel could really use a close friend. I do hope it works out..” Alexander said with a small chuckle. “I am sure he will settle fine..But I do hope he could get used to the sanctuary life. It didn’t seem he was in pure isolation, seeing a few centaurs here and there when he would go to market. It might have been harder if he hadn’t or if he was a centaur from the city. But you are right, he does seem well cared for..” Alexander remarked about Alfreds condition. “And you are right, he will be a permanent stay of the sanctuary, as strong of a working one as he is. He wouldn’t be safe for release back into the Wild” Alexander pondered over the paperwork.

“That is true, they seem to be getting along well enough. Hopefully it will keep going well and they should make perfect bunk mates. “Thank you Xander, it is early enough that we should have plenty of time to set up his room. And you are right, if we tried to do the exam now, he might not take too kindly to it” Alexander did agree, not wanting to perform it too soon. “He seems relatively healthy but we should try to perform the exam as quickly and with as few people as possible. He might be intimidated” Alexander made his way back into the office, needing to add Alfred to his paperwork of the centaurs here.

Being told that Alfred didn't remember life before the farm made him nod, he didn't give it much thought that the other had been there his whole life. "Oh... alone?" He asked the follow up question wondering if that meant he had always been on the farm alone or if there had been another centaur at the time and he had just ended up as the only one. When the question was turned to him he thought about things for a moment remaining quiet before he sighed. "When I was little humans came after my tribe? I guess is the right term... I don't know. Anyway in all the commotion my mom and I were separated from the others, there were a lot of loud noises... shouting... dogs barking..." He paused getting lost in his thoughts for a moment. Seemingly coming back out of his thoughts he turned his gaze up to Alfred, "My mom and I were taken by them, used to help their dogs improve their tracking skills... hunting skills. My mom died a year or so after we were captured, which just left me. I was a chew toy basically, released only to be hunted down again and again. Sometimes just tied to a tree in the middle of the woods waiting terrified for the dogs to find me which never really took them all that long. They'd chew on my leg or arm and all I could do was let them."

After that he became silent again thinking about that time. "A few years ago I was rescued by Alexander and his team. They brought me here, where they treated my injuries and helped me get better. I know that I can't be released like some of the others... but at least it's nice here and Alexander and Xander as well as the others are really nice." Daniel finished the story with a small shrug easily moving through the trees. His mood had fallen severely when he was telling Alfred about his history before getting here, though he quickly perked up again as they continued going. "One of the groups the others have made hang out just over there." He said pointing to their right. "There are a bunch of little groups around that you can always integrate yourself into if you want."

*~*~*~*

"I know he could, but he is the smallest and the only one we've encountered so far. It seems that people focus mainly on the larger centaurs. That or they just haven't survived long enough for us to find them yet." Xander commented trying to think more about it. Centaurs like Alfred were quite common, the stronger build necessary for more menial tasks that would otherwise be difficult without a large group of people. Centaurs like Daniel weren't of any use for that, they weren't strong enough to pull carts, couldn't carry heavy materials, clearly there was still a purpose for them or they never would have found Daniel but it was still a sad case all the same.

"It all depends on how Alfred goes about things, but I don't see him joining one of the groups either. He was after all the only centaur on the farm and only came in contact with others when he went to market as you said. This doesn't set him up for success in an actual group, which leaves Daniel. The two together would do really well though." Xander had a good feeling about the two centaurs making it together, they would be a good duo and he had high hopes for them. They may have their setbacks like everyone would, but he was still feeling good about it. "So... the two of us and the main doctor then?" He asked when Alexander said that they should not have that many people around when it came to Alfred's medical examination tonight so that they weren't seen as intimidating and a threat.

“Not always…When I was a young colt the farm did have another centaur on the property named Eros. He was a bit of an older gentleman but not that old. When I got old enough to work and pull the plows for maybe about a week or two after, the farm was hitting a bit of a rough patch. Eros got sold off to someone else and that left me alone. My life prior to the farm is a blur. I only remember a lot of people…being looked over for ‘potential’. I have vague memories of an open meadow but it was so long ago it is unclear to me” Alfred answered, waiting for the other to tell his story. He started to hear how his mother and him were used for bait and he felt this instinctual protectiveness over the smaller male. He hated how the humans used him as simply a chew toy for their pets. He would not let humans or anyone hurt Daniel like that again.

Alfred heard Daniel talk about what he assumed was the human at the gate, the white haired one who seemed like he oversaw the place. It seemed like Daniel might be a good judge of character if he had to be careful of others because of his size. Alfred turned his head to where Daniel pointed, seeing a small cluster of centaurs off in the distance who seemed focused on their own doings but occasionally looked their way. “I’m…not sure I will do well in those groups. I’m just going to stick with you for now” Alfred said as he stayed at Daniels side. He was sure he would get the chance to talk with them all later but now he wanted to stay at Daniels side.

*~*~*~*

“You aren’t wrong about Daniel, he is definitely the smallest centaur we have encountered so far” Alexander nodded as he got a folder to add the paperwork for Alfred to add among the permanent residents of the sanctuary. “I am glad we found him when we did, he was not in the best shape coming in. Thankfully the injuries weren’t incredibly dire and he made a full recovery” Alexander smiled warmly as he took the paperwork from Xander to put in the file cabinet of permanent residents. He had records of every centaur that passed through here, permanent or otherwise just in case.

