Summary:

Kaoru Yukishiro is a 17-year-old (turning 18) onnagata in training, owner of exquisite beauty.

Born in a geisha house, he was eventually thrown out of the okiya and taken in by a troupe of kabuki actors who started providing for him and give him a new life as an actor.

Though he doesn't have much experience as an actor yet, Kaoru already has some fans among the audience due to his looks, including some eventually unwanted attentions.

Shigeru Seiryu, heir of the Seiryu group, had always gotten what he wanted if he worked enough for it. Since he was a child, he has been receiving training to become an eligible heir. He has always lived as a good child that would be approved and accepted by the adults he found himself associating with. He had to be adult-like at an early age.

One day, whilst Shigeru was taking a break as he walks on the streets, he saw a very beautiful actor. For the first time, he felt that he would break his rules just to be with him. Ever since then, he had been watching him. Shin showed up less too. Before he knew it, he fell in love.

Background: Born into a geisha house in Pontocho, Kyoto, he had a very conservative education especially when it came to the arts. When his mother passed away because of a strange disease, the geisha threw him out of the house as he didn’t represent a real investment and they had no more obligations to feed him. After a couple of days wandering in the street he fell asleep over the local Kabuki theater’s stairway and, in the next morning, a troupe of actors found him and took care of him, asking the director to give him a work as a live-in janitor. Eventually they noticed Kaoru could be a promising apprentice and started to train him.

He is not a crossdresser by choice though, he only does it when practicing his plays or performing in the stage. He’s still the opposite of people in general, feeling more comfortable with traditional clothing than in the western clothes he usually wears to go to school or hanging out with his friends.

The theatre’s silk curtain was raised, the shoulder drum started to sound and, splendorous she appears, the Wisteria Maiden.

The lyrics start to tell about the maiden’s charming looks, partially hidden by a black wide hat, while she carries a branch of flowers upon her shoulder. As part of the dance, the Maiden comes closer to the edge of the stage, and though still in character, it was also the actor who portrayed her, Kaoru Yukishiro, who greeted the audience with a stylized bow and a graceful turn of the head.

In his third year of training, Kaoru was only giving his first steps on the way of the onnagata, but one could tell that his gestures were already quite different from most boys his age. Every single one of his steps, every turn of the head, everytime he seemed to play with his furisode’s long sleeves, all of it in him had a symbolic significance, and depending on the character he portrayed, an erotic power.

Occasionally during the performance, he would hear his name being called out as a greeting from the audience, expressing their favour towards him as it was traditional. Kaoru was barely beginning to get accustomed to this kind of attention, and he would almost lose his concentration sometimes, or blush underneath the opaque white makeup. But not now. He was in deep concentration for one of the most difficult part of his dance and did it at his best. Another quick kimono change on stage with the aid of the backstage assistants and in the blink of an eye he was ready for another act. The sleeves would flow in the air and even his cat ears that were timidly peeking out from his black wig would add feeling to the dance. A simple gesture and they would become overwhelmingly burdened with melancholy for a lover that was long gone. The Wisteria Maiden had held her arms outstretched, begging her lover, the Pine tree, not to go away, but it was in vain. She tried to seduce him but there was no response, and she watches her departing friend, lifting the tip of her sleeve to wipe her tears away. Eventually, he seems to come back and the Maiden is overjoyed and dances cheerfully.

The lyrics then say that beneath the purple wisteria blossoms is a nice place for lovemaking, so the maiden beckons her sweetheart, but it’s too late and the gong marks the end of the day, making the sweet Wisteria’s spirit to bid a reluctant farewell to her loved one, for she must return to her true shape as a blossoming tree, just as wild geese return to the fields by twilight.

The curtain finally falls down slowly as the audience cheered enthusiastically, not only the old connoisseurs but also many girls and young women that since Kaoru’s debut had been rushing to the theatres so they could at least catch a glimpse of him. Without knowing, through his youth and charisma Kaoru had managed to bring the ancient arts to the pop culture stage, and there was still a long road to walk on.

By the end of the presentation, he was panting slightly, and he knew that if he stood on the stage for much longer, the sweat on his face would start to break his oil and rice powder mask down.

