Julius leaned forward, mouth parting slightly as Yukie offered the forkful of cake. He took the bite, their fingers brushing for a fleeting second. The taste bloomed across his tongue, deep and rich, not just sweet but spicy, like sun-warmed pods split open by hand. He hummed low in his throat, eyes half-lidded as he savored it. “You’re right,” he said, voice softer now, thoughtful. “It’s the kind of flavor that lingers. Like something to be remembered.” His eyes drifted down to the rest of the plates, each one waiting quietly to be chosen. He felt a strange tenderness welling up in his chest, as though this simple, quiet moment really was what this had been all about. Not the venue, not the ceremony, not the guest list or endless fittings. Just this: Time to really dig into eachother habits and feelings. Like with this morning. It was hard to avoid all the stuff they tried to hid from eachother. Julius reached for the lemon-lavender next, careful not to knock the delicate china as he slid the plate closer. He cut a neat piece and brought it to his lips, the floral tang bright against his palate, almost cleansing. It reminded him of early spring, of pale sun through fog, of mornings when Yukie curled closer instead of rising first. He smiled faintly to himself. That’s the one for the second tier, he thought absently, then looked up and said it aloud. “This one,” he said, “Is really good too. It's bitter yet sweet just enough to even out all the good and bad things” He didn’t mean to sound poetic, but the words came that way anyway. ---------------------------------- He didn’t speak at first, content to simply listing and soaking in Haruhi’s blunt but truthful words while Shan’s excited chatter filled the room like sunlight breaking through clouds. He watched the boy wriggle happily in Haruhi’s embrace, blue shell still clutched in one hand, eyes bright. Shan was still too young to carry the weight of things he barely understood, but old enough now to feel when the people he loved were in pain. Yumro’s gaze drifted back to the hallway. The bathroom door remained shut, a steady silence behind it. Haru’s energy still curled like smoke under the wood he was angry and embarrassed. Yumro didn’t need to press his ear to the door to feel it. He shifted his weight to lie beside Haruhi and Shan, the woven rug rough under his palms. “You know,” he said, more to himself than anyone, “it’s strange. Tides pull in their own time, no matter how much you kick or scream.” He tilted his head toward Shan. “That coral we saw today? It wasn’t always there. Took years to grow, years more for the fish to start living there.” Shan nodded seriously like he understood, even if he only half did. “Like we grow too?” he asked, still cradled in Haruhi’s arms but now looking up at Yumro. Yumro smiled gently. “Exactly. Just because we can't do things in the first few tries, dosen't mean we'll never ne good at it.” Shan considered this. “But Haru dosen't like that.. Can't he learn while not feeling pain?” Yumro’s answer. “Not really. Sometimes that’s part of it. You break through the pain and find something better on the other side. Like how baby sea turtles have to crawl through all that sand just to reach the ocean. Doesn’t mean they’re weak. Just means they’re not there yet.” The boy fell quiet. After a moment, he looked up again with wide, sincere eyes. “I’m gonna support Haru and do my best to ease his pain. Maybe it’ll make him feel better.” Yumro reached out and ruffled his hair, his touch light. “I think he’d like that, Shan.” Shan got up on his feets. "I'm gonna find something to cheer him up" he announced before taken off and ran back outside. With just the two of them Yumro rolled onto his back so he could look back up at Haruhi. "Did you have a nice rest? You look quite comfortable here" he smiled softly at his mate. His hand gently stroked the softly fur of Haruhi's front leg.