“You are right…Alfred does not seem like the type to immediately join a group. He will end up most likely as Daniels roommate or in a room of his own. Although I have a feeling we can get them to room together and they can be their own small little group. And yes, the two of us and the main doctor. Keep others on standby just in case he is resistant to examination. I would rather avoid restraining or any more people so as always we need to be careful. Work centaurs, especially Alfred, are big in size” Alexander agreed as he looked over his file again. He seemed in relatively good health so it should be quick.

Being told that at one time the farm had another centaur who was an older gentleman made Daniel curious about what had happened to him after he was sold. It made sense that the farm would keep Alfred, a younger centaur who would be around much longer and could still get the job done. The vague memories that Alfred had of a meadow were probably the only memories he had of being wild, and had been so long ago that he couldn't recall any other aspects. Maybe... as he stayed at the sanctuary and gained that freedom again he'd slowly start to remember. "Maybe living here you'll be able to remember more." Daniel commented not wanting to pry but hoping that Alfred could get some memory back as to what life was like when he had been a young colt before he was taken in by humans and looked over for potential.

Having glanced towards the group as well he heard Alfred say he wasn't sure he'd do well in one of the groups, indicating he'd he would just stay with him for now. This made him perk up again and his normal energetic self reappeared as he became quite happy about the idea of someone wanting to stay with him. "Really? No one ever wants to stick with me." He admitted a slight blush appearing. Alfred wasn't the first centaur he had shown around, but they all were quick in finding a group that suited them and leaving him behind once more. Which was... fine. But he was glad that someone finally wanted to stick with him instead of going for one of the groups. Not fitting in with any of the groups himself he was never accepted into any of them, it had not been for the lack of trying either. Being the smallest and not like the others just didn't play in his favor, and most felt that he was a burden for being smaller even if there didn't seem to be any threats here.

*~*~*~*

"Who knows how much longer he would have survived like that. Even if his wounds weren't dire that takes a toll on someone's body." Xander said as he thought back to that. To think anyone would use any living creature like that much less one that rivaled their own intelligence was beyond him. It was definitely cruel, and they had saved many more centaurs from cruel owners and horrid conditions since then. "He's still really trusting and friendly despite everything he has been through though." He added not understanding it. Positive that had someone treated him in such a manner he would not be able to trust anyone ever again and would be quite honestly terrified of them or aggressive. It wasn't like centaurs were completely defenseless, they just couldn't stand up to the power behind those determined to wipe them out or enslave them.

"I'm sure we'll know what Alfred plans to do by the time they come in tonight. He will have had plenty of time to decide if he wants to stick with Daniel or run off and find a group among the others." Xander commented taking the file when Alexander handed it to him. "I'll have some men on standby then" He added with a nod. His mind moved from the centaurs thought to Alexander and he gave his friend a small smile, "Alexander... we've been friends for a really long time and I know when something is getting to you. What's wrong?" He asked figuring it probably had something to do with the sanctuary and he wanted to back Xander up the best he could. Help him in any way possible, it was one of the reasons why he had agreed to come work at the sanctuary in the first place. Though he had to admit when Alexander had first told him his vision for a centaur sanctuary he had thought the man was absurd, thinking there was no way it would go well but it did. Though it wasn't always easy to obtain the centaurs to give them better lives it was a battle they had taken on and would continue for as long as they were able to do so.

“I suppose so…” Alfred said quietly, wondering if that would be true. “I think the meadows were near a mountain range…I feel like I recall seeing these big shapes…but…I don’t know” Alfred said quietly, wondering what life was like being free. Here might be his only chance of freedom…At least it felt freer than the farm did. There were open fields and a forest here, granted there were fences at the edges of the property. He could try and get used to things here…but what was his purpose if he was not working constantly? Alfred only knew a life of farm work so what would he even do here?

“Why not? Is it because of your size? Your pattern?” Alfred said, not sure why other centaurs would not like him. He had to guess that it was his size from the comment Daniel made earlier. Sure, he had only talked to Daniel but he felt like his friendly nature and smaller stature might be better suited for him. Alfred has this protective instinct he thought about again that he was not sure what it was. He just felt like he wanted to be with him and did want to get to know what he liked to think was his first real friend.

*~*~*~*

“I am surprised myself he is as trusting and friendly as he is” Alexander said but he was not complaining by any means. He was happy Daniel was the way he was despite all he had been through. He was a friendly face to greet new centaurs to the sanctuary. He was one of the few centaurs that was overly friendly to them, going out of their way to talk to them out of wanting and less of a mutual understanding.

Alexander sighed to himself, remembering the financial reports and paperwork he was looking at earlier. “You can read me like a book..” He said with a small smile as he sat down at the desk in his office. “Olympus…is in a bad state financially. The money I can bring in for the sanctuary is barely covering the costs to run it. You know I am not in this for the money but if the costs continue to go up, Olympus could be in a bad place…It…really is worrying me” Alexander looked up to Xander as he ran his hands through his hair. “Don’t tell the other employees about this…I do not want them to worry. I know somehow things will work out and I am not going to give up or stop saving centaurs…but it is a concerning thought” He looked over all the paperwork for costs and all the centaurs he was still trying to save.

