Coutry:Thailand (2004)

Themes: Drama, self-struggle, gender re-assignment, transexual, coming of age

Plot:

Nong Thoom is alittle boy that wants to be a girl. He enjoys picking flowers, wearing make-up, doing traditional female dances and coooking. Thooms parents realize that he is different and so does he. On his first trip to a carnival he sees three things. One is a little girl his age, the other is a contest for the most beautiful woman/dancer and the third is a kickboxing match. As he grows he gets bullied and becomes more effeminate. His mother tells him that he must protect himself. At first his parents send him to become a monk. During this time his mother is arrested and his father almost becomes cripple. Thoom sneaks out of the monestry to work so he can provide for his family. He meets a transexual that helps him get work and get his mother out of prison. He later gets caught for working - then sent with the travelling monk. As the story progresses Thoom becomes a teen (he is no longer a monk), he wins a kickboxing match by fluke.

This is where the real story begins- his training a subsequent fame and stuggles. He becomes known as the boxer that wears make-up. All the while he suffers from his feeling of wanting to be a woman he keeps working to get money for the surgery.

Review:

This movie is incredible on so many levels- it has so much depth and reality. Thooms visions of a little girl continue through the movie as he and she grow up you realise she is him. Who he is on the inside. At one point he realizes that he is loosing himself. This is defenitely the kind of movie you can re-watch- its hard to find with good subtitles.

I really really liked the first half of this movie. The second half was likeable but a bit slow and also predicatable. Nana had got most of the points I had to make.
