Dark space [Dark Space #1] by Lisa Henry

Brady Garrett needs to go home. He’s a conscripted recruit on Defender Three, one of a network of stations designed to protect the Earth from alien attack. He's also angry, homesick, and afraid. If he doesn’t get home he’ll lose his family, but there’s no way back except in a body bag.

Cameron Rushton needs a heartbeat. Four years ago Cam was taken by the Faceless — the alien race that almost destroyed Earth. Now he’s back, and when the doctors make a mess of getting him out of stasis, Brady becomes his temporary human pacemaker. Except they’re sharing more than a heartbeat: they’re sharing thoughts, memories, and some very vivid dreams.

Not that Brady’s got time to worry about his growing attraction to another guy, especially the one guy in the universe who can read his mind. It doesn’t mean anything. It’s just biochemistry and electrical impulses. It doesn’t change the truth: Brady’s alone in the universe.

Now the Faceless are coming and there’s nothing anyone can do. You can’t stop your nightmares. Cam says everyone will live, but Cam’s probably a traitor and a liar like the military thinks. But that’s okay. Guys like Brady don’t expect happy endings.

Tbh I rarely read MM novels in sci-fi/alien/outer-space genre (ya/LGBTQ+ excluded) . . . but that line above? Intriguing. I'll try, then! :D

, I'm currently at 51% of the book, trying to keep on reading, but aaaakkh strugling here because--

why no mention of "Trigger Warning: (past) rape scene"?! I mean, there's the usual warning page about BDSM and the like by the publisher (which usually I ignore because most of the books I read from "LooseId" not really had BDSM element), but why no this TW??? By the alien general who had found out that one of the MC (who had been taken by the Faceless at that time) was gay and liked to be uhhhh in the receiving end of the coupling act, so in order to "connect" and communicate across language barrier and more, the alien did it (and heavily non-con) but didn't think it was rape (ACCORDING to that MC)??? And at first that MC also thought it was but then allowed the alien to keep doing it because that MC came to like the coupling act??? But it was in the past (or was it still now?) and both MCs who "sharing thoughts, memories, and some very vivid dreams" now in lust with each other (and soon would be "in-love", uh, of course) and more steamy scenes and I just-- okay, I should've known it would be insta-lust/love for their romance, but I thought-- I thought it wouldn't be the case here since the other book (by different author and it's YA) I read which also have this kind of "bond" between MCs was slow burn so I thought-- I thought this book would be the same -- I thought wrong orz

So, how about you, Jochie? Currently reading or have read it?

I'm 34% right now. It's a struggle,

it's like reading porn, there is no real romance here, it just about cock and I'm not into it

Well I guess you can call it insta lust, but what is it with Cam? He seem to have a boyfriend (Chris) that he have a wet dream every night, but he like it when the alien rape him and now he also into Brady just because he's there

So if you saying its not getting better then I have to drop it. I've tried but this is just not for me

, I've halfway read it a week ago and just stuck . . . and I needed to read a YA/LGBTQ+ book to have some fluff & pure, innocent feeling between boys which could fresh my mind after this book . . .

Also I don't know anymore what was it with Cam . . .

Chris had been dead, right? When the Faceless destroyed their plane and took Cam? Also I think with the alien general no love/feeling invoved, just-- yeah, sex or whatever, but with Brady . . . ah, but he was the other MC so absolutely there would be genuine love, but ehhhh I think I also dislike it when it started with sex because of closed proximity -_-

Other members who has read it seem to like the book, so how about we ask their opinion, Jochie? Let's tag:

So, I looked at my goodreads profile and saw it was actually 1,5 years ago I read this. I remember it was exciting at first, but my review has other opinions as well :) Here is my review:

It was really good in the first half, promising characters, the idea of sharing thoughts and feels, imminent alien threat, Brady's background all real and shit and on the top of that, real nice writing.. Even though the repetitive words (I really don't like them!).

So, the rest half of the book was mostly in the bedroom, with no whatsover explanation on Cam's story which was one of the things I anticipated most. Cam was almost too perfect, except he shouldn't be considering all the things he went through, and I wish the author gave him much more space by cutting some of Brady's sometimes too selfish whinings. The scenes with Kai-ren felt too artifical as well.

Anyway, this means I guess I won't be reading the sequel and but I am so willing to read another Lisa Henry book.

Hi

Sorry for catching up so late... ><.>

You are totally right, the first book doesn't have a very interesting start or ending to be honest. I really do prefer the second book better. Chris is an ex-boyfriend and officer that appears in the second book. (So he is alive ;P).

This book,I think, really focuses on vices of us humans and shows us even when we are facing an unimaginable adversity, even then, we are trying to abuse, mistreat and take advantage of others. And that we are also capable of showing love and kindness as in case for Brady's love for her sister and the doctors fatherly care for the abused soldiers, they show humans can do better if they really just take the time to think. And it's this contrasts in humans that attracts the faceless' attention as they return in 2nd book. Opps... sorry not ganna spoil it any more.

I hope it helps and don't force yourself to read it but if you've read the first half i suggest you read the rest as well because once you put it down you won't pick it up again.... XD XD

I think I can't finish this book . . . I really like Lisa Henry's story telling when her books are something cute, sweet and little-to-no-angst, especially like "Adulting 101" . . . But when they are something heavy or dark/twisted or more steamy scenes than plot, aaaah, I give up! >

This book, I felt disappointed when the sex happened (sooner than I expected) because of the forced/closed proximity. It irked me alongside the no TW in the book. And then yaoiwolf0-0 said about Chris in book 2 and now I'm more confused with Cam & start disliking him.

Brady was fine, imo. Some of his pov made me smile because he was honest and such a brat. I liked him the most in this book.

But I still can't continue reading. According to shinyaKogami "the rest half of the book was mostly in the bedroom" and that is a NO NO to me.

Thank you so much

My favorite character was Brady with all his struggles and growth, I loved his little sister Lucy and would have liked seen more of her in Brady’s memories. I felt for Cameron but in my opinion, he was way too understanding of what the faceless had done to "communicate". I wish there had been more Kai-Ren and exploration of their culture and way of life in the first book, I disliked Chris from the get go. The book picked up speed in the last stretch but it was mainly achieved trough violence so I didn’t liked that.

I hope you have a great week!

Hello everyone! I read this the day it was posted, but I was disappointed so I wanted to postpone my scribbling. I totally spaced out, sorry :(

I can see most of you have the same experience as me, with the difference that I actually love sci-fi and my God this just didn't deliver it.

Worlds are poorly developed, I can't actually see them in my head at all, can't picture it. And the alien race… I mean she could've tried a little harder to describe at least attack, invasion or whatever it was and the devastation left behind, cuz we literally have just pointers. It was quite frustrating.

And the characters, nothing… I didn't connect with them, their relationship could have been different and exciting considering their connection, and she turned it into bunch of wet dreams, violation dreams and snippets of real life…

Just…No.

I actually tried to read second book cuz someone said it was better but I just couldn't, and the fact is I read some…not so good books, and I always fnish, this is maybe the second or third book I couldn't, and that's saying something I think.

Well, I don't think I ever wrote review this bad, I don't really like to do that, but this is only for our eyes sooo… Yeah, I didn't like it. At all…

But please don't shy away from sci-fi, I would really love to read some good mm sci-fi…