"With your stature and muscles I can see you living in the mountains or near them." Daniel admitted feeling like he'd do pretty well in a mountain setting. He was strong and would be able to move large rocks that may pose a problem to other species, and he seemed to be quite sure footed, something he noticed from walking along with Alfred in the forest now. His own steps were light and quick, he was adept at navigating through the dense trees and brush of the forests and was able to move around quite easily. His smaller stature helped with that, as well as being built for speed versus strength helping him flee through the trees without running into any of them.

His ears perked up when he was asked why, then asked about his size and pattern being factors as to why the other's didn't like him. "My size... my lack of strength, my pattern doesn't help... the antlers..." Daniel sighed as he listed off things that made him quite different than all the others. "It's okay though." He added shrugging it off not about to let it get to him. If he did he'd always be miserable and would probably cling to Alexander who seemed to be one of the few people -human or otherwise- who actually liked him and treated him kindly all the time. Xander did too, as did a few of the other workers but he really liked the owner of the sanctuary. It showed how big his heart was to do something like this for them, when no one else had or probably would.

Knowing that Alfred was happy to stick with him though certainly put a bounce in his steps as he continued to show him around, showing him the stream that went through the woods and indicating the large water hole that was in the open part of the area which was the only place they all seemed to gather. Weather it was to swim or for any other reason it was a nice place to be. He still hung out there alone though, away from the others. Daniel wasn't someone to push his presence on others, if they didn't want him around he wouldn't force them to be in his presence.

"He's a good one. Centaurs like him could make a different in how the rest of the world sees them." Xander admitted feeling like the little centaur was a good ambassador for the species. Even if he was not like the ones being hunted down and captured or killed he was still one of them. His friendly and trusting nature could make a real difference in how the world was to see them. If only there was a way they could see if other centaurs, wild centaurs were capable of such friendliness as well. From the ones they have seen and had been able to release they were not. But those ones had also been through a lot and their behavior was understandable. "Any news on conservation efforts for those still wild? I feel like their numbers continue to drop." Xander asked pulling himself from his thoughts of Daniel and how the other could really help this whole thing.

"I always have been able to read you." Xander mused with a small smile sitting in a chair on the other side of the desk and watching Alexander who was looking over some papers on the desk. Hearing the financial struggle the sanctuary was going through made him sigh and he could sympathize with him, this was something he had basically put all his money into and it was struggling to stay afloat. There were so many people against them that for a moment Xander wondered if it was a lost cause. But Alexander was quick to say he would not stop saving centaurs or give up, and that was the type of spirit they needed in their leader. "I'm glad to hear you say that, you're a determined person, Alexander. That determination will make all the difference, we'll pull through this and become successful. We could... maybe try to find sponsors? Surely there are other people out there who think that we are doing a good thing and could help." Xander suggested not knowing if that was actually an option but hoping it might be.

Alfred was not able to move through the forest with such ease, the farm now having such dense woods in its borders. Sometimes he had to drag trees in his cart to the main house for wood chopping, but he never had to navigate woods or a forest like this. Alfred kept hitting his flank against the trees, frustrated at the abnormal terrain he was not used to. He would need to get used to the woodsy area of this part of the sanctuary to navigate it with relative ease. It would probably be easier if he was even remotely used to it but he was not.

“I suppose that would make you different…Any centaurs I saw looked more like me. From their pattern to their build, disregarding a variety of colors and coats” Alfred said with a small nod of his head. “But I think its unique, nothing like I have ever seen before. I mean…I guess I haven’t seen many so I guess I am not one to talk” Alfred said with a small laugh. “The humans seem okay enough…Are they good people?” he asked Daniel, figuring he would be honest with him if they were not kind people.

Alfred looked over the water, not remembering he saw an open body of water like this that was not a puddle from the rain. “How deep is it...?” Alfred asked, hesitantly walking toward the large watering hole. He took a hesitant step in, stepping along its edges with tiny splashes. Hmm…water feels nice enough…Alfred thought to himself as he got a feel for the water.

“You are right, the unofficial ambassador of Olympus and all centaurs everywhere. If more people saw centaurs like him, they might treat them less cruelly. They might work to conserve the wild population and treat centaurs with the respect and care they deserve” Alexander said with a small nod of his head. He wished all were as open as Daniel, but most centaurs had lived a life of servitude or forced into horrible conditions. Would wild ones be capable of being as friendly? “The conservation efforts are difficult and at least not on an upward trend. Poachers keep finding them and bringing them to be auctioned on market. I have been trying to start petitions for protected areas to start where they can’t touch centaurs but it didn’t go anywhere. I also am trying to get activist groups to protect and report and wild sightings to Olympus so the areas can be protected” Alexander spoke, wanting to protect more than just the centaurs at the sanctuary.

“I swear at times you can keep me sane Xander” Alexander spoke with a tiny smile, happy to have Xander her encouraging and helping him. It was nice to have a friend who was invested alongside him in helping him run this place. “Sponsors…? I’ll take what I can get. Maybe they can get their name or organization mounted on a special wall or engraved on the fences or something. I am willing to try anything…Sponsors or some kind of fundraising might be our best bet. I am not going to use any method that would exploit the centaurs” Alexander said determined, wondering what would be the most appealing to sponsors. More people donated money if there was some sort of benefit of any kind…but one thing for sure was that it would not involve exploiting the centaurs like rides or forced touching.