His seniors who took him in three years ago were in the backstage watching and could hardly feel any more pride. As Kaoru rushed to them after the curtain was down they all patted him in his head and back for a job well done, until Kaoru said he felt tired and he’d like to take his makeup and kimono off and go to bed.

It was only half truth. As he left them, Kaoru was indeed eager to clean himself up, but he wasn’t at all sleepy. The rush of an outstanding performance and the cherish from the audience and his “older brothers” felt so good that as he walked the theatre’s hallways to his makeup room he was thinking about doing some late night practice after the night’s shows ended and everyone went home.

Among the audience, there was a man who seemed out of place in the theatre. There was Shigeru, who was brought to this place by his random whims.

He was walking on the streets as he saw a poster regarding the play that was to start a few moments later on. He was being searched by his subordinates for he has left his job early after being annoyed by a client. It was a rare occurence for him but if he doesn't do this, more trouble might occur.

The moment he went inside, he was thankful that it wasn't bright enough. He could hide well in here and enjoy himself as well.

He sat patiently before the curtain finally raised to expose the star of the show. Shigeru was astounded by the figure before his eyes. Beauty was nothing rare for him but that, along with gracefulness was simply dazzling. He could hear the cheers by the other guests and took note of the name "Kaoru." He felt the desire to know more, which was always natural for him. But this knowing has to be done by observing. He sat in his seat even after the curtains were closed, thinking of his next course of action. He finally stood up but he only stayed in the nearby alley, still hiding from those searching for him.

As every other guest got up to leave the room and others came in for the next play in the series of dances now featuring Kaoru’s seniors, people were still commenting on the boy’s performance.

Some girls who seemed to be senior high school students passed by Shigeru while talking to each other.

- Raised by geisha that’s so romantic... I wish I could meet him!

- He looks so dreamy... and they say he actually is quite cute without the makeup.

- He is! Didn’t you watch the interview he gave on TV last night? Ah I only wanted to pinch his ears!

- No way! He rarely gives public interviews, let alone appearing in public without makeup!

- It makes one wonder how he is in real life...

But Kaoru was also the talk among the older male guests.

- Oh yes, of course he was questioned again about if he is going to dock his tail as it’s traditional. I guess he won’t ever do it. Too late by now.

- I heard this rumour that keeping his tail uncut may be just an expedient the theatre company uses to make him look younger and more attractive. Well, media talk or not, it works.

- It’d be a shame, they say docking is a quite painful procedure anyway.

No matter the talk, the lights eventually went down again as the next show was about to start, while in the meantime, Kaoru was already in his small makeup room. He had taken the wig and the heavy kimono off and changed into a different robe so he could clean his face more freely. He sat down in front of a small dresser, and mixed the necessary ingredients to remove the oil and powder mix, cleaned his hands, and then slid the robe down to reveal his shoulders and part of his back so he could start to work on his face without soiling his cotton robe.

He could hear the music of the new play being played two storeys down and certainly everyone’s eyes and ears would be on the stage again, while something out of normal would hardly be suspected of upstairs.

Shigeru took in every information he was able to overhear, expelling the personal opinions. He relaxed in his spot, finally taking his back off the wall as he took out his phone for more research. But using his phone would notify his men of his location so he dismissed the thought, putting his dead cellphone back to his suit pocket.

When he closed his eyes as he sighed, there was another voice which interfered him. Though it was his voice, it wasn't of his own thoughts. 'Shin is going to take over again?' he thought warily. Inside his mind, his other consciousness replied. It seems that he had heard that thought. 'Don't be so paranoid, fool. I just thought I saw something interesting,' Shin answered. 'What do you mean "interesting"?' Shigeru asked with his thoughts but there was no reply from his split. He's being teased again by Shin.

Realizing that, Shigeru sighed again. But it was better than having him take over and do something again. He looked up to the sky as he thought and noticed the lights lit and seen through the windows. "Is that.." he mumbled to himself.

After cleaning his face completely, Kaoru had changed into another kimono, a blood red one with a waves’ pattern and embroidery representing a branch of a plum tree covered in blossoms.