"It's not anything most of the other's have seen before either. Which leads me to think that's one of the reasons they don't like me. No other centaur like me has ever come to the sanctuary... they're all... like you." Daniel said a frown appearing and hating that he seemed to be a one of a kind when it came to the sanctuary. He wanted others like him, centaurs that would like him and want to be around him. Granted, Alfred did say he would stick to just him but he was worried that even he would leave him eventually and join one of the other groups to be around others like himself. "They are really good people. They care about us, treat us with respect and help keep us healthy. I really like them!" Daniel said perking up instantly when they began to discuss those who worked here instead of the centaurs that didn't like him.

Daniel was able to see and sense Alfred's frustration with maneuvering through the trees, so he was happy to be able to bring him back into the open that surrounded the water hole. When he was asked how deep it was he thought about it for a moment, "I honestly don't know. It's depth to me would be different to the other's so I can't really say. I don't... hang out here. My presence doesn't really make the other's happy and they enjoy hanging out here." Daniel admitted with a shy look crossing his face. Though he would come to the water hole occasionally to cool off or splash around he always did it in a spot away from the others so that he bothered them as little as possible with his presence. None of the other centaurs really seemed to like him being around at all, being this different was probably the main reason for that.

*~*~*~*

"Probably. But even other innocent creatures are at the receiving end, while some centaurs are capable of defending themselves they still aren't a match for the forces against them. That's why we stepped in to begin with." Xander said giving Alexander a small encouraging smile. "There is no telling with the kind of siege the wild centaurs are under if any of them would be like Daniel, they're too scared and aggressive in an attempt to save themselves. It's really heartbreaking." Xander had gone on a few expeditions to find and observer centaurs in the wild and he saw their behavior towards people. They reacted with violence out of fear and as a last desperate struggle to protect themselves and their families. It was heartbreaking to see, especially how even their young were learning to fear them. Centaurs were quite possible the most intelligent creatures out there remotely like them and they were killing them off or capturing them and treating them like crap. All for what? It made no sense and he hated to see it, which was why he had joined Alexander in this whole adventure.

"That's going to be a constant struggle, Alexander. No matter what we'll be fighting against poachers even if we get them in protected land, they'll just be more cunning about their approach. I'm just worried they'll bring the fight here, where these centaurs have no means of defending themselves." Xander expressed his concern for the centaurs even in the sanctuary's property lines. It was only a matter of time before poachers went after them knowing there was a large amount here in the care of the sanctuary team. He just hoped that they'd be able to protect them well enough to not raise any alarm to the centaurs and allow them to continue to live their lives the best they could under such conditions.

"I like to think I do good things for you." Xander mused with a soft laugh. It seemed that Alexander like his suggestion of getting sponsors and he listened as he spoke telling him that he was willing to try anything but he was not going to exploit the centaurs to get sponsors. "I would definitely not expect you to exploit them, you aren't that kind of person." Xander stopped and considered a few things. "Now, this isn't so much a sponsor, but it could bring in donations to in a sense. You know how in many places there are those 'sponsor a child' or 'adopt a whatever animal'? What if we did the same for the centaurs? Give people a chance to help by giving a small monthly donation of sorts to 'adopt' a centaur in our care. The donation can go towards food, medical care and housing. It would greatly help relieve a lot of the financial stress and we wouldn't be exploiting the centaurs as these people would have no contact with them. Unless they wanted to come by the sanctuary to see them out on the grounds but it wouldn't be any physical interaction so the centaurs would never be stressed out." This may not go over well, but it was an option all the same and it could make quite the difference. The centaurs would continue to live how they did and be supported in the sanctuary by people who wanted to help but maybe didn't know how. As of right now that was the best thing he could think of, how they would get bigger sponsors who could give bigger financial aide... well that was something the could figure out later.

“I am glad they are humans who treat us kindly..” Alfred said, figuring if Daniel said the humans here were kind, they must be kind. And it seemed most centaurs here were of his build and not of Daniels size from what he said. He took a few steps into the water before turning to look back at Daniel. He didn’t get to hang out here much? He had the freedom to go anywhere in the sanctuary and he didn’t go in the watering hole?

“Well I am new here and I want to spend some time with you in the watering hole? So I guess just hang around my neck if it gets too deep?” Alfred asked, wanting to spend the time with him. He also wanted to see how deep the hole was but did not want to go alone. “Come on, I would not want my first time being alone” He said with a small smile, wondering if he would accept his offer.

*~*~*~*

“It really is heartbreaking…That is why I wanted to create Olympus. I wanted to save the centaurs in servitude and keep the ones in the wild free. But even the ones in the wild have grown to fear humans to an extreme. Even the mountain centaurs are being more careful and they used to be the most isolated group of centaurs out there” Alexander sighed as he looked up at Xander with a smile. “I am just glad you ended up joining me in the end, even if I seemed like a crazy hippie crackpot at first” He said with a small chuckle. Having a friend as his right hand man makes things easier. He would dedicate his life, time and money into this place.

“I know it will be a struggle, but that is why I gotta keep fighting. I am sure there will be a day where we will have to defend the sanctuary and its centaurs. I wonder if we should start considering that as a measure we will need to take. We should start thinking about that now so we can start preparing any measures necessary for defense. We can be prepare ahead of time and not be bombarded should poachers try to come to the sanctuary’ Alexander said as he would need to start research into that topic. He listened to Xander’s idea about the ‘adoption’ idea, thinking it was a good start. Companies did that all of the time, write a small blurb of their former lives with a picture. “That would be a great start, any extra funds are helpful right now. We are just managing right now but the extra funds will be a financial help. We can make needed improvements and upgrades if there are enough donations or just focusing on their care” Alexander smiled happily, getting up from his desk. ‘We will need to start writing up centaurs bios with their intake pictures and printing up the material we need for this” Alexander spoke eagerly. Corporate sponsorships could come later once they establish the monthly donations..

Daniel was watching Alfred from the shore as he took a few more steps in the water before he was turning back to him. He could see the look on his face which made him blush slightly, Alfred clearly not understanding why he didn't come here or go in the watering hole when he technically had the freedom to go anywhere here he wanted. The other centaur was speaking a moment later, telling him that he was new here and wanted to spend time with him in the watering hole. Indicating that if the water got to high for him that he should just hang around his neck. It was an odd concept, that another centaur not only wanting to hang around him but was willing to assist him when the water became to high for him to reach the bottom. It was really nice of him, and it made it so that Daniel was already taking a few hesitant steps into the water.

Without thinking the first thing Daniel did when he got near Alfred was take the other's hand, as though he would need this sort of support to get himself further into the water. Their sized became even clearer marked when he noticed how high the water was to him already when it wasn't very high on the taller centaur. With the reassuring hand in his he didn't mind though and let Alfred lead the way further into it. As the water started to reach the bottom of his stomach he became a bit nervous, the knowledge that Alfred wasn't about to put him in any danger and let him drown the only thing that made it so he was able to continue stepping forward. Though he definitely became more hesitant in his steps and needed more coaxing, deep water wasn't something he was familiar with even when he had been in the wild. They had always crossed rivers and streams in the shallowest part to avoid any danger and they weren't ones to swim through lakes or deeper water.

*~*~*~*

"Indeed. The mountain centaurs were probably the most unaffected by this whole thing until recently, after people began to realize the strength and potential in them they've been under siege. The good thing about them is they've learned to traverse the dangerous mountainsides despite their size and are having an easier time evading capture." Xander said with a sigh feeling his heart twist uncomfortably at the thoughts. He couldn't understand why people could not just leave the wild ones alone, let them live how they were meant to without human persecution and interference. "It's only a matter of time before people try breeding them like cats and dogs... that will begin posing even more of a problem." He admitted feeling sick at the thought. So far, no such thing had happened, a birth here or there from captive centaurs but it was normally from a pregnancy pre capture. The intelligent creatures seeming to know that reproduction in captivity wasn't smart or safe and without being able to simply force it like humans did most of the time it had yet to become a practice. But Xander knew even that was going to change if something couldn't be done. Drawn from his thoughts when Alexander indicated he was glad he had joined him in the end he gave his old friend a small smile. "You did sound crazy at first, and I wasn't sure how things were going to go. But after traversing all over and seeing all the different species of centaur and the dangers they were in I was able to sympathize with you and I had to jump on board." Xander admitted.

When Alexander had first approached him with this idea to make a sanctuary for and start saving the centaurs Xander had not been immediately on board thinking his friend was crazy and wasting his time and money. What had changed that was when he had the opportunity to join conservation efforts as well as scientists in an attempt to know more about the wild populations and get a better feel of their drastically declining numbers. Seeing the family groups and the fear they had of them had driven it all home. It had been clear to him that families had been ripped apart and nomadic tribes constantly under siege from people. It had been heartbreaking and he had been quick to jump on board after, giving what help he could to Alexander and the sanctuary.

"That would probably be a good idea. Start reinforcing our perimeters, add more signs saying it's private property and no trespassing. It won't keep the determined out but it may sway some, if we can make it even a little more difficult for them to get to the centaurs. Unfortunately... this may also mean we'll need some of the staff to repeatedly check the perimeter throughout the day, and even at night. While the centaurs may be safer inside at night, it doesn't mean that poachers still won't try things." Xander said with a sigh. Especially when they had the more wild centaurs here just getting medical care until they are good enough to be released. Those centaurs were never brought inside as they were to aggressive and fiesty, they would be at the most risk for the poachers and it would be just as heartbreaking to lose them as it would be to lose one of the permanent residents.

"I'll get started on that then." Xander offered with a smile, he'd get started on making bios with the entry pictures of the centaurs to start the 'adoption' and get monthly donations coming in. The extra money would be vital to helping keep the sanctuary's head above water. But another thought occurred to him and he glanced towards Alexander, this coming now from an earlier comment he had made. "Alexander... we've had this sanctuary in full swing for a few years now... but do you think the possibility of the sanctuary having babies born his higher than it ever has been?" He was a little concerned that the centaurs who would continue to live the rest of their lives in the sanctuary would end up reproducing. There was no way for them to stop them from doing so especially if they felt comfortable enough to start a family, and it would be wrong of them to assume it would not happen even if it may be an uncommon occurrence.