Like his mother, he also cultivated the habit of exposing his kimonos to incense fumes regularly after cleaning them, which filled them with whatever exquisite scents they chose to mix. Sandal and pine were his choices for that night, and as he opened his closet, the pleasant perfume enveloped the room.

As he had no one there to help him tying his obi sash across his torso and behind his back, he had to opt for a more simple style of knot, tied in the front of his belly, ironically, the one that prostitutes wore since the 1700’s.

He wanted to practice a bit further and though the knot was a shameful choice, it was the only way he could practice properly without having a person to dress him the right way, as it was convenient to practice while wearing the beautiful yet heavy and encasing kimonos.

“No one will see me like this. It’s just for a while.” – he thought as he finished the black and golden sash.

He stuck his head out of the makeup room to see if the coast was clear, and then quickly skulked is way into the wide practice room.

Entering the room, Kaoru turned the lights on and closed the sliding door behind him.

Confident no one would hear him, he took the liberty of picking a cd containing the soundtrack for the play he wanted to work on. As the music started to sound he was ready and started to follow it with his charming steps.

It was a wide tatami room, with big windows to the outside and one of the walls was covered in big mirrors like a ballet studio so the actors could see how they were doing, and though the mirrors’ installation was a concept imported from the west that gave the conservative room an odd look, it worked.

For a while, Kaoru kept practicing alone, until he finished his routine along with the music. He had made some few minor mistakes, so he decided to work on them again, this time without any music so he could concentrate properly. The silence has eventually done its job and Kaoru became completely oblivious towards the rest of the world, absorbed in his footwork and posture.

Shigeru paid no heed to the room after dismissing his thoughts but he suddenly heard a faint sound. After a little while more of listening attentively to the series of sounds, he decided that it was music. He looked up again to the window, seeing a silhouette moving with grace. He was still in his obsessive state after seeing something so beautiful earlier so he assumed that this graceful figure would be the one he saw earlier which caught his attention, Kaoru.

After a while, the music stopped. He felt disappointment but then, the figure was back and was moving again, without music this time.

Suddenly, there was a loud voice calling out to him, "Young master!" "Boss!"

A series of voices called out, making ruckus on the streets. Shigeru tried to quiet them down for they would be a bother to the area so he thought he had no choice but to go with them and go back to work. Smiling, he talked to them apologetically and finally said that he'd go with them so they should stop their complaints. He unconsciously went out to the streets as he explained and it seems that he has no other choice but to follow his words. He went with them, walking back to their office as he pleaded not to bring a car in a place like this. He took one last look at the window before leaving the place.

The following day, Kaoru had to go to school in the morning, but by its end, the weather was so nice he decided to stop for a scoop of ice cream and start his homework in one of tables placed outside of the café. He looked at his wrist watch so he could make sure he still had time before dance practice, took a chair, and opened his note and textbooks while waiting for the waiter to come.

He looked so different in western clothing and without his makeup, he was barely recognizable for the majority of people, which allowed him to walk around in broad day light without being pursued by a horde of female fans. Still, he remained a cute vision, enjoying everyday life.

Shigeru sighed in exhaustion as he finally ended all of his work. He has been working ever since he got back just to get a day off again and to not have to sneak our and have people looking for him just to make a ruckus anywhere. It was only then that he realized he missed school again. He was always given consideration but he didn't want to abuse the privileges given to him. Still, he had done it unconsciously today. Dismissing the train of thoughts, he went out of the mansion to take another walk. He had told his secretary everything beforehand to avoid panic among the company's staff.

He was tired and needed sleep but his coffee overdose wouldn't let him unless he waited for his body to settle down from the rush. Even though he was in an awful state as he was walking around, girls would still take a glance at him and whisper fondly, taking notice of his looks. Ignoring the usual stuff as he walked around, he remembered "Kaoru" whom he saw last night. He felt the desire to know once again and finally, no chains are there to bind him for there is no work left undone. He smiled as he followed the path to the place where he found him last night.

Having done most of his schoolwork, Kaoru took a look at his watch and froze suddenly as he realized he only had 20 minutes to get back to the theater, change and go meet one of his seniors for dance practice in one of the building's rooms.