Alfred held the others hands carefully, looking back to keep an eye on Daniel. He wanted to make sure he didn’t accidentally put him in danger or drown. He was not about to let harm intentionally come to his new friends way. The water felt comfortable as he went a bit deeper, the water up to Daniel’s stomach. It seemed to scare the other as he stopped for a moment. “It’s okay…I got you” Alfred said quietly, holding tightly onto his hands.

“Hold onto my neck if you need to” Alfred said, turning himself around so he was facing Daniel. “I won’t go deeper holding you” Daniel said as he stopped where the water reached his own stomach. “Doing okay?” Alfred asked, hoping he was not scaring his friend by taking him this deep in the water. He was the first centaur he really got to talk to in a long time, he didn’t want him to be afraid of him.

*~*~*~*

“You are right in that soon people will want to breed their captive centaurs like dog show animals, using human forced methods for the sole sake of getting children for personal benefit” Alexander sighed. At the rate the world was going, forced centaur breeding would start becoming a thing. Bidding for children and wanting the best genetics in their future workers will force breeding further. “I am glad you joined me after tagging along on all those expeditions. Having help I was able to gather information faster and help more centaurs. You helped Olympus, an integral part I think, in helping me shape Olympus to where it is today” Alexander smiled, leaning over and giving Xander a small hug.

“You are certainly right about all those points. Signs Is a good start until we can think of heavier measures that would keep potential poachers out. And you are right about need staff to patrol the perimeters…It could also deter poachers if the borders are checked daily” Alexander tried to see the positives of needing workers to patrol. He could add that onto their daily task of the day, although he might add extra pay onto overnight patrol duties if there is a lack of workers at night.

Alexander looked up to Xander when he mentioned the possibility of children being born on the sanctuary. “You are right on that matter…With more centaurs being permanent residents it will be a future possibility” Alexander nodded in agreement. Centaur babies would definitely be vulnerable to poachers and he wanted to make sure they would be cared for as long time residents. “We should put that as a future project in the works. More places for baby centaurs to grow and be protected on the grounds. That along with expansion projects…I am sure the centaurs would like more space and we will need to accommodate more centaurs in the future. Don’t want them too clustered together” Alexander said as he added it on a board of ‘Things to do’.

Daniel definitely wasn't all that comfortable as the water came up to his stomach, something that translated into hesitation to go any further. His eyes moving up to lock with Alfred when he was told that the other got him in such a quiet manner his hands being held tightly in an encouraging manner. It was definitely something he appreciated, and it made him a little more willing to go a little further not wanting Alfred to be stuck here when he knew the other wanted to see how deep the watering hole got.

He was told to hold onto his neck if he needed, Alfred turning to face him so that he was now standing where the water was at stomach height to him. Instantly he reached up to wrap his arms around the other's neck causing him to press himself closer to Alfred but he didn't mind, nor care about how close they currently were. When he was asked if he was doing okay he nodded, "Yeah... I'm okay." He was definitely nervous but being like this definitely helped ease that. He looked down at the water before his eyes moved up to the centaur. He had to raise himself up on his hind legs a little to be able to wrap his arms around the other's neck fully. This was a situation he had not been in before, but he found he kind of liked being close to the other centaur like this. For a moment he was about to apologize for being so close and clingy, but Alfred had offered so he assumed the other didn't mind.

*~*~*~*

"It will unfortunately make strained relationships with the centaurs even worse." Xander sighed when Alexander mentioned how children from the forced breedings would be used for personal benefits. Most probably sold for a high price if good 'breeding' took place despite how stressful it was on the parents to be forced into it to begin with. Xander returned the small hug before relaxing back against the chair he was seated in. "It was for the best, and I'm really glad I could help you out. Those expeditions taught me a lot and I was able to gain a better understand of how things really were out there. It's going to do great things for us as we continue to build the sanctuary and maybe some day you'll be able to join me on an expedition or two." Xander mused really liking the idea of Alexander possibly being able to step away long enough to go on at least one expedition with him.

"If not deter them permanently at least partially." He sighed. There was no saying whether it would deter poachers completely, but it was at the very least a start and that was the most important thing right now. "We can discuss what these patrols would include during the next employee meeting. Make sure everyone is aware that it's not just the poachers themselves but signs of people having been in the area or the fence being messed with. Anything that could suggest someone who shouldn't be within the sanctuary property was trying to get onto it or testing the waters." He said feeling it was important that they cover such things.

Xander nodded in agreement, "We will have to be prepared in the event any births happen. But hopefully that is still a ways off." He mused not really sure they were ready for any such thing. He didn't particularly notice any centaurs becoming that close, but he wasn't really sure either. There was still a lot about them that they didn't understand and that they could learn. "Definitely, the baby's will be the most vulnerable and will definitely need more care and protection. But it could also be a great start in the conservation if the centaurs here begin to reproduce. There may be a chance that we could do some future attempts to release future generations and improve the wild population. Years down the road of course when there are hopefully more laws and groups out there protecting them."

Alfred held the others hips where his human half met his centaur half, wanting to make sure he had plenty of support. With them being in water, it made it quite easy to hold up the other in the water. Alfred moved carefully around the water, letting the others legs sway in the water. Alfred kept his eyes on Daniel the entire time, wanting to make sure he took him back to the shore the second he looked too uncomfortable.

“Hopefully I didn’t make you feel like I forced you in here. You seemed really nice and I didn’t want to go exploring this place alone” Alfred said with a smile as he kept going through the water. He decided he was having enough of the watering hole for now, starting to guide Daniel back to the shore of the watering hole. “That was fun!” Alfred smiled wide, finding the watering hole enjoyable. When was the last time he went swimming like that?! It was so much fun!

*~*~*~*

“We need to do what we can in regard to all those problems” Alexander said with a nod in referring to forced breeding and potential poachers. “And I would love to go on an expedition with you sometime once things are stable and secure enough here. I would rather it be a closer one, I am sure there will come a time when that will be possible. Expeditions are fun in their own way” Alexander said with a small chuckle, excited at the potential for more expeditions in the future. It had been some time since he had been able to go on one with Xander.

“That would be a good time to bring that up. It is an important thing to do regardless of worries of poachers and boarder safety” Alexander nodded, adding that to the to do list. “I am sure births are a distant worry for now, lower on the totem pole. Border defenses is the first along with border patrol. The monthly donations is second and expansions is third priority” Alexander adjusted a board he kept of issues in priority order next to his to do list. More focus would go to issues higher up on the list first.

“I would say that is a good place to take a break. Want to go grab lunch after all the centaurs get their meal?” Alexander smiled over at Xander. “I could use the break and I figured you probably haven’t eaten anything yet am I wrong?” He smirked at him.

Daniel was oddly happy with the feeling of Alfred's hands on his waist, not used to the touch but finding that he liked it all the same even if it was innocent. The other was moving carefully around in the water bringing him along with him, but because of the hold on his waist and his arms wrapped around Alfred he felt oddly calm. Occasionally he had a moment of fear but was always able to relax again with the other's presence and constant grip on him. "I don't feel like you forced me." Daniel said shaking his head and giving Alfred a small smile. He liked the other centaur, especially since it was the first time any centaur had taken an interest in him, and he wanted to do things with him. Even if he wasn't used to deeper water and it had freaked him out at first the stronger man had been there to offer support he had needed and make him feel a thousand times better.

He was soon being lead back to the shore and once the water was down around his ankles again he released the grip he had on Alfred allowing his front legs to once more touch the ground though he stuck close to him. "It was kind of fun." He mused thinking that maybe he'd want to do it again sometime. Especially if Alfred was there, he could possibly get used doing this with him. "We could... do it again sometime." He offered wanting to make some effort as well. Glancing around he noticed how open the area was around them and a small smirk appeared on his face as he looked up at the other. "Wanna race? It's been awhile since I've gotten to run out in the open and I'm sure you could learn to enjoy the freedom of it as well." Daniel offered with a large happy smile on his face already getting excited at the idea.

"Glad to hear that. We could both really use the time away and it is really beneficial to both of us and the sanctuary." Xander said with a smile. He was happy to hear that Alexander would like to go on an expedition with him again, it had been awhile and it was a great way for them to keep up on what things were like for the wild centaurs. "They really are fun and exciting, there is so much that can be learned and gathered from an expedition not to mention being outside in the fresh air. Not that we don't do that enough as it is already." Xander said with a soft laugh.

"Understandable." He admitted with a nod of agreement. Knowing that Alexander was right as he was listing things off by how important they were and the order they would worry about them. Births didn't seem to be anything that they had to worry about, he certainly hadn't seen any of the centaurs pregnant and that's not really something that can go unnoticed if a baby was due soon. Especially since they had such a major part in their lives here, surely one of them would have noticed sooner. He was drawn from his thoughts when Alexander said that it would be a good time to take a break and asked if he wanted to get some lunch after all the centaurs got their meal. "That would be nice." He answered with a small smile though he got a shy look and ended up blushing when Alexander brought attention to the fact that he probably hadn't eaten anything. "Of course I have!" Xander lied knowing that Alexander wouldn't fall for it, especially since it wasn't like it was anything new.

Alfred kept the other held close as he made his way back to the shore with the other. “I am glad you came in with me...that was really fun! I do not even remember the last time I was able to go swimming like that!” He said with a big smile on his face. He knew the other was different from his antlers and pattern, one he had not seen before, but he was a nice guy. He did not see how the others could not want to hang out with someone like him even if he was a bit smaller. “A race…? Sounds fun. Where are we racing to? And I don’t think I have ever raced anyone like this before” He said as he prepared himself to run. It would be nice to run around this large open area carefree…free…

“It might be due time for another one once we establish what to do abut the borders. Check on the wild populations and make sure poachers or anyone has not come down on their territory too deep” Alexander smiled, making a note to start planning an expedition for some point soon. “I like a good expedition, even if we get plenty of fresh air. It will be different fresh air” He teased with a small chuckle.

“Oh really? Now who can read who like an open book right now?” Alexander said with a knowing smirk. “You cannot lie to me when it comes to you having eaten or not” He said with a quiet laugh, patting his back. “It will be meal time for them soon. We can go to that one caf? you like that’s close…They make a good sandwich and they donate to centaur conservation. Good people, aren’t they?” He asked with a smile. He almost always went there for lunch and they always had a friendly chat when it was not busy.