With the amount of traffic there was in the street, his best bet was running all the way back to the theatre. He shoved his books into his backpack and left just enough money to pay for the half-eaten ice cream parfait.

"If I don't get there in time, Ikeda-senpai will rip off my skin and use it to make a shamisen!" - he thought on the way, worried he wouldn't make it.

Being fleet-footed as a cat helped a lot throughout the way, but as close he got to the theatre, the lower his concentration went. As Shigeru was coming from the opposite direction of the sidewalk just in front of the theatre, Kaoru was going so worried he didn't see him on time and eventually hit him, causing his backpack to fall from his shoulder and scatter some of his belongings over the sidewalk.

Kaoru himself had fallen on his butt and was just trying to recover from the impact rubbing his head softly.

Shigeru had been walking clueless himself and it didn't surprise him that he's crash into someone. He was slightly shaken from his position but his strength enabled him to stand up straight after a few seconds. Seeing the other man in front of him, he knelt to be on level with him while having a worried expression. "My apologies, I wasn't paying attention. Are you alright?" He asked to the other whose face was hidden by his hair.

- No... I mean, I'm fine. - he stuttered more out of nervousness for being late than for shyness, not really minding to look at the stranger's face. He shook his head and started gathering up his belongings, not even making sure if he had everything he dropped.

And in fact he got up and entered ran the few more meters left until he entered the theater without recollecting a small notebook, his personal agenda, where he wrote things that went from his schedule, to the kimonos he'd like to buy or even some diary-resembling passages as if he was writing a letter to his mother who had already passed away.

Shigeru looked at the flustered and hurried man in confusion, letting him do everything in his own pace. Unable to do anything in the speed of the occurrences, Shigeru simple frowned in confusion, only his eyes following the man. He was just about to disregard the happening but then, he noticed a notebook lying on the floor. It was a given that it belonged to the man he just bumped with earlier so in his good will, Shigeru picked it up. Having a strict sense of privacy and respect, he did not glance in the contents even though he felt curious before. And thankfully, he had looked at him as he left so he at least had a small idea where to look for him.

Kaoru was so worked up because of his lesson he barely had time to look at the stranger, let alone check if he had everything he needed with him. Only late at night, when in his tiny bedroom, he realized his notebook was missing now that he finally had a moment for himself to take some notes and write some thoughts.

Shigeru again spent his time watching yet another play, hoping to see "Kaoru" once more but his wish was not fulfilled. Even so, he's starting to appreciate the art itself. Realizing that he had taken a long time holding onto the notebook, he walked towards where the guy he bumped to earlier headed. He knew it was rude to visit in such a late hour but his guts told him it was something important. "Pardon me!" he spoke in an aloud yet polite way.

"It's gone..." - he thought while rummaging his schoolbag - "How come it's gone...?"

He barely heard the knock on the door. Then he thought it could be one of his seniors and asking out "Yes?" he went to open it, but when he saw the stranger from before he grew slightly pale, his ears folded down and he discreetly tried to cover his chest better with his robe's collar.

- Y-you shouldn't be in here... - he stuttered, apparently having nothing better to say because of the surprise.

Shigeru gave a gentle smile before bowing as a greeting. "Sorry for intruding in this late hour," he spoke gently to the other man. Taking another look at the other man, seeing him not as flustered as he was, he's starting to see him as attractive. No, more than just attractive. Nevertheless, he kept his composure. "I think this belongs to you," he said as he took out the notebook that he picked up earlier. He smiled gently as he presented the item.

Kaoru was slightly surprised to see his notebook in the hands of the stranger.

"Oh... that was nice of you. Thanks."

Still holding his robe closed with one hand, he took the small book back as he sighed of relief, but tried not to look too eager, for it wouldn't look polite and the cat wasn't exactly in a solid ground with this person. He was now remembering the handsome stranger and realized he owed him an apology.

"Look, I'm sorry if I sounded harsh to you earlier. I was on a rush." - then he blushed clenching the fist harder around his clothing - "I'm not decent now, but I could buy you lunch or tea as a payment, some other day perhaps."