"Hmm..." Daniel thought glancing around them to see if he could find a good marker for their race. "Oh! I know! How about that big rock over there?" He said pointing to a large rock in the distance, he remembered trying to climb it once, didn't get very far but it was a great marker for their race. Daniel was already excited and eager bouncing around as he was more than capable of a good race, moreso in the forest part of the sanctuary but out in the open he'd still be quite fast. "It'll be fun, a nice way to stretch the legs!" He happily added in response to Alfred telling him he had never raced anyone like this before.

After he had gotten the confirmation from Alfred that the big rock would work he did his best to line himself up right next to the other centaur. Alfred was larger than him though so it wasn't all that easy, but he managed to do so and let him know that they would go when he reached one counting down from three. Counting down he darted forward the moment he said one a large smile on his face and a feeling quite happy with how fast he was able to run in the open space. It really was freeing, and he absolutely loved it.

"That would be a good idea, not to mention a bunch of fun." Xander said giving Alexander a small smile. An expedition would be fun, but it was also great for them to see how the wild populations were doing, both in their backyard and a far. Which was why he had gone on so many before starting his work at the Sanctuary full time. It had given him great experience and it had been an eye opening experience. Laughing at the comment of it being different fresh air, "I suppose in a sense you're right."

"I don't know what you're talking about." Xander continued to try to deny despite knowing Alexander was far smarter than that and wasn't falling for any of this. "It is a really nice cafe, not to mention not loud or anything." He admitted with a nod agreeing that it would be a good place for them to go for lunch. Xander really did love the place and they were in a way doing the same thing they were doing as well just in a different but no less important way. "They are good people, I really like seeing them and their food is great. Which is one of the many reasons why I love going there for lunch." He added with a laugh.

Alfred heard him mention a big rock, following the direction that he was pointing. “I guess it’s a good way to stretch out the legs, even if I might lose to you. You seem smaller and more agile to dart forward quickly. Regardless it does seem like fun” Alfred said with a big smile. “On your mark then...” Alfred said as he looked ahead at the rock that was his check point. He prepared himself to run forward, preparing his legs.

He rushed forward when Daniel had counted down to one. He felt the breeze going through his hair and tail as he was running toward the rock. He…felt so…free. Alfred smiled happily as he ran forward a bit faster than he was a moment ago. He did not care about the race right now, enjoying this feeling of freedom. He…never got to run like this on the farm. Happiness filled Alfred’s heart as a smile was spreading across his face.

“Xander…you need to eat. Do not make me shove food down your throat now” Alexander teased with a laugh. “I love that place for also having options not completely covered in grease. I like to eat healthy most of the time you know that. Of course the occasional indulge but it can upset my stomach if I eat far too much in one meal” He smiled as he went to get his coat back on. “Introduce Alfred to the meal system here and his options. Make sure he is eating okay and we will go out to lunch. If we arrive back a bit later, we might as well get his exam out of the way” Alexander thought out loud as he looked at his papers. What were they getting fed today…? He better throw some extra fruit in there for the moisture and vitamins.

"I might be smaller and more agile but your strides will cover more distance." Daniel said with a bright smile happy to have someone wanting to spend time with him finally. But he was being honest at the same time, it would take at least two of his own strides to account for one of the larger centaur's so there was still a good chance that Alfred could win despite him being more agile. As they were running he laughed happily enjoying the run more than the race itself, the race was just a whole other aspect to the whole thing. They were nearing the rock though and it made him glance towards Alfred who too seemed to be enjoying the run and freedom to do so which made him all the happier.

When he reached the rock he came to a stop not having reached it all that sooner than Alfred who had been right behind him, even in front of him at one point. It had been a close race but more than anything it had been fun! Suddenly his ears twitched when he heard the sound of chimes spreading throughout the sanctuary grounds, they were the sounds signaling it was time to eat and was far better than the louder bells that would have been used in most other places. "Lunch time!" Daniel said happily taking Alfred's hand and leading him off towards where they would be able to eat. Wanting to show him the ropes completely and make sure he knew how things worked, there were always good choices for every meal.

*~*~*~*

"Like you could." Xander teased right back but he knew Alexander was serious as well, skipping meals was something he did frequently and something Alexander always got on him for. Sometimes he was just too busy and forgot, other times he purposely skipped the meals not being hungry or just not feeling like eating. This morning had been one of the latter reasons, not feeling hungry so he had come to work without eating breakfast. "I know, Alexander. It's a great cafe and the food is always good, you don't need to convince me." He mused as he was slipping his own coat on and following Alexander as he was mentioning introducing Alfred to the meal system here and his options. "I'm sure Daniel will have already handled it, but we can check in on the pair and make sure things are going smoothly." Xander commented as they were leaving the office.

"We'll get the exam done when we get back depending on when we get back." Xander wasn't too worried about it, knowing that Alfred was in good hands and that they had plenty of time to get the exam done. It would be separating the two for the exam to be conducted that may be difficult depending on how comfortable with Daniel Alfred had gotten. At the same time if they were close when they got back Daniel might be able to help make the exam easier for them, since the smaller centaur was definitely well behaved and easy to exam knowing how things worked here pretty well. Daniel had been one of the first centaurs the sanctuary had rescued, and his time here showed with how comfortable and friendly he was with all of them. He remembered how he had been scared and nervous in the beginning but had still warmed up to them quicker than most. Shaking his head he pushed the thoughts aside and lead the way towards where the centaurs would be gathering to eat.
